  • Games on windows 8 in bootcamp lag even on lowest graphics

    I've been playing Crysis 2 and Skyrim on my Retina MacBookPro (10,1) for months now. The two games used to run super smoothly even on nearly maxed out settings. This laptop has an Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics card inside, it runs great. But I recently replaced my Windows 8 consumer preview with the retail copy, and since then, 3D games lag in this odd way, no matter what the graphics settings. Every second Skyrim and Crysis alternates between running smoothly and lagging. It's a cyclical lag that comes and goes like clockwork. I can turn the graphics down to 800x600 with no antialiasing and low texture quality, and it runs much smoother on the "up" motion of the cycle, but every second it moves back into this lag spike. I've tried installing beta graphics drivers, re installing the operating system, re installing the bootcamp support software, and freeing up space (I have about 20 GB free). I can't figure out what suddenly caused this other than some obscure difference between the consumer preview and the retail version. What can I try? Is my video card failing? These would only have a small disk for guest swap files, a CPU (XEON preferred), 32 Gb of memory and minimal graphics. The virtual machines need to be up but demand will be quite low. Any thought on case, format processors, fans, motherboard, et al? Small, quiet and lots of RAM are the operative words here.

  • Ubuntu loading stops ?

    I don't know why, or how... but my ubuntu's loading / booting stops right after the ubuntu logo appearing.. An underscore appears in the right top of the screen: _ then, it disappears leaving the whole screen black Version is 9.10 ,Kernel is .20 I have tryed recovering mode and selected recover damaged packages option, but it didn't do any good.. I have very important files in Ubuntu that I need to copy to a pen drive or something, today.. The terminal mode is working, so i think i can do this there.. My questions: How can I get my Ubuntu to load? Is it possible to copy the files i need via terminal mode? I dont know if with other of the previous kernels it would work... but I had configured my grub (inside Ubuntu's gui) to show only the last kernel... and now i can't select any other kernel then .20 because I don't know a way to configure Grub unless via Ubuntu's gui... My hardware: ATI Mobility Radeon 4650 HD P7450 2.13Ghz Core duo 4Gb DDR2

  • "Windows failed to start" loop with 0xc0000225. No install discs, EasyRE/USB iso hasn't worked

    I've been suffering from this "Windows failed to start" loop with 0xc0000225 for 3 days now and I still can't fix it. The major problem is that I don't have any sort of installation disc. However, I have tried EasyRE via both CD and USB but both result in the same problem.  I try to perform an 'Automated Repair' on my computer and I get in red text "The selected partition is corrupted and could not be accessed or repaired. Please select a different drive to continue." It is also labeled as NO under Active. Since I do not have a the installation discs, I made a USB with a Windows_7_Recovery_Disc  iso (as shown here http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31541-windows-7-usb-dvd-download-tool.html) but it also doesn't work. I get a blue screen that says "RECOVERY You pc needs to be repaired. The application or operating system could not be uploaded because a required file is missing or contains errors... File:\WINDOWS\system32\winload.efi Error code: 0xc0000225 You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media, contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer." Thanks in advance! Miguel

    my computer wont load past the windows logo, when it finishing loading the logo i see a blue screen quickly flashes on and off just a glimpse of it but i recognise that sreen anywhere i know its a serious error message screen, after that it just shows a black screen with a movable cursor, i've tried to repair, load last good configuration, but nothing seems to work, i'm running windows 7, its a toshiba laptop, 4 GB SDRAM, 320 GB HDD, Intel Pentium Processor T4200, dual core processor.

  • Can't use Bootcamp partition for Windows 8 installation

    I'm trying to install Windows 8 with Bootcamp on my Macbook Pro. Sadly it won't let me get past the disk partition choice (even after formatting the Bootcamp-drive). It says: Windows can't be installed on this storage device. The chosen harddisk contains a MBR-partition-table.   • Starting Chrome without any window

    Hi, I've a situation where I want to start Google Chrome browser without any window appearing in Linux. This might sound weird but my intention is launch it faster than it already does. I've noticed that if Chrome is already running, then opening a new windows opens in a snap!!. I thought I'll keep it running in background and when needed open a new window by clicking its icon. I've checked almost all command line switches from Chrome source but couldn't succeed. Any ideas? Thanks in advance..

    I'm trying to get a unicorn server to start when the server boots. Now I get the following error sudo: unicorn_rails: command not found I've searched high and low to what could cause this, but I'm afraid I've tapped my limited understanding of Linux. From what I can understand is that although sudo should use the ubuntu user to execute the commands, it still uses the environment of the root user, which isn't configured to run ruby or unicorn. Does anybody have any experience with this?

    I need to know how to automatically load a kernel module at startup on FC9. All the sites talk about adding an entry to /etc/modules.conf.... But that does not exist on FC9... Instead I have /etc/modprobe.d/ directory... Now, I suppose I need to put a file in this dir for my driver but I have no idea how to write this file... I just need "modprobe name" to be run...

    Very weird, i had opened notepad ++ and working on my CSS codes for my website, suddenly my little niece unplugged the computer, when i re-start the computer and opened again the same CSS codes file in notepad ++, so all i am seeing is "NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL" there is no codes, all lost. I opened the same CSS codes file in other editors and its all empty no codes.. is there a way to fix it, because it was my hard work. and what can be the cause? Thank you.

    How to turn of the display in Windows 8 without locking or making computer go to sleep ? The problem is that when I enable ‘Turn off display after x minutes’ feature from control panel, the device goes into sleep after ‘x’ minutes. It seems that both the options – turn off display/put computer to sleep are connected. It devices goes automatically to sleep mode as soon as the display is turned off. So, is there any method to turn off the display of the device without it going into sleep mode ? Someone wrote in the microsoft forum " The whole key to this problem seems to be the "Turn off the Display" setting. If you have that set to 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, etc...the computer will go to sleep one minute after you lock the screen. With this setting set to "Never", it doesn't do it. So something is wrong there." I want to turnoff the display but don't want to lock the device. Is that also possible ? Thanks

    I have serveral PCs running Windows 7 in different falvors (32- / 64-bit / Professional / Ultimate / ATI / Nvidia) - they all have one problem in common... ...if I don't work on any of them for a longer time and the screen goes off as it should be (all default settings!) they sometimes go into some kind of sleep mode where I get to see the desktop or whatever I did before leaving after moving the mouse or pressing a key - but nothing reacts for a different amount of time from serveral seconds to serveral minutes! Any hint that helps solving this anoying problem would be very welcome ;-)

    I found in the /etc/hostname my IP-address, than I deleted it and each time I use sudo - I get a message and a system email sudo: unable to resolve host (none) or if in the /etc/hostname is saved myhostname than sudo: unable to resolve host (myhostname). I know it is used to set the system's hostname via /etc/init.d/hostname.sh while booting process, but what is this setting required for (programs, services, daemons ...)? What if i set to localhost (so it doesn't happen any sudo: unable to resolve host (none) anymore, but is it still ok?)? UPD1: I found some information here: http://jblevins.org/log/hostname, but it is all about how to use it and not about - why it is required.

  • Windows always logs in to temporary profile (thinks it is in D while it is in C)

    I have Windows on C: Disk 0 Partition 1 When I start it works fine until the login screen. When I log in, it starts to display "preparing your desktop.." and logs in to a temporary profile. I have to run explorer.exe manually then using task manager. If I execute %SystemRoot% it tells me that Windows could not find D:\Windows. (while Windows is in C:) I have no such drive as D then why Windows is thinking it is in D? I've tried this Bootmanager is missing but it did not work. Bootrec /ScanOS from Windows setup gives me Total identified Windows installations: 0 Also note that Windows Setup correctly thinks windows is installed on C but Windows itself thinks it is on D.

    I currently have Windows 8 Consumer Preview installed on a Mac Bootcamp Partition. Microsoft recently released the Windows 8 Release Preview, and I'd like to upgrade, but I'm worried that upgrading to the Release Preview (while in the Windows 8 partition) will erase my other partitions (ex. the Mac OS X partition). By upgrading from Consumer to Release (using the installer on Microsoft's website) while IN the Windows 8 partition, will it end up re-formating the whole hard drive / erasing partitions / removing Mac OS X? Are there any 100% positive answers out there? Will this work, and if not then how would you suggest updating? Note: I have a Time Machine backup of my Mac, but it isn't the WHOLE Mac.

    I've been trying to follow Scott Hanselman's post on installing the Win8 RP on a vhd, using the win8 .iso on a dvd, but the install wont start.     This question already has an answer here: Why is my USB mouse disconnecting and reconnecting randomly and often? 7 answers I have a mid 2010 iMac with a Logitech G500 mouse which works fine on OS X. I game on Windows 7 in bootcamp, and for a month now I have been getting random mouse disconnects while gaming. Sometimes none, sometimes 2-3 per minute. The mouse lights go off and I get the disconnect sound from Windows 7 then it connects again after a second or two. I tried changing the port I connect the mouse to, but still the same thing. The only devices on USB are Apple keyboard with Apple extension cord, the mouse, and a Creative SoundBlaster Tactic 3D Alpha USB Gaming Headset. Any ideas?

    Hi so I think the USB ports on the front of my desktop PC are eating all the devices that are plugged in. (I've found with a couple of USB disks I put at the start of the year, were then unusable on any device after wards). If this is the case, what's likely to be the problem, and how do I fix it? What would a good, simple way to diagnose the problem be? I'm a bit scared to put any of my USB devices in, because that sounds expensive. (I'm thinking I might look out for some cheap old disks).

When machine asks me how I want to install Ubuntu on my computer (install Ubuntu inside windows 7, replace windows 7 with Ubuntu, something else) I chose inside windows 7 and clicked continue then here is the trouble machine restart itself every time. It is not suppose to restart.
