  Hi, Recently my iPhone battery started to discharge in just one day. I do not use my iPhone much (less than 1 hour a day). and then while discussing it with couple of colleagues, I heard that there are some apps which even if installed on your iPhone can cause your battery to drain out faster. It does not matter if you are not using those apps, only having them installed was enough to cause battery drain. I have heard this from couple of my techie friends as well and thus had to put some credibility to it. Being an iPhone developer, I don't think that is possible. Do you think if this is possible for an app to cause battery drain just by being installed there on iPhone?

  Based on the explenation here: How do I join two worksheets in Excel as I would in SQL? I tried to join to excel sheets from different files into the same sheet. However, I keep getting this error message when I try to refresh the table: [MICROSOFT][OBDC Excel Driver] Too few parameters. Expected 5. • Can RPM packages be installed into Cygwin?

  I noticed that there is a command - rpm - under Cygwin 1.7. Does that mean RPM packages can be installed into Cygwin? I tried to install ncbi-blast-2.2.26+-3.i686.rpm (see: ftp://ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/blast/executables/blast+/LATEST/ ) into Cygwin 1.7.13 with the command "install -i ncbi-blast-2.2.26+-3.i686.rpm". However, error message appeared as below. I tried to search for the missing libs using the setup.exe of Cygwin. It seems that some of them were not present, such as libc.so.6, libdl.so.2, libm.so.6, libnsl.so.1, and libz.so.1. Where can I get these libs? For example: Cookies - %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies History - %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\History Cache - %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files However, for some reason, Internet Explorer occasionally stops using the normal locations and instead creates new folders under %TEMP% and/or %TEMP%\Low for this data. • /etc/environment not being read into PATH variable

  In Ubuntu the path variable is stored in /etc/environment. This is mine (I've made no changes to it, this is the system default): $ cat /etc/environment PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games" but when I examine my PATH variable: $ echo $PATH /home/dan/bin:/home/dan/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin/X11 You'll notice /usr/games is missing (it was there up until a few days ago). My /etc/profile makes no mention of PATH. My ~/.profile is the default and only has: if [ -d "$HOME/bin" ] ; then PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH" fi This only happens in gnome, not in tty1-6. This is missing from both gnome terminal and when I try to call applications from the applications dropdown. Anyone know what could be causing this? Thanks.

• D-LINK 2450U DSL router: Port forwarding forwading to the modem itself, not the specified IP

  I found a similar question but it has no satisfactory answers. I have a D-LINK 2540U DSL router. It has a basic port forwarding(under DNS - Virtual Servers) configuration in the administration panel where you specify: external port range, protocol, internal port range, server IP address and it is supposed to forward that port to that IP address. When I first set it up for a Real VNC connection it worked fine, just as I expected. Then I added a DynDNS configuration entry in the router's 'Dynamic DNS' section and added an additional SSH (22) forwarding rule. The SSH forwarding also worked fine (now with the dynamic hostname, but I suppose it doesn't make any difference as far as SSH is concerned). Then I removed the SSH rule and after that the VNC forwarding stopped working with the VNC client failing to connect (I have tried to connect with telnet and it also failed to connect, so it wasn't a VNC problem). After adding a rule for port 80 it turned out it would forward on port 80 though not to the specified server IP but to the modem itself. At least it is what it looks like, because it gives me the administration panel when I connect to my external IP (both using a browser and plain telnet in which case I can see that it is mini_hhtpd sitting on the port, which is obviously the modem's administration panel). Have anybody encountered a similar problem with port forwarding? I have tried to do a reset through the administration panel and to restore a backup of the settings made before I started playing with port forwarding, but it didn't help. Should I do a 'hard' reset with the button on the modem? Is it any different from the administration panel's reset (Restore default)?

  I am trying to insert an audio channel with a video: first of all I extract the audio from the original video for processing: ffmpeg -i lotr.mp4 lotr.wav I then extract all frames for later processing too: ffmpeg -i lotr.mp4 -f image2 %d.jpg When done processing audio and video streams, I try to create the video ffmpeg -f image2 -r 15 -i %d.jpg new.mp4 then merge with the audio: ffmpeg -i new.mp4 -i lotr.wav -map 0:0 -map 1:0 new_w_audio.mp4 Result: CPU activity = 100%, the process hangs and never returns. • IPFW not locking people out

  I've had some brute-forcing of my ssh connection recently, so I got fail2ban to hopefully prevent that. I set it up, and started testing it out by giving wrong passwords on my computer. (I have physical access to the server if I need to unblock myself) However, it never stops me from entering passwords. I see in /var/log/fail2ban.log that fail2ban kicked in and banned me, and there's a ipfw entry for my IP, but I'm not locked out. I've changed the configuration around, and then tried just using the ipfw command myself, but nothing seems to lock me out. I've tried the following blocks: 65300 deny tcp from 10.0.1.30 to any in 65400 deny ip from 10.0.1.30 to any 65500 deny tcp from 10.0.1.30 to any My firewall setup has a "allow ip from any to any" rule after these though, maybe that's the problem? I'm using Mac OS 10.6 (stock ipfw, it doesn't seem to have a --version flag) Thanks in advance.

• Bash script 'while read' loop causes 'broken pipe' error when run with GNU Parallel

  According to the GNU Parallel mailing list this is not a GNU Parallel-specific problem. They suggested that I post my problem here. The error I'm getting is a "broken pipe" error, but I feel I should first explain the context of my problem and what causes this error. It happens when trying to use any bash script containing a 'while read' loop in GNU Parallel. I have a basic bash script like this: #!/bin/bash # linkcheck.sh while read domain do host "$domain" done Assume that I want to pipe in a large list (250mb say). cat urllist | ./linkcheck.sh Running host command on 250mb worth of URLs is rather slow. To speed things up I want to break up the input into chunks before piping it and then run multiple jobs in parallel. GNU Parallel is capable of doing this. cat urllist | parallel --pipe -j0 parallel ./linkcheck.sh {} {} is substituted by the contents of urllist line-by-line. Assume that my systems default setup is capable of running 500ish jobs per instance of parallel. To get round this limitation we can parallelize Parallel itself: cat urllist | parallel -j10 --pipe parallel -j0 ./linkcheck.sh {} This will run 5000'ish jobs. It will also, sadly, cause the error "broken pipe" (bash FAQ). Yet the script starts to work if I remove the while read loop and take input directly from whatever is fed into {} e.g., #!/bin/bash # linkchecker.sh domain="$1" host "$1" Why will it not work with a while read loop? Is it safe to just turn off the SIGPIPE signal to stop the "broken pipe" message, or will that have side effects such as data corruption? Thanks for reading.

• Returning row values based on conditional formatting variables

  I'm not entirely sure how to properly explain this, but here we go... I'm trying to create a single budgeting document that allows me to manage purchasing and reconciliation for multiple projects. I would like to create separate sheets per project and have purchased items populate on a master sheet. Using conditional formatting, I've set one of the columns to display an item's status (waiting for approval, approved, ordered, received). I would like the contents of an entire row to populate in a new sheet table once the status is set to "Received." The sheet should update descendingly. I can't attach an image because I don't have a 10 reputation.. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Vertical alignment problem in textbox in MS Word 2007

  Hi, I pardon as its not a programming question at all. But if anybody can answer this it will be usefull for me. In MS word 2007 I drew a textbox and entered some text. Then I right clicked on textbox and went to format shape Then went to TextBox tab and reduced the top internal margin to 0.1 cm. But still it seems there is too much space at the top inside the textbox. I am not able to position the text exactly at the vertical middle of textbox. If I choose the auto-rezide option in format Shape, the textBox size is increases automatically but the text remains exactly at vertical and horizontal middle of textbox. but anyhow I need the textbox to be small. This is very minor but annoying problem. Can anybody help?

• Linksys Router/Tomato Firmware DNS issues

  I've got a WRT54GS that I've loaded the current version of Tomato onto. I entered static DHCP addresses in for the devices on my network, released and renewed the address on my desktop and tried to ping another computer. All I got was The request could not find host blah. Please check the name and try again. Now, I verified that my desktop and the target machine I'm trying to ping have both received their proper static DHCP lease and that their DNS server is the IP address of my router. What am I missing?

• Start script on network connect

  I am trying to get a GNU/Linux Bash script to run as soon as a network connection is established on my Raspberry Pi. I tried following the instructions on several pages: I have tried adding my script to /etc/network/if-up.d and running sudo chmod ugo+x on the file. I have tried adding the line post-up <path/to/script.sh> to /etc/network/interfaces I am really quite clueless here.   I'm getting this error message in the Action Center on Windows 7, and I can't seem to solve it through Windows or through searches on Google: RICOH R5C592 PCI-CardBus/IEEE-1394/SD Card/Memory Stick Controller is not compatible with this version of Windows.   Hello, I was working at my server, when in htop I just noticed something unusual. The syslog-ng process was listed as follows supervising syslog-ng /sbin/syslog-ng I don't know what it means. I tried to do man supervising but found nothing. supervising command doesn't exist too. Googling, I found a page about launchtool, but I can't find neither it or its man page in my system. I'm curious What does that executable/command/whatever do? Why today did I read that line in htop? Thank you. The current format which is followed by the OS [to show date-modified, etc.] is MM/DD/YYYY or M/D/YYYY, whereas I have been comfortable with DD/MM/YYYY or D/M/YYYY format. I know that you can not do his with the trial, but the MSDN iso is listed as "retail". I do not wish to use the MSDN activation key for this install.
