• GMail API for a small app (Rails? Javascript? PHP?)

  I want to create an app that accesses the GMail API, but I'm finding that it isn't as simple as I thought it might be. I'm hoping somebody in the community here might have some experience working with one of these API's and could not only recommend the right solution, but also show me to some tutorials or examples that could help me get up and running. Here are some of the requirements of this app: Preferably in Rails or Javascript or even PHP. I am open to other technologies as well, but hope they'd be easy to implement. Connects to gmail via Oauth Can read who emails have been sent to and received from. Basically would like to perform some analytics on who emails are sent to, when and how frequently. I've read that one reason why this isn't easy, and why there isn't an official javascript API provided by gmail, is that google is concerned it's going to make their service less performant for their users.

• Whats the right program for me?

  I would like to learn C++ so I can get a job in the game industry, but there are so many options it a little confusing. I know most of you will say I should read up on C++ before attempting to program it but I learn best by doing things rather then reading. That being said I don't understand some of the thing suggested on other questions, because I've read a few trying to find whats right for me, so putting things in the simplest terms would be helpful. I've been making a couple of games 2d using gamemaker and if theres a C++ equivalent that would be perfect, but if not possible I would like an IDE that allows me to easily continue making 2d games, and is fairly simple to learn. Having a 2d sprite editor would be a nice plus but I can understand if its not every thing I want in one program

• Restrict user to folder (not root) on VSFTPD in Ubuntu

  I am a new Linux (Ubuntu) user and have a VPS where I am setting up a backup FTP service. I have followed this guide, which I have managed to do correctly and it works. I have two users (user1 and user2) with the same directory /home/users/test. user1 can read/write and user2 can only read. This works OK. When the users log in, they go straight into the correct directory /home/users/test, but they can navigate back down to the home directory, which I do not want to happen. I cannot seem to find out how to not allow this, and have them not be able to navigate back to the /home/ or /home/test/ directories.

• How do I connect the seams between my terrain?

  I'm using c++ and D3D11 and I'm trying to create a (pretty) large terrain, lets say 4096x4096, maybe larger. I've got the basics of terrain creation and already split it up into chunks. But, when I'm rendering them (every chunk has its own vertex and index buffer, as well as its own heightmap), there are still little pieces missing between them. I read a lot about LOD(Level Of Detail) and GMM(Geometry Mipmap), but I can't really implement the theory I read. At the moment, it looks like this: I could really use some help, everything is welcome. If you have some good tutorials on any of this, please share them.

  I was looking for a way to share my application created files through Whatsapp. I found we can chat using custom URL scheme provided by whatsapp : https://www.whatsapp.com/faq/iphone/23559013. But, to share files of my app, read that I have to use DicumentIntercationController. So, is there any smaple available? Also, when I read about apple docs, it says, "Create an instance of the UIDocumentInteractionController class for each file you want to interact with" (https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/FileManagement/Conceptual/DocumentInteraction_TopicsForIOS/Articles/PreviewingandOpeningItems.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40010410-SW1). So is it necessary to create instance for each file? I just want to share the files as and when i receive it through my service to my app. Thanks for the help in advance.

  I have been studying design patterns and came accross the fly weight pattern. I have been trying to see opportunities to use the pattern in my applications but I am having trouble seeing how to use it. Also, what are some signs that a fly weight pattern is being used when I read other peoples code? According to the definition it says: Use sharing to support large numbers of fine-grained objects efficiently. If I read it right Dictionaries and Hashtables could be instances of fly weights is this correct? Thanks in advance.

• OpenGL Beginner question

  I'm new to OpenGL programming, but I can't find a good book to read or a tutorial, I've tried reading through the superbible or whatever its name is but it's kind of complicated to me. The tutorial at http://duriansoftware.com/joe/An-intro-to-modern-OpenGL.-Chapter-2.3:-Rendering.html is pretty ok but it doesn't cover what I need mostly, which is opengl math etc (such as projection matrix, view matrix, and so on). I'm fairly OK at C(++) (3+ years experience, I don't know if you would call that "good") What i basically want to do with OpenGL is, make a simple game (prefer 2D as a start and not 3D). Please suggest a good EBook to read and learn from.

  I'm relatively new to Ubuntu and I'm trying to figure out how to play DVDs. I've read through a lot of forums, and got to the one asking how to read encrypted DVDs. I was able to do the first step and installed libdvdread4, but when I got to the second step of installing libdvdcss, I got what amounted to error messages. This is the command I ran: sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh Is there something important that I should know? As in, probably something basic that I don't know because I'm new...?

• C++ developer looks for book(s) about Android apps & widgets (& services etc.) [on hold]

  I'm senior C++ developer, I have also programmed professionally j2me some years. I'd like to make some apps and widgets for Android and I'd like to read up a bit on this new java stuff Android is using. I have (of course) checked out some tutorials and so but it seems I miss the basics, I can compile some stuff (read: examples) in eclipse but I just don't know how to, for example, add a service or what an 'intent' is, why my widget isn't called but successfully launches the main app when clicked and so on. So, what is a really good book for someone that is a developer but mostly need the hard facts about developing something specific like Android apps & widgets? Thanks a bunch!

• System.getProperty("user.dir") cannot get my project root path ,but the path which my eclipse is located

  As the title goes , I have class named GetException.java,inside it ,I read a xml file in a static code block like(Because this document is shared): static{ ... document = db.parse(new File(System.getProperty("user.dir")+"/src/exception/ExceptionCode.xml")); ... } To test if the file path is correct, I write a main function just inside GetException.java, it proves that the path is correct ,xml file can be read successfully. My project root dir is "/home/wuchang/workspace/MongodbI". But When this Class is loaded from other class,such as I called one of its static functions , it reports the error message: /home/mrs/??/eclipse/src/exception/ExceptionCode.xml (No such file or directory) /home/mrs/??/eclipse/ is actually my eclipse installation directory.So , I wander how System.getProperty("user.dir") returned the eclipse installation directory to me ,instead of my project root directory?

• Want to make RTS strategy game, good starting point...?

  everybody! I find this community because I did research about game developing topics. So I decide to register on this community and ask for your opinion. I am not begineer in computer stuffs, and I know logic of programming language. I have little knowlegde of C, C++, Started to learn C#...but I was always oriented about other areas of IT. Amateur for game making but not in IT general! I am interested to make RTS strategy video game, isometric camera view (like PC GAME COMMANDOS for example)...so I started to read many books about DirectX, XNA, OpenGL, C#, AI programming...so I want to know where is good starting point for making this game genre. I want to use C# for this project, not C++, since I always had trouble with it, because it is too complicated. I see good oportunity for learning C#, since it has more object-oriented concept, with much less code and easy readible code for writing. Beside of that I know that C++ is the more powerful language until today. So I want to use DirectX and C# for my project. But it will required more time for sure, to learn it. I have trouble with finding books for c# & DirectX (I found just one), but in every next book, it is programming in c++! I read many web sites and they mentioned Slim DX, and in generaly, other articles which I read tells that it is possible to make good game with combination c# and directX, but...I don't have enough information about all this stuffs, so I became confused! It is really hard to have wish to learn c++ from scratch, since I started c# and I like it really...I don't try OpenGL, but I am already familiar with DirectX (some beginning stuffs), and I think that it is good and interesting. So, I decide to choose between maybe Unity3d and XNA first. XNA...hm, it sound that it is not bad solution, but I heard that it is already overcome technology, and I think that it is better to wait with XNA, until I try to make something with DirectX and C#, at first. But I dont know it is possible to make strategy game in XNA?! Maybe I am wrong. I also, find Unity 3D game engine and I find that I could programming there in C#, but many all examples are written in Javascript (Digital tutors videos)...But I generaly have wish to learn it too, because it allows to export games to mobile phones, there a lot of documentations, it is free, etc... I want to find best way to learn C# and DirectX, and make this game, but I dont know if it's possible to combine?! But maybe is good to first try Unity and XNA, because I am beginner?! Thank you all! • C# SOCKS proxy service for HTTP requests

  I'm trying to build a service that will forward HTTP requests from agents like a browser to the Tor service. Problem is, the Tor service only accepts SOCKS4a connections. So my solution is to listen for HTTP requests, get the URL they're requesting, and make a request via Tor with the help of the Starksoft.Net.Proxy library. Then return the response. The library kind of works, but I'm not happy. It returns HTTP headers with the response and it can't handle images. So the responses are messed up. How could I improve my code?   Problem: I have many-to-many association between two entities A and B. I set A entity as an owner of their relationship(inverse=true is on A's collection in b.hbm.xml). When i delete an A entity, corresponding records in join table are deleted. When i delete an B entity, corresponding records in join table are not deleted (integrity violation exception). -- Let's consider some very simple example: class A{ Set<B> bset=new HashSet<B>(); //... } class B{ Set<A> aset=new HashSet<A>(); //... } File a.hbm.xml [m-to-m mappings only]: <set name="bset" table="AB"> <key name="a_id"/> <many-to-many column="b_id" class="B"/> </set> File b.hbm.xml [m-to-m mappings only]: <set name="aset" table="AB" inverse="true"> <key name="b_id"/> <many-to-many column="a_id" class="A"/> </set> Database relations: A(id,...) B(id,...) AB(a_id,b_id) Suppose that we have some records in AB joint table. For example: AB = {(1,1),(1,2)} where AB= { (a_id , b_id) | ... ... } -- Situation 1 - works probably because A is owner of AB relationship: A a=aDao.read(1); //read A entity with id=1 aDao.delete(a); //delete 'a' entity and both relations with B-entities Situation 2 - doesn't work: B b=bDao.read(1); //read B entity with id=1 bDao.delete(b); //foreign key integrity violation On the one hand, this is somehow logical to me, because the A entity is responsible for his relation with B. But, on the other hand, it is not logical or at least it is not orm-like solution that I have to explicitly delete all records in join table where concrete B entity appears, and then to delete the B entity, as I show in situation 3: Situation 3 - works, but it is not 'elegant': B b=bDao.read(1); Set<A> aset=b.getA(); //get set with A entities Iterator i=aset.iterator(); //while removes 'b' from all related A entities //while breaks relationships on A-side of relation (A is owner) while(i.hasNext()){ A a=i.next(); a.bset.remove(b); //remove entity 'b' from related 'a' entity aDao.update(a); //key point!!! this line breaks relation in database } bDao.delete(b); //'b' is deleted because there is no related A-entities -- So, my question: is there any more convenient way to delete no-owner entity (B in my example) in bidirectional many-to-many association and all of his many-to-many relations from joint table?
