  This is my PC configuration, Should I upgrade my Windows XP to Windows 7. Currently I'm using Windows XP SP3 32 bit. Now will I get same performance or better performance or bad performance if I install Windows 7 on this system? Or would sticking with XP be better?   I need to use a java library that uses native code requiring a 32-bit jvm. I have 64-bit windows with 64-bit eclipse installed with 64-bit JDK7. In order to develop with it, do I need to have 32-bit JDK? Or would the JRE suffice? If it is possible to install both, what is the naming convention you use for the installation directory for the 32-bit jre or jdk? I have heard rumors there is a performance hit on virtual memory if both are installed, is this true?

  Is there a way to remove windows line endings on a basic windows 7 install. I'm working on a windows 7 computer with notepad and word 2010 at work. I'm trying to demo markdown without installing additional text editor, and keeping it installed locally. I've tried Word with replace on \r\n, special characters and other ways and it can't locate. Notepad same issue. Or is there a markdown converter that an online markdown converter that will handle windows line endings?

  Hi I am building a ROR development environment on a new computer with windows 7, now I have Ruby version 2.0.0 and Gems version 2.2.2 installed. Which version of Rails should I install? I saw this on rubyonrails.org/download : "We recommend Ruby 2.1.0 for use with Rails. We stopped supporting Ruby 1.8.x after Rails 3.2. Ruby 1.9.2+ will be supported until Rails 5." I will be working on a long-time project, I'm just trying to lessen the headaches I will have later. Right now, the latest Rails -v is 4.1.0 and they recommend Ruby 2.1.0 for use with Rails. I think the best option is to go with this set. Any other thoughts?

• Why does the CentOS 5.8 install give an error about CD-ROM drive when using HP ILO?

  CentOS 5.8 I'm trying to install CentOS 5.8 on a box. I'm connecting the ISO to the server via a virtual disk using HP ILO. It initially seems to boot fine but in the middle of the anaconda text-mode package installation, it gives the following error: CD Not Found CentOS CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the CentOS CD and press OK to retry. If I click OK, it gives me the same error. I don't understand how it could get this far and then complain about the CD-ROM drive. Any thoughts?

  I have a Acer Revo nettop. I wiped the XP Home install that came on the machine and put XP Pro on. Acer's support website would lead you to believe that this product does not exist. I know it has a NVIDIA ION LE chipset so I headed over to nvidia.com to download drivers. Ive downloaded and installed the Chipset drivers, Graphics Drivers, and HDMI audio drivers. I have no sound. Under Device Manager there is an unknown Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus. I do not have an HDMI cable to test hdmi audio. I would just like the standard audio mini-jack output to work. Anyone know of the correct driver or a generic driver that would work? Thanks

I do not want to use compatibility mode; even if I did it doesn't work. So, how can I spoof the installer to believe it is Windows Vista(or XP, or 7) so that it can proceed with the installation? Notes: This is an experimental machine, so I am not concerned about stability of the host or the application.

  I have an IBM running a Manjaro install that has already been used and settled into, with packages installed, browser profiles, etc, etc. The drive is 60gb, and it has a swap partition and an ext4 root partition. I need to move this profile to a Toshiba computer with a 320gb drive. How should I go about this? My inclination would be to shut down the toshiba, boot a live linux system, dd the whole 60gb drive to a file, boot the toshiba to a live system, then dd the file to its 320gb drive. Would this work? I know that it wouldn't with windows, but I believe this is an artificially imposed limitation from Microsoft. Is this correct, or is Linux similarly limited? If not, how could I go about this? Would clonezilla work, or would the hardware disparities prevent it from working?

  I have a shared RHEL 4 host account where I do not have root privileges. I would like to install Git and Bash Complete in a way that they can be upgraded easily. To date, I've just been installing from source providing $HOME as a prefix to autoconf. Obviously this isn't ideal as I need to hunt down the files associated with the version I'm upgrading away from and delete them. I've tried using rpm but I just get -bash: rpm: command not found back so it's not available. I also looked into checkinstall but it looks like that requires rpm, dpkg, or Slackware's package manager to be available. Is there anything out there that can be used like a package manager without requiring root access or an existing package manager?

  I bought the SanDisk ReadyCache 32GB SSD drive this week. I didn't know about the caching stuff and thought that I would be able to install Windows 8 on it. Now I'm using it as a cache drive with the ExpressCache software. But I wonder if it is possible to use this SSD as a primary system drive with an operating system installed on it. I've tried to format the disk via Windows Disc Manager Tool, but the format option is disabled. Only delete and information options are allowed. Can you help me with this?

After setup the /etc/apt/sources.list, I could do 'apt-get update'. But it missing dependency when I try to run 'apt-get install ntpdate'. Is there any method to let apt-get ignore some base packages? Because those package is build by my original embedded system.(eg. busybox).

  I have a Apple Magic Trackpad and I'd like to use it with my PC. I have no other Apple hardware besides the Trackpad. I do not have OSX and thus no Boot Camp CD. The Trackpad uses Bluetooth and will pair with Windows 7 without specific drivers (appears as an HID-Compliant Mouse), but all it will do is point and left click (physical click, no touch tap). With Apple's Windows driver update, I should be able to achieve: Tap to click Dragging Drag lock Secondary click Two-finger scrolling Two-finger secondary tap/click But how can I obtain this driver without Boot Camp installed? Apple's Boot Camp update EXE will not install on my PC (non-Apple hardware).

• KVM Guest not reachable from host

  Hello, I'm running Ubuntu server 9.10, installed KVM etc. Created the bridge network following instructions on help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/Networking Created a windows 2008 guest using virt-install command line (using virt-manager GUI from a remote Ubuntu desktop would not let me select the ISO location). I can however use a remote virt-manager to connect to the guest and complete the windows install. Within windows 2008 I changed the IP address but cannot ping from outside world. The bridge network appears fine - I'm not sure what else to look at! Here is the interfaces file: The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet manual # auto br0 iface br0 inet static address 60.234.64.50 netmask 255.255.255.248 network 60.234.0.0 broadcast 60.234.0.255 gateway 60.234.64.49 bridge_ports eth0 bridge_stp off bridge_fd 0 bridge_maxwait 0 auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.12.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.12.255 The ip of the windows server is 60.234.64.52 What else should I check?   I am running Windows 7 64-bit. I've installed Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode successfully. Next, I downloaded Ubuntu Server 9.04 32-bit. I created a new virtual machine with a dynamically expanding .vhd, loaded the Ubuntu .iso, and booted the machine. I successfully made it through the install, but when the machine reboots, I get a segmentation fault. Here is a screenshot. Has anyone successfully installed Ubuntu on Windows Virtual PC?

My problem: I want to create a bootable dvd to be able to restore same state(OS, configuration and apps) on another hardware(server). Some notes: I prefer ubuntu but my linux can be a different distributions if needed. w I prefer final result (bootable dvd) be simple and easy to use as installing a linux(ubuntu). I prefer a bootable DVD but if it's not possible, any other solution like partial backup/package even if needed to install first OS and then apply the package/backup/... can be good. • Why do I have no TTY on a basic Ubuntu 9.10 server install?

  I have reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 Server several times on a bog standard 1RU server and each time I finish the install and reboot I see GRUB run and am then presented with a black screen. The machine is running just fine, as I am able to SSH in, but I can't see anything on the attached monitor. I have a simple LCD screen connected via VGA and a signal is apparently being output to it, as it doesn't go asleep. Looking at /var/log/syslog I see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 rsyslogd-2039: Could no open output file '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ] However, I later see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 kernel: [ 0.001368] console [tty0] enabled Any thoughts? • Is it possible to manually install RDP client 6.1 for platforms that aren't directly supported?

  I have some clients that need RDP client 6.1 in order to utilize the new easy print driver. However, the installer doesn't allow it to install on several platforms such as Windows Home Server or Windows Server 2003 because they are not XP. The version check prevents it going further. I'm reasonably confident that it should actually run however and want to try it. Has anyone done this before? what I should really ask is... what files should I manually copy (backing up originals first)... just the exe or are there lots of dependant dll's that need upgrading too?

• BIOS root kit? Or, how do I fresh install a clean BIOS?

  So I was installing questionable operating system onto my EEE pc and it required me to downgrade the BIOS which I really am not an expert at. I used a patch and it appeared to work. Now, I'm paranoid about the downgrade because, honestly, I have no idea where the code came from or what could be in it. My question, then, is it possible to "start over" completely fresh with my BIOS? As in wipe out the possibly malicious BIOS and go back to the manufacturer-provided one? Has anyone done something similar to this? I just want to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix to the EEE pc 1000 but I want to make sure the BIOS are secure. Any advice would help tremendously, or am I just being uber paranoid? BIOS are definitely not my strength.

  I'm trying to use the htscanner PECL extension on my CentOS 5/PHP 5.2.6 machine, but there's a bug in the latest version where a newline character is added to the end of every php_value directive. This behavior causes my include_path and error_log values not to work. The bug and the patch are documented on the PECL site: http://pecl.php.net/bugs/bug.php?id=16891 I've downloaded the latest version, applied the patch, and re-compressed the package — but I can't get the PECL installer to accept it — or any local package, for that matter. I've tried every variation of the pecl install syntax that I can think of, and the only times I'm able to get it to work, it downloads an online copy first and ignores the local copy. Can anyone recommend a method for installing a PECL extension from a local file? Thanks for your consideration.

I have to help someone get this up and running on a Ubuntu 9.10 server and I don't know if there is any special configuration or install steps I need to follow in Ubuntu 9.10 to get it up and running. I know in older versions of Ubuntu, specifically, special OS changes and configuration needs to be done in order to get it to work properly. Do I need to work around any of those issues in 9.10?
