• About HDD enclosure

  hey guys, how r u doin? I have this 3.5" IDE enclosure, and it works great, I mean I love the idea of enclosures ( not the power feeding thing :), btw can't I just insert a chargable battery to feed the power when I am unable to find an electricity block), anyway my question is, when I finish the usage of the enclosure I safely remove it when using Windows or umount when working with Linux, and after that I got confused whether to turn it off or no? when I turn it off, the HDD suddenly stop spinning as if power failure not as when it was an internal and normally shuted down the pc. So is it ok to turn it off the way I've just said??? regards, ~Abed

• Can't VNC into my OSX machine from my Windows machine

  Hi, I'm trying to access my OSX (snow leopard) machine from my Windows 7 machine. Both machines are within my local network I don't need outside access. I'm using Vine Server (OSXvnc) for OSX and TightVNC Viewer for Windows, but TightVNC keeps telling me that the host is unreachable. Any idea what could be wrong? how could I troubleshoot this kind of issue? Appreciate your help.

• Linksys Router/Tomato Firmware DNS issues

  I've got a WRT54GS that I've loaded the current version of Tomato onto. I entered static DHCP addresses in for the devices on my network, released and renewed the address on my desktop and tried to ping another computer. All I got was The request could not find host blah. Please check the name and try again. Now, I verified that my desktop and the target machine I'm trying to ping have both received their proper static DHCP lease and that their DNS server is the IP address of my router. What am I missing?

• Our application is responding different on client server

  I have an application running on our local server and it works perfect. However when I deploy my application to our client's server there are problems. If i copy all the sources to another local from their server, it works fine again.... I am talking about an ASP.NET application talking with windows server 2008. The server specs of our client are: intel Xeon 2.13 GHz 6 GB RAM 300 GB HDD windows server 2008 R2 Although I think it's not that important I will describe the problems I am talking about to give u a better idea: It is related to upating and deleting fields in the sql server. Whenever there is more than one user running the application, and updates or deletes (not even the same record!0, there seems to be fields updating/deleting wrongly. But as I said before, if we copy the source to another server it is not the case. So I assumed it is more configuration related. Do you guys have any idea what the issue could be?   In my PC i am using google public DNS as DNS server.In Internet protocol(TCP/IP) properties i have set Preferred DNS server as 8 8 4 4 and Alternate DNS server as 8 8 8 8. According to me this DNS server should be used to resolve any request to website to its IP by using this DNS servers.(see google DNS and How Domain Name Servers Work). • Picasa “sync to web” folders do not stay in sync

  I have multiple folders from the Picasa software that were moved to my Google+ profile using the "sync to web" feature. At some point I noticed that some of these folders were on Google+ and had the green upload arrow in Picasa, however the "sync to web" option was disabled. I tried to re-enable the "sync to web" option and it starts loading but after a few seconds the "sync to web" option is back to disabled. I get no error message, it just switches back to disable. Is there any way I could leave the option enabled? Out of around 80 something albums synced to Google+ only 3-4 are not able to have the "sync to web" option enabled. Thanks.

• Google Chrome mouse wheel takes keyboard focus

  I recently switched the default browser on all my machines from Firefox to Google Chrome. In general I’m loving Chrome but there is one behaviour that is driving me nuts. Scrolling with the mouse wheel takes keyboard focus away from the document. Here’s what happens. I’ve just opened a page or switched to a new tab and the page has keyboard focus as I can use the keyboard up/down and PgUp/PgDn keys to scroll it; no problem there. But if I then use the wheel on my mouse to scroll the page, it loses the keyboard focus and no longer responds to up/down, PgUp/PgDn, or in fact any other keyboard keys. I have to click on the page background to restore the keyboard focus. This is a minor inconvenience for scrolling but where it really drives me nuts is in Google Reader and Gmail where I use keyboard shortcuts a lot. Here I find that I scroll the article or e-mail I’m reading with the mouse wheel then get no response when I press j/k to move to the next or previous article or e-mail. I am using Windows 7 and the Chrome dev channel (version 4.0.249.43).

  WinSCP 5.2 I wanted to put multiple files with a file extension .pgp on an sftp site. When I tested my original command line (see below) and it only placed the first *.pgp alphabetical file (D:\a.csv.pgp) on the sftp site. I tried specifying *.PGP and *.pgp without any changes - only one file (D:\a.csv.pgp) would be copied each time. I got it to work for all files only if I specified a put command for each .pgp file. Any ideas on how to put all *.pgp on the sftp site? • How to set Virtualbox appliance as webdev portable sollution?

  I just want to set a a Virtualbox virtual appliance to make it portable. Meaning that I'll enable a network config which will not need to be changed when I am using my laptop in a different network. I want the virtual machine to have internet access to keep it updated and be able to always have direct access from host using, for example, the IP 10.0.2.100 even when I am in a 192.168.0.1 network. So the first virtual network adapter will have a static ip (10.0.2.100) and the second will receive it from the DHCP. I don't know if 2 virtual adapters are needed or just one to accomplish that.

• Will increasing RAM improve Lightroom 3 large tiff loading times

  Set up: mid 2009 17" unibody MacBook Pro 4GB RAM 2.66 Core 2 Duo Snow Leopard 10.6.6 Lightroom 3 When working with 12 MegaPixel RAW files from a Nikon D700, no problem. Lightroom is fine. Recently I've been scanning film and they result in large tiff files, about 130mb each. The tiff files themselves are good, and I'm happy with my scanning workflow. Working with these files in Lightroom is perfectly fine, except for one step. When I choose one of these photos in the Develop module, Lightroom displays the "Loading" on the image for about a minute or two, which is quite long. Once the image is loaded, then everything is fine again, and applying effects is instant. So my only issue is reducing that "loading" time in the develop module (the library module is fine too). Will increasing my RAM to 8GB help? I'm worried about spending the money and it not making any difference. thanks andy

• Backup to Synology NAS using rsync or NFS and hardlinks

  I want to backup data from a Windows (Vista) computer to a Synology NAS (210j). The NAS supports FTP, SMB, NFS and also allows a rsync daemon to be set up. I want to backup different folders to the NAS, but I'd prefer to use the hardlink method to save diskspace (like this script does). With this method, a new folder is created for every backup, but if the file already exists on the target, only a hardlink is created. The filesystem on the Synology device is ext3, so I probably can't use rsyncbackup, as it is made for NTFS. Is there another way to do this backup with hardlink support?

  Hi all, I'm running OpenSuse 11.2 and Wine 1.1.28. Even if audio is perfectly working fine for me (Skype, Banshee, etc), when I try to configure audio for Wine (to use Spotify) I cannot hear anything from the audio test. In the winecfg audio tab, ALSA is checked, but no devices are available. I tried to run alsaconf (it needs root permissions) but it returns: No supported PnP or PCI card found No legacy drivers available, either. Any idea?

  What is the best way of doing SCP from one box to the other as a sudo user. There are two servers Server A 10.152.2.10 /home/oracle/export/files.txt User : deploy Server B 10.152.2.11 /home/oracle/import/ User : deploy Sudo user : /usr/local/bin/tester all i want is to copy files from server A to Server B as a sudo user... In order to do this, first i normally login as deploy user on the target server and then switch as a sudo user without password. after that SCP to copy file, this is the normal way i perform this activity... In order to auotmate i have written script #!/bin/sh ssh deploy@lnx120 sudo /usr/local/bin/tester "./tester/deploy.sh" I have generated the private key for deploy user, so it allows me to login as deploy user without password. afterthar the sudo command is executed it will switch the user to tester... after that nothing happens.. i mean the script is not getting executed ... is there any way to accomplish this in a different way...
