  What is a good approach to an anti-spam algorithm for a website similar to reddit? Their anti-spam algorithm seems awfully broken (banning on words in the title and doing a horrible job for that matter). Considering a post spam because it has the word 'spam' in the title is really not a wise choice. Anyway, how can one approach such problem ? Are there any tools that help in such cases? Also, what are the /technical/ reasons behind reddit's choice not using reCAPTCHA on every post submission? It seems like a much better solution than what they have right now. Since reddit is basically a community-driven website why not give such power to the communities' trusted members?

• Developing a search algorithm

  I want to create a basic search engine, and I want you to give me some ideas how to filter out the best results for my visitors. I have three fields regarding a product the user can search in: Title Category Description I came up with these ideas and I ask you to either competently criticize them or add to them. If the search term occurs in all three fields it should be among the first results. If it is in two of the fields it is below the results of 1. Combine the amount of occurences and output a value in per cent. For instance if in all fields together the term clock appeared 50 times and in all fields together there are 200 words, then the per cent value is 50/200*100 = 25%. Another product entry amounts to say 20% so product one having 25% is listed before product two having 20%.

  So I have created a video website which has thousands of videos and thousands of videos get added to it on a daily basis. Here is my problem :- I have created a website which basically loads the skeleton in html and puts all the content through javascript and Ajax. The problem is search engines aren't going anywhere except for the home page. Is there a way say in robots.txt where i give a link to a single html which has links to all these videos ? I agree my site is not accessible for a non-javascript user but stats show that this ratio is very low ( 0.2 % ). Is there a way I can still keep the complete AJAX website and still get each individual videos listed on google ?

  I just installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my hp pavilion dv6 everything works except the sound. The sound comes from headphones and speakers. I use a normal jack-stick headphone. I want the sound to come only from headphones when my headphone is attached. My ID codec: IDT 92HD75B3X5 Again all what i want is: The sound should not come from the speakers when my headphone is attached :D. I read this question but it didn't answer my problem: Sound comes out of my speakers even when headphones are plugged in I am totally new to Ubuntu so please give step by step instructions.

• Unity 3D in 11.10 with VirtualBox in OS X?

  I'm having a horrible time with Unity 3D in Ubuntu 11.10 running in a VirtualBox VM in OS X. Such a hard time, in fact, that I'm about to give up and conclude that it simply isn't possible to use Ubuntu 3D in a configuration like this. The problem with is that windows simply do not render. I've found that killing Nautilus makes the problem go away, but that's really not much of a solution. I have installed the guest additions and am running the VM with 2048 MB RAM, 128 MB video memory, and have enabled 3D acceleration. I've tried all this on several Macintoshes, with no luck. Unity 2D, on the other hand, works fine across the board. Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated.

  I intend to use google analyticts, and as I understand it I will need to offer users the option to opt out of cookies. The question is this: I HATE these constant cookie option boxes, everyone I ask it getting annoyed by them too. Its nice to have the option, but we all know they have been in use for well over a decade. So - how big of a deal do I have to make about the fact that I'm using GoogleAn? can I pop a small link at the bottom of the page, maybe integrate it into "Privacy policies" page, and give people the option to opt out there? This would be very much the "Assume the majority of users don't mind, but at least make the option available" stance. Ironically setting a cookie seems to be the only way I can see to enforce the opt-out! as IP's change.

• The network printer will only print blank pages and will not stop. What should I do?

  I work in a library, so we have a Ricoh printer that is networked between all of us. I just recently installed Ubuntu 11.10 64bit on my desktop and have been trying to set up the printer without success. Ubuntu found the printer immediately and allowed me to set it up. When I hit test print, I get one sheet with writing on it and then it prints blank pages and will not stop until I turn off the printer. I tried printing from a document and I get the same one page with writing and then all the blank pages again. Below is what the page says with writing on it. The project you are working doesn't involve having features that would make it easy to choose between the two technologies (e.g. .NET has this that I need and Java does not) and both of them should work just fine for you (though you only need one of course). Take into account: Performance Tools available (even 3rd party tools) Cross platform compatibility Libraries (especially 3rd party libraries) Cost (Oracle seems to try and monetize Java) Development process (Easiest/Fastest) Also keep in mind that Linux is not your main platform but you would like to port your project to Linux/MacOs as well. You should definitely keep in mind the trouble that has been revolving around Oracle and the Java community and the limitations of Mono and Java as well. It would be much appreciated if people with experience in both can give an overview and their own subjective view about which they would choose and why.

• How to delete Analytics property from list in Webmaster Tools?

  When I look at the Google Analytics Property page in Webmaster Tools (where you associate a Google Analytics web property with a Webmaster Tools site), I see a list of a bunch of properties with weird names. They are test properties from when we were trying things out years ago. I can't view them or change their name in Analytics because they don't exist there. All their profiles were deleted years ago. Is there a way to remove these from the list in Webmaster Tools? Or, alternatively, a way to view them again in Analytics so I can give them a better name, at least. I know this doesn't matter in the big scheme of things, but I hate clutter.

The UI is going to hide this, this is for programmatic web service access only (which the "UI's JS will have to call).

• Unity, Unrealistic Sphere On Inclined Plane

  So I am trying to model a ball rolling down an inclined surface in Unity based on what I am observing in real life but it is still quite off. In Unity it takes the ball about 3 seconds to travel from a place to another specified place where in real life it only takes 1 second. The ball isn't as fast to react to the incline as in real life (even though I have tried giving the ball and surface low or zero friction values) The ball does not accelerate as nearly as fast as it does in real life What do I do to give the ball more realistic behavior ? I have tried messing around with mass, physics materials, drag, and angular drag on the ball and surface but it doesn't seem to be helping.

  I have my Java environment installed alongside Eclipse, and I was successfully able to create and run a new project (simple System.out.println("Yay I work!"); I have the OpenGL SuperBible, and I primarily want to code 3D things (I'll take my time using the book to learn how to draw shapes in 3D space, etc..) Can you help me get setup with OpenGL in Java? I dont really need LWJGL, although I WILL make games eventually. I just can't even figure out with all of these terrible (and old) tutorials floating around on the net how to install either JOGL or LWJGL. If you can give me a hand with that, I'd appreciate it.   I am downgrading an existing ubuntu 10.04 LTS Virtual Server to one with less memory and a smaller drive ( from 80GB to 40GB ). My hoster ( hetzner.de ) does not give me the possibility of doing an inplace downgrade, so I have to create a new server. What is the best way to make an image of the first system and "apply it" to the new one ? I know there other answer but in my situation I am not sure I would be able to use Clonezilla or other GUI tools, because the installation is minimal with no GUI. Thanks in advance Michele

My laptop cooler always cools the laptop, which means that nvidia card is consuming power in the background. (Terminal sometimes says something daemon-server is not running.) Can you give me some solution for this?

• Ubuntu 14.04 not booting before Windows 8.1

  I try too boot my computer into Ubuntu, but I end up having to manually select Ubuntu from the devices menu, even though it was supposed to boot first. Instead Windows 8 boots up like Ubuntu isn't even there! And GRUB works just fine when Ubuntu is selected in the boot device menu. (How else am I on?) I tried using EasyBCD but kept getting errors from the windows boot manager. And just in case it helps, during installation of Ubuntu it didn't recognize windows 8, and I had to resize and install manually. Anything I can do? Notes: EVERYONE!!! GRUB WORKS PERFECTLY!!! IT IS AN ERROR IN THE HP BOOT MENU AS I HAVE PREVIOUSLY SAID!!! PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ME ANSWERS FOR GRUB EDITS IN THE FUTURE!!! The first method i found is update-rc.d to add new services to startup, which aims on the /etc/init.d folder and it's contents. The other one i found is the way to edit .conf the files in /etc/init folder. What's the recommended way to enable / disable / add services and why?
