• Occasional "Could not load file or assembly" in asmx WebService on IIS and DFS

  We have a handfull of ASMX web service hosted on two identical Windows Server 2003 boxes. The virtual directory for the web services is loaded in a DFS share, both servers point to the same share. We have a load balancer between the internet and the two web servers. At a seemingly random interval (right now about twice per week) when a user tries to access a method on the web service, IIS returns the error: "Could not load file or assembly" for one of the assemblies used in the method call, and will continue reporting it each time the method is called until the app pool is recycled. We haven't found any distinguishable pattern to the problem. This is what I know: the missing assembly varies (but it's always a home-brew assembly) the Web Service method that fails varies there is no noticeable pattern to the times or intervals where the problem appears there are no admin users accessing the servers when the problem appears the failing method will work correctly on one server and fail on the other, even though both point to the same bin folder the problem can always be corrected by recycling the app pool and making no other changes I have enabled the Assembly Binder Log, and know that the binder is looking in the correct location for the file. Our assemblies are compiled for .Net 3.5.

• RAID1 Broken Mirroring

  I'm having a little server with Windows Small Business Server 2003. I'm using RAID1, via a HighPoint Rocket RAID 1640 RAID-card, using two harddrives. This week the server alarmed, and durig reboot I got the error-message Broken Mirroring (User Manual page 30). I had a few alternatives (see the manual), first I tried Continue, but the server restarted during boot. Next time I took Power Off, and replaced the oldest harddrive with a new one, and when I booted, I selected Rebuild. Then I selected the new harddrive to be the new one. The rebuild-procedure started and a progress bar at 0% showed up, but after a few seconds I got the message Copy Failed!, then the server booted and Windows Server started. Now it works fine. But I guess that I'm just using one harddrive now, and it's not mirrored. I haven't touched the server since then (two days ago). What should I do now? I have no experience of this situation. Anyone that have some guidance?

• Error 720 on VPN (PPTP) attempt

  When I attempt to connect to a server running XP x64 (so essentially Server 2003) using a PPTP connection, it fails with client-side error Registering your computer on the network... Error 720: A connection to the remote computer could not be established. You might need to change the network settings for this configuration. and server-side error Event ID: 20050 The user WINSERV3\Andy connected to port VPN8-1 has been disconnected because no network protocols were successfully negotiated. I have configured the router to pass both TCP packets on 1723 and GRE packets. I have used Wireshark (filtering out ARP, UDP, and all TCP ports other than 1723) to observe the packets received by the server. Wireshark does not explicitly name any protocol GRE, but it does tell me the server sent and received TCP, PPTP, PPP LCP, PPP CHAP, PPP CBCP, and PPP IPCP. The connection seems to go wrong at packet 30, where the protocol is PPP LCP, with the payload of the packet being labeled "Protocol Reject". Obviously, this is going from server to client. This would seem to lead to the conclusion that there is something wrong with my client, which runs Windows 7 Ultimate x64. However, it is able to connect to my house's router, which runs the DD-WRT firmware and is thus a PPTP endpoint. I'm thoroughly at a loss. Please help!

• MySQL remote access not working - Port Close?

  I am not able to get a remote connection established to MySQL. • Advice needed: ADSL and VPN for a small company

  Hi. I need advice on purchasing an ADSL modem/router for a small company. At the moment, we are using the iBurst Wireless service for internet connectivity. I have the iBurst desktop modem, which connects to my Netgear WNR2000 router via ethernet. I am using the Netgear WNR2000 to deploy a wireless network as well. I have also set up a VPN using Windows Server 2003, and enabled the VPN Passthrough settings on the Netgear router. I am able to connect to the office network remotely without difficulty. However the problem that I've read is that the Netgear WNR2000 only supports VPN passthrough for a single session. This is simply not good enough. I need to be able to support at least 3 concurrent VPN connections immediately, and up to 5 in the near future. Now I am cancelling my iBurst Wireless service and have just got my ADSL line installed. I have to purchase an ADSL modem, and now is a good time to think of future proofing my investment. I need a good ADSL modem, that will allow me to support at least 5 concurrent VPN connections, or more, without breaking the bank. My budget is about 150-200 USD. I believe that my current Netgear WNR2000 router will be useless, except maybe to extend my wireless network in the future by a bit. Is there a solution where I can still use my Netgear WNR2000 for WiFi, for e.g., by connecting a cheaper non-WiFi ADSL modem to the Netgear router? If not, then which WiFi-enabled ADSL modem/router that supports at least 5 VPN passthroughs can you recommend? To sum it up, I need an ADSL modem/router that is: ADSL & ADSL2+ compatible has built-in 802.11n 270/300mbps WiFi (if having this feature doesn't push the price up too much) supports at least 5 VPN connections using VPN passthrough EDIT: Answer 2.10 in the following FAQ has me a bit worried - What is VPN/multiple VPN Pass-through?

  Question: Executing remote (Sysinternals) command... pskill \\machine winlogon ...can budge a server that is stuck rebooting, but how/why does this work? How do you know which service to kill? To recreate (e.g.): You run Windows Update, allow a reboot, and ...NOTHING! RDP gets cut off but the server does not reboot. Just about every other service seems to stay up. Further Background: I've faced this problem on VMs hosted around the planet for some years, and used various sc.exe and shutdown commands to learn the state of and attempt remote reboot of servers in such a state, with limited success. Most datacentres don't offer any way to see the true console or power off/on such machines. They charge $$ for you to call them to do such simple things after hours, when you nearly always have to run your maint tasks. e.g. NET USE \\machine\IPC$ /USER:login password sc \\machine query RpcSs sc \\machine query TermService sc \\machine query wuauserv tasklist /s machine This occasionally works for me... shutdown /m \\machine /r /f /t: 0 ...but more often than not it fails with: A system shutdown is in progress (1115). I found this question, and the answer by @Tweek, and it worked really well, but was I just lucky? Can not RDP to Win 2003 box or initiate remote restart @Tweek said to run: pskill \\hostname winlogon ...and that got me past this situation in a new way (Server 2008 R2 in my most recent case) - really useful! I just need to understand if I got lucky or there is more science here. What I'd like to know is why the winlogon process? @Livne said to use "tasklist /s HostName" to see what is the culprit, but how do you tell from the listed output? It's just a list of running tasks etc. From that I would not know what to look for, nor could I see anything about the winlogon process that suggested to my eyes that was the one to kill.

• Oracle 10g for Windows does not start up on system boot

  We have an Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition installation (10.2.0.1.0) on a Windows Server 2003 virtual machine. It was initially created with Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 but has now been migrated to Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. The services start on system boot, but the instance does not start up. I'd still like to work out why it's not working.

• SQL Server Management Studio not scripting all objects

  i've been attempting to script a database using SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. i cannot get it to script some objects. It scripts others, but skips some. i can provide detailed screen shots the options being selected including all tables the folder where the script files will go the folder being empty before scripting the scripting process saying Sucess when scripting a table the destination folder no longer empty, with a hundred or so script files the script of some tables not being in the folder. And earlier SSMS would not script some views. Is this a known thing that the the Generate Scripts task does not generate scripts? Update Known issue on Microsoft Connect, but Microsoft couldn't repro the steps, so they closed closed the ticket. Fails on SQL Server 2005, also fails on SQL Server 2008. • Exchange Server 2010: move mailboxes from recoveded and mounted edb to user’s mailbox

  One of our exchange servers crashed, and I am trying to recover the mailboxes. We had 1 exchange 2003 server named "apex" and 1 exchange 2010 server named "2008Enterprise. the exchange 2010 server named "2008Enterprise" crashed. I created a new exchange 2010 server named "Providence". I ran the command on Providence: New-MailboxDatabase -Recovery -Name JBCMail -Server Providence -EdbFilePath "c:\data\Exchange\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0579285147\Mailbox Database 0579285147.edb" -LogFolderPath "c:\data\Exchange\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0579285147" this command executed and finished without error I then ran the command: eseutil /p E00 this command was executed from the below directory: c:\data\Exchange\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0579285147 I then mounted the JBCMail with the mount command note: I do not have my full typed command. Inside my Exchange Management Console (EMC) I can view the new mailbox database named JBCMail. The JBCMail database is show as mounted on the exchange server named Providence. I can see the crashed Exchange server named 2008Exchange. In the EMC the crashed exchange server states the Copy Status under ServerConfiguration-Mailbox is ServiceDown. From here I need to recover three mailboxes The mail boxes are on the apex server. How do I move the mailboxs from apex to Providence? How do I restore the mailboxes from JBCmail mounted database to the user's mailbox? I do not fully understand how to use the Restore-Mailbox command because when I use this command it tries to restore the mailbox to the dead apex server. • Latency between IIS and SQL on same physical, two VMs

  I have a single server (2x4 core CPUs, 32GB ram), that is a Windows Server 2012 Hyper V host, and it hosts two guest VMs (also Windows Server 2012 instances). One of them is a web server, the other is a SQL server. When hitting a page that loops over 50 records, there is noticeable latency. I capture/report the timings of each iteration on the loop, and each iteration is about 20-30 milliseconds. Of course, this amounts to over a second of latency for the whole loop. I thought maybe SQL needed to be tuned, but running profiler on it, the queries are showing almost 0 duration, so it seems the bottleneck is in transit between the two VMs. I have both VMs configured to use the actual NIC (vs. using a VNIC), so maybe that's part of my problem. Also, this is a classic ASP site, so it's using the SQL OLE DB provider, and I'm wondering if that is part of the problem. This is a new server setup, from an existing Windows 2003/IIS6 server setup where both web and DB run on the same server instance (no virtualization). On that setup, there is no such latency when looping over the cursor like this. But there are so many variables, I'm not sure where to start ruling things out.

• Performance mitigations serving content from a UNC share via IIS 6

  I have a quad processor vmware instance running Windows 2003 and 1gb ethernet. I'm comparing serving the exact same heavy .NET 2.0 content from the local hard drive versus serving it from a UNC drive. If I use WCAT to load it down, I see about a 40% reduction in transactions/sec while serving from the UNC. Processor time barely moves from 45% and the NIC sits around 40% either way. I don't see any significant memory loading either way. Context Switches/Transaction, though, more than doubles when serving from the UNC. Pathlengths more than double as well, but I believe that's just an expression of the effect of context switching. All told, it looks like the bottleneck is processor switching while waiting on content from the UNC share. Is my experience about the norm? Is there some mitigation I might try? I twiddled HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters\MaxCmds a little bit per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd296694(WS.10).aspx, but to no obvious effect. I kind of doubt my problem is lack of connections, but rather just the act of switching from thread to thread while waiting on data.

• How can I access a webDAV folder as a UNC share?

  first of all I am just getting to know about webDAV and appreciate your patience. I have a virtual directory on IIS 6 (windows 2003) that is based on a network share on a file server different from web server. something like www.mysite.com/myreports where myreport is based on \myfileserver\reports. I have been asked by network folks to not use the UNC path like that for security reason and try to explore using webDAV. What I have been told is webDAV can give me a UNC path without requiring to open the ports required for a file server UNC path. Then I can use the new UNC path to map my virtual directory and my asp.net code will not require any change. Help: Being new to webDAV, I did some research over the web. I now can create a web folder in fileserver. I put IIS on file server as well. I can browse the content as http:://fileserver/mywebDAVreports which is based on reports folder. But I don't know how to get a UNC for this web folder to be able to map my virtual directory on web server. I appreciate any help on this. Regards, Amar

• Where should CentOS users get /usr/share/virtio-win/drivers for virt-v2v?

  I need to migrate a number of virtual machines from VMware ESX to CentOS 6 KVM hypervisors. Ultimately, I wrote an RPM spec file that solved my problem at https://github.com/fasrc/virtio-win/blob/master/virtio-win.spec but I'm not sure if there's another RPM in base CentOS or EPEL (something standard) I should be using instead. Originally, I was getting this "No root device found in this operating system image" error when attemting to migrate a Window 2008 VM. . . [root@kvm01b ~]# virt-v2v -ic 'esx://my-vmware-hypervisor.example.com/' \ -os transferimages --network default my-vm virt-v2v: No root device found in this operating system image. . . . but I solved this with a simply yum install libguestfs-winsupport since the docs say: If you attempt to convert a virtual machine using NTFS without the libguestfs-winsupport package installed, the conversion will fail. Next I got an error about missing drivers for Windows 2008. . . [root@kvm01b ~]# virt-v2v -ic 'esx://my-vmware-hypervisor.example.com/' \ -os transferimages --network default my-vm my-vm_my-vm: 100% [====================================]D virt-v2v: Installation failed because the following files referenced in the configuration file are required, but missing: /usr/share/virtio-win/drivers/amd64/Win2008 . . . and I resolved this by grabbing an iso from Fedora at http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/virtio-win/latest/ as recommended by http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/WindowsGuestDrivers/Download_Drivers and building an RPM from it with this spec file: https://github.com/fasrc/virtio-win/blob/master/virtio-win.spec Now, virt-v2v exits without error: [root@kvm01b ~]# virt-v2v -ic 'esx://my-vmware-hypervisor.example.com/' \ -os transferimages --network default my-vm my-vm_my-vm: 100% [====================================]D virt-v2v: my-vm configured with virtio drivers. [root@kvm01b ~]# Now, my question is, rather that the virtio-win RPM from the spec file I wrote, is there some other more standard RPM in base CentOS or EPEL that will resolve the error above? • In Windows 7, why can't I use perfmon against a remote server?

  I am on Windows 7 and trying to run perfmon against Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 servers. I am running into the same issue with all remote machines. When creating a data collector set, I specify a domain account that is in the administrators group on the remote machines (and "Performance Log Users" and "Performance Monitor Users" to be safe). On the "Available Counters" screen, When I type in a remote computer name, PerfMon locks up for a good 2-3 minutes before I can add any counters. I can then save the collector set. However, when I save it, the go/stop buttons are disabled if I click the set in the left panel, and missing if I click the Data collector set itself in the right panel. See the screens below. I can run data collector sets against my local machine with no problem. I am opening perfmon with my local account in both scenarios. I also have Remote Registry Service started on each remote machine. What is going on?

• Backing up SQL NetApp Snapshots using TSM

  In our environment we have a 3 node SQL 2005 Cluster which is on NetApp storage. We are currently using SMSQL (NetApp SnapManager for SQL) to take Snapshot backups of the data. This works great, but due to some audit requirements we are also forced to maintain some copies on tape. We have used NDMP in other places across the enterprise but we do not want to use it in this specific instance. Basically what I need to do is, get the most recent snapshot copy of the databases on tape, via Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM). What I have done is, obtained a basic Windows Server 2003 VM with SnapDrive installed, which is SAN attached and zoned to the NetApp, and I have written a batch file to do the following: Mount the latest __RECENT snapshot lun to the host, using a specific drive letter Perform a TSM based incremental backup Dis-mount the LUN This seems to work fine, except sometimes the LUN's do not mount due to some sort of timeout. Also, due to my limited knowledge of windows batch scripting, I have no way to monitor the success or failure of these backups since I do not know how to send a valid return code back to the TSM scheduling service. Is there a more efficient/elegant way to accomplish this without NDMP?

  After installing the October 2011 recommended patch bundle on a Solaris 10 the host fails to boot. The output is {0} ok boot SC Alert: Host System has Reset screen not found. keyboard not found. Rebooting with command: boot Boot device: /pci@1f,700000/scsi@2/disk@0,0:a File and args: \ Evaluating: Out of memory Warning: Fcode sequence resulted in a net stack depth change of 1 Evaluating: Evaluating: The file just loaded does not appear to be executable. {3} ok If I do a boot -F failsafe the host come up and I'm able to mount the root device (ufs on /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0) and nothing appears broken, i.e I can see the logfiles from the patch install etc. Root device still have 1GB+ free. Only 2 kernel patches was installed from the patch bundle: 144500-19 & 147440-02. Any hints how to debug it further, etc.

  I have two instances of mssql 2005 and am using CA XOSoft replication. The master is a failover cluster and the replica is a standalone server. They are all running Server 2003 sp2 x64. Same patch levels on all servers. This setup has worked great for several months until we recently restricted the RPC ports on both nodes of the master(5000 - 6000 using rpccfg.exe). We have to implement egress filtering, thus the limiting of the ports. We began receiving login errors for sql windows authentication and NETLOGON Event ID: 5719: This computer was not able to set up a secure session with a domain controller in domain due to the following: Not enough storage is available to process this command. This may lead to authentication problems. Make sure that this computer is connected to the network. If the problem persists, please contact your domain administrator. We also see group policies failing to update and cluster file shares go offline at the same time. The RPC ports were set back to default when we started seeing these problems and the servers rebooted, but the problems persist. The domain controllers are not showing any errors. Running dcdiag and netdiag shows everything is fine. We have noticed that the XOSoft service ws_rep.exe is using a lot of handles(8 - 9k), about the same number that sqlserver is using. As soon as xosoft replication is stopped the login errors cease and everything functions correctly. I have opened a ticket with CA for XOSoft, but I'm not sure that the problem is actually xosoft, but that it is the one bringing the problem to light. I'm looking for tips on debugging RPC problems. Specifically on limiting the ports and then reverting the changes.

• Migrated SCOM 2007 R2 Reporting Services but reports are gone

  I've migrated Reporting Services on a SCOM 2007 R2 install, and noticed that the reports have not being copied. I can create a new report, but the ones I've had because of the management packs are gone. I've tried re-applying the Management Packs however it doesn't re-deploy them and when I try to access for example: Monitoring - Microsoft Windows Print Server - Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and 2003 Print Services - State View - select any item and click Alerts on the right menu. I get the following error: Date: 12/24/2010 12:40:35 PM Application: System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Application Version: 6.1.7221.0 Severity: Error Message: Cannot initialize report. Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportServerException: The item '/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Library/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Alert' cannot be found. (rsItemNotFound) at Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ServerReport.GetExecutionInfo() at Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ServerReport.GetParameters() at Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Mom.Internal.UI.Reporting.Parameters.ReportParameterBlock.Initialize(ServerReport serverReport) at Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Mom.Internal.UI.Console.ReportForm.SetReportJob(Object sender, ConsoleJobEventArgs args) The report doesn't exist on the reporting services side. how do I re-deploy this reports? • How to use a local Leopard Server Mail server acting "like" an Exchange mail server

  We have a local Exchange 2003 server (company .local) who is collecting POP3 mail accounts on a distant (company .com) mailserver. The mails are collected by the Exchange server every 5-10 minutes and stored locally (on company .local), so the users can read them without going on the "real" mail server (company.com) What was explaned to me is that the mail collection is made with POP Now we are migrating on Snow Leopard Server. We have chosen to use a new extension for our local domain: .leo So our mailserver's FQDN is mail.company.leo, and the users have a user [email protected] formated mail address. A) All works fine except that I can't find how to tell the mail.company.leo that he must retreive the mails from the "real" public server (mail.company.com) I'm hoping to use IMAP and not POP. I can send mail using SMTP relay from mail.company.leo but (I know it's trivial) answering is not possible, even if I specify the reply-to as [email protected] (this seems to be related to A) ) I don't know if it's very complicated (I suspect not, but...) to achieve what I want to do, and I'm not a genius. But as I'm a little bit lost, I hopesomebody can or will help me. Solving this will allow us to use iCal invitations too, so a lot of services depends of these mailserver settings Some of you discuss the fact thta we choose to use a "new" tld with the .leo extension. We have no problem for that, we could use .local. no problem ;) We used .leo instead of .local just to differentiate the two systems (Exchange and SnowLeopardServer). The question was not about that, it was just to know if we can set a SnowLeopard mail server to act like an Exchange Server. • How do I stop MSYS from transforming my compiler options?

  Is there a way to stop MSYS/MinGW from transforming what it thinks are paths on my command lines? I have a project that's using nmake & Microsoft Visual Studio 2003 (yeecccch). I have the build system all ported and ready to go for GNU make (and tested with Cygwin). Something weird is happening to my compiler flags when I try to compile in an MSYS environment, though. Here's a simplified example: $ cl /nologo Microsoft (R) 32-bit C/C++ Optimizing Compiler Version 13.10.6030 for 80x86 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. /out:nologo.exe C:/msys/1.0/nologo LINK : fatal error LNK1181: cannot open input file 'C:/msys/1.0/nologo.obj' As you can see, MSYS is transforming the /nologo compiler switch into a windows path, and then sending that to the compiler. I really don't want this to happen - in fact I'd be happy if MSYS never transformed any paths - my build system had to take care of all that when I first ported to Cygwin. Is there a way to make that happen? It does work to change the command to $ cl -nologo Which produces the expected results, but this build system is very large and very painful to update. I really don't want to have to go in and change every use of a / for a flag to a -. In particular, there may be tools that don't support the use of the - at all, and then I'll really be stuck. • How do I host multiple independent, secured SharePoint sites (WSS 3.0) without using Active Director

  I have a SharePoint site set up on one of my networks to service Active Directory users. To be clear, this is a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 installation running on Windows Server 2003 Standard. It is not an option to upgrade the server or SharePoint version. Management would like to create several new sites, one for each of a handful of clients. These sites will be used like "dropboxes" or FTP sites so that my company can make large files available to outside contacts, and vice versa. Here are my requirements: I do not want to have to create Active Directory accounts for each external contact. If possible, I would like to store the external usernames and passwords in a database that I can write a small GUI for so that management can handle adding their own external contacts. Each client site must be sandboxed from each other and from my main company SharePoint site. I would like to keep everything running on port 80 and be able to access the sites as either clientname.mycompany.com or www.mycompany.com/clientname If anybody has ever done this I would really appreciate hearing about any lessons you learned and suggestions for how to set this up. • Expected IOPS for log writing on PS6000X SAN?

  Customer is experiencing poor Sybase ASE 15 performance on a PS6000X SAN with 16 X 450GB 10K in RAID-50. The server is a Dell R710 running 2003 server R2 64bit in ESX 4.0.0,256968 I've used sqlio to benchmark the sequential write performance of 4KB blocks on the drive. sqlio -kW -t1 -s600 -dE -o1 -fsequential -b4 -BH -LS sqliotestfile.dat Result is 1900 IOPS. However, when Sybase is running a sustained workload of small inserts SAN HQ shows a consistent 590 IOPS (and 100% 4K write activity). It also shows that the write latency increases to 1.2ms from <1ms. Monitoring and tests in Sybase demonstrate the performance problem is IO related and in particular there is a lot of wait time writing to the log. The SAN indicates that write caching is enabled. What IOPS should the SAN be capable of for 4k sequential write activity? Also, with write caching enabled, shouldn't the controller be batching up the 4K writes into something more efficient? Also, any tips on Sybase on ESX would be appreciated.

• SSD - Tweaks/Recommended Configuration

  I've just purchased my first SSD drive (a 32GB MLC from Imation) without doing enough research ahead of time in the spirit of giving the new technology a shot and getting myself up to speed by empirical research rather than reading countless reviews and I'm now at a crossroads. I've built a new server to test the new drive and at first I wanted to test it with Windows Server 2003 R2 x86 but after I loaded the OS on it and it had problems loading the drivers of the motherboard I went to the internet and did more research and the more I read the more I got confused. Finally I decided to try out Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 since it supposedly has certain support for SSD drives inherent in the NT 6.1 core. Indeed I've had much better luck with the new OS and got all the drivers installed but now I still have some questions: Should I set the drive to: IDE Emulation or AHCI in the BIOS? Should I make any other changes in the BIOS (I've read on the internet that Write Through should be changed to Write Back) Should I make any other adjustments in Windows (i.e. Tweaks such as disabling prefetching or disabling the Last Accessed Timestamp on the filesystem) and if so, is there a good/reliable online resource with instructions? I'm so tired of reading through countless online posts which spend 80% of coverage on the history of SSDs and benchmarks and explanations of how SSDs work. I got that, now I'd like to know if there's anything I should actually do to make sure Windows Server 2008 R2 makes good use of the SSD.
