• Good ACL implementation in Java

  Hi All. I'm implementing a web based document management system and I'd like to implement ACLs in my system. My formal requirements are hierarchal permissions (documents inherit permissions from their folders) user groups (users can dynamically create groups and associate users with groups). Such groups can have permissions on objects in the system. My code will query permission on objects in two cases: 1. Manipulating a single document 2. Listing all documents where a manipulation is possible The latter requirement seems the achilles heel for Spring Security ACLs (their method seems likely to incur multiple DB hits for each document I manage) Anyone know of another ACL implementation? • Using App Engine to update a database in a app

  I have been reading about app engine but I still dont know what I can and cant do with it in a android application. Basically what I want to do is be able to create/manage a database in the cloud that the app can pull down and update the local database if needed. Creation and managing would be done outside of the app by me. I dont know much about all of this as I am just getting started with it but I already have an application made, I just want to add this feature to it. I have never written any sort of Web Service calls or anything either but I have used them to get data and such Can this be done? Any tutorials out there to help me out?

  symfony has released some of their components free to use outside the framework. i have used the event dispatcher and dependency injection...they are awesome! i wonder if there are other components/libraries (from other frameworks etc) that in the same way help you manage various design patterns? eg. decorator, facade, singleton, chain of commands etc. i think symfony is on the right path, abstracting away the design patterns. are there any other components out there doing the same? thanks

• Why doesn't the C++ default destructor destroy my objects?

  The C++ specification says the default destructor deletes all non-static members. Nevertheless, I can't manage to achieve that.   I want to have a twisted service (started via twistd) which listens to TCP/POST request on a specified port on a specified IP address. By now I have a twisted application which listens to port 8040 on localhost. It is running fine, but I want it to only listen to a certain IP address, say 10.0.0.78. How-to manage that? • PHP: Iterate through folders and display HTML contends

  Hi, I’m currently trying to develop a method to get a overview of all my different web templates I’ve created and (legally) downloaded over the years. I thought about a displaying them like Wordpress is previewing it’s templates view a small preview windows, displaying the concrete file with styles and everything. How to divide them into rows and columns and create AJAX modal window open on preview and pagination and so on I believe I can manage, but it is the concept itself about iterate over several folders then find all index.htm / index.html pages and displaying them. I’ve not worked very much with directories in PHP and the only references and code stumps I’ve found so far is just to list all the files in a certain directory like, what it contains. I would be really grateful if someone knew about a script, a function, snippet or just could get me a nudge in the right direction to create such a (probably simple) preview function.   My question is quite simple : To use a custom menu for the apps icon on the dock, - (NSMenu*) applicationDockMenu: (id) sender; of the NSApplicationDelegate has to return the menu that the dock will display. Using setImage on a NSMenuItem, you can normaly add icons to the menu. They show up on the normal menu, but not on in contextual menu of the app's dock icon. Then how did Apple manage QuickTime, XCode, Preview to show icons in the list of recent opened files accessible in their dock contextual menu ? Thx.

• Reading a file over a network path

  I have this weird issue,when I use > File FileToRead = new File("\\\\MYSERVER\\MYFOLDER\\MYFOLDER\\MYPICTURE.JPG"); to read a file over a network,all I get is a null pointer exception.Normally a local path works with this,but when on a network path,I just couldn't manage to get it to work.Any ideas? PS:oh and my network connection seems to work,no issues when accessing data in windows explorer...   Hi, I have a problem that I didn't manage to solve for a very long time, and I quite desperate. I have a Database (SQL Server) with table named 'ProcessData' and columns named 'Process_Name' (Data Type: nvarchar(50)), 'Start_At' (DataType: DateTime) and 'End_At' (Data Type: DateTime). I need to know for each 'Time-Interval' (let's say 1 minute) how many processes (Process_Name = PN) was open (after or equal to the 'Start_at' column and before or equal to the 'End_At' column) during this time (It can be a few rows with the same data). Does anyone know how to make this query without a 'for' loop? (It ITSELF will promote the time), (The answer will be a table with two columns (1. The time the check took place. 2. the number of open processes at this time.) and a row for each 'Time-Interval' (1 minute in this example ) Many thanks,

• How to tell which port a USB device is plugged into?

  My c# app must manage multiple USB devices which are the identical product from the same manufacturer. If the user plugs 3 of my devices in, and then unplugs one of them, I need to know which of the 3 devices was unplugged. However, when I register the devices and receive the WM_DEVICECHANGE notifications, the data returned from the DBT_DEVTYP_DEVICEINTERFACE is identical for each of the devices. If I could get the USB port info when the devices arrive or are removed it would solve my problem, but I can't find a way to do this. Any suggestions?

  Hi there, I am looking to add some dynamics to our corporate website. This is a secondary role so I'd rather not be spending a ton of time on it. At this point, all I need is a simple PHP script where a non-technical user can pull up and manage the records in a MySQL table. There's only one table of data to be managed; it's just that it will be accessed and updated quite frequently. I recall that Grails' default scaffolding feature has precisely this: list of entries with the ability to add, edit and delete, with no nonsense. What would be the best tool to use for this? I would rather not be writing it from scratch, as this will take me quite some time. It seems like the kind of thing that ought to exist somewhere. Thanks!

• Deleted nib still displayed when controller is pushed

  I have an application with a UINavcontroller under a tab bar controller. To create the navigation model I want, I push a container UIView object onto the stack to manage additional views(Thanks Frank). When I created the container class, an associated nib file was created along with it. I at first used that nib file, but it turned out it was better not to. So I deleted the nib (and selected 'also move to trash'). The problem is that it still shows up when I push its view controller onto the stack. I have tried emptying the cache in xcode and restarting xcode. What am I missing?

I want to store the passwords hashed, so I overridded the save method in my User model: public function save(Doctrine_Connection $conn = null) { $this->setUserPassword( md5($this->getUserPassword()) ); return parent::save($conn); } This works good when a new user created. However, this causes problems when we edit a user without changing his password. This causes Doctrine to hash the already hashed password. So, I need to check that whether the UserPassword is modified in this DoctrineRecord instance. How can I manage to do that?

  Hi, I have two problems in emacs. First. How do I set-justification-full for the whole document? I can do M-X set-justification-full for a region successfully, but I would like to make it work in the whole document. Second. How do I manage not to get lines jumping from one place to another when I have done set-justification-full, and press enter?   On a given server, I have a set of daemons each of which has its own configuration file. I would like to use git to manage the configuration files editing during time and always have the option to rollback to the "factory defaults" in regards to all files or a specific one. For instance, given the following structure: $ ls -l total 0 -rw-r--r-- 1 tzury tzury 0 2011-01-05 06:36 bar.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 tzury tzury 0 2011-01-05 06:36 baz.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 tzury tzury 0 2011-01-05 06:36 foo.conf Assuming all those .conf files are stored in a git repository, I want to be able to restore all files into their original shape (that would be the first git commit). • IIS version control with Mac clients

  We are in a unique situation here at work. Most of our websites are on an IIS server, but our developers are on Macs. We need some kind of way to do version control of our websites, but want to manage them locally on our Macs. Is there any way to do this, short of Powershell? Most of our websites are in PHP, so we don't want a solution that is geared toward ASP.NET. Also, I'm not clear if there is a way to use Subversion with IIS. Can someone help me out?

• How to deploy updates to .NET website in cluster

  We are operating a corporate web application on a load-balanced cluster that consists of two identical IIS servers talking to a single MSSQL database. To deploy updates I am using this primitive process: 1) Make a copy of the entire site folder (wwwroot\inetpub\whatever) on each IIS box 2) Download the updated, compiled files onto each IIS box from our development area 3) Shut down IIS both web servers 4) Copy the new and updated files into the wwwroot folder (overwriting any same files) 5) Then restart IIS on both machines When there are database changes involved there are a few other steps. The whole process is fairly quick but it is ugly and fraught with danger, so it has to be done with full concentration. I would like to just push one button to make it all happen. And I want a one-click rollback in case there is a problem (that's the reason I make the copy in step #1). I am looking for tools to manage and improve this process. If it also helped us maintain a changelog, that would be nice. Thanks.

• SVN access/security concern

  I'm considering using a third party hosting company to house an SVN repository. (I'm looking at Dreamhost but this may apply to other hosts as well.) The hosting company sets up the repository at http://svn.yourdomain.com/path. The problem I have noticed is that anyone could come along and export the files using: svn export http://svn.yourdomain.com/path Obviously I will need to export the files myself, but is there a way to secure this on a shared host so others don't have the ability to export this over http? Or is the real solution to manage your own SVN server? Thanks for your thoughts.

• How do you manually insert options into boost.Program_options?

  I have an application that uses Boost.Program_options to store and manage its configuration options. We are currently moving away from configuration files and using database loaded configuration instead. I've written an API that reads configuration options from the database by hostname and instance name. (cool!) However, as far as I can see there is no way to manually insert these options into the boost Program_options. Has anyone used this before, any ideas? The docs from boost seem to indicate the only way to get stuff in that map is by the store function, which either reads from the command line or config file (not what I want). Basically looking for a way to manually insert the DB read values in to the map.

• How to correctly migrate urls from custom asp.net solution to Wordpress?

  I have a web site built using asp.net with ugly URLs like /DisplayContent.aspx?id=789564. I know how to migrate the database, but the Wordpress urls will be (naturally) different. Can I simply write some mapping or do I have to include a rewrite rule for each subpage (300 pages) in .htaccess? Should I provide a rewrite rule for each existing page that would transform a full old url to the known new url, like for example: /DisplayContent.aspx?id=789798 -> /2010-5-10/Title-Of-The-Post Even if I manage to migrate the URLs, the structure of the HTML for the new content will naturally be different. How does this affect SEO? Should I run asp.net and wordpress side by side and issue the redirects from the asp.net application? What is the most efficient solution to this kind of migration of URLs without doing PHP programming?

  Hey, I'm a relative newbie to programming. I've picked up some very basic Java (File I/O, GUIs, inheritance) and would like to take a look at functional programming - in particular, I would like to learn Scheme. I'm having some trouble finding a Scheme implementation I can understand. Interpreters are weird; I'm not sure how to save my programs and create executables. I've downloaded PLT Scheme, but I would prefer using something less condescending, something similar to NetBeans. Is there a plugin or tool that will allow me to quickly and easily create and manage Scheme programs? All help is appreciated!

  I have a "Movies" and a "Actors" table and "Casts" as join-model. To be more specific "Casts" has movie_id, actor_id and rolename. I want in "Movies" form to add a live search to search through actors and a "rolename" text_field and save those to "Casts". I don't know if text_field_with_auto_complete is the right choice but i prefer not to use much javascript because i am not familiar with it. I've been searching all over the internet to find something similar to this without any result. I've manage to get it working with "@actors.each do" but it makes a very long list.

  Hi, in my app I use several png-graphics. For the present version they are installed with the app in the folder "graphic". I made while programming. Now I need some more png-graphics and I don't want to make each time an app-update. How can I manage it, that the app is downloading the png-files from my webserver without knowing the name. I am looking for something which compares the files on the webserver with the files on the iPhone and if there is a new (or newer) file download it. Or is it possible to make an plist-file with the graphics??

• Singelton restricted to instance of dll

  If I create a singleton class in the context of a dll, the singleton class is instantiated once and used by all instances of the dll. I am using a dll as a plug-in for an application. Now the following thing came to my mind: If I use a singleton Class, it will be shared across multiple instances of the plug-in. However, this makes it difficult to manage the lifetime of the singleton class efficiently. The only way I could think of would be to use a reference count and to make the singleton delete its self when the reference count is 0. Does anyone have any better ideas on that? Is there any good way to restrict the singleton object to one instance of the dll? Language is c++
