  • Is it possible to filter users from a launchd plist?

    I have some launchd plists that are now placed at the administrator per-user level, particularly inside: - /Library/LaunchAgents OR - /Library/LaunchDaemons I'd like to avoid that some of those services could start only for one user (possibly avoiding to move all the plists to ~/Library/LaunchAgents), which is the simplest way?   • How long is too long for a script to execute?

    What is the max time do you think is acceptable for a web script (PHP for example) to execute before it starts to become an annoyance for the user (on average)? I always thought that if the user has to wait more than 1 second for the page to load (this of course after images and css have been cached..this rule really only applies for subsequent requests) they would start to get annoyed.

    From the perspective of an end user, what makes a software great rather than just good or functional? What are some fundamental principles that can shift the way a software is used and perceived? What are some of the little finishing touches that help put an application over the top? I'm in the later stages of developing a web app and I'm looking for ideas or concepts that I may have missed. If you have specific examples of software or apps that you absolutely love, please share the reasons or features that make it special. Keep in mind that I'm looking for examples that directly affect the end user, but not necessarily just UI suggestions. Here are some of the principles and little touches I'm trying to use: Keep the UI as simple as possible. Remove absolutely everything that isn't necessary. Use progressive disclosure when more information can be needed sometimes but isn't needed all the time. Provide inline help and useful error messages. Verbs on buttons wherever possible. Make anything that's clickable obvious. Fast, responsive UI. Accessibility (this is a work in progress). Reusable UI patterns. Once a user learns a skill, they will be able to use it in multiple places. Intelligent default settings. Auto-focusing forms when filling out the form is the primary action to be taken on the page. Clear metaphors (like tabs) and headings indicating location within the app. Automating repetitive tasks (with the ability to disable the automation). Use standardized or accepted metaphors for icons (like an "x" for delete). Larger text sizes for improved readability. High contrast so that each section is distinct. Making sure that it's obvious on every page what the user is supposed to do by establishing a clear information hierarchy and drawing the eye to the call to action. Most deletions can be undone. Discoverability - Make it easy to learn how to do new tasks. Group similar elements together.

  • Making "helper" text in a form be a different color then typed text.

    <input name="phone" type="text" id="phone" value="Phone #" onfocus="value=''"> I've got two problems here. The main one is I would like the helper text (in this case "Phone Number") to be a different color then the inputted text from the user, to make it easier for the user to differentiate between filled and unfilled fields. The second is that with this methodology (onfocus="value''") if you mistype something in a field and come back to it you have to retype the whole thing which isn't really acceptable.

  • How do I attach event bindings to items on a canvas using Tkinter?

    If I'm using a canvas to display data and I want the user to be able to click on various items on the canvas in order to get more information or interact with it in some way, whats the best way of going about this? Searching online I can find information about how to bind events to tags but that seems to be more indirect then what I want. I don't want to group items with tags, but rather have specific function calls when the user clicks specific items on the canvas.

  • Logs show failed password for invalid user root from <IP Address> port 2924 ssh2

    I'm getting a constant flow of these messages in my logs. The port is variable (seemingly between 1024 and 65535). I can simulate it myself by running sftp root@<my ip> I've commented out the sftp subsystem line in my sshd_config. These ports should be closed by provider's firewall. I don't understand: Why sftp would be selecting a random port like that. It seems to be behaving like FTP in passive mode, but I can't make any sense of why that would be. Why it can even hit my server in the first place if these ports are closed.

    Anyone ever seen this exception? I'm running in hosted mode on GWT 1.6.4 on a mac. I'm using the AutoSuggest and it's throwing this exception trying to show the popup. It works fine in compiled mode, but obviously hosted mode is rather important.   • Zend_Form : Adding fields in sub-forms on user's click

    I'm having a zend form - comprised of a number of zend - sub forms, where the user is creating a new question (its a content management system). In one of the subforms, the user can click on a button to add more textfields, like this: [----------] [----------] [click to add more] which should give [----------] [----------] [----------] [click to add more] I'm trying to set a flag in the sub form in question - or set a count on how many times the button has been clicked, to add that many total fields to the subform - but its simply not working. I tried using a static count variable - but the value doesnt get incremented at all. Any thoughts on how to do this in a Zend-subform within a zend form? I'll definitely update if I hit a solution.     Consider an ASP.NET MVC application that requires a session variable be set. It's used throughout the app. It'll be set by either reading a hashed value on the browser cookie, or after having the user login. In the WebForms + Master Page model, I'd check the Page_Load() of the master page. Perhaps not the ultimate event, but it was an easy one to find. How would you check and enforce the existance of a session variable in ASP.NET MVC? Consider that this question might not involve user login details, but some other piece of data (first visit time, perhaps).

  • How to follow user location with MapKit

    I'm using MapKit to display the user's location relative to pins around them. I'd like to be able to mimic the functionality that Maps provides via the crosshair button in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. I'm already aware that MapKit provides a CLLocation object with the user's location via MKUserLocation, I just wanted to seek advice on how I should keep focus on that location. My initial inclination was to use an NSTimer to center the map on that coordinate every 500ms or so. Is there a better way to do this? Is there something built in to MapKit that I'm missing that will accomplish this? Thanks so much, Brendan

  • Unix [Homework]: Get a list of /home/user/ directories in /etc/passwd

    I'm very new to Unix, and currently taking a class learning the basics of the system and its commands. I'm looking for a single command line to list off all of the user home directories in alphabetical order from the /etc/passwd directory. This applies only to the home directories, and not the contents within them. There should be no duplicate entries. I've tried many permutations of commands such as the following: sort -d | find /etc/passwd /home/* -type -d | uniq | less I've tried using -path, -name, removing -type, using -prune, and changing the search pattern to things like /home/*/$, but haven't gotten good results once. At best I can get a list of my own directory (complete with every directory inside it, which is bad), and the directories of the other students on the server (without the contained directories, which is good). I just can't get it to display the /home/user directories and nothing else for my own account. Many thanks in advance.

    The problem I have a page with a silverlight object. It attempts to retrieve XML from the page. But I am struggling with a security exception. I have this code working brilliantly in WPF. When using a website hosting a silverlight application with the same code, the user agent string of the HttpRequest object is null (and seemingly cannot be set). In fact there is no header information at all - this causes a security exception when attempting to make my asynchronous call. The question Why is the user-agent string (and header information) null in my silverlight 4 application when making an asynchronous call using HttpWebRequest? Thanks in advance!

  • iPhone Mapkit Blue Dot / User Location Region Zoom Question

    Hey All, Is is possible to set a region based on a current location in a mapview only one time. I want my iphone app to get the current location, zoom into that current location, and then allow the user to scroll around. However, because my setRegion code is in my didUpdateToLocation function, every time the current location is updated, so is the region, and I can't scroll around on the map. I tried putting this setRegion code in the viewDidLoad function, but the user's current location isn't initialized at this point, so it doesn't work right. Any ideas?

    Hoping someone can explain what is probably fairly obvious...but confuses me. Imagine two users with admin privileges on our server (Mac OS X Server 10.5). Call them joe & bob. both users are members of these groups: Staff Group ID: 20 Workgroup Group ID: 1025 Shared folder "devfolder" has sharing set as so: POSIX: Owner: joe read & write Group: admin read & write Other no access ACL: Workgroup Allow Read & write Question is why when looking at same folder does the ownership appear to change depending on who's doing the looking?!?   • QTableWidget signal cellChanged(): distinguish between user input and change by routines

    i am using PyQt but my question is a general Qt one: I have a QTableWidget that is set up by the function updateTable. It writes the data from DATASET to the table when it is called. Unfortunately this causes my QTableWidget to emit the signal cellChanged() for every cell. The signal cellChanged() is connected to a function on_tableWidget_cellChanged that reads the contents of the changed cell and writes it back to DATASET. This is necessary to allow the user to change the data manually. So everytime the table is updated, its contents are written back to DATASET. Is there a way to distinguish if the cell was changed by the user or by updateTable? i thought of disconnecting on_tableWidget_cellChanged by updateTable temporarily but that seems to be a little dirty.
