• 301 redirects mirrored domain

  I'm redesigning a site for a friend on my localhost. His old site is an .asp based site and we're replacing it with a WordPress site on LAMP hosting. The old site sits on domain A and also has another domain, domain B parked on top of it mirroring it. Google has picked up domain B for most of his search engine results and yahoo and bing etc have picked up domain A. The plan is to 301 redirect the the old pages of his site on domain A to the new WordPress versions and park domain B on top of it like before. My question is, will this work, if not what would be a better way to approach it? We'd prefer not to lose any of the search engine listings in the redesign, and the search engines don't appear to have penalized him for duplicate content. Thanks very much in advance!

• After changing web host, I get a 'file does not exist' error

  I run a WordPress blog, and have recently changed web hosts. When changing web hosts, I copied all files and exported/imported the database etc as explained by lots of tutorials found easily on Google. The blog home page works fine. What goes wrong: When I click on any link from the home page, the browser gets stuck in a redirect loop. Looking at the error log, I see: File does not exist: /usr/local/apache/htdocs/index.php The directory /usr doesn't even exist for my website - so perhaps this is looking for a file that was present using my old Web Host and is no longer present with my new web host? What is going on, and how might I resolve it?

• boxes adding up to 100% of the browser [closed]

  I want to have 2 boxes right next to each other, one with a fixed width, and another with a width that will change based on the size of the browser. The box has overflow:auto, and I'm trying to get the first box to act as a side bar that will follow you down the page. • How to Remove Extensions From, and Force the Trailing Slash at the End of URLs?

  Example of current file structure: example.com/foo.php example.com/bar.html example.com/directory/ example.com/directory/foo.php example.com/directory/bar.html example.com/cgi-bin/directory/foo.cgi I would like to remove HTML, PHP and CGI extensions from, and then force the trailing slash at the end of URLs. So, it could look like this: example.com/foo/ example.com/bar/ example.com/directory/ example.com/directory/foo/ example.com/directory/bar/ example.com/cgi-bin/directory/foo/ I am very frustrated because I've searched for 17 hours straight for solution and visited more than a few hundred pages on various blogs and forums. I'm not joking. So I think I've done my research. Here is the code that sits in my .htaccess file right now: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.html -f RewriteRule ^(([^/]+/)*[^./]+)/$ $1.html RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(\.[a-zA-Z0-9]|/)$ RewriteRule (.*)$ /$1/ [R=301,L] As you can see, this code only removes .html (and I'm not very happy with it because I think it could be done a lot simpler). I can remove the extension from PHP files when I rename them to .html through .htaccess, but that's not what I want. I want to remove it straight. This is the first thing I don't know how to do. The second thing is actually very annoying. My .htaccess file with code above, adds .html/ to every string entered after example.com/directory/foo/. So if I enter example.com/directory/foo/bar (obviously /bar doesn't exist since foo is a file), instead of just displaying message that page is not found, it converts it to example.com/directory/foo/bar.html/, then searches for a file for a few seconds and then displays the not found message. This, of course, is bad behavior. So, once again, I need the code in .htaccess to do the following things: Remove .html extension Remove .php extension Remove .cgi extension Force the trailing slash at the end of URLs Requests should behave correctly (no adding trailing slashes or extensions to strings if file or directory doesn't exist on server) Code should be as simple as possible I would very much appreciate any help. • Should I prevent search engines indexing tag/category pages?

  On my site, I currently have no special rules for search engines. It is a blog, statically generated using a Python program. When I search for some of my articles on Google, there is usually a tag or category page included in the results. Sometimes it even ranks ahead of the article itself. Obviously, as these links aren't always going to have the article on them, this aren't the results I want people to click on. So, I'm thinking of setting noindex on these pages. Is there any possible downside to doing so? Is this possible to do via robots.txt, or do I have to add it to all the relevant templates? All I can find for robots.txt are ways to stop the search engine crawling those pages, which isn't what I want - while I don't want them indexed, it's still the only surefire way to find all my blog posts.

• Is there a better way to have a two column website with header and footer, equal height columns and stretchy column widths? [closed]

  I wrote a website a while ago that is a little messy in how it does things. I used this CSS template and this equal height columns trick. I have not one but two container divs and I can't remember what they're doing. So I'm thinking of re structuring the thing from scratch, and possibly making use of the more "semantic" html5 tags like <nav> and so on at the same time. The question is: is there a better way to achieve a site structure with these properties: 2 equal height main columns (with widths as percentages of the available real estate, not explicitly stated) both a header and footer element that stretch the whole width of the total of the two main columns That allows the use of semantic html5 tags instead of meaningless divs

• High quality/performance shared hosting (in northern Europe)

  I work as a web developer on almost all levels. However, my typical customer is a 1-5 guys running some sort of consulting business. They have (or want) a web page with some kind of CMS so the can perform most (or all) editing themselves. I normally opt for Concrete5 as my default CMS because it's the most user friendly (and free) CMS I have found. My good recurring customers I host on my own server as a service, but I need a good host for the customers where I want to deliver a product and not be responsible for whatever may happen in the future. However, I still struggle with hosting! Experience shows that the typical ~1$ shared hosting is waaay to slow to run concrete5 smoothly, and a VPS is out of the question because I don't want to maintain it. So, where can I find as fast (from northern Europe), reliable, shared host where I can put a site and don't have to worry about the server going down or being unmaintained. I expect this should cost around $10-$20 but I'm open to all kinds of suggestions because different customers have different budgets.

• Is it possible for a web-server to send more files than requested for, and have the browser accept them?

  I've created a basic web server for a school project, and it serves static content without a problem. I thought of having the server parse all htm/html files for links to .js/.css/image files, and send these files to the client without these files being requested by the client later. eg. The browser requests: index.htm The server responds with intex.htm and image.jpg I modified the server to send two distinct http responses for a "GET /index.html HTTP1.1" (one for the html page and one for the image), but the browser ended up requesting the image when it was good and ready. Is there any way to bypass this? (use a multipart response, perhaps) Will these files be accepted by most browsers, or will they be rejected for security reasons?

• Enabling/disabling proftpd accounts with PHP and WHM

  I have a VPS with WHM/CPanel which is being used just by me. It's utilizing proftpd. I'd like to, via a PHP script, disable/enable a specific FTP account. I've done this by having PHP call a bash script which removes/adds the user account line to /etc/proftpd/USERNAME password file. However, in order to do this I have to give other write rights to /etc/proftpd/USERNAME. This isn't ideal, and I'd be willing to do it another way. It also seems like WHM is automatically resetting these permissions on a regular basis. Does anybody have any ideas on a better way to deal with this?

• Creating a backup - Rsync - Connection refused (111)

  I am trying to create a backup of my website for free. I just want to have a backup of my website, including not only all files and the configuration but also the databases. I mean, a full backup. If it can be done automatically, it would be better. I feel there are better ways than using the cpanel to achieve that (actually, I believe sometimes web hosters does not have any cpanel). I read the following on how to do it: Automatically mirror the entire contents and configuration of your main server to a secondary backup server on a completely separate network in a different data centre. Use RSync, FXP, cPanel voodoo, or whatever method you wish to automate syncing. That is why I installed Rsync Daemon which is an alternative to SSH for remote backups. I configured it but the test went wrong. • Access denied 403 errors after migrating my site

  I've recently migrated my Joomla site from one shared hosting to another with Hostgator. GWT notified me about many 403 access denied pages. I've checked with Firebug too, and even though browser is displaying full page correctly but http return is 403. I've checked the home page but it's correctly returing 200 response. The same is shown by Fetch as Google in GWT(pasted this in the bottom). The site is 3 years old and I regularly do such migrations. I've copied the files and database "AS IS". I've even cleared all the caches but no luck. There is only one change: previously the site was primary domain but now it's add-on one. What could be the issue? This is how Googlebot fetched the page. • Robots meta tag with "noimageindex"

  I have some doubt regarding noimageindex value in meta robots tag. If I add this tag on my page say http://www.example.com/somepage/someaction.php and on that page the images are served from another page say http://www.exampleimg.com. Then will the tag has meaning. I mean to say will the images will be ignored by bots? Or exampleimg is not affected by that tag. And all images will be indexed? Note: We want to stop indexing of the images on that particular page.

• Google shows "search instead for" when searching for our website

  Our website is new and the name is similar (only one letter different than another website) completely different type and company though. searching for xxxxxA works OK in Google and we find relatively good results. However searching xxxxxA.com finds results for the other website and gives us the following options: Showing results for xxxxxE.com Search instead for xxxxxA.com (hyperlink when clicked then it is correctly searching for our site) Questions: Do we need to contact Google to correct this and if yes how ? if not will it be corrected automatically when the site becomes more popular and what is the process? How do we make the process quicker?

• What's the difference between my nameserver and CName settings?

  I have purchased a domain name(mxsoup.net) through GoDaddy, and it is just parked. In order to set up my custom URL for my SourceAudio site, they give me the following instructions: In order to host your site at a your own URL, we need you to set up some DNS records to point your URL to us. Specifically, we need two CNAME references, one for 'www.mxsoup.net' and one for 'secure.mxsoup.net', both of which should point to 'web2.sourceaudio.com'. But the rep on the phone at GoDaddy said that my site is hosted at HostMonster.com, and therefore I need to talk to them to accomplish this(which is possibly true, but my business owner says he hasn't purchased hosting for this particular domain, yet he does have some other sites in his hostmonster hosting acct.) My GoDaddy account shows that my nameservers are pointing at NS1.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and NS2.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and I can edit those. But is this the same as setting up the CNAME as described above? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Question on business connections and page rank?

  I just want to ask this question to get a yes no answer on something that I've been wondering on lately. So regarding how there are countless numbers of sites now that use the no-follow; making it harder to get ranking for your page if your website information might be something useful and will get traffic but maybe isn't something that your business connections share content of; but I am trying to find out if the benefit to having a bunch of say "likes" to your facebook page, but all the connection to your website's content isn't passing any benefit to your main page. So are you then competing with your own website in regards to SERPs to your facebook page and that of your home page. Am I correct on this; that if you start having your facebook page doing real good as far as connections and likes (helping bump up your facebook PageRank) but if you have links on your page with certain optimized keywords, that there is no benefit to your website (other than people getting to your facebook page, and then more likely to click to your page). Hope I explained it well what I am asking. Just wanted to get a better picture of this to know what I want to focus on as far as how I'll be linking to my desired landing pages in the future.
