• Pool Billiard AI

  Im implementing a pool billiard game in Java and it all works fine. It is a multiplayer game, but nevertheless, it should also be possible to play it alone. For this purpose I'm trying to implement a simple KI. At the moment, the KI choose just randomly a direction and a random intensity of the impulse (don't know the correct english word for that). Of course this AI is very poor and unlikely to ever challenge a player. So i thought about improving the KI, but there are several hard to solve problems. First I thought of just choosing the nearest ball and to try to put it directly into the nearest hole. This isn't that bad, but if there other balls in the line between, it isn't really working anymore. Additionally this dosn't solve te problem of calculating the intensity of the impulse. So are there any general advice? Or any ideas? Best practices?

• Android View.onDraw() always has a clean Canvas

  I am trying to draw an animation. To do so I have extended View and overridden the onDraw() method. What I would expect is that each time onDraw() is called the canvas would be in teh state that I left it in and I could choose to clear it or just draw over parts of it (This is how it worked when I used a SurfaceView) but each time the canvas comes back already cleared. Is there a way that I can not have it cleared? Or maybe save the previous state into a Bitmap so I can just draw that Bitmap and then draw over top of it?

  I am working on a project with RL & NN I need to determine the action vector structure which will be fed to a neural network.. I have 3 different actions (A & B & Nothing) each with different powers (e.g A100 A50 B100 B50) I wonder what is the best way to feed these actions to a NN in order to yield best results? 1- feed A/B to input 1, while action power 100/50/Nothing to input 2 2- feed A100/A50/Nothing to input 1, while B100/B50/Nothing to input 2 3- feed A100/A50 to input 1, while B100/B50 to input 2, while Nothing flag to input 3 4- Also to feed 100 & 50 or normalize them to 2 & 1 ? • Attaching a static library to an iphone/ipad application

  Hello, which is the best approach to include a static library with into an application for iPhone or iPad? I could choose to compile the library supplying right platform and building a library file with the ar utility and then add as a framework to the project including the source of the library .c/.h and compile them together with the application The first approach seems simpler, because I won't care about managing all specific settings of the library I want to include but how can I create the library both for iPhone and iPad and allow xcode to use the right library upon linking? The second approach seems more complex since xcode will take care about compiling my application and the library (with different settings I suppose) then how should I go? I can easily add sources of the lib but I'll have to include the make scripts to allow xcode use them to build in the right way. Any suggestions about how to proceed? The library I'm trying to include is libssh. (I know that this library, of course, has already been compiled and tried succesfully on iPhone) Thanks in advance.

• PendingIntent from notification and application history conflicts

  I'm creating a notification with something similar to the following: Intent ni = new Intent(this, SomeActivity.class); ni.putExtra("somestring", "somedata"); PendingIntent contentIntent = PendingIntent.getActivity(this, 0, ni, PendingIntent.FLAG_UPDATE_CURRENT|PendingIntent.FLAG_ONE_SHOT); Context context = getApplicationContext(); notification.setLatestEventInfo(context, res.getString(R.string.app_name), text, contentIntent); The key here is the extra data on the Intent for the notification. Once I click on the notification and it brings up SomeActivity, it brings up the activity and the extra data is available. However, if I exit the app, hold the home button until the recent activities list comes up, and choose to open the app again, the extra data is still passed. Is there a way I can make this data get passed only if the app is opened via the Notification, and not from the recent activities list?

• Should I Prefer a Closed or Open List<> System?

  Hey guys, I've got a class in my project that stores a List< of elements. I'm trying to figure out whether I should allow the user to add to that List directly (e.g. Calling the native add/remove methods) or lock it down by declaring the List private and only allowing a handful of methods I choose to actually alter the List. It's a framework, so I'm trying to design it as robustly as possible, but I also want to keep it as simple and error-free as possible. What's the best practice in this situation? Thanks, Tyler

• Css editor with certain features

  I need a light css editor with certain functions. Already downloaded and tried a few apps but still no luck, none of them fit my requirements. Actually, there is one, CssEdit (or TextMate), but unfortunately i'm a windows user... Already tried: built-in NetBeans IDE css editor (btw nice editor, the one i'm using now for css) IntelJ IDE (very good html and css editor, but using the entire ide just for this - that's crazy) ArduoCss (very buggy in win7 environment) Notepad Notepad++ (it rules, but as i said, i need something more functional for css editing) Style Master ( if i don't find anything else, probably i'll choose this one) Stylizer ( also might be my choice, but it's black interface kills me, also extremy noob-oriented, i even couldn't find a way to see the source code) Some of the features i am looking for: grouping by comments like here snippets autocomplete, if i type for instance f-s, it should recognize and expand it to "font-size" property color picker The editor must have at least the first feature that i listed above. Sorry for my poor english.

• Know any unobstrusive, simple GUI guidelines or design recommendations for notifications?

  Hello again. I'm in the process of designing and testing various ideas for an application whose main functionality will be to notify users of occurring events and offer them with a choice of actions for each. The standard choice would be to create a queue of events showing a popup in the taskbar with the events and actions, but I want this tool to be the less intrusive and disrupting as possible. What I'm after is a good book or papers on studies of how to maximize user productivity in these intrinsically disruptive scenarios (in other words, how to achieve the perfect degree of annoying-ness, not too much, not too little). The user is supposedly interested in these events, they subscribe to them and can choose the actions to perform on each. I prefer books and papers, but the usual StackOverflow wisdom is appreciated as well. I'm after things like: Don't use popups, use instead X Show popups at most 3 seconds Show them in the left corner Use color X because it improves readability and disrupts less That is, cognitive aspects of GUI design that would help users in such a scenario.

• Visual Studio - "attach to particular instance of the process" macro

  I guess prety much everyone who does a lot of debugging have a handy macro in Visual Studio (with shortcut to it on a toolbar) which when called automatically attaches to a particular process (identified by name). it saves a lot of time rather than clicking "Debug" - "Attach to the process ...", but it only works if one is running a single instance of the process one wants to attach to. If theres is more than one instance of particular process in memory - the first one (with a smaller PID?) is being choose by debugger. Does anyone have a macro which shows a dialog (if more that 1 process with a specified name running) and lets developer to select to one he/she really wants to attach to. I guess the selection could be made based on a windwow caption text (which would be suffice in most of cases) and when the particular instance is selected macro passes the PID of the process to the Debugger object? If someone has that macro or knows how to write it - please share. Thanks.

• ComboBox's Selected Value Changed On Lost Focus in VB.NET

  I have a datagridview(dgv) with a DataGridViewComboBoxColumn(colLocation) colLocation.AutoComplete = False colLocation.HeaderText = "Stored to" colLocation.DataSource = DB.getLocation() colLocation.DisplayMember = "description" colLocation.ValueMember = "id" I added the colLocation to dgv. "descirption" contains Unicode characters. I can see the comboBox correctly and choose the item. The problem is when the comboBox lost the focus, the value is changed to first item of the comboBox. Any suggestion? Updated: I found out that the ComboBox doesn't change the data when the DisplayMember is in English characters. It changes only when the DisplayMember is in Unicode chracter. • Best Installation Software?

  I am interested in knowing what the best software would be to build an installation package that performs the following: (1) Installs client application (2) Detects all SQL server instances on network, allowing user to select specific database to upgrade (which would then upgrade database using an embedded SQL script) (3) Installs website on a server/location specified by user, and configures IIS 6.0 and/or 7.0 based on settings that I specify. (4) Creates a simple setup.exe - and allows user to choose installation components (listed above, i.e install client app, sql server database, and/or website), and then download selected components from remove server. I have tried NSIS - as was able to create an installation package that will download a compressed (gzip) component from a remote server, decompress the file, install the components, and then remove the gzip file. So, this worked beautifully. The part where I am stuck is to be able to perform the database upgrade and website install. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks. Chris

• Intellij-Idea: Marking all files of unknown type as text (so that they are searchable)

  Many of my scripts etc in intellij are marked with a question mark. Then when I click on them them it prompts me: The file "bla" cannot be associated with a registered file type. Please choose one: <insert table of file choices> This would not matter except the files are not searchable (with ctrl-shift-n) until they are marked as text. This is a major problem for me. I have an enormous code base and I don't want to mark all of the unknown files as text. Is there anyway that I can do that?

• VCL/Delphi/BCB - which IDE/language should I use?

  I bought Delphi 1 when it came out - and was hooked. When BCB came out (around D3, iirc), I switched, mainly because I have used C/C++ professionally for a few decades. I have "been away" for 7 or 8 years and am now returning. I still have BCB 6 & Delphi 7 (not to mention Kylix). I always felt more comfortable with C++ than Pascal - purely because of work-day familiarity. But, realistically, iirc, most 3rd party VCL components are coded in Delphi/Pascal. And I think I used to have problems debugging Delphi components from BCB, but I could well remember wrongly. Anyhoo, now I am back and intend to use VCL components / hack the code of same / debug them & code a few of my own. Given that I am slightly more comfortable with C++, is there any compelling reason to choose Delphi over BCB, or is this just a case of how long my particular piece of string is?

• Consuming web service from BizTalk with authentication credentials

  I am trying to consume a web service from BizTalk by supplying credentials in the SOAP adapter port. I type in the Web Service URL and then I have the choice of Anonymous, Basic, Digest and NTLM authentication types. How do I supply my username, password and domain?.. when testing with soapUI it works perfectly. The only way I get to supply credentials is Basic or Digest but no matter what I fill in I get a "not authroized" error. The strange thing is that it actually works when I choose the NTLM authentication type but how does it get acces when I have not supplied the credentials. And there is no way that my server has direct access to the service?

We have a requirement to have single package for the installation that will: Show one UI with progress Allow user to choose which features/packages to install Have ability to constrain one feature to another (e.g removing or adding effect other) Support single elevation (UAC) nice to have ability to auto update (not must) support command line + silent installation the package should be built out of the isolated installations (chain them) raise error / messages for missing prerequisites Support patches over time and major upgrades Today we do almost all of the above using MSI with nested installations which is bad practice and we face too many issues in our solution. i know that there are several bootstrappers out there (m$ generic bootstrapper which i think is not good, BURN is the WIX version which is not mature enough) Do you know of other? that work and tested already ? What is the best method to do (without unification of the MSI into a single MSI)

I've been using Erlang for the last year to implement server-side software, but I've never wrote web-applications before. It will be a great experience. Here is my question: are there web-frameworks for Scala except for Lift? Don't get me wrong, Lift looks awesome. I just want to know how many frameworks there are so that I can then choose between them. It's always a good to have a choice, but I the only thing I found was Lift.

• Portable applications for phones?

  What's the best way to write an application in order to get it working on the several phones out there (iPhone, symbian-based, xpPhone, and so on)? The idea I have in mind is that of writing a few interfaces to abstract from phone-dependent stuff (ie: some Input/Output interfaces), implementing such interfaces on the several phones and then writing an application that doesn't use any phone-dependent thing. But is this really possible? What would be the language I should choose for my interfaces and applications? (would love to use C++, hopefully even with GCC extensions) Is there any project that aims to offer what I need? (maybe something like SDL?)

• NSIS Installer - Displaying different licences

  Heya, I'm trying to modify an existing NSIS install script to allow for different licence files to be presented to the user depending on whether they are a new or existing user. I have pre-existing code which detects an existing install in the .onInit section. However I'm running into bumps trying to use the NSIS provided licence screen e.g. !InsertMacro MUI_PAGE_LICENSE Content\Licence.rtf I would like to be able to choose between Licence and Licence2.rtf (though they'll be renamed something representative in the final version). I've tried using selectable sections calling functions which nest the !insertmacro but that doesn't work because it needs to be in the base level of the script. I can't change the parameter to be runtime definable because it needs to know what the file is at compile time to build it into the installer. I know I can roll my own custom page called from a function and do it that way but I was wondering if anyone had got the NSIS installer working with using the MUI_PAGE_LICENSE and different licences.   Hi Does anyone know how to integrate several checkout badges into an order form? It might sound obvious to all (or most) but within the html wouldn't the form tag have an action to just one of the online merchants and not all? For example? I would like to have a basic order form which collects a users name, email, uploaded files, project details, and a few packages to choose from. Once they have selected the package most appropriate to them? They would be given a total cost and asked to pay via Paypal, Google Checkout OR Moneybookers. Can anyone help me out on this? • portlet-mvc 3.0 + maven for websphere portlet: examples?

  I'm trying to develop a websphere portal portlet using java, maven and spring-portlet-mvc 3.0.2.RELEASE but so far I'm not having a lot of luck. The problem that I'm having is that a lot of the tutorials are either outdated, incorrect, contradict eachother or a combination of all the above. Also I have to use RAD but the tutorials also contradict eachother, logically I'd think you'd choose new portlet project, but http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/websphere/library/techarticles/0802_patil-pt1/0802_patil-pt1.html says to use a dynamic webproject. So I was wondering if anyone had a nice example/good tutorial.

• Looking for Eclipse plugin: Lock source tabs in place

  When working with java code in Eclipse I can typically juggle between 20-40 different files, but there usually are just two that I actively work with at the time (test and code). Going back to the code where I want to work after having debugged through 5-10 classes can be a pain. So what I would like to do is to be able to right click on the tab of a class and choose to lock them in place. The classes would then always be available as the first and second tabs furthest to the left in the editor. All other classes (and other files opened in the editor) would then fight over the remaining space in the editor like today. Is there a plugin like this? My google-fu might not be strong enough, cause I find nothing.

  Is there a better way to do this: perms = product(range(1,7),range(1,7),range(1,7)) so that I can choose how many ranges I use? I want it to be equivalent to this, but scalable. def dice(num) if num == 1: perms = ((i,) for i in range(1,7)) elif num == 2: perms = product(range(1,7),range(1,7)) elif num == 3: perms = product(range(1,7),range(1,7),range(1,7)) #... and so on but I know there has to be a better way. I'm using it for counting dice outcomes. Third party extensions Support And most important: how much time it takes to learn, as a programmer and someone who manages the application with little or no programming knowledge.
