• C# CF: file encryption/decryption on the fly

  Hi, i've seen many article on encrypt/decrypt of file and typically a button is used to choose the file for encrypt and another button to decrypt the file. i've seen some application like truecrypt and probably others which does file encryption on-the-fly with transparent. this means that when a encrypted file is clicked to access, it will automatically decrypt and play/open the file. then when the file is closed, it will automatically encrypt again. some have said that the only way to detect file open is through file system filter. but is there other ways to do this in c# compact framework?

• Virtual Function Implementation

  Hi, I have kept hearing this statement. Switch..Case is Evil for code maintenance, but it provides better performance(since compiler can inline stuffs etc..). Virtual functions are very good for code maintenance, but they incur a performance penalty of two pointer indirections. Say i have a base class with 2 subclasses(X and Y) and one virtual function, so there will be two virtual tables. The object has a pointer, based on which it will choose a virtual table. So for the compiler, it is more like switch( object's function ptr ) { case 0x....: X->call(); break; case 0x....: Y->call(); }; So why should virtual function cost more, if it can get implemented this way, as the compiler can do the same in-lining and other stuff here. Or explain me, why is it decided not to implement the virtual function execution in this way? Thanks, Gokul.

  I would like to implement a search function where a user passes all the arguments to the "WHERE" clause at runtime. • how to terminate cocoa app in applicationWillFinishLaunching delegate

  I have to show the custom license Agreement dialog to the user before they start using my application.So, i have added new window in my mainMenu.xib and showing that window modally using [NSApp runModalForWindow:licenseWindow]; in applicationWillFinishLaunching: delegate by making my main window hidden using visible at Launch to unchecked. License window has two buttons Agree and Disagree. I need to show the mainwindow if user clicks on Agree button and terminate the app if they choose Disagree. I try to call [NSApp terminate]; in applicationWillFinishLaunching: but it didn't do anything. Please let me know how i can terminate the app in applicationWillFinishLaunching: Thanks

It looks like I can choose between using: A TStringList A Dynamic Array of strings, and A Linked List of strings In what circumstances is each of these better than the others? Which is best for small lists (under 10 items)? Which is best for large lists (over 1000 items)? Which is best for huge lists (over 1,000,000 items)? Which is best tor minimize memory use? Which is best to minimize loading and/or access time? For reference, I am using Delphi 2009.

• Choice of programming language for learning data structures and algorithms

  Which programming language would you recommend to learn about data structures and algorithms in? Considering the follwing: Personal experience Language features (pointers, OO, etc) Suitability for learning DS & A concepts I ask because there are some books out there that are programming language-agnostic (written from a Mathematical perspective, and use pseudocode). If I learn from one of these I would like to work out the algorithms in a chosen language. Then, there are other books which introduce DS & A concepts with examples in a particular programming laguage - and I would follow these examples as well. Either way, I have to choose a language, and I would like to stick to one throughout. Which one best fits the bill.

• Print out PDF with javascript [closed]

  I have a need to print out multiple PDFs with the help of javascript. Is this even possible without rendering each PDF in a separate window and calling window.print()? Basically, I would like to be able to do something like print('my_pdf_url'). Edit After some searching, I have come to the conclusion that there are no other methods than the one I've described above. It is a far from perfect solution, but it works in simple cases. Edit I ended up merging the PDFs to a monster PDF on the server side and then send this single PDF to the user, who can then choose to print it out.

• Implementing auto-save in WPF / MVVM / NHibernate

  My client likes programs like Microsoft OneNote where changes are saved automatically, and he can choose to discard when he explicitly wants to do so. I will have to implement some undo functionality, but I'll figure that out some other time. With NHibernate, I suppose I can call ISession.Update on every single property / binding change, but I can see real pain with this approach down the road. I am not a fan of timers, but maybe a 5 second timer that starts on property / binding change and at timer end use BackgroundWorker thread to save to db. What do you think?

• Drupal 6: Taxonomy splot up in managed fields?

  So you have two taxonomies, namely: "Business Type" and "Location" This is assigned to a node called BUSINESS. In effect, when the user creates a BUSINESS node, her has to choose for example, location "New York" and type "Information Services". My problem is when: a) Capturing the taxonomy, and b) Displaying the taxonomy I want the two terms to be separated from each other. I.e. I want to be able to move the two terms individual positions in the MANAGE FIELDS view, so that they can be grouped or placed seperately. Currently, Drupal only allows one entry, called "TAXONOMY" which is effectively the two terms next to each other. This is what I have: This is what I want: Bare in mind, I need to be able to use this with Hierarchical Select, which means Content Taxonomy is not an option.

• What is the "official" place for community support for the Mere Mortals .NET framework?

  My team is using the Mere Mortals .NET framework from Oak Leaf. Being used to working with primarily open source software, I found it excruciatingly painful to find ANY community support for MM.NET. When I asked if there was any, the only place I was given to look for support was Universal Thread, which is a site which requires a membership for search and archived questions. It seems like a third party, pay-for site should not be the primary source of support for anything like this, especially MM.NET which costs $700 per developer. It doesn' to me like an entire community around MM.NET would choose to all pay on top of the license just to use a forum. If not Universal Thread, then what is the "official" place to find support for the Mere Mortals .NET framework?

• Is there a tool to navigate targets and properties 's definition?

  I'm working on a bundle of MSBuild script files and many many times I have the need of locating the definition of a called target or a property being used. At the moment, I have to search to the target/property 's name text and view the file containing that text - only then I can read the definition of the target/property I'm looking for. This remind me of the feature of class/variable navigation of Visual Studio: we can choose "Go to definition" or "Find references" when select a class name or a variable. Is there a similar way to work with MSBuild target/property/item? Hope to hear from all of you! Nam.

  I am thinking of designing a web site having multiple related services. For every action of the user in a service there will be some computation going on in each of the other services. I want to display the service in action (chosen by the user) in the middle of the page in enlarged mode and rest of the services as small sized (shrunk) versions around the enlarged mode. The services which are shown in the shrunk version, should actually show what is happening in that service, at run time as if that was the chosen service. A close match to this sort of behavior I know is in Reliance BigTV, where all the small images of all the channels will be going on, and we can choose the one that we want to watch. After choosing that one image will become big and occupy the screen. Please, let me know if I can do some thing like this using css, html, ajax & php.

• How to wait for the user to select one of the datagridview rows?

  I have a datagridview populated with some Names, I want to perform a check of all the Name in another database with the Names in datagridview and add the Surnames to the adjacent cell when a match is found, this I am achieving by string compare method. My Problem is that due to typing inconsistencies & at times with two people having same names some of the names are not being adjudged properly. What I want is to give user the choice to either choose one of the names present in Datagridview which they consider is best match or enter both First Name & Surname in a new row. To achieve this I want the program to wait until user has clicked on one of the rows in the datagridview. Is there a way to wait to this effect? Thanks Jhon

• Wicket Drag and drop functionality for adding an image

  I'm making a wicket app that can manage some options for a cashdesk app. One of the options is to change the image of a selected Product. The user(manager) can choose from the already present images in the database (SQL) when this option is selected, or add a new image if the desired image is not present. Don't mention the test names and awesome images (it's still in test-fase) I prefer to see the adding of an image achieved by Drag and Drop html5 demo [dnd-upload] (From the desktop into the browser) I'm currently using Wicket-6.2.0 and wicket-dnd 0.5.0 and i can't seem to get this working! All examples I can find are from wicket 2.x or lower. It is possible to use drag and drop in Wicket-6.2, but how do I achieve this? There seems to be some DraggableBehavior in wicket? Any help is welcome! [UPDATE] Upgraded to wicket-dnd 0.6

• using Applescript to retrieve movie file duration via Finder properties

  When using Get Info on movie files in the Finder, I've noticed that many movie files have an accessible "Duration" property under the More Info tab. Is there an easy way to access this data using Applescript? I've tried lines like "set theTime to (duration of aFile)", but it doesn't seem to be as simple as that. Ideally I'd like to access the movie duration via the Finder properties without having to actually open the file in QuickTime. Is this possible?   there is an iphone app called supercam and you can get it through the app store free. This app features a way to connect your webcam or dv cam that is connected on the internet, you could set up the ip address and enter the data on the app and it will connect to your online camera. the thing is that they have the video stream and it looks like they embedded the video in a uiview or webview at the bottom they have buttons to choose from all the cameras you have set up. so this is different from other video streaming apps because it does not play the video from the full screen mode (MPMediaPlayer API) would there be any tutorials about this or somehow take reverse engineer this?

FooMain But my project is getting bigger and I would like to split files, make unit tests, etc. But I'm too lazy for reading sbt documentation and doing whatever needs to be done to get a sbt's "Makefile". Similarly for unit tests (there are so many frameworks, which to choose?) What would make my day is a simple zipped dummy project with a dummy unit tests using sbt. Do you know whether such thing exists?

  I have made a small log service that i want to publish to a subdomain on my webhotel. I make the wcf service and test it locally - no problem. I then go to the [Build] menu and choose [Publish], type in my FTP location and publishes it to the location. No problems. The problem arise when i need to use it, i try to navigate to the .svc file but gets this error: This collection already contains an address with scheme http. • Rails routing/polymorphism issue - how to model the following

  Hi all, I have an app where a 'user' belong to a 'client' or a 'vendor' (and client and vendor has_many users). In the admin namespace, I want to administer these users - so an admin would choose a client or a vendor, then nav to that client's or vendor's users. My question is, short of making the user model polymorphic, how could I model/route this? Here is what I have in terms of routing: map.namespace :admin do |admin| admin.resources :clients admin.resources :vendors end I know I could do something like: map.namespace :admin do |admin| admin.resources :clients do |client| client.resources :users admin.resources :vendors do |vendor| vendor.resources :users end end But the above would definitely need me to treat the User as polymorphic. • Which build tool to teach?

  While similiar questions have been asked, this one's focused on which is best/easiest to teach. I'm giving a weekly tutorial at my university focusing on data structures and algorithms. Fromn time to time I introduce tools which may prove helpful in future projects like JUnit, Mercurial, Eclipse etc.. I plan to show them some kind of build tool but I'm not sure which one to choose. I by myself have very little knowledge about build tools, except a little experience in using make. It's more the concept of a build tool I want to show them, not a special tool per se. Which would be the most easiest/future proof/whatever tool to show them? I've read a little bit about Gradle, which looks nice, but so far I think Ant could be a good choice (it's a Java course I'm giving).

• why do we all learn and study java or .net or why java or .net are popular?

  My question to be clear is why do we all need to learn java or .net(C#) , still java or .net are more popular than delphi or c++ and even there are lot of resource,articles or books compared to c++ or delphi about java and .net. However, I heard majority, if I am right about 80% of software are developed using c++ or delphi in the software industry. so, why do we bother about other languages specifically about the cosmopolitan languages such as java or .net in education as well as for job interview. Although, still I know the elegance of java and .net, their safe code execution,fully objected oriented behavior ...etc, but still according to the statics they are not preferred on software develpement as a primary language mainly because of their execution time compared to c++ or delphi. So my question are why do they choose them for jobs or educational purpose and everything else? why do we lose our time learning these language if we are forced to use the other languages in the industry?

• Drop down select to change a second drop down select automatically

  I have a webpage where I have a form with several areas to input text and two drop down select options countries is the first one and depending in witch country is chosen the second should display the estates for that country to choose. my page connects to my db from where it gets the countries and estates.... I have a table with the country names and one table for each country estates. so all I'm trying to do is making it change the states to choose from automatically depending witch country got selected with out summiting the form since that enters a new entry to another table in my db. I seen that using javascript is the way to go but can't get it to work in my case since I don't want to be sent to another page or summit the form. here is part of my code any help will be greatly appreciated. • Use ASP.NET Profile or not?

  I need to store a few attributes of an authenticated user (I am using Membership API) and I need to make a choice between using Profiles or adding a new table with UserId as the PK. It appears that using Profiles is quick and needs less work upfront. However, I see the following downsides: The profile values are squished into a single ntext column. At some point in the future, I will have SQL scripts that may update user's attributes. Querying a ntext column and trying to update a value sounds a little buggy to me. If I choose to add a new user specific property and would like to assign a default for all the existing users, would it be possible? My first impression has been that using profiles may cause maintainance headaches in the long run. Thoughts?
