• How to choose a server side language / framework

  I am trying to come up with a list / ranking system on determining which server language to choose for a particular website. Assume that familiarity with a certain language is not important and the implementation can be done in any language. Here are some things that might be important but I am not sure how to rank them : Maintainability. Libraries. For example, Memcached and NoSql support right out the box would be really nice addition to a particular framework. 3rd party SDK's. For example, if I need Paypal on my site they openly provide SDK's for all senarios in Java, PHP and .Net. If I choose Django I would have to rely on 3rd party libraries that are don't support everything and are not officially maintained. Would that be dealbreaker for Django? Performance This one is tricky to put on a generic list because it can be a deal breaker but for many websites performance will not be an issue that the language/framework is responsible for. Cost (hosting, open source). edit - Any reason for the votes to close? I didn't see any duplicates mentioned and the question should not drum up a flame war.

• Can I set up samba so it automatically allows all the local usernames and passwords?

  I have set up samba like this (this is the complete smb.conf): [global] log file = /var/log/samba/log log level = 2 security = user [homes] browsable = false read only = no valid users = %S I'd like to enable every user on server to access their home directories, but for some unknown reason only my 'administrator' account can do so. (I have done that with ftp before, but now smb is also needed). When I try to smbclient -L localhost -U [user], I get NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE, except with the administrator (which is the user created during the ubuntu installation, not root). To me that sounds like as long as the provided username/password is a valid login on the server, it should work. Am I missing something totally obvious? I don't want / can't afford to manually update the samba users and passwords to match the server's. 11.10

• Approach to Authenticate Clients to TCP Server

  I'm writing a Server/Client application where clients will connect to the server. What I want to do, is make sure that the client connecting to the server is actually using my protocol and I can "trust" the data being sent from the client to the server. What I thought about doing is creating a sort of hash on the client's machine that follows a particular algorithm. What I did in a previous version was took their IP address, the client version, and a few other attributes of the client and sent it as a calculated hash to the server, who then took their IP, and the version of the protocol the client claimed to be using, and calculated that number to see if they matched. This works ok until you get clients that connect from within a router environment where their internal IP is different from their external IP. My fix for this was to pass the client's internal IP used to calculate this hash with the authentication protocol. My fear is this approach is not secure enough. Since I'm passing the data used to create the "auth hash". Here's an example of what I'm talking about: Client IP: 192.168.1.10, Version: 2.4.5.2 hash = 2*4*5*1 * (1+9+2) * (1+6+8) * (1) * (1+0) Client Connects to Server client sends: auth hash ip version Server calculates that info, and accepts or denies the hash. Before I go and come up with another algorithm to prove a client can provide data a server (or use this existing algorithm), I was wondering if there are any existing, proven, and secure systems out there for generating a hash that both sides can generate with general knowledge. The server won't know about the client until the very first connection is established. The protocol's intent is to manage a network of clients who will be contributing data to the server periodically. New clients will be added simply by connecting the client to the server and "registering" with the server. So a client connects to the server for the first time, and registers their info (mac address or some other kind of unique computer identifier), then when they connect again, the server will recognize that client as a previous person and associate them with their data in the database.

It means snort start from last few hours of tcpdump file and generate alerts about this section of file and all of packets in first hours are ignored. Another problem in generatin alert is in time stamp of generated alerts. This means when I run snort on a specific day of dataset, snort insert incorrect time stamp for that alert. • Rails3 server and bundler error: uninitialized constant Bundler (NameError)

  I just install rails 3 and all gems that it need, but when I try to start server, it says about problem in boot script. • Logging into StackOverflow.com and Meta.StackOverflow.com

  I have recently created a myopenid to log into stack overflow. This login works on stackoverflow.com but NOT on meta.stackoverflow.com. Why is this? This seems like it is a problem on (meta)stackoverflow's side rather than myopenid's side. When I attempt to login to meta.stackoverflow.com using myopenid login, I end up being redirected to a blank page with a very long query string. The url of the blank page is http://www.myopenid.com/server?... Secondly, my google login does not work. When I attempt to login to stackoverflow.com using my google login I end up seeing a blank page with a url beginning with http://stackoverflow.com/users/authenticate/?s... I am using Firefox 3.6.3 and I can successfully login to stackoverflow.com using myopenid but NOT with myopenid onto meta.stackoverflow.com and NOT with google onto stackoverflow.com. Please note that I would prefer to use my google login to login to stackoverflow. I only created myopenid account to get to the root of the problem. Stackoverflow should seriously consider giving users the option of having stackoverflow specific credentials because for me and I am sure countless others this openid thing don't work. (I know this should be posted in meta.stackoverflow.com but this requires a working openid, which I do not have).

• Modifying my website to allow anonymous comments

  I write the code for my own website as an educational/fun exercise. Right now part of the website is a blog (like every other site out there :-/) which supports the usual basic blog features, including commenting on posts. But I only have comments enabled for logged-in users; I want to alter the code to allow anonymous comments - that is, I want to allow people to post comments without first creating a user account on my site, although there will still be some sort of authentication involved to prevent spam. Question: what information should I save for anonymous comments? I'm thinking at least display name and email address (for displaying a Gravatar), and probably website URL because I eventually want to accept OpenID as well, but would anything else make sense? Other question: how should I modify the database to store this information? The schema I have for the comment table is currently comment_id smallint(5) // The unique comment ID post_id smallint(5) // The ID of the post the comment was made on user_id smallint(5) // The ID of the user account who made the comment comment_subject varchar(128) comment_date timestamp comment_text text Should I add additional fields for name, email address, etc. to the comment table? (seems like a bad idea) Create a new "anonymous users" table? (and if so, how to keep anonymous user ids from conflicting with regular user ids) Or create fake user accounts for anonymous users in my existing users table? Part of what's making this tricky is that if someone tries to post an anonymous comment using an email address (or OpenID) that's already associated with an account on my site, I'd like to catch that and prompt them to log in.

Like: for attribute in kwargs.keys(): if attribute in User: user.__attribute__[attribute] = kwargs[attribute] else: raise Exception("blah") that way I could put this in its own function (unless one hopefully already exists?) So I wouldn't have to do the if ladder again and again, and so I could change the table structure without modifying this code. Any suggestions?

• how to store/model users/faceboook users/linkedin users, etc, with ActiveRecord?

  My app has "normal" users: those which come through a typical signup page facebook(FB) users: those which come from Facebook connect "FB-normal" users: a user that can log with both email/password * FB connect Further, there's the a slew of other openID-ish login methods (I don't think openID itself will be acceptable since it doesn't link up the accounts and allow the 3rd party specific features (posting to twitter, adding a FB post, etc etc)) So, how do I model this? Right now we have User class with #facebook_user? defined -- but it gets messy with the "FB-normal" users - plus all the validations become very tricky and hard to interpret. Also, there are methods like #deliver_password_reset! which make no sense in the context for facebook-only users. (this is lame) I've thought out STI (User::Facebook, User::Normal, User::FBNormal, etc.) This makes validations super slick, but it doesn't scale to other connection types, and all the permutations between them... User::FacebookLinkedInNormal(wtf?) Doing this with a bunch of modules I think would suck a lot. Any other ideas?

This works fine - there are no problems with its functionality. However it feels 'slow' and 'sluggish'. Is there a cleaner/faster way to accomplish this task?   I have installed Ubuntu 11.10. I used a wired connection to download and install all of the updates. When I tried to use a Netgear WNA3100 wireless USB network adapter, it failed. Much searching and trying things I was finally able to get it working by disabling security on my router. I have verified this by disabling security and I was able to connect. When I enabled security (WPA2 PSK), the connection failed. What is necessary to enable security (WPA2 PSK) and still use the Netgear USB interface?   I'm using Samsung NP900X3C. I have problem with occasionally connecting to WIFI, with Ubuntu 12.10. Sometimes my computer could not connect to WIFI "blab", neither after reboot computer. Only solution is to restart WIFI hotspot. It's public WIFI, used by many users, that don't have that problem.   I have a WD MBWE II (White Strip Light) 2TB - (WD20000H2NC-00) Was working fine until a few days ago. I guess there was a power failure and after that I am unable to access the 'Public' or the 'Download' folder anymore. I have been searching for answers everywhere but came up empty handed. Web GUI still works, SSH works. I hooked up both the drives on my PC and UFS Explorer sees the drive. But so far I am unable to retrieve any of my data. I do not remember what RAID setting I used when I first got the drive. I can see from GUI that it is set as "Stripe". The drive contains 10 years of family pictures which I really do not want to loose. Sadly and stupidly, I didn't even keep a backup of this drive. Can somebody please help or point me in the right direction. Thank you in advance for your help. Disk Utility on Ubuntu reports 1405 bad sectors on one drive. How can I retrieve my data? Please help.   I'm extremely new to SOAP and I'm trying to implement a quick test client in PHP that consumes a ASP.NET web service. The web service relies on a Soap Header that contains authorization parameters. Is it possible to send the auth header along with a soap request when using WSDL? • ASP.NET MVC authentication for iPhone application

  This is for an ASP.NET MVC application. For browser based access on my normal controllers, I'm using standard forms authentication and auth cookies. My question is how I do the same for an iPhone application. I have a set of RESTful controllers that the iPhone application uses directly, but I'm not sure how to go about authentication... I was thinking of having a special Login method that returns the auth cookie. Then I can use the standard Authentication attribute on the ASP.NET MVC side, but I'm not sure how to handle this on the iPhone side? Can I store this cookie and have it automatically sent with every request? Perhaps there's a better approach altogether?

I was wondering whether the following are possible using the package: Add help texts beside/below input/select fields and textareas (e.g. "This field is required", "Example: qwerty123") Add/modify attributes for the input/select fields and textareas (e.g. adding the following attributes: class, id, name, maxlength, minlength, etc.) Add custom validations like checking whether a particular field should be unique or checking a value against a regular expression Modify the error messages Add another column to the table generated by the form Also note that djangoforms.ModelForm is different from django.forms.Form.

Any thoughts? I have re installed glassfish and NetBeans but it all seems the same. I think this started happening after I had to force-restart my computer with NetBeans stil open and the app deployed, but it's hard to know for sure if this was the real catalyst. Any thoughts or help is appreciated thanks. Is it an app error? if so why no errors in the log are shown?
