  • Perl, treat string as binary byte array

    In Perl, is it appropriate to use a string as a byte array containing 8-bit data? All the documentation I can find on this subject focuses on 7-bit strings. For instance, if I read some data from a binary file into $data my $data; open FILE, "<", $filepath; binmode FILE; read FILE $data 1024; and I want to get the first byte out, is substr($data,1,1) appropriate? (again, assuming it is 8-bit data) I come from a mostly C background, and I am used to passing a char pointer to a read() function. My problem might be that I don't understand what the underlying representation of a string is in Perl.

  • Separating null byte separated UNICODE C string.

    First off, this is NOT a duplicate of: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1911053/turn-a-c-string-with-null-bytes-into-a-char-array , because the given answer doesn't work when the char *'s are Unicode. I think the problem is that because I am trying to use Unicode and thus wchar_t instead of char, the length of each character is different and thus, this doesn't work (it does in non-unicode): char *Buffer; // your null-separated strings char *Current; // Pointer to the current string // [...] for (Current = Buffer; *Current; Current += strlen(Current) + 1) printf("GetOpenFileName returned: %s\n", Current); Does anyone have a similar solution that works on Unicode strings?     What's a good way to construct an LPCWSTR on WinCE 6? I'd like to find something similar to String.Format() in C#. My attempt is: OSVERSIONINFO vi; memset (&vi, 0, sizeof vi); vi.dwOSVersionInfoSize = sizeof vi; GetVersionEx (&vi); char buffer[50]; int n = sprintf(buffer, "The OS version is: %d.%d", vi.dwMajorVersion, vi.dwMinorVersion); ZDKSystem_ShowMessageBox(buffer, MESSAGEBOX_TYPE_OK); That ZDKSystem_ShowMessageBox refers to the ZDK for hacked Zunes available at: http://zunedevwiki.org This line of code works well with the message box call: ZDKSystem_ShowMessageBox(L"Hello Zune", MESSAGEBOX_TYPE_OK); My basic goal is to look at the exact version of WinCE running on a Zune HD to see which features are available (i.e. is it R2 or earlier?). Also I haven't seen any tags for the ZDK so please edit if something is more fitting!

  • Major performance difference between two Oracle database instances

    I am working with two instances of an Oracle database, call them one and two. two is running on better hardware (hard disk, memory, CPU) than one, and two is one minor version behind one in terms of Oracle version (both are 11g). Both have the exact same table table_name with exactly the same indexes defined. I load 500,000 identical rows into table_name on both instances. I then run, on both instances: delete from table_name; This command takes 30 seconds to complete on one and 40 minutes to complete on two. Doing INSERTs and UPDATEs on the two tables has similar performance differences. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could have such a drastic impact on performance between the two databases?

    I have a Visual Studio 2008 C++ application where I would like to copy all of program arguments in to a string separated by a whitespace " ". i.e., if my program is called as foo.exe \Program Files, then my folder string below would contain \Program Files Below is an example of what I'm doing now. I was wondering if there was a shorter or easier method of doing this.     I have the following data in my database (comma separated strings): "word, test, hello" "test, lorem, word" "test" ... etc How can I transform this data into a Dictionary whereby each string is separated into each distinct word together with the number of times that it occurs, i.e. {"test", 3}, {"word", 2}, {"hello", 1}, {"lorem", 1} I will have approximately 3000 rows of data in case this makes a difference to any solution offered. Also I am using .NET 3.5 (and would be interested to see any solution using linq)

    I've been looking for a simple java algorithm to generate a pseudo-random alpha-numeric string. In my situation it would be used as a unique session/key identifier that would "likely" be unique over 500K+ generation (my needs don't really require anything much more sophisticated) . Ideally I would be able to specify a length depending on my uniqueness needs. For example, a generated string of length 12 might look something like "AEYGF7K0DM1X". Answers: I like @Apocalisp and @erickson's answers equally well. The only downside to @Apocalisp's answer is it requires an apache class. Thanks to both for the help!

It gives the following error: "parseXML is not defined" var oSVG = document.getElementById("svg-wall").getSVGDocument(); var oNotes = oSVG.getElementById('notes'); oNotes.appendChild(parseXML(oFragment, document)); So my question is what am i doing wrong and is this even the best way to append a svg string to the dom?

  • C#: Efficiently search a large string for occurences of other strings

    Hi, I'm using C# to continuously search for multiple string "keywords" within large strings, which are = 4kb. This code is constantly looping, and sleeps aren't cutting down CPU usage enough while maintaining a reasonable speed. The bog-down is the keyword matching method. I've found a few possibilities, and all of them give similar efficiency. 1) http://tomasp.net/articles/ahocorasick.aspx -I do not have enough keywords for this to be the most efficient algorithm. 2) Regex. Using an instance level, compiled regex. -Provides more functionality than I require, and not quite enough efficiency. 3) String.IndexOf. -I would need to do a "smart" version of this for it provide enough efficiency. Looping through each keyword and calling IndexOf doesn't cut it. Does anyone know of any algorithms or methods that I can use to attain my goal?
