• Pros and Cons of Creating an Internal Cerificate Authority

  What are the pros and cons of spinning up an internal certificate authority (primarily Windows 2003 CA)? We have the need to encypt server-server traffic on a project that has 20+ certificates. We could buy certs from Verisign, but I was thinking that an internal CA might be a better long term solution. So I was looking to the community to provide a pros/cons list of what we might gain (or lose) by hosting our own CA? Thanks in advance for the help.

• Exposing server uptime a potential security vulnerability?

  I run a browser-based game and as part of a page with a bunch of game statistics, I have the server uptime listed. It's currently at 177 days and so someone mentioned to me that I shouldn't do this because a long uptime indicates the kernel is old and therefore missing security updates. This certainly sounds logical, but I searched around and couldn't find any evidence to support it. So I'm just wondering, is this indeed something I should not have exposed?

  Amazon web services recently introduced a free tier, where you basically get free stuff to try out AWS and run tiny sites and projects. Basically it's free as long as you remain below a certain limit of bandwidth, disk storage etc. Since going over the limits can quickly become quite expensive (for a hobbyist) I would like some recommendations or suggestions about which AMI's I can run on the free tier, for the purpose of trying out Ruby on Rails and/or Django.

  I'm reviewing Azure web role logs and there's output from ipconfig /all IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.61.145.37(Preferred) . Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.254.0. Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Monday, September 24, 2012 12:26:00 PM. Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, October 31, 2148 6:55:12 PM. you see, the lease expires in year 2148 but my VM will likely not run for more than one month - when I deploy the new version of my code I first deploy it to new VMs, then switch traffic, then release the new VMs. In general such usage pattern is normal - VMs typically live from several dozen minutes to several weeks on Azure. I suspect the lease that long will cause problems on the internal Azure network sooner or later. Is such long DHCP lease okay or is it likely a misconfiguration?

• saving excel files to file paths or directories with special characters

  I am unable to get excel 2010 beta to save to a directory which contains square brackets. I have to save elsewhere and copy in. Is there any workaround? Was this a problem with older versions? I realize that I could manually change the directory names, but I didn't want to forgo a long standing organization scheme for the sake of one program if possible to avoid the problem.

  I am using an open source application (conkeror) which is configured via a file containing javascript. Any issues with the javascript is printed to the console. This is fine under Linux as all the information is shown as long as the it is started from a shell. However, under Windows none of the information is show even when started from a shell. Is there a way to make this information displayed in the shell or to capture it in say a file?

What i need is basically a batch processor for audio which does it, and names the slices numerically. i'm on os x and found Audio Splitter, the shortest possible sample length with it is 1 second though, too long for my purpose.   I am running the command time 7zr a -mx=9 sample.7z sample.log to gauge how long it takes to compress a file larger than 1GB. The results I get are as follows. real 10m40.156s user 17m38.862s sys 0m5.944s I have a basic understanding of the difference but don't understand how this plays a role in the time in takes to compress the file. For example should I be looking at real or user + sys?

  I'm trying to generate a username using a single name field in excel which has the person's first name and last name. I'm open to what the username would be, as long as its intuitive for the user. I used to put my previous notebook (running windows 7) to hibernate directly in order to save battery but I can't do the same in Mac Os.   How can I limit the time spent on the computer or force a log out from a Windows 7 machine? I used to use Windows Steady State to limit users (kids) from being on too long but SteadyState does not work with Windows 7 Home Premium and is discontinued. Is there a way to set this up in Windows 7 where it will kick off a user after a set time? Or perhaps there's an alternative program that can help limit the time one user is at the computer.

• How do I change a VMWare 1.x server's guest boot order?

  I have 4 VMs on a Linux host, call them A, B, C, D running on Z. I really don't care when A and B come up, but I would like to make sure that D comes up before C. I believe that in VMWare 2.x it's possible to change the boot order. Is this possible in 1.x as well? Is this done in /etc/vmware/vm-list? I see that there are a number of VMs listed there, including some that have long since been deleted.

  Hi, I use the built in DVD burner from OS X. Whenever I burn a disk, it is verified after burning. Nice, but I am usually quicker in verifying myself with a bit more human, maybe more error prone process... Just takes too long! Is there a way to turn this off in OS X? Thanks!
