• Joomla, drupal or dotnetnuke?

  I'm in the process of starting my own podcasting website. I'm trying to find a good cms to use. At work I'm a .net developer and we are starting to use DNN for some small projects around the office. I'd like the new business to be fully open source but it might be nice to use Dnn cause I will already have some experience with it from work. I'm worried that I'll be spreading myself too thin learning php/Lamp at home and .net at work. What does everyone recommend?

• WPF data grid for financial style reporting?

  Hello, I'm looking for a decent WPF data grid or solution involving one to represent financial data. I've looked at many - the WPF one, XCeed, Ingragistics, DevExpress, etc.... but none of them seem to offer the simple requirement I have: I want to be able to display group subtotals in their columns in the group row, e.g. GROUP 1 xxxx.xx GROUP 2 xxxx.xx ROW 1 xx.xx ROW 2 xx.xx Does anyone know of a grid that does this, or a nice supporting collection that implements aggregate functions (group totals would need to be used in individual line items) so that existing grids with a bit of XAML styling would work? • How can I call model methods or properties from Django Admin?

  Is there a natural way to display model methods or properties in the Django admin site? In my case I have base statistics for a character that are part of the model, but other things such as status effects which affect the total calculation for that statistic: class Character(models.Model): base_dexterity = models.IntegerField(default=0) @property def dexterity(stat_name): total = self.base_dexterity total += sum(s.dexterity for s in self.status.all()]) return total It would be nice if I could display the total calculated statistic alongside the field to change the base statistic in the Change Character admin page, but it is not clear to me how to incorporate that information into the page.

• For what to use VI?

  I recently started picking up VI, going through some tutorials and trying to get used to it. But I still have some questions about it. It seems to be nice for small one file changes, but as soon as I start to try doing bigger things it seems to be lacking. For example I'm used to have code formatting, import organizing, simple overview over all packages and other things that an IDE gives me. I saw some tutorials on how to use VI as an IDE, but it felt awkward at best. Now I'm just wondering, what are the typical use cases for VI? Is it typically used to edit small files, or can it be used for larger projects? And if you use it in larger projects, how do you make it work? Or would it be a lot easier to use an IDE with VI keybindings?

• Spring: Inject static member (System.in) via constructor

  I wrote some sort of console client for a simple application. To be more flexible, I thought it would be nice to only depend on java.io.Input-/OutputStream, instead of accessing System.in/out directly. I renamed the class ConsoleClient to StreamClient, added setters and made sure that the instance fields are used instead of System.in/out. At the moment my client code looks like this: ApplicationContext appCtx = new ClassPathXmlApplicationContext("..."); StreamClient cc = (StreamClient) appCtx.getBean("streamClient"); cc.setInputStream(System.in); cc.setOutputStream(System.out); cc.run(); // start client Question: Is there a way to move lines 3 and 4 into the Spring configuration (preferably constructor injection)? • SQL latest/top items in category

  What is a scalable way to select latest 10 items from each category. I have a schema list this: item category updated so I want to select 10 last update items from each category. The current solution I can come up with is to query for categories first and then issue some sort of union query: query = none for cat in categories: query += select top 10 from table where category=cat order by updated I am not sure how efficient this will be for bigger databases (1 million rows). If there is a way to do this in one go - that would be nice. Any help appreciated.

• Managing Team Development on Shared Website

  I need to know the best way to manage team web-development on a shared server (hostgator). I have done some individual web development on a shared server in the past, and I have always setup SVN through SSH to have a pretty-nice development workflow (version control, quick-commits, work though eclipse/subclipse, etc). However, I also know that with that setup, I had to make some pretty-sophisticated post-commit hooks to export the repository to /public_html; and, therefore, making the repository code testable. This seems like a tedious and error-prone setup for an entire team. I would like to be able to: Easily test the latest code in the repository. Somewhat easily move the code in the repository to production. Use an IDE like eclipse/subclipse to easily work with the repository. With this in mind, does anyone know of a good version-control/repository setup for developing a website with a team of about 4-5 people? Thanks a lot.

• How to organize asp.net mvc project (using entity framework) and a corresponding database project?

  I recently switched to vs2010 and am experimenting with asp.net MVC2. I am building a simple website and use the entity framework to design the data model. From the .edmx file, I generate the database tables. After a few iterations, I decided that it would be nice to have version control of the database schema as well, and therefore I added a database project into which I imported the script that is generated from the datamodel. As a result, I have to generate the sql every time that I change the model and redo the import. The database project automatically updates the database. Although the manual steps to generate the sql and the import are annoying, this works pretty well, until I wanted to add the standard tables for user accounts/authorization etc. I can use the framework tools to add the necessary tables, views etc. to the database, but as I do not want to have them in the .edmx model I end up with a third manual step. Is anybody facing similar issues?

  Could somebody explain to me the architecture behind chatroulette? I was thinking about a similar project that would only implement Audio support (for starters). Is the best way to set this up a flash server? If so, how should I go about getting into flash, will I need flex 4? I have some beginner experience with c++, c# and java but I have never developed anything for the web. I was also wondering how the randomizer matches up the participants. How would you code something like this. Im obviously pretty clueless here and I'd greatly appreciate some advice regarding this problem -- I don't expect copy and paste solutions. It would just be nice to hear how you guys would tackle this problem. Thank you very much

• How to set jQuery UI toggle programmatically?

  I noticed it is possible to set the value of a jQuery UI slider in the following way: $("#mySlider").slider("value", 42); This triggers the event handlers attached to the slider as expected. Now I'm trying to do the same trick using a button (toggle). There does not appear to be a nice way to do this in the API. I might just be missing something simple. I tried the following with no results: $("#myButton").button().click(); Any ideas how to handle that in this case are welcome. Note that it would be awesome to find a solution that applies for a buttonset as well.

  Hello, I am currently designing a low level network serialization protocol (in fact, a refinement of an existing protocol). As the work progress, pen and paper documents start to show their limits: i have tons of papers, new and outdated merged together, etc... And i can't show anything to anyone since i describe the protocol using my own notation (a mix of flow chart & C structures). I need a software that would help me to design a network protocol. I should be able to create structures, fields, their sizes, their layout, etc... and the software would generate some nice UMLish diagrams.

  Hi, I'm currently testing Vulnerabiltys to SQL Injections for my companys application as an it-trainee. So I found, that the application is indeed vulnerable to injections because I can alter some of the insert statements. So I altered the insert Statement to this: INSERT INTO tablename( column, column1, column2, column3, column4,column5, column6, column7, column8 ) VALUES ( 10965972, 185796154, 25, 23,2023, '', CURRENT_DATE, 'v0201100', 18); DELETE * FROM tablename;-- , 2023,'a', CURRENT_DATE, 'v0201100', 18 ) I thought this should be a correct statement, but the MySQL Server returned this Error: MySQL Error: 1064 (You have an error in your SQL syntax;[...] Would be nice if somebody could help and tell my why the syntax is wrong... In other words, unless I'm missing something, the above could have been nice and valid syntactic sugar for: void foo(Iterator<X> it) { for (X x; it.hasNext();) { x = it.next(); bar(x); baz(x); } }

• Library for polygon operations

  I've recently encountered a need for a library or set of libraries to handle operations on 2D polygons. I need to be able to perform boolean/clipping operations (difference and union) and triangulation. So far the libraries I've found are poly2tri, CGAL, and GPC. Poly2tri looks good for triangulation but I'm still left with boolean operations, and I'm unsure about its maturity. CGAL and GPC are only free if my own project is free. My particular project isn't commercial, so I'm hesitant to pay or request for any licenses. But I may want to use my code for a future commercial project, so I'm hesitant about CGAL's open source licenses and GPC's freeware-only restriction. There doesn't seem to be any polygon clipping libraries with nice BSD-style licenses.

• In search of a packaged .Net security solution for web-forms.

  We are looking for a security solution for asp.net that has security down to the control level. This is not a necessity but, it would be nice. At the very least it needs to extend-able to allow for control level permissions. The solution should have an administration panel of some sort. It also needs to support roles, groups, and individual permissions. We haven't seen anything like this in the marketplace -- we are in the process of rolling our own solution. We'd rather use an off the shelf solution.

• How to refresh an activity? Map View refresh fails

  Hi Guys, after implementing some Android Apps, including several Map activities, I try to refresh the activity when the GPS listener's onLocationChanged() mehtod is called. I have no idea how to tell the map activity to refresh on its own and display the new coords... the coords to store will have to be in global values, so that the location listener will have access to it. My question: Should I send ctrl+c (SIGINT) to the input NSPipe for my NSTask? inputPipe = [NSPipe pipe]; taskInput = [inputPipe fileHandleForWriting]; NSString dataString = @"\cC"; [taskInput writeData:[dataString dataUsingEncoding: [NSString defaultCStringEncoding]]]; Alternatively, I was thinking about using kill( pid, SIGINT ); but it would be much more complicated since the process ID has to be determined via a detour ([task processIdentifier] does not help here) - the original NSTask calls: /bin/bash -c sudo -S | mypassword .... • How to get equivalent of ResultSetMetaData without ResultSet

  Hey Guys - I need to resolve a bunch of column names to column indexes (so as to use some of the nice ResultSetMetaData methods). However, the only way that I know how to get a ResultSetMetaData object is by calling getMetaData() on some ResultSet. The problem I have with that is that grabbing a ResultSet takes up uneccesary resources in my mind - I don't really need to query the data in the table, I just want some information about the table. Does anyone know of any way to get a RSMD object without getting a ResultSet (from a potentially huge table) first? Thanks!

• FireBug - inspect element problem -- showing different interface?

  When I used to use Firebugs inspect elements feature it displayed the results like this below. Nice, nested tags on the left...css style on the right. Recently, however, when I try to inspect elements it always shows this: I've tried reverting to older versions of FireBug (can't remember if it started after an update?).. I've poked around the settings... Can't find why it's different. The interface it's showing now is completely useless for figuring out what's going on in the html / css.

• Using HTTP status codes to reflect success/failure of Web service request?

  I'm implementing a Web service that returns a JSON-encoded payload. If the service call fails -- say, due to invalid parameters -- a JSON-encoded error is returned. I'm unsure, however, what HTTP status code should be returned in that situation. On one hand, it seems like HTTP status codes are for HTTP: even though an application error is being returned, the HTTP transfer itself was successful, suggesting a 200 OK response. On the other hand, a RESTful approach would seem to suggest that if the caller is attempting to post to a resource, and the JSON parameters of the request are invalid somehow, that a 400 Bad Request is appropriate. I'm using Prototype on the client side, which has a nice mechanism for automatically dispatching to different callbacks based on HTTP status code (onSuccess and onFailure), so I'm tempted to use status codes to indicate service success or failure, but I'd be interested to hear if anyone has opinions or experience with common practice in this matter.   Hey all, After the unfortunate realization that Firefox is just not going to play nice with an embedded HTML5 video with my server set up, I've decided to go the JW Player route, since it's compatible with iPads and iPhones. I can get the file to show up on my page, but it's big and heavy. I would like for it to be just the video, no controls. Autoplay and on loop. Can you help me out? • Recommendations for a google finance-like interactive chart control

  I need some sort of interactive chart control for my .NET-based web app. I have some wide XY charts, and the user should be able to interactively scroll and zoom into a specific window on the x axis. Something that acts similar to the google finance control would be nice, but without the need for the date labels or the news event annotations. Also, I'd prefer to avoid Flash, if that's even possible. Can someone please give some recommendations of something that might come close? EDIT: the "real" google timeline visualization is for date-based data. I just have numeric data. I tried to use that control for non-date data, but it seems to always want to show a date and demands that the first data column actually be a date.

• What features are important in a programming language for beginners?

  I was talking with some of the mentors in a local robotics competition for 7th and 8th level kids. The robot was using PBASIC and the parallax Basic Stamp. One of the major issues was this was short term project that required building the robot, teaching them to program in PBASIC and having them program the robot. All in only 2 hours or so a week over a couple months. PBASIC is kinda nice in that it has built in features to do everything, but information overload is possible to due this. My thought are simplicity is key. When you have kids struggling to grasp: if X10 then There is not much point in throwing "proper" object oriented programming at them. What are the essentials needed to foster an interest in programming?

I have a connection string in hibernate config file and in app.config file of another project. it would be nice for anyone to be able to set the connection string into this library project and use it. How to do this? I d like this class library to use the same database of the project that s imported. How to set hibernate connection string programatically? same idea for log4net.
