• Should a link validator report 302 redirects as broken links?

  A while ago, sparkfun.com changed their URL structure from /commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 to /products/9266 This is nice, right? We don't need to know that it is (or was) a PHP page, and commerce, product_info, and products_id all tell us that we're looking at some products. The latter form seems like a great improvement. However, the change would have broken existing links. So, nicely, they stuck in 302 redirects. Visit http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 and your browser will issue GET /commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 HTTP/1.1 to which Sparkfun's servers reply HTTP/1.1 302 Found Location: http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9266 This 302 redirect is caught by Stack Exchange's link validator as a broken link. It's not broken it works just fine. Here, try it: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9266 I understand that a 302 redirect is intended to be a temporary redirect, while a 301 should be used for permanent changes per RFC 2616. That said, Wikipedia and common practice use it as a redirect. Who is in error in this situation? Is this an error in Sparkfun's redirect implementation or in Stack Exchange's URL validator?

• Sendmail encrypted

  I manage a website running on Apache. It has public and private areas. When people apply for an account to access the protected portions of the site, they do a TLS/SSL protected POST containing their information which is saved to a (hopefully) nonpublic directory on the server. Then I have a python script which takes URL Encoded POSTS with this user information, sends back a plaintext confirmation to the applicant, encrypts their information with a freeware java command-line utility to protect it (specifically this one: http://spi.dod.mil/ewizard.htm), base64 encodes them, puts them in a file as a mime attachment and uses sendmail to forward the file information to my (and several coworkers' scattered around the country) email account(s) on an Exchange server with Outlook clients. This has worked well for years, but is awkward because it involves manually decrypting the information on a windows box once it is received, using the above mentioned encryption utility. This significantly limits how many can be processed. I would like to be able to encrypt my information in a format that Outlook/Exchange can inherently understand and display so that these emails can be viewed simply by clicking on them. I do have company provided PKI public certs for all the people I need to send to, and am able to send/receive encrypted emails on Outlook manually, but would like to know how I can send to Outlook from apache/linux/python from the command line using the same PKI certs. Dont need to receive them, just send. Is there a utility that can do this? I had thought pgp might but I havent been able to figure it out.

• Wiki Application With A Reputation System

  I'm really impressed with Stack Exchange's concept of reputation (you gain reputation as you post, and the more you post, the more privileges you get), and I want to apply the concept to a wiki that I am building. Does anyone know of a php wiki that has a concept of privileges/reputation similar to Stack Exchange? I'm not necessarily looking for something identical to SE, I'm just looking for a wiki application that gives users more privileges the more they contribute positively to the wiki (SE has down votes, the wiki should have some way of identifying negative contributions too). The privileges should be category based, so the more active you are in a specific category or page, the more privileges you get for that category. There should also be site wide privileges as well, though those should be harder to access than the category privileges. NOTE: If it is not possible to get category wide privileges and site wide privileges, I will be OK with just category wide privileges or just site wide privileges. I should be able to change the requirements for each privilege, through a administration panel or through editing a file (some wiki applications don't have administration interfaces). Does anyone have a script or a solution that will do this? If the script uses something similar to reputation to determine how much a user has positively contributed to the site, then that is OK too. Please Note: I am looking for a way to rate individual user contributions, not a way to rate the quality of an entire page.

• How do you compare job offers from companies in different countries?

  This isn't really a programmer-specific question, but I'm not sure of a more appropriate place, and I think the users of this site are best able to answer the question in the context of programmers. Relocating to the US seems fairly common in the programming industry. I live in the UK, and maybe one day, I might do it too. So, if that day comes - how would you go about comparing job offers? Benefits are fairly easy to compare, but given the differences in cost of living, how would you go about comparing salaries and the quality of living you'll have? In a country where the cost of living is lower, you might be able to accept a lower salary (based on exchange rate) and still have the same quality of living. But what can you do to ensure this? In some cases, you may even take a "pay rise" in terms of exchange rate, but end up far worse off. How can you compare job offers across different countries to get an idea of the salary you would need in order to not feel you've gone "backwards"?

• Would it be possible to create an open source software library, entirely developed and moderated by an open community?

  Call it democratic software development, or open source on steroids if you will. I'm not just talking about the possibility of providing a patch which can be approved by the library owner. Think more along the lines of how Stack Exchange works. Anyone can post code, and through community moderation it is cleaned up and eventually valid code ends up in the final library. For complex libraries an elaborate system should probably be created, but for a simple library it is my belief this is already possible even within the Stack Exchange platform. Take a library of extension methods for .NET for example. Everybody goes their own way and implements their own subset of what they feel is important, open-source library or not. People want to share their code, but there is no suitable platform for it. extensionmethod.net is the result of answering this call for extension methods, but the framework hopelessly falls short; there is no order, or structure at all. You don't know whether an idea is any good until you try it, so I decided to create an Extension Methods proposal on Area51. I belief with proper moderation, it could be possible for the site to be more than a Q&A site, and that an actual library (or subsets of it) could be extracted from it. Has anything like this been attempted before? Are there platforms better suited for this?

• Creating, using and managing XML component dictionaries quick tutorials

  XML Component Dictionary capabilities are provided in conjunction with the CAM Editor toolset.  These dictionaries accelerate the development of consistent XML information exchanges using standard sets of dictionary components. The quick tutorials are aimed at showing the 'how to' of the basic capabilities to jump start use of XML dictionaries with the CAM Editor. The collection of dictionary tutorials videos run for a total of approximately 20 minutes.  Each video can be reviewed individually also. Learn how to use the dictionary functions to create dictionaries by harvesting data model components from existing XSD schema, SQL database table schema, or simple Excel / Open Office spreadsheets with tables of components listed.Also included are tips and functions relating to use of NIEM exchange development, IEPD and EIEM techniques.These videos should be viewed in conjunction with reviewing the overall concepts and techniques described in the companion video on the CAM Editor and Dictionaries overview.  The approach is aligned with OASIS and Core Components Technical Specification (CCTS) standards specifications for XML components and dictionaries.Dictionary collections can be stored locally on the file system, or local network, or collaboratively on the web or cloud deployment, or can be shared and managed securely using the Oracle Enterprise Repository (OER) tool. • What is the best book for the preparation of MCPD Exam 70-564 (Designing and Developing ASP.NET 3.5 Applications)?

  Hi all, I have seen a couple of questions like this one and scanned through the answers but somehow the replies were not satisfactory or practical. So i wondered maybe people who have gone through it and may suggest a better approach for the preparation of this exam. Goal: My goal is actually NOT merely to pass that exam. I intend to actually master the skill. I have been into asp.net web development for approximately 1.5 years and I want to study something that really improves "Design and Development Skills" in Web Development in general and asp.net to be specific which i can put to use and build upon that. Please suggest a book that teaches professional Asp.Net design and development skills and approaches to quality development by taking through practice design scenarios and their solutions and through various case studies that involve design problems and their implemented solutions. Edit: I have found the Micorosoft training kits to be fairly interesting and helpful as these tend to increase knowledge. I have utilized a lot of things after getting a good explanation of things from the training kits. However, as far as Microsoft Training Kit for 70-564 is concerned, there are not a lot of good reviews about it. What i have read and searched on the net , the reviews on amazon and various forums, stack-exchange and experts-exchange, were more inclined to the conclusion that "Microsoft Training Kit for Exam 70-564 is not good. Its is not good as compared to other kits from Microsoft, like as compared to the training kit of Exam 70-562 or others." So i was looking for a proper book containing examples from practical world scenarios and case studies from which i can not only learn but also master the skills before wasting money of Microsoft Training Kit for Exam 70-564. Waiting for experts to provide a suitable advice.

• Domain model integration using JSON capable DTOs

  I'm a bit confused about architectural choices for the java/web-applications world. The background is I have a system with certain hardware components (that introduce system immanent active behavior) and a configuration database for system meta and HW-components configuration data (these are even usually self contained, since the HW-components persist configuration data anyway). For realization of the configuration/status data exchange protocol with the HW-components we have chosen the Google Protobuf format, which works well for the directly wired communication with these components. Now we want to develop an abstract model (domain model) for those HW-components and I have the feeling that a plain Java class model would fit best for this (c++ implementation seems to have too much implementation/integration overhead with viable language-bridge interfaces). Google Protobuf message definitions could still serve well to describe DTO objects used to interact with a domain model API. But integrating Google Protobuf messages client side for e.g. data binding in the current view doesn't seem to be a good choice. I'm thinking about some extra serialization features, e.g. for JSON based data exchange with the views/controllers. Most lightweight solutions seem to involve a python based presentation layer using JSON based data transfer (I'm at least not sure to be fully informed about this). Is there some lightweight (applicable for a limited ARM Linux platform) framework available, supporting such architecture to realize a web-application?

• What constitutes "commercial purposes"?

  I'm looking at this license. It says that I can use it for "non-commercial purposes". What does that mean? I see in Stack Exchange, under Network Profile there is that graph that tracks your points across your Stack Exchange accounts. It uses a control called HighCharts which have a paid and Creative Commons licensed version. So would Stack Overflow constitute a commercial site? We don't pay to use this site, but obviously the site makes money from ads, etc. Then again, there's a lot of sites that have ads who won't necessarily make a profit, it may only be subsiding their costs. But even then, you could argue that even if it is only subsiding their costs, a lot of IT companies run at a loss in order to build a big enough customer base. So where is the line here? Is it any website on the internet? Is it any website that has ads? Is it any website that turns over a profit?

• Why won't jqGrid won't populate initially in Chrome

  Hi, I've got a web page with a jqGrid that uses am xmlreader to populate itself with data that is spat out by a RoR service. The page loads fine in firefox and safari. In Chrome however I get a blank grid. • Xobni Free Powers Up Outlook’s Search and Contacts

  Want to find out more about your contacts, discover email trends, and even sync Yahoo! email accounts in Outlook?  Here’s how you can do this and more with Xobni Free. Email is one of the most important communications mediums today, but even with all of the advances in Outlook over the years it can still be difficult to keep track of conversations, files, and contacts.  Xobni makes it easy by indexing your emails and organizing them by sender.  You can use its powerful search to quickly find any email, find related messages, and then view more information about that contact with information from social networks.  And, to top it off, it even lets you view your Yahoo! emails directly in Outlook without upgrading to a Yahoo! Plus account.  Xobni runs in Outlook 2003, 2007, and 2010, including the 64 bit version of Outlook 2010, and users of older versions will especially enjoy the new features Xobni brings for free. Getting started Download the Xobni Free installer (link below), and run to start the installation.  Make sure to exit Outlook before installing.  Xobni may need to download additional files which may take a few moments. When the download is finished, proceed with the install as normal.  You can opt out of the Product Improvement Program at the end of the installation by unchecking the box.  Additionally, you are asked to share Xobni with your friends on social networks, but this is not required.   Next time you open Outlook, you’ll notice the new Xobni sidebar in Outlook.  You can choose to watch an introduction video that will help you quickly get up to speed on how Xobni works. Xobni can also show you all scheduled appointments and links exchanged with a contact, but this is only available in the Plus version.  If you’d rather not see the tab for a feature you can’t use, click Don’t show this tab to banish it from Xobni for good.   Searching emails from the Xobni toolbar is very fast, and you can preview a message by simply hovering over it from the search pane. Get More Information About Your Contacts Xobni’s coolest feature is its social integration.  Whenever you select an email, you may see a brief bio, picture, and more, all pulled from social networks.   Select one of the tabs to find more information.  You may need to login to view information on your contacts from certain networks. The Twitter tab lets you see recent tweets.  Xobni will search for related Twitter accounts, and will ask you to confirm if the choice is correct.   Now you can see this contact’s recent Tweets directly from Outlook.   The Hoovers tab can give you interesting information about the businesses you’re in contact with. If the information isn’t correct, you can edit it and add your own information.  Click the Edit button, and the add any information you want.   You can also remove a network you don’t wish to see.  Right-click on the network tabs, select Manage Extensions, and uncheck any you don’t want to see. But sometimes online contact just doesn’t cut it.  For these times, click on the orange folder button to request a contact’s phone number or schedule a time with them. This will open a new email message ready to send with the information you want.  Edit as you please, and send. Add Yahoo! Email to Outlook for Free One of Xobni’s neatest features is that it let’s you add your Yahoo! email account to Outlook for free.  Click the gear icon in the bottom of the Xobni sidebar and select Options to set it up. Select the Integration tab, and click Enable to add Yahoo! mail to Xobni. Sign in with your Yahoo! account, and make sure to check the Keep me signed in box. Note that you may have to re-signin every two weeks to keep your Yahoo! account connected.  Select I agree to finish setting it up. Xobni will now download and index your recent Yahoo! mail. Your Yahoo! messages will only show up in the Xobni sidebar.  Whenever you select a contact, you will see related messages from your Yahoo! account as well.  Or, you can search from the sidebar to find individual messages from your Yahoo! account.  Note the Y! logo beside Yahoo! messages.   Select a message to read it in the Sidebar.  You can open the email in Yahoo! in your browser, or can reply to it using your default Outlook email account. If you have many older messages in your Yahoo! account, make sure to go back to the Integration tab and select Index Yahoo! Mail to index all of your emails. • SharePoint 2010 Replaceable Parameter, some observations…

  SharePoint Tools for Visual Studio 2010 provides a rudimentary mechanism for replaceable parameters that you can use in files that are not compiled, like ascx files and your project property settings. The basics on this can be found in the documentation at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee231545.aspx. There are some quirks however. For example: My Package name is MacawMastSP2010Templates, as defined in my Package properties: I want to use the $SharePoint.Package.Name$ replaceable parameter in my feature properties. But this parameter does not work in the “Deployment Path” property, while other parameters work there, while it works in the “Image Url” property. It just does not get expanded. So I had to resort to explicitly naming the first path of the deployment path: : You also see a special property for the “Receiver Class” in the format $SharePoint.Type.<GUID>.FullName$. The documentation gives the following description:The full name of the type matching the GUID in the token. The format of the GUID is lowercase and corresponds to the Guid.ToString(“D”) format (that is, xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx). Not very clear. After some searching it happened to be the guid as declared in my feature receiver code: In other properties you see a different set of replaceable parameters: We use a similar mechanism for replaceable parameter for years in our Macaw Solutions Factory for SharePoint 2007 development, where each replaceable parameter is a PowerShell function. This provides so much more power. I think I will bring back this mechanism, so it can work together with the built-in replaceable parameters, there are hooks to define you custom replacements as described by Waldek in this blog post.

• Cisco Unifed Communication integration for Microsoft Lync crashes on Remote Desktop services 2008 R2!

• Cisco Unified Communication integration for Microsoft Lync crashes on Remote Desktop services 2008 R2!

  Hi everybody i have deployed office communication server 2007 R2 and communicator 2007 R2 and i made integration with Cisco Unified Communication Manager 7.1 in my network, i also use Remote Desktop Servers 2008 R2 for Thin Client Computers, now that i installed Cisco UC integration client for communicator 2007 R2 (Ver. 8.0.3) or Cisco UC integration client for Microsoft Lync that works fine on PCs but Not on Remote Desktop Servers. i have Three Remote Desktop Servers in a Farm with loadbalancing enabled. all other applications on these RDP servers works fine for 120 active users. some times when i start Cisco UC client on Remote Desktop servers i get the following error: "The Port Reguired for callbacks from Cisco unified client framework could not be read, please retry" i also found the folowing log so i think that may be the cause: 2011-01-05 08:24:21,489 [INFO ] [com.cisco.uc.ucsf.ProblemReportingTool.controller.SingleInstanceManager] [SingleInstanceManager.acquireMutex(0)] -   Microsoft Lync Server 2010 communications software and its client software, such as Microsoft Lync 2010, enable your users to connect in new ways and to stay connected, regardless of their physical location. Lync 2010 and Lync Server 2010 bring together the different ways that people communicate in a single client interface, are deployed as a unified platform, and are administered through a single management infrastructure. Workload Description IM and presence Instant messaging (IM) and presence help your users find and communicate with one another efficiently and effectively. IM provides an instant messaging platform with conversation history, and supports public IM connectivity with users of public IM networks such as MSN/Windows Live, Yahoo!, and AOL. Presence establishes and displays a user’s personal availability and willingness to communicate through the use of common states such as Available or Busy. This rich presence information enables other users to immediately make effective communication choices. Conferencing Lync Server includes support for IM conferencing, audio conferencing, web conferencing, video conferencing, and application sharing, for both scheduled and impromptu meetings. All these meeting types are supported with a single client. Lync Server also supports dial-in conferencing so that users of public switched telephone network (PSTN) phones can participate in the audio portion of conferences. Conferences can seamlessly change and grow in real time. For example, a single conference can start as just instant messages between a few users, and escalate to an audio conference with desktop sharing and a larger audience instantly, easily, and without interrupting the conversation flow. Enterprise Voice Enterprise Voice is the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) offering in Lync Server 2010. It delivers a voice option to enhance or replace traditional private branch exchange (PBX) systems. In addition to the complete telephony capabilities of an IP PBX, Enterprise Voice is integrated with rich presence, IM, collaboration, and meetings. Features such as call answer, hold, resume, transfer, forward and divert are supported directly, while personalized speed dialing keys are replaced by Contacts lists, and automatic intercom is replaced with IM. Enterprise Voice supports high availability through call admission control (CAC), branch office survivability, and extended options for data resiliency. Support for remote users You can provide full Lync Server functionality for users who are currently outside your organization’s firewalls by deploying servers called Edge Servers to provide a connection for these remote users. These remote users can connect to conferences by using a personal computer with Lync 2010 installed, the phone, or a web interface. Deploying Edge Servers also enables you to federate with partner or vendor organizations. A federated relationship enables your users to put federated users on their Contacts lists, exchange presence information and instant messages with these users, and invite them to audio calls, video calls, and conferences. Integration with other products Lync Server integrates with several other products to provide additional benefits to your users and administrators. Meeting tools are integrated into Outlook 2010 to enable organizers to schedule a meeting or start an impromptu conference with a single click and make it just as easy for attendees to join. Presence information is integrated into Outlook 2010 and SharePoint 2010. Exchange Unified Messaging (UM) provides several integration features. Lync Server 2010, Planning Tool is a wizard that interactively asks you a series of questions about your organization, the Lync Server features you want to enable, and your capacity planning needs. Then, it creates a recommended deployment topology based on your answers, and produces several forms of output to aid your planning and installation. Topology Builder is an installation component of Lync Server 2010. You use Topology Builder to create, adjust and publish your planned topology.   The sys.dm_os_waiting_tasks DMV contains a wealth of useful information about tasks waiting on a resource, but until now detailed information about the resource being consumed - sys.dm_os_waiting_tasks.resource_description - hasn't been documented, apart from a rather self-evident "Description of the resource that is being consumed."   Thanks to a recent Connect suggestion this column will get more information added. • Rails paginate existing array of ActiveRecord results

  Hello, I generally use will_paginate for the pagination in my app, but have hit a stumbler on my search feature. I'm using Thinking Sphinx for doing my full-text search, which returns results paginated. The problem I'm having is that after I've received the results from Thinking Sphinx, I need to merge them with some other results and re-order them. Once I've finished processing them I have an Array of results that is very different from the original from TS. As there could be 1000+ results in this Array Pagination is a necessity. The problem is that I can't figure out how to get will_paginate to play with an existing array. I've done some research and it seems the only solutions to this problem are from several years ago and are based around the old built-in Paginator class. The most recent one I could find that makes use of will_paginate was from devchix from mid-2007: http://www.devchix.com/2007/07/23/will_paginate-array/comment-page-1/ - I've given this a go but it doesn't seem to do anything for me. Are there any current methods for applying pagination (preferably via will_paginate) for existing arrays of AR results?
