• Open a PDF file in an external app on iPad

  I'd like to make my app to open a specified PDF by an external app of the user's choice on the iPad. How can I do that? Or, is there any open-source PDF reader framework available so that I can put it into my app? My situation in more detail: I'm thinking of porting to the iPad from OS X / rewriting from scratch for the iPad an app which manages lots of PDFs (journal articles, etc.), but I don't want to write the PDF reader part, because there are many good ones already out there; I don't want to reinvent the wheels. (You might say you shouldn't reinvent pdf management apps, but I'd like to make one as a front end to SPIRES, and there isn't one so far.) As the app would be a front end to a serious reading activity, UIWebView's pdf capability is not enough. Also, users of my app would have various preferences which app to use. • Web based interface for open SSL client certificates

  Hi there! We are currently developing a apache2-based web application and want to invite some beta testers to give it a try. To be on the safe side, access should be provided by individual browser certificates (.p12) which are issued using a (fake) CA. Our users should be passing a complete register/login process and some of them will be granted administrative privileges within the application. That's why a preceding simple web-based authentication won't be sufficient. Atm, I am using a serverside shellscript to generate the certificates each time. Do you know about a small, web-based tool to simplify the process of generating / revoking those certificates? Maybe an overview of the CA's index.txt plus the option to revoke a cert and a link to download them directly?

• WCF: Proxy open and close - whaaa?

  I am maintaing a windows form application using WCF and are using net.tcp internally. The lifecycle of our connections is GET/USE/CLOSE. We are having a problem with the application pool crashing with no trace. In looking at netstat, I can see when I come into the application as we have a login service. However, even though we are creating the proxy in a using statement, the connection in netstat does not go away until I physically close the application. Is this right? Should I be doing something diffent on the client to force the connection to close? So if the connection stays open, does it stay open for the duration of the openTimeout setting and then gets torn down? Thanks.

  Hello. I have a dedicated server on 1&1 and I manage it with Plesk. The problem is that if I try to send a mail outside the server, I must to authenticate with the email and the password, but if I send an email to a address inside of my server I don't need neither email or password. This is a problem because the spammers are sending mails without any problem to the server accounts. We are receiving about 900 - 1200 emails everyday! What can I do? I use qmail on CentOS Thanks

  From Excel, I need to open an Access database and run one of the database's macros. I'm using Excel and Access 2007. Here is my code in Excel: Sub accessMacro() Dim appAccess As New Access.Application Set appAccess = Access.Application appAccess.OpenCurrentDatabase "C:\blah.mdb" appAccess.Visible = True appAccess.DoCmd.RunMacro "RunQueries.RunQueries" appAccess.CloseCurrentDatabase End Sub In the Access Database, there is a procedure named RunQueries in a module named RunQueries. Each time I run this, I get the following error: Runtime error '2485': Microsoft Access Office can't find the object 'RunQueries.' I have also tried: appAccess.DoCmd.RunMacro "RunQueries" and I get the same errors message. Any idea how to do this? By the way, I could go into a long explanation about why I need to do this, but let me just say that I've already argued against it, and I have to do it this way (meaning, I have to use Excel as a frontend to open several Access dbs and run their macros).

• Open a screen session inside a certain user on boot Ubuntu Server Linux

  I currently have a private server which I test my web apps on which runs Ubuntu Server 10.04 I also host a few game servers (rather than having wasted CPU time :-D) for some of my friends. These game servers I run in the game user account and each one has it's own screen session (so friends can ssh in and reboot the game server etc...). For example screen -R l4d2 runs ./start in the L4D2 folder. However if I reboot the server (which I have to do occasionally) all these sessions close and I have to manually create all the screen sessions and run the required games within them. Is there a way to set these screen sessions as Daemons or services or just boot on server start so they restart themselves on server reboot? • How small is *too small* for an opensource project?

  I have a fair number of smaller projects / libraries that I have been using over the past 2 years. I am thinking about moving them to Google Code to make it easier to share with co-workers and easier to import them into new projects on my own environments. The are things like a simple FSMs, CAN (Controller Area Network) drivers, and GPIB drivers. Most of them are small (less than 500 lines), so it makes me wonder are these types of things too small for a stand alone open-source project? Note that I would like to make it opensource because it does not give me, or my company, any real advantage.

• Creating PDF Invoices - Are there any templating solutions?

  Our company is looking to integrate invoices into a new system we are developing. We require some a solution to create a layout of the invoice and then convert to pdf. We have considered just laying out the invoice in html/css then converting to pdf. We have also considered using SVG-PDf conversion. Both of these solutions integrate well into our existing templating language used for our web application. Historically we have been a Microsoft based business and used Crystal Reports for such a task but we are looking an open source Linux solution for this project. Does any one have any suggestions of an approach or technology we could use for such a task?

• Open folder in new window in vista

  In XP, to ensure a folder opened in a new window, I held down CTRL when I opened (by mouse or keyboard) the folder. This action is so ingrained to me, I pretty much don't even realise I'm doing it at a conscious level. Unfortunately, this action apparently hasn't made it to Vista. Is there a new way to do this, or am I just missing something obvious?

• How to reliably keep an SSH tunnel open?

  I use an SSH tunnel from work to go around various idotic firewalls (it's ok with my boss :)). The problem is, after a while the ssh connection usually hangs, and the tunnel is broken. If I could at least monitor the tunnel automatically, I could restart the tunnel when it hangs, but I haven't even figured a way of doing that. Bonus points for the one who can tell me how to prevent my ssh connection from hanging, of course!

  vim comes with a nice built-in interactive tutorial. You can access this tutorial by just running: $ vimtutor It is very easy to use because it creates working cases for basic commands. Is there a more advanced tutorial? Has any one though to build one to help uses take their VIM skills to the next level. Most tutorial and cheat-sheet sites out there for vim only show commands but not necessarily specific uses and examples. Is there an advance tutorial out there? Is this the type of project that could be an open source document that everyone can add examples to? Like a Vim Interactive Wiki or similar to the RegEx sites that have the built in regex testers.

  I'm having the following problem: I'm using Oracle ADF for the view and controller of my app. With OpenSessionInViewFilter, I intercept the request and open an Hibernate's Session, and it is closed as soon as the bean's method finishes. What I need is to keep the Session opened until the page is rendered, because in my JSP y use the lazy attributes of the object i load from the DB. For example: When I enter index.jspx the IndexBean#main() is executed: public class IndexBean{ private DBObject myDBObject; public String main(){ this.myDBObject = this.myDAO.loadObjectFromDB(); return null; } } in index.jspx I have: ... <af:inputText value="#{myDBObject.lazyAttribute}" /> ...   Hello, because it's almost obvious that either Thunderbird or Firefox freeze my whole system after some time, I'd like to not use FF at the moment and let Thunderbird run only for a short time as long as I check e-mails. Thunderbird web links should be opened with opera from now. For that I went in Thunderbird to Preferences-Advanced-General-Config Editor and set the following: network.protocol-handler.app.http -> /usr/bin/opera network.protocol-handler.app.https -> /usr/bin/opera network.protocol-handler.warn-external.ftp -> true network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http -> true network.protocol-handler.warn-external.https -> true Moreover I changed in Gnome in System-Preferences-Prefered Applications Opera as webbrowser and I checked in FF that it should warn if FF is not the default browser (obviously it isn't anymore). Unfortunately all of these settings doesn't work. Thunderbird still opens web links with FF. Any explantions why? (I already restarted Thunderbird although I don't have to, but no effect)

• Acad 14 SOLIDS disappeared, DWG file doesn't open correctly

  I made a drawing in Autocad 14 (Win XP) containing of mostly SOLID's. I saved and re-opened it multiple times without any problem. Before I last saved it I viewed my drawing using the SHADE functions. After re-opening all my SOLIDS have disappeared. I spent numerous hours searching for a solution, tried SATFIX.ARX , AUDIT, RECOVER without success (ACIS error - which should be gone after applying SATFIX), changed my computer locale from German (decimal = comma) to English (decimal = dot) but my screen remains empty (and yes I tried to recover from a .BAK, too) I also tried to export (the non-display drawing) into DXF and can confirm that all my objects are in there, but re-opening the DXF results in a huge ACIS error list again I am desperate - please can someone help - thanks! • Text editor for Mac that will open any file

  In Windows, every text editor I encountered allowed me to drag and drop any file type into it and it opened. Apparently, Mac app developers have a different philosophy because I can't find a simple free text editor for OS X that will do this. TextWrangler came highly recommended but it can't accomplish this simple feat. Can anyone suggest one? Edit apparently on at least some editors, there is a distinction between drag/drop in the document list area vs. the typing area. In addition to the accepted answer, this is one thing to be aware of. I still don't know why it doesn't work in TextEdit, but this is true for TextWrangler and Smultron.

• Minimum Requirements for (open) Solaris?

  I'm thinking about knocking together a Solaris box at home to act as a combination server and learning exercise. What are the minimum hardware specs I can throw at it such that it'll be actually usable? I'd be cobbling the machine together from a stack of various x86 PC spares/leftovers. Does anyone have experience with Solaris at the lower end of the spectrum? The Sun site, for example, claims it'll run with as little as 255 megs of ram, but is it worth the exercise with less than a gig? Will my old Pentium II 450 cut the mustard? (I'm willing to throw a couple of bucks at pricewatch/mwave/newegg on this, but if I need to build a better rig than my main PC, I may not bother.)
