• How important is it that you know the C++ standard?

  I did try searching, but I did not see a similar question (either that or my search terminology was incorrect - if so, feel free to close). I am an avid user of SO, and I notice that there are lots of references to the C++ standard in discussions and answers - and I have to admit, I have never read this particular document, the language makes my eyes hurt... So, the question is, can a C++ developer really code for a living without ever having read this document? Is it really important for us mere mortals who are not in the business of writing compilers?

• Can't mount data DVD using 12.04

  I cannot mount a data DVD using Ubuntu 12.04. I can read the DVD using a different OS, so the DVD is not the problem. I can read other CDs using Ubuntu. • How can I backup files on /etc using Deja Dup? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I open Deja Dup as root? I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I'm trying to setup Deja Dup to backup the files for several users (/home) and /etc but as it runs as myself, there are many files it cannot read and therefore cannot backup. I want to try running Deja Dup as root as then it should be able to read and backup all files. I've seen some other info about how to set up a particular App to run as root, so I guess I should try that.

• Twitter's new approach of third party application? How would you see this move as developer.... especially you plan to build a twitter client.

  Just today morning I have read news that twitter has issued a warning to developers not to make any new third party client, the official announcement can be read here. As a programmer, how do you see this move of twitter? Does it seems that they want to standardize the behavior of third party client or they don't want any new client in favor of the default clients they have made? What if anybody wants to create a new client? Is there any guidelines that-if followed- ensure that we can create a new mobile client? Or we should stop thinking about it? What are the option for the developers who want to build some clients for twitter? I can realize that I have asked too many questions, but I still think that there can be one common answer.

• Choosing a mobile advertising mediator over going it alone

  We have finished our first game for IOS/Android. We would like to give it away adding ads to it. I have been reading a lot about the subject but it is a bit overwhelming for starters. From what I read, it seems there are some important points to have into consideration: 1) Do as much localization as you can (target your audience with ads they could be interested for the zone they live in). 2) Do not over advertise in your application. At this moment we have decided to go with AdMob. It seems an easy option to setup for beginners and have a good set of ad networks. My question is, will we earn less for example for iAds using adMob than implementing iAds without a mediator? Are adMob paying less than others (this is what I remember for some artilces I read)?. It would be nice to hear from people with experience on this to let us light our way a bit.

• Is there a good book or articles to learn about 2D Game Design and Effects?

  I am not looking for a read how to develop games and how to implement one. I am looking for a general about possible effects in 2D Games and about general design of modern 2D gaming. I have programmed several smaller games over the years and also read books like "Golden Rules of Game Programming" by Martin Bronwlo. So I know how to implement games. What I am looking for are 2 things: Finishing touches such as effects like explosions, particles etc. Not how to make them, but how to design them so it looks right and cool. How to make a 2D game feel "more right" so that users get a satisfying gaming experience. I played a lot of 2D games but I could use some more advice.

• Cannot connect to Internet on 11.04 using BSNL EVDO Prithvi Card

  I cannot connect to Internet using BSNL EVDO Prithvi data card. Went through some websites that offered help, installed wvdial package and tried again, but was unsuccessful. I have Read that, Ubuntu 11.04 automatically detects Data Card, You only need to configure "Network Manager" and it will work, I did exactly that, but the result is same. The OS detects the data card, and the presence of network , but it cannot login. I have read in some forums that Ubuntu 11.04 does not have support for BSNL EVDO Prithvi, is it true? I re-checked the "User ID" and "Password". Its working on Windows. Please help me fix this.

  I have bunch of directories containing the file with the same name. I want to move these files to another directory and at the same time renaming them with the directory name so that they are distinguished and are not over-written. EDIT: All the directories are in the same directory. Destination is one directory on the system which could be anything. We read directory and read file form it and rename it exactly as the directory name and put it to the destination.   I have the last version of Chrome 5.0.xx. and my Ubuntu is also of the last version 10.04. What I usually do is to open two instances of Chrome and divide the screen into two parts. In one part my son watches cartoons in Youtube and in the other part I just read some news. So, sometimes, when I close some pages of the news I have being read the video which was being played in youtube crashes and immediately stops. I need to refresh youtube page and see the video again.   I have designed a website that accepts re-sellers and actually the concept of this website is having local re-sellers for each province (or should we say branches). I have designed this website in a way that anybody who has a domain, can point to our website (a record or cname). well most of the website content are the same, the only difference is that re-sellers website doesn't have some items on the main menu and may have some small descriptions of their own branch in some pages. I read that Google may ban websites with duplicate content (or which are significantly similar). I want to know will this be a problem for me? If yes, what else can I do? we have had considered asking our reseller to use iframe that loads our website but wanted that each reseller can have its own SEO and try harder but what I read about this duplicate thing worries me.

  I've read a lot about how GoTo was considered harmful and removed for other control structures that were more intuitive. Does anyone have a good example / sample of goto spaghetti code? Preferrably, the sample code should be difficult to follow, but realtively easy when rewritten into more conventional control structures. I know I could try to write you some of my own, but I've never really used goto and don't think I could due justice to the headaches its abuse can lead to. I want this for didactic purposes to train junior developers on what to avoid. Mainly, to point to illustrate how OOP is taking the same idea to next logical consequence. EDIT: by good example I mean code that is terrible to read and abuses it, rather than code that uses goto for reasonable optimization

• Find angle for projectile to meet target in parabolic arc

  I'm making a thing that launches projectiles in 2D. Its projectiles are fired with a set initial velocity, and are only affected by gravity. Assuming that its target is within range, and that there aren't any obstacles, how would my thing find the appropriate angle at which to launch its projectile (in radians)? The equation for this is found here: Wikipedia: Angle Required to Hit Coordinate Sadly, I'm not a physicist (a.k.a. can't read smart people math) and am having a hard time reading its breakdown. • Ubuntu boots into terminal

  When I turn on my computer (a CR-48), I keep loading tty1. I have tried xstart, and all I get is: Fatal server error: Could not create lock file in /tmp/.tX0-lock When I attempted to make the directory (both sudo and not), I received these two errors: sudo: Can't open /var/lib/sudo/don/tty2: Read-only file system (I've gotten other tty's for different virtual terminals) mkdir: cannot create directory '/tmp/tX0-lock': Read-only file system Before I got to the only terminal state, I had the computer moving a few files from a network server to the computer, I put it to sleep without stopping the transfers, and started the computer again away from my home network, and attempted to stop the transfers, the computer than restarted. Running sudo reboot puts me right back in the virtual terminal, and I can't get into any sort of x application.

  Many people have opinions or want to give feedback about Ubuntu. If they are simple bugs with a crash or display corruption, that's fine, they can file in Launchpad. But, comments about the design or concept of the system are more problematic. They come up all over the place, such as "Some Unity feedback" in other places that are not really about Unity. Ideally the answer will be a place where the comments will actually be read by the design team will tend to encourage people to read the existing comments and not post the same thing again and again perhaps will tend to bubble up good solutions rather than strange ideas will not be annoying to people who are trying to use that place for something else

• How to speed up rsync/tar of large Maildir

  I have a very large Maildir I am copying to a new machine ( over 100 BaseT ) with rsync. The progress is slow. VERY SLOW. Like 1 MB/s slow. I think this is because it is a lot of small files that are being read in an order that essentially is random with respect to where the blocks are stored on disk, causing a massive seek storm. I get similar results when trying to tar the directory. Is there a way to get rsync/tar to read in disk block order, or otherwise overcome this problem?
