• Python, web log data mining for frequent patterns

  Hello! I need to develop a tool for web log data mining. Having many sequences of urls, requested in a particular user session (retrieved from web-application logs), I need to figure out the patterns of usage and groups (clusters) of users of the website. I am new to Data Mining, and now examining Google a lot. Found some useful info, i.e. querying Frequent Pattern Mining in Web Log Data seems to point to almost exactly similar studies. So my questions are: Are there any python-based tools that do what I need or at least smth similar? Can Orange toolkit be of any help? Can reading the book Programming Collective Intelligence be of any help? What to Google for, what to read, which relatively simple algorithms to use best? I am very limited in time (to around a week), so any help would be extremely precious. What I need is to point me into the right direction and the advice of how to accomplish the task in the shortest time. Thanks in advance!

• Triangulation in 3D Space

  Disclaimer: This is for class, however I'm fresh out of ideas and a nudge in the right direction would be much appreciated. Also, this needs to be implemented in raw C, so no fancy libraries can be used. I have to write a search and rescue simulator for submarines, it has to find a probe that is randomly placed in 3D space in a grid from of the MAX_XYZ (100000). The only tools I'm given are a "ping" which will give the magnitude of the distance between a certain sub and the probe. The goal is to optimize the costs of this entire operation so a brute force attempt, like looking at every single coordinate, won't work. Hence I was thinking triangulation. Now, it makes loads of sense to me, place three subs, each one of them uses their ping to get the distance between them and the probe. Since each sub have a known distance relative to one another, it's easy to build the base of a tetrahedron with them, and the results of the ping will point to a certain coordinate, the problem I'm having is how to figure out the elevation, or the height, of the tetrahedron. So what I have as data is the following: Distances between subs (In vector format) Angles between each subs (very easy to compute) Distance between each sub and the probe (3 segments from the base to the peak) Angles inside each of the outer 3 surfaces of the tetrahedron. I tried finding some sort of relationship with the vertices of the tetrahedron and the relative angles in each of them, however all I found had to deal with tetrahedrons built with equilateral triangles, which isn't much help. I have the impression this can be easily solved with trig but either I'm not seeing it or I need more coffee. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

  I'm using OpenGL to render camera perspectives, and a one point in my code I'm trying to take the direction of the light (shown here as type "Vector4") and multiply it by a matrix of type "Matrix4x4" that represents the Modelview transformation (sorry if this is not making any sense, this is for a school project, as such I'm still learning about this stuff) Anyway, my code goes as follows... Vector4 lightDirection = data->dir * follow->getModelviewMatrix().getInverse().getTranspose(); data->dir = lightDirection; setLight(*data); this give me the following error: passing 'const vec4<double>' as 'this' argument of 'vec4<T>& vec4<T>::operator=(const vec4<T>&)[with T = double]' discards qualifiers Again, much of this code is prewritten for the class (namely the vector and matrix types) but if someone could just help me decipher what the error means it would be much appreciated! I can give more information as needed. I figured 'data' or 'data-dir' were const, however I can find no mention of either of them to be. • Rails - Beginner wants feedback on how they've modeled their app and how to do it better.

  I think the way I've modelled my app is a bit fishy and i need to rejig things, im just not sure how. I've already re-jigged and refactored before. It took a long time ( I'm a beginner ) and I'm hesitant to it again in case i head off in the wrong direction again. Basic Idea, user can submit an answer, another user can mark it correct or incorrect. If incorrect they have to write the correct answer. Users can view their and everybody else's correct and incorrect answers. So I did it this way class Answer has_one: correction end class Correction belongs_to :answer end when a user marks an answer as correct, I set checked_at:DateTime and checked_by_id:integer on the Answer object to keep track of who checked the answer and when. For incorrect answers I create a correction object which holds the correct answer and again checked_by and checked_at details. I don't like this because I have checked_by and checked_at in both models. It just doesn't sit right. Possible solutions are: Create a third model such as VerifiedAnswer and move the checked_by/at attributes to that. It will handle the situtation where an answer is marked correct. Or are these models thin enough (they dont have any other attributes) that I can just have one model ( Answer ) that has all the attributes to store all this information?

• Using Zend_Db and multiple tables

  I have a normalized database that stores locations of files on the internet. A file may have multiple locations spread across different sites. I am storing the urls in two parts (Site.UrlStart, FileLocation.UrlEnd). The UrlEnd is the part unique to that file (for the site). Simplified Db structure: I am using Zend_Db as my ORM (If it is that), with classes for the tables inheriting from Zend_Db_Table_Abstract. The issue is that retrieving the location data (e.g. the url) requires the use of multiple tables and as far as I can make out and I would either have to use both table classes (thereby exposing my table structure) or scatter sql all over my application, neither of which sound appealing. The only solution I can see is to create a façade that acts like Zend_Db_Table_Abstract (Maybe inherits from it?) and hides the fact that the data is actually on two tables. My questions are as follows: Am I going in the right direction in creating a façade class (Are there other alternatives)? Should the facade class inherit from Zend_Db_Table_Abstract?

  (I'm just learning rails so....) I have a photo model and a gallery model, habtm associations and a join table. I'm making a photo gallery. The gallery page has a title field and description field. User creates gallery title, then goes to the photo page and checkboxes each image they want in that gallery. • How can I pull multiple rows from a MySQL table and use all of them automatically for the same thing

  Basically, I have multiple URL's stored in a MySQL table. I want to pull those URLs from the table and have cURL connect to all of them. Currently I've been storing the URL's in the local script, but I've added a new page that I can add and remove them from the database, and I'd like the page to reflect it appropriately. • How to calculate the y-pixels of someones weight on a graph? (math+programming question)

  I'm not that smart like some of you geniuses. I need some help from a math whiz. My app draws a graph of the users weight over time. I need a surefire way to always get the right pixel position to draw the weight point at for a given weight. For example, say I want to plot the weight 80.0(kg) on the graph when the range of weights is 80.0 to 40.0kg. I want to be able to plug in the weight (given I know the highest and lowest weights in the range also) and get the pixel result 400(y) (for the top of the graph). The graph is 300 pixels high (starts at 100 and ends at 400). The highest weight 80kg would be plot at 400 while the lowest weight 40kg would be plot at 100. And the intermediate weights should be plotted appropriately. • Weird send() problem (with Wireshark log)

  I had another question about this issue, but I didn't ask properly, so here I go again! I'm sending a file by sending it in chunks. Right now, I'm playing around with different numbers for the size of that chunk, to see what size is the most efficient. When testing on the localhost, any chunk size seems to work fine. But when I tested it over the network, it seems like the maximum chunk size is 8191 bytes. If I try anything higher, the transfer becomes extremely, painfully, slow. To show what happens, here are the first 100 lines of Wireshark logs when I use a chunk size of 8191 bytes, and when I use a chunk size of 8192 bytes: (the sender is 192.168.0.102, and the receiver is 192.168.0.100) 8191: http://pastebin.com/E7jFFY4p 8192: http://pastebin.com/9P2rYa1p Notice how in the 8192 log, on line 33, the receiver takes a long time to ACK the data. This happens again on line 103 and line 132. I believe this delay is the root of the problem. Note that I have not modified the SO_SNDBUF option nor the TCP_NODELAY option. So my question is, why am I getting delayed ACKs when sending files in chunks of 8192 bytes, when everything works fine when using chunks of 8191 bytes? Edit: As an experiment, I tried to do the file transfer in the other direction (from 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.102), and surprisingly, any number worked! (Although numbers around 8000 seemed to perform the smoothest). So then the problem is with my computer! But I'm really not sure what to check for. • Dynamic Data Extract Tools

  I've been searching around for a few weeks now for a tool that either is fully built or a direction of something I could build for dynamically extracting data via a web interface. Basically, what I'm looking for is a way to give users a list of all available data objects from our database and then let them pick ones from the list they'd like to view and set parameters then export the results to an excel file. Right now we're doing it purely with SQL statements but we have hundreds of objects so as you might imagine, those statements are really complex and prone to errors. It would be great if there was a tool available to do this or if someone had an idea of an easy way to organize this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We've looked at BI tools like QlikView and Tableau but that is probably overkill for what we're trying to do. The open-source BI tools we've looked at seemed really primitive in their functionality. The other thing we looked at was MSAS (our DB is SQL Server) but I'd prefer something that was more database-agnostic and lived on a web server instead of on the database.

• Fake location for the device (custom)

  I know there are a few apps out there to fake a devices location but specifically what i want to do is use a location grabbed from a url. What direction should I look for setting the location on the device. The scenario i have is a jailbroken Wi-Fi iPad tethered to a nexus one. The nexus one would host a background service that when a request is recieved, it would respond with gps data of its current location. The jailbroken ipad would have a background service that either updated the location on a time interval, or on a per request basis (depending on how i have to implement it) by submitting a request to the tethered nexus one service. That data would then be set on the ipad and an application requesting location would get the service data. The goal is to recreate the location faker app's functionality with the exception of the spoofed location comes from the nexus ones gps via the service but i have not yet found out how to set the location data for the device. I can ofcourse implement this in a per app basis but it would be awesome to have any app be able to use it.

• C++ Instantiate class and add name to array/vector then cycle through update functions from the array

  I have a bunch of classes in a basic (and badly coded!) game engine that are currently instantiated in the code and have to have their individual update functions called. What I want to do is be able to create an instance of a class, pass the name to an array, and then subsequently cycle through the array to call the update functions of each class. I'm unsure as to whether or not this is an impossible or spectacularly stupid way of trying to manage objects, so please tell me if it is. So currently I might have manually instantiated Enemy class a couple of times: Enemy enem1; Enemy enem2; I then have to update them manually in the game loop: enem1.update(); enem2.update(); What method should I use to be able to spawn and destroy instances of the enemy class during gametime? Is it possible to populate an array with instantiated names and then do something like (and i'm aware this doesn't work); array[x].update(); Then iterate through the names in the array? Anything that even points me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

• how to make custom ROMs for lesser-known Android devices (i.e., WellcoM A69)

  Hi, I have a WellcoM A69 Android phone I would like to start hacking. I bought it in Thailand (I think WellcoM is a Thai company). However, the docs don't explain how to get a recovery menu or anything like that. I would like to figure out how to make custom ROMs for it, because it doesn't have any Google Experience apps and I also want to change the boot screen. How can I go about doing this? If I can't do this, I want to at least be able to use the device in the Eclipse debugger. I select the debugging option under applications but the device still isn't recognized. Is this something that can be disabled by the manufacturer? In any case, I would like to re-enable it if a custom ROM can allow this. If this cannot be done at all, please at least point me in the direction of where I can start writing/building my own ROMs for the G1? I figured that would be a good starting point for learning. • SQL queries to determine all values that would satisfy an arbitrary query

  I'm trying to figure out how to efficiently run a set of queries that will provide a new table of all values that would return results for an arbitrary query. Say my table has a schema like: id name age city What is an efficient way to list all values that would return results for an arbitrary query, say "NOT city=X AND age BETWEEN Y and Z"? My naive approach for this would be to use a script and recurse through all possible combinations of {city, age, age} and see which SELECTs return more than 0 results, but that seems incredibly inefficient. I've also tried building large joins on {city, age, age} as well and basically using that table as an argument list to the query, but that quickly becomes an impossibility for queries on many columns. For simple conjunctive equality queries, i.e. "name=X and age=Y", this is much simpler, as I can do something like SELECT name, age, count(*) AS count FROM main GROUP BY name, age HAVING count > 0 But I'm having difficulty coming up with a general approach for anything more complicated than that. Any pointers in the right direction would be most helpful, thanks.

• How do I add events to nested server controls? (ASP.Net)

  I am building a custom master page type control i.e. sort of like a datagrid but should be easier to add custom functionality into it. It's going great but part of the desired functionality is to have a paging control that switches on and off and part of that control would be a textbox that displays the current page number and on TextChanged redirects to the new page of the dataset. The problem I'm having is that technically the textbox which has its event fired is embedded in a control that is embedded in the control you actually put on the page sort of like Page  | Display Control  | Paging Control  | Textbox Buried all the way down there the event is not firing. Worse the postback javascript isn't even being written onto the page (Nothing on the page posts back so far this is the only bit that really needs to). I've been trawling around Google for quite a while now and picked up that I need to implement INamingContainer (done) and I need to add the control into the page's control tree (is Pre_Init too late for that? When's a good time to Add the Control to the page?) then the event should fire, apparently. But I've been unable to find an example of best practice on this there are quite a few near misses where people are having button angst but this isn't a button. So can anyone point me in the direction of getting a control embedded in a control embedded in a control added to a page to behave properly?

• Hibernate Relationship Mapping/Speed up batch inserts

  I have 5 MySQL InnoDB tables: Test,InputInvoice,InputLine,OutputInvoice,OutputLine and each is mapped and functioning in Hibernate. I have played with using StatelessSession/Session, and JDBC batch size. I have removed any generator classes to let MySQL handle the id generation- but it is still performing quite slow. Each of those tables is represented in a java class, and mapped in hibernate accordingly. Currently when it comes time to write the data out, I loop through the objects and do a session.save(Object) or session.insert(Object) if I'm using StatelessSession. I also do a flush and clear (when using Session) when my line count reaches the max jdbc batch size (50). Would it be faster if I had these in a 'parent' class that held the objects and did a session.save(master) instead of each one? If I had them in a master/container class, how would I map that in hibernate to reflect the relationship? The container class wouldn't actually be a table of it's own, but a relationship all based on two indexes run_id (int) and line (int). Another direction would be: How do I get Hibernate to do a multi-row insert?

  I have problem with rotating and moving image (UIView). But together this two animations don't work. Space Ship is rotating, but does not move in direction. Where my mistake? P.S. Early I have specify anchor point (0.5, 0.5). But when I rotate image it coordinates is changing.

• Manipulating data in sql / asp.net / c# - how?

  Not sure how to word the question... Basically, so far all my SQL stuff has been stored procedures and dumped into a gridview. The odd case where I had to perform an action based on a value (such as highlighting a row green if a certain value was true) were done as the gridview was rendering in one of the overrides. Now however I have to do something far more complicated - pull three sets of data down, run a series of checks on all three and some date related checks and stuff, then populate a gridview with some of the items. In logic terms, I want to run three queries, and store the lists of results (presumably in Lists?) then run some logic, then populate the gridview. Specifically what I don't know how to do is: Best way of pulling the data, and putting it into a List or other datastructure that lets me easily run through it, and retrieve data based on column (myList.age, or more likely, myList["Age"]). One I have compared the data, I assume I create a new list that will be put into the gridview... how do I put the contents of a list INTO a gridview? How would I add other stuff such as buttons or checkboxes at the same time? Any nudge in the right direction would be appreciated! Particularly doing cool stuff with lists and sql (if there is anything cool you can do with them)

  this questions was asked before and has had many responses. The problem is nothing i tried worked. Background: i use MAMP and all of my web project are located under WebProjects which I relocated out of its standard location within the MAMP folder in Applications. so my structure is something like this: Documents/WebProjects/GreatSite/Application/... What happened so far: my understanding is that removing index.php can be done either through httpd.conf or .htaccess. anytime i touched httpd.conf, Apache refuses to start. I tried various edits to .htaccess including the one in codeigniter.com/wiki/mod-rewrite and the last one from a post on SO which is this: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /index.php?/$1 [L] this give me the following error when i access the site: An Error Was Encountered Unable to determine what should be displayed. A default route has not been specified in the routing file. I have updated config.php to have $config['index_page'] = ''; and i have placed the .htaccess file in the GreatSite folder. One other note, my CI system folder is up a level from GreatSite. Not sure if this has any impact. also, apache has the module loaded. so, I'm hoping someone has successfully done this on MAMP and could provide direction specifically around the content of their .htaccess (or even httpd.conf), it's location and any other mods they had to make to get this going. thanks

• Switching application-wide theme programmatically?

  EDIT: Related question here: Multi theme support in android app I'm attempting to get a user-chosen theme and feel like I'm frustratingly close. Defining the theme in AndroidManifest.xml works as it should, but (as best I can tell) can't change based on app preferences: <application android:theme="@style/theme_sunshine" android:icon="@drawable/icon" android:label="@string/app_name"> Alternatively, setting it dynamically in each activity also works: someChosenTheme = PreferenceManager.getDefaultSharedPreferences(this).getString("themePreference", "theme_twilight"); setTheme(someOtherChosenTheme); But that seems messy, and I'd rather set the theme for the entire app in one place. My first thought was to grab the application context as soon as my main activity launches and do it there: getApplicationContext().setTheme(R.style.theme_dummy); As best I can tell[0], this ought to do the trick, but in fact it's not doing anything--the entire app has the default Android style. Is the above valid, and if so, might I be doing something else dumb? I'm working in API level 3 if that matters. Prods in the right direction greatly appreciated! • Conceptual data modeling: Is RDF the right tool? Other solutions?

  I'm planning a system that combines various data sources and lets users do simple queries on these. A part of the system needs to act as an abstraction layer that knows all connected data sources: the user shouldn't [need to] know about the underlying data "providers". A data provider could be anything: a relational DBMS, a bug tracking system, ..., a weather station. They are hooked up to the query system through a common API that defines how to "offer" data. The type of queries a certain data provider understands is given by its "offer" (e.g. I know these entities, I can give you aggregates of type X for relationship Y, ...). My concern right now is the unification of the data: the various data providers need to agree on a common vocabulary (e.g. the name of the entity "customer" could vary across different systems). Thus, defining a high level representation of the entities and their relationships is required. So far I have the following requirements: I need to be able to define objects and their properties/attributes. Further, arbitrary relations between these objects need to be represented: a verb that defines the nature of the relation (e.g. "knows"), the multiplicity (e.g. 1:n) and the direction/navigability of the relation. It occurs to me that RDF is a viable option, but is it "the right tool" for this job? What other solutions/frameworks do exist for semantic data modeling that have a machine readable representation and why are they better suited for this task? I'm grateful for every opinion and pointer to helpful resources.
