• Monitor status while using VNC

  So after connecting to a vnc server via vnc viewer to my desktop (remotely), Is it possible to know whether the monitor connected to the CPU is switched ON or not. Simply put, from command prompt how do you know whether monitor is ON/OFF from command line. Here, Basically I am bit worried about privacy as my monitor can be viewed by anyone while accessed remotely. Any solution? Obviously there is a option to switch off the monitor while starting the vnc server at remote side but I am looking for a better solution to control monitor(possible??) remotely. Thanks!

• Converting Powerpoint to PDF solutions?

  I asked a version of this question earlier, but I'm in need of other solutions, so this is a more pointed question. I'm in need of a server-based solution for converting ppt files to pdf files. This solution can either sit on the current web server as a console command-triggered service, it can be integrated into the C# code of the web all, or it can be it's own server. It also can't be based off of Libreoffice or Openoffice, as those two have problems converting SmartArt. I'm currently using Libreoffice. I've tried Powerpoint console commands combined with a PDF driver but I can't get that to work from C#. I've tried a .vbs script, but that briefly opens the powerpoint window.

• Auto-scaling EC2 Servers and Updating Code

  We've come to the point where we need to set up autoscaling for our web server and I'm unsure how to go about the process of scaling servers and updating the the existing code without remaking a new AMI and changing the autoscale config to use it. I've read a bit about people bundling the new code and uploading it to s3 and having new servers grab the bundle on boot up but that doesn't seem all that pleasant either. Currently the web app's files live in a git repo, and when we update the code, we push it to github, ssh into the web app and run a hook to bring down the latest code. So I was thinking that another option could be to just run that hook on an hourly or daily cron task. Unfortunately that doesn't cover everything type of update (for example new blog posts' images and such which aren't included in the git repo) but it's something. Could anyone provide some advice on what a common solution is or anything as to why my proposed solution is a bad idea? Thanks all

  I am hosting a server with 150 domain names (websites), each of the ssl's requere dedicated IP address. So server windows 2008, with 150 IP addressees and 150 websites. I need to have high availability solution. So thinking setting up AWS but ELB will not be a solution... and max IP's I can get per instance is 12 addresses. So what can I do to have all 150 sites hosted on one instance and be HA with instance in different availability zone.

• Making a class pseudo-immutable by setting a flag

  I have a java project that involves building some pretty complex objects. There are quite a lot (dozens) of different ones and some of them have a HUGE number of parameters. They also need to be immutable. So I was thinking the builder pattern would work, but it ends up require a lot of boilerplate. Another potential solution I thought of was to make a mutable class, but give it a "frozen" flag, a-la ruby. Here is a simple example: public class EqualRule extends Rule { private boolean frozen; private int target; public EqualRule() { frozen = false; } public void setTarget(int i) { if (frozen) throw new IllegalStateException( "Can't change frozen rule."); target = i; } public int getTarget() { return target; } public void freeze() { frozen = true; } @Override public boolean checkRule(int i) { return (target == i); } } and "Rule" is just an abstract class that has an abstract "checkRule" method. This cuts way down on the number of objects I need to write, while also giving me an object that becomes immutable for all intents and purposes. This kind of act like the object was its own Builder... But not quite. I'm not too excited, however, about having an immutable being disguised as a bean however. So I had two questions: 1. Before I go too far down this path, are there any huge problems that anyone sees right off the bat? For what it's worth, it is planned that this behavior will be well documented... 2.   i am trying to link my ADFS to Office 365 in order to set up Single Sign On for Office 365. I am going over this blog post. at Step 5, i am supposed to run Powershell commands so i can connect the ADFS to Office 365. Set-MsolAdfscontext -Computer <AD FS server FQDN> Convert-MsolDomainToFederated -DomainName <domain name> i am unable to determine the FQDN for the ADFS server. i searched around a lot on the web, but was not able to locate the solution. i am just getting started with all configuration of ADFS and Office 365, but was not able to find out a solution. any answers?

• MySQL cluster: 20Tb x 3K tables

  Over the next 2-3 years we will be scaling up data collection for a project. As a result the amount of data will grow 10-fold. Our current MySQL installation can keep up with the 2Tb of data but for larger queries there is a fair amount of IOWait. Im investigating a migration to a clustered solution to spread out the IO but am wondering about NDB and what happens to data that doesn't get accessed very often. The impression I get from reading about MySQL cluster is that it relies on memory tables for most of the data. What happens with tables that don't get accessed very often (or at all)? And how does backup work? Can I use MYSQLDUMP or is there a better solution?

• Expendable, Redundant, Easily recoverable

  I am desperate at this point, I have been looking for "Big storage" solution for a while on my own and I can't find anything that would suite my needs. But now push came to shove. Current situation: I have about 6TB data storage (already full) - Drobo. Yesterday Drobo died on me and it put me into bad situation - I can't recover my data without buying another Drobo. From extensive research online I realized that Drobo is not the safest bet and by now it seems very poor choice. I ordered new Drobo to try to get my data back, however I don't want to be in the same situation later and continuing using Drobo promises this event to re-occur. What I am looking for: 1) Inexpensive setup. 2) Dynamically extendable - add more drives and/or replace a drive with bigger capacity. 3) Redundant - setup against 1-3 drive failure, will depend on total number of drives. For the sake of argument let's assume for every 4 drives one should be able to fail without data loss. 4) Easy data recovery - let's say unforeseen happens, I would like to be able to recover information without buying new tools or replacements - example: new Drobo. 5) Should be USB or Network Attach Storage 6) No demand on speed. Doesn't have to be fast, I am not doing video editing on the setup. However if option exists, would be nice to have a decent speed. After thoughts: I reviewed few options and FreeNAS looks nice, but it doesn't have #2 - Dynamic extendability. There are work around with Pools but it seems a bit complicated and unnecessary. More over it seems like data safety is a big question - saw some horror stories. Please advise on what options I have and what seems like an optimal solution (if any). I don't care if it has to be Windows or Linux box or any other OS and/or software that has to run on top, but simple solution is more attractive. Thank you! • Excel 'Data Matrix'-Font

  Is it possible in Excel to have a font that automatically generates a 'Data Matrix'-Code from a text string. (As it is possible for usual Barcodes) Would I perhaps have to use a Add-In, because the font isn't "linear" or "one-dimensional" as barcodes are? EDIT: I found a solution (using a pretty expensive software): I simply used "NiceLabel", which is capable of using XLS-Tables as databases. Then I generated the Codes (Could be Barcodes, QR-Codes, Data Matrix Codes) from the cells in Excel. This solution doesn't automatically generate a 2D-Code into an Excel-Cell but fits for my personal needs.

  Yesterday I’ve release an updated version of QueryUnit, the version 0.0.0.8. QueryUnit now supports AreNotEqual, Greater, and Less assertions and is more capable of managing strings results. I must say that I cannot live anymore without a proper Unit Testing of a BI solution. Just yesterday happened that one of the unit tests at a customer site failed showing a subtle situation where the release of a new version of custom application would have corrupted the source of BI data with a very low chance that someone would have noticed it before several days. It may happen when you have more the 15 systems that handles the data needed by your BI solution. The key message of this situation is “Trust No One”: if your data hasn’t passed quality testing it’s not trustable. Period.   I have been using VMWare on Windows for a long time. But after a long wait, I moved to VirtualBox on Ubuntu 11.10. I installed Ubuntu, 32 Bit, installed all available updates and installed Virtual Box. • Is there a way how to customize my keyboard layout in Xubuntu in a graphical way (by clicking)?

  Possible duplicate, but I really couldn't find a solution. I would like to adjust my US keyboard layout, e.g. to add possibility to type some special characters on combination of right Alt + another character, etc. Moreover, my arrow up is dead, so until I buy another keyboard, I'd like to use my right shift as my arrow up, ASAP. However, there seems to be no way how to edit my keyboard layout easily in Xubuntu :( I found no editor and I really don't want to spend years in some configuration files and terminal (not that I can't, but I really really don't want). KLE - the only editor I could find, but no installation guide, no package, no PPA, no idea how to make it working (and uninstallable if not needed one day) Editor in Ubuntu - apparently not present in Xubuntu I found several tutorials how to change the layout, but they all seems to be complicated and not easy to follow. I don't want to spend a weekend in terminal or so, I am looking for an app to launch, make some clicking, finish my work by hitting Save button and - done! Please, is there such solution? For humans?

• why only google related sites load using wireless network

  I have a wireless internet connection through BSNL. I have a windows 7 ultimate, and using latest Google chrome. During night time ie from 12:30 am onwards till around 5:30 am, I have the following problem: Only the following webpages load: Google Search Google images and all related to google product pages like you see them on the google home page. Blogspot webpages as supported through Google. Any other site loading gets stuck with the status message:- Waiting for www.thaturl.com .... And it goes on and on. Why does this happen? I checked around googling for this but no solution at all. By the way I tried changing my dns addresses too sometimes from automatically to opendns and then Google public dns. I need some solution which might help me to load other websites also. Thanks in advance.

• Choosing a monitoring system for a dynamically scaling environment: Nagios v. Zabbix

  When operating in the cloud and scaling boxes automatically, there are certain monitoring issues that one experiences. Sometimes we might be monitoring 10 boxes and sometimes 100. The machines will scale up and down based on a demand. Right now, I think the best solution to this is to choose a monitoring solution that will instantiation of targets via calls to an API. But, is this really the best? I like the idea of dynamic discovery, but that is also a problem in the cloud seeing that the targets are not all in the same subnet. What monitoring solutions allow for a scaling environment like this? Zabbix currently has a draft API but I have been unable to fund a similar API for Nagios. Is there a similar API for Nagios? Anyone have any alternate suggestions besides Nagios and Zabbix?

• Is there a convenient method to pull files from a server in an SSH session?

  I often SSH into a cluster node for work and after processing want to pull several results back to my local machine for analysis. Typically, to do this I use a local shell to scp from the server, but this requires a lot of path manipulation. I'd prefer to use a syntax like interactive FTP and just 'pull' files from the server to my local pwd. Another possible solution might be to have some way to automatically set up my client computer as an ssh alias so that something like scp results home:~/results would work as expected. Is there any obscure SSH trick that'll do this for me? Working from grawity's answer, a complete solution in config files is something like local .ssh/config: Host ex HostName ssh.example.com RemoteForward 10101 localhost:22 ssh.example.com .ssh/config: Host home HostName localhost Port 10101 which lets me do commands exactly like scp results home: transferring the file results to my home machine.

• Script or Utility to convert .nab to .csv without importing double entries in Outlook

  Currently our environment is migrating from Groupwise 7 to Outlook 2003 and we have multiple users with mission critical outside contacts in their frequent contacts that will have to be imported in Outlook. Currently our only solution is to export GW contacts to a .nab, import to excel to scrub out the contacts in our own domain (to avoid double entry) and convert to .csv. This current solution will require a lot of man hours for hand holding because most of our users are not technically savvy AT ALL and are frankly too busy to do this themselves. Anyone know of any kind of tool or script to assist with this?

• If Nvidia Shield can stream a game via wifi, why can I not do the same via ethernet to any other PC?

  I think it absurd that a wireless game streaming solution is the *first to hit the market when a 1000mbps+ Ethernet connection would accomplish the same feat with roughly 6x the available bandwidth. I can only assume that there must be some reason behind this or a limitation preventing this, but what? 150mbps wifi is in no way superior to a 1000mbps LAN connection aside from well wireless mobility. Not only that but I have a secondary laptop and desktop which should by hardware comparison completely outperform anything the Tegra in the Nvidia Shield can do. Is this all just a marketing scheme to force people to buy the shield for the streaming benefit? Chief among these is that NVIDIA’s Shield handheld game console will be getting a microconsole-like mode, dubbed “Shield Console Mode”, that will allow the handheld to be converted into a more traditional TV-connected console. In console mode Shield can be controlled with a Bluetooth controller, and in accordance with the higher resolution of TVs will accept 1080p game streaming from a suitably equipped PC, versus 720p in handheld mode. With that said 1080p streaming will require additional bandwidth, and while 720p can be done over WiFi NVIDIA will be requiring a hardline GigE connection for 1080p streaming (note that Shield doesn’t have Ethernet, so this is presumably being done over USB). Streaming aside, in console mode Shield will also support its traditional local gaming/application functionality. - http://www.anandtech.com/show/7435/nvidia-consolidates-game-streaming-tech-under-gamestream-brand-announces-shield-console-mode ^ This is not acceptable for me for a number of reasons not to mention the ridiculousness of having a little screen+controller unit sitting there while using a secondary controller and screen instead. That kind of redundant absurdity exemplifies how wrong of a solution that is. They need a second product for this solution without the screen or controller for it to make sense... at which point your just buying a little computer that does what most other larger computers do better. All that is required, by my understanding, is the ability to decode H.264 video compression and transmit control/feedback so by any logical comparison, one (Nvidia especially) should have no difficulty in creating an application for PC's (win32/64 environment) that does the exact same thing their android app does. I have 2 video cards capable of streaming (encoding) H.264 so by right they must be capable of decoding it I would think. I haven't found anything stating plans to allow non-shield owners to do this. Can a third party create this software or does it hinge on some limitation that only Nvidia can overcome? (*) - perhaps this isn't the first but afaik it is the first complete package.

• Software architecture map to aid cross team communication?

  I work in a company where multiple teams each work on different parts of a software product in a vaguely agile/scrum manner. Mostly the organisation works well but there have been instances where a team may make a change without realising its impact on other teams. Where dependence is known communication has been good, and where dependence is suspected then 'broadcast' emails and informal conversations have also worked well. But there exists a sub-set of tasks that fall between the cracks. Broadcast emails are likely not the solution as they would become too numerous such that the email signal/noise ratio would fall. I'm contemplating a solution that involves a sort of map of the software, which details all of the various parts of the system and loosely tries to place interacting and dependent parts near to each other. Each developer then updates their position on the map (today I'm working on X and Y), and therefore if two or more developers happen to be co-located (or proximate) on the map then we can see this each day and this could form the trigger for further discussion on possible overlap and conflict. Is such a method out there and in use? If so what is it and does it work? Otherwise, do you think such a scheme has merit?

• Workaround for API limits [closed]

  Problem: Planning on building out a client services company that requires access to APIs. Most APIs are limited based on user, IP, etc. - and even though the API calls would be on a per client basis, there's no way to get usage not tied to IPs. (Theoretical) Solution: Have each client install on their network a proxy/VPN that would allow my systems to connect and use their assigned usage. So, it's possible there's a better solution than the one I've thought of, but it's the only one I've been able to come up with.

• How to nmot show any prompts when inserting a USB drive in Windows?

  1) I just found a really interesting program that allows me to use a USB drive as a windows login key. It is called Rohos Logon Key. IF I remobve my USB drive/key from the PC then I can have the PC lock or hibernate or any other option, I have been looking for such a solution for many years but never knew one existed until this and it works much better then I imagined. I do have a couple minor issues though (im using Windows 7 pro). When I remove and then re-insert my USB key, windows prompts me with this dialog here... Generally when I get this I just click on "Continue without scanning" however I am looking for a solution to just make it not even show this at all, is it possible to disable it from showing? 2) I also get this dialog as well when I insert USB drives/key... Would it be possible to not show this as well or have it pick an option by default or anything really?

• How can i use one Domain Controller to manage 3 separate small firms

  currently we have one Domain Controller that have 15 users and cup off services(hMailServer, IIS, DNS, Active Directory). Now the owners of the firm created two new firms which computers and networks are my responsibility. Now i wonder how exactly to join users in existing domain. Did you think that is a good idea to just include all computers and user from all firms under one domain or there is another solution ? Did some of you run into this kind of situation and what did you do ? ---Edit--- Brent, Dan thank for info guys. For now i will follow Brent advice until we get the new server witch we will virtualize and the old server will be our second DC on different location. Heck we even might think some Pay-as-you-go VPS solution for DC redundancy.

  I am making my first small mobile game in C# XNA. Lets say I have 3 screens, the main menu, options and game screen. A single game session usually lasts for 1 min, so the user will alternate frequently between the main menu and game screen. Therefore, once I load the textures for either screen, I want to keep them in memory to avoid frequent reloading. Both screens share some assets like their background textures, but differ in others. The first solution I came up with is making 2 texture factory classes, MainScreenAssetFactory and GameScreenAssetFactory, each with their own content manager, and ill store them in a globally accessible point so that they persist after either screen is destroyed. There is also a OptionsScreenAssetFactory, but that I dont want to cache it since the options screen is rarely visited. A typical Factory would look something like this public class MainScreenAssetFactory { private readonly ContentManager contentManager; public MainScreenAssetFactory(IServiceProvider serviceProvider, string rootDirectory) { contentManager = new ContentManager(serviceProvider) { RootDirectory = rootDirectory }; } public Texture2D ListElementBackground { get { return return contentManager.Load<Texture2D>("UserTab"); } } public Texture2D ListElementBulletPoint { get { return return contentManager.Load<Texture2D>("TabIcon"); } } public Texture2D LoggedOutUser { get { return return contentManager.Load<Texture2D>("LoggedOutUser"); } } } Since both Main, Options and Game Screen share some common resources, instead of loading them more than once, I created another class CommonAssetTexFactory which holds the common stuff and stays in-memory during the app lifetime. For example, this class gets passed to the options screen when it is created. However, given my small game with its few assets, I am already finding this solution cumbersome and inflexible. Changing anything would require looking to see if its already in the common factory, and if not, modifying existing factories and so on. And this is just considering textures currently, i didnt add sound files yet. I cant imagine bigger games with thousands of resources using this approach. A better idea must exist. Would someone please enlighten me?

I now i want to take a backup mirror of everything in a DVD or i can keep backup in another USB HDD. so in case if i face any windows or hard-drive failure in future then i can restore everything as it is as all are today. • Building intranet search

  At work, we have lots of information squirreled away in many different sites -- wikis, product docs, ticketing system, etc -- many of which require authentication. I'm very interested in having a single way to search all our various silos, and in my spare time have looked at Nutch, Grub, Django + Haystack, etc. None of these is a complete solution a la Google Mini or Google Search Appliance. Has anybody built a basic intranet search engine out of a mixture of these tools? Would you have recommendations about how to go about it? I like Django, and Haystack seems to be a mildly popular search solution for it, but I'd need to wire up a crawler that can support crawling authenticated sites to it.
