  • Unlocking Productivity

    - by Michael Snow
    Unlocking Productivity in Life Sciences with Consolidated Content Management by Joe Golemba, Vice President, Product Management, Oracle WebCenter As life sciences organizations look to become more operationally efficient, the ability to effectively leverage information is a competitive advantage. Whether data mining at the drug discovery phase or prepping the sales team before a product launch, content management can play a key role in developing, organizing, and disseminating vital information. The goal of content management is relatively straightforward: put the information that people need where they can find it. A number of issues can complicate this; information sits in many different systems, each of those systems has its own security, and the information in those systems exists in many different formats. Identifying and extracting pertinent information from mountains of farflung data is no simple job, but the alternative—wasted effort or even regulatory compliance issues—is worse. An integrated information architecture can enable health sciences organizations to make better decisions, accelerate clinical operations, and be more competitive. Unstructured data matters Often when we think of drug development data, we think of structured data that fits neatly into one or more research databases. But structured data is often directly supported by unstructured data such as experimental protocols, reaction conditions, lot numbers, run times, analyses, and research notes. As life sciences companies seek integrated views of data, they are typically finding diverse islands of data that seemingly have no relationship to other data in the organization. Information like sales reports or call center reports can be locked into siloed systems, and unavailable to the discovery process. Additionally, in the increasingly networked clinical environment, Web pages, instant messages, videos, scientific imaging, sales and marketing data, collaborative workspaces, and predictive modeling data are likely to be present within an organization, and each source potentially possesses information that can help to better inform specific efforts. Historically, content management solutions that had 21CFR Part 11 capabilities—electronic records and signatures—were focused mainly on content-enabling manufacturing-related processes. Today, life sciences companies have many standalone repositories, requiring different skills, service level agreements, and vendor support costs to manage them. With the amount of content doubling every three to six months, companies have recognized the need to manage unstructured content from the beginning, in order to increase employee productivity and operational efficiency. Using scalable and secure enterprise content management (ECM) solutions, organizations can better manage their unstructured content. These solutions can also be integrated with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems or research systems, making content available immediately, in the context of the application and within the flow of the employee’s typical business activity. Administrative safeguards—such as content de-duplication—can also be applied within ECM systems, so documents are never recreated, eliminating redundant efforts, ensuring one source of truth, and maintaining content standards in the organization. Putting it in context Consolidating structured and unstructured information in a single system can greatly simplify access to relevant information when it is needed through contextual search. Using contextual filters, results can include therapeutic area, position in the value chain, semantic commonalities, technology-specific factors, specific researchers involved, or potential business impact. The use of taxonomies is essential to organizing information and enabling contextual searches. Taxonomy solutions are composed of a hierarchical tree that defines the relationship between different life science terms. When overlaid with additional indexing related to research and/or business processes, it becomes possible to effectively narrow down the amount of data that is returned during searches, as well as prioritize results based on specific criteria and/or prior search history. Thus, search results are more accurate and relevant to an employee’s day-to-day work. For example, a search for the word "tissue" by a lab researcher would return significantly different results than a search for the same word performed by someone in procurement. Of course, diverse data repositories, combined with the immense amounts of data present in an organization, necessitate that the data elements be regularly indexed and cached beforehand to enable reasonable search response times. In its simplest form, indexing of a single, consolidated data warehouse can be expected to be a relatively straightforward effort. However, organizations require the ability to index multiple data repositories, enabling a single search to reference multiple data sources and provide an integrated results listing. Security and compliance Beyond yielding efficiencies and supporting new insight, an enterprise search environment can support important security considerations as well as compliance initiatives. For example, the systems enable organizations to retain the relevance and the security of the indexed systems, so users can only see the results to which they are granted access. This is especially important as life sciences companies are working in an increasingly networked environment and need to provide secure, role-based access to information across multiple partners. Although not officially required by the 21 CFR Part 11 regulation, the U.S. Food and Drug Administraiton has begun to extend the type of content considered when performing relevant audits and discoveries. Having an ECM infrastructure that provides centralized management of all content enterprise-wide—with the ability to consistently apply records and retention policies along with the appropriate controls, validations, audit trails, and electronic signatures—is becoming increasingly critical for life sciences companies. Making the move Creating an enterprise-wide ECM environment requires moving large amounts of content into a single enterprise repository, a daunting and risk-laden initiative. The first key is to focus on data taxonomy, allowing content to be mapped across systems. The second is to take advantage new tools which can dramatically speed and reduce the cost of the data migration process through automation. Additional content need not be frozen while it is migrated, enabling productivity throughout the process. The ability to effectively leverage information into success has been gaining importance in the life sciences industry for years. The rapid adoption of enterprise content management, both in operational processes as well as in scientific management, are clear indicators that the companies are looking to use all available data to be better informed, improve decision making, minimize risk, and increase time to market, to maintain profitability and be more competitive. As more and more varieties and sources of information are brought under the strategic management umbrella, the ability to divine knowledge from the vast pool of information is increasingly difficult. Simple search engines and basic content management are increasingly unable to effectively extract the right information from the mountains of data available. By bringing these tools into context and integrating them with business processes and applications, we can effectively focus on the right decisions that make our organizations more profitable. • Uncompiled WCF on IIS7: The type could not be found

    - by Jimmy
    Hello, I've been trying to follow this tutorial for deploying a WCF sample to IIS . I can't get it to work. This is a hosted site, but I do have IIS Manager access to the server. However, in step 2 of the tutorial, I can't "create a new IIS application that is physically located in this application directory". I can't seem to find a menu item, context menu item, or what not to create a new application. I've been right-clicking everywhere like crazy and still can't figure out how to create a new app. I suppose that's probably the root issue, but I tried a few other things (described below) just in case that actually is not the issue. This is "deployed" at http://test.com.cws1.my-hosting-panel.com/IISHostedCalcService/Service.svc . The error says: The type 'Microsoft.ServiceModel.Samples.CalculatorService', provided as the Service attribute value in the ServiceHost directive, or provided in the configuration element system.serviceModel/serviceHostingEnvironment/serviceActivations could not be found. I also tried to create a virtual dir (IISHostedCalc) in dotnetpanel that points to IISHostedCalcService . When I navigate to http://test.com.cws1.my-hosting-panel.com/IISHostedCalc/Service.svc , then there is a different error: This collection already contains an address with scheme http. There can be at most one address per scheme in this collection. As per the tutorial, there was no compiling involved; I just dropped the files on the server as follow inside the folder IISHostedCalcService: service.svc Web.config Service.cs service.svc contains: <%@ServiceHost language=c# Debug="true" Service="Microsoft.ServiceModel.Samples.CalculatorService"%> (I tried with quotes around the c# attribute, as this looks a little strange without quotes, but it made no difference) Web.config contains: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <system.serviceModel> <services> <service name="Microsoft.ServiceModel.Samples.CalculatorService"> <!-- This endpoint is exposed at the base address provided by host: http://localhost/servicemodelsamples/service.svc --> <endpoint address="" binding="wsHttpBinding" contract="Microsoft.ServiceModel.Samples.ICalculator" /> <!-- The mex endpoint is explosed at http://localhost/servicemodelsamples/service.svc/mex --> <endpoint address="mex" binding="mexHttpBinding" contract="IMetadataExchange" /> </service> </services> </system.serviceModel> <system.web> <customErrors mode="Off"/> </system.web> </configuration> Service.cs contains: using System; using System.ServiceModel; namespace Microsoft.ServiceModel.Samples { [ServiceContract] public interface ICalculator { [OperationContract] double Add(double n1, double n2); [OperationContract] double Subtract(double n1, double n2); [OperationContract] double Multiply(double n1, double n2); [OperationContract] double Divide(double n1, double n2); } public class CalculatorService : ICalculator { public double Add(double n1, double n2) { return n1 + n2; } public double Subtract(double n1, double n2) { return n1 - n2; } public double Multiply(double n1, double n2) { return n1 * n2; } public double Divide(double n1, double n2) { return n1 / n2; } } }

  • Deploying WCF Tutorial App on IIS7: "The type could not be found"

However, in step 2 of the tutorial, I can't "create a new IIS application that is physically located in this application directory". I can't seem to find a menu item, context menu item, or what not to create a new application. I've been right-clicking everywhere like crazy and still can't figure out how to create a new app. I suppose that's probably the root issue, but I tried a few other things (described below) just in case that actually is not the issue. Here is a picture of what I see in IIS Manager, in case my words don't do it justice: This is "deployed" at http://test.com.cws1.my-hosting-panel.com/IISHostedCalcService/Service.svc . The error says: The type 'Microsoft.ServiceModel.Samples.CalculatorService', provided as the Service attribute value in the ServiceHost directive, or provided in the configuration element system.serviceModel/serviceHostingEnvironment/serviceActivations could not be found. I also tried to create a virtual dir (IISHostedCalc) in dotnetpanel that points to IISHostedCalcService . There can be at most one address per scheme in this collection. Interestingly enough, if I click on View Applications, it seems like the virtual directory is an application (see image below)... although, as per the error message above, it doesn't work. As per the tutorial, there was no compiling involved; I just dropped the files on the server as follow inside the folder IISHostedCalcService: service.svc Web.config <dir: App_Code> Service.cs service.svc contains: <%@ServiceHost language=c# Debug="true" Service="Microsoft.ServiceModel.Samples.CalculatorService"%> (I tried with quotes around the c# attribute, as this looks a little strange without quotes, but it made no difference) Web.config contains: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <system.serviceModel> <services> <service name="Microsoft.ServiceModel.Samples.CalculatorService"> <!-- This endpoint is exposed at the base address provided by host: http://localhost/servicemodelsamples/service.svc --> <endpoint address="" binding="wsHttpBinding" contract="Microsoft.ServiceModel.Samples.ICalculator" /> <!-- The mex endpoint is explosed at http://localhost/servicemodelsamples/service.svc/mex --> <endpoint address="mex" binding="mexHttpBinding" contract="IMetadataExchange" /> </service> </services> </system.serviceModel> <system.web> <customErrors mode="Off"/> </system.web> </configuration> Service.cs contains: using System; using System.ServiceModel; namespace Microsoft.ServiceModel.Samples { [ServiceContract] public interface ICalculator { [OperationContract] double Add(double n1, double n2); [OperationContract] double Subtract(double n1, double n2); [OperationContract] double Multiply(double n1, double n2); [OperationContract] double Divide(double n1, double n2); } public class CalculatorService : ICalculator { public double Add(double n1, double n2) { return n1 + n2; } public double Subtract(double n1, double n2) { return n1 - n2; } public double Multiply(double n1, double n2) { return n1 * n2; } public double Divide(double n1, double n2) { return n1 / n2; } } }

  • Calling the same xsl:template for different node names of the same complex type

    - by CraftyFella
    Hi, I'm trying to keep my xsl DRY and as a result I wanted to call the same template for 2 sections of an XML document which happen to be the same complex type (ContactDetails and AltContactDetails). Given the following XML: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <RootNode> <Name>Bob</Name> <ContactDetails> <Address> <Line1>1 High Street</Line1> <Town>TownName</Town> <Postcode>AB1 1CD</Postcode> </Address> <Email>[email protected]</Email> </ContactDetails> <AltContactDetails> <Address> <Line1>3 Market Square</Line1> <Town>TownName</Town> <Postcode>EF2 2GH</Postcode> </Address> <Email>[email protected]</Email> </AltContactDetails> </RootNode> I wrote an XSL Stylesheet as follows: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" version="1.0"> <xsl:template match="/"> <PersonsName> <xsl:value-of select="RootNode/Name"/> </PersonsName> <xsl:call-template name="ContactDetails"> <xsl:with-param name="data"><xsl:value-of select="RootNode/ContactDetails"/></xsl:with-param> <xsl:with-param name="elementName"><xsl:value-of select="'FirstAddress'"/></xsl:with-param> </xsl:call-template> <xsl:call-template name="ContactDetails"> <xsl:with-param name="data"><xsl:value-of select="RootNode/AltContactDetails"/></xsl:with-param> <xsl:with-param name="elementName"><xsl:value-of select="'SecondAddress'"/></xsl:with-param> </xsl:call-template> </xsl:template> <xsl:template name="ContactDetails"> <xsl:param name="data"></xsl:param> <xsl:param name="elementName"></xsl:param> <xsl:element name="{$elementName}"> <FirstLine> <xsl:value-of select="$data/Address/Line1"/> </FirstLine> <Town> <xsl:value-of select="$data/Address/Town"/> </Town> <PostalCode> <xsl:value-of select="$data/Address/Postcode"/> </PostalCode> </xsl:element> </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet> When i try to run the style sheet it's complaining to me that I need to: To use a result tree fragment in a path expression, either use exsl:node-set() or specify version 1.1 I don't want to go to version 1.1.. So does anyone know how to get the exsl:node-set() working for the above example? Or if someone knows of a better way to apply the same template to 2 different sections then that would also really help me out? Thanks Dave

  • Should I go vor Arrays or Objects in PHP in a CouchDB/Ajax app?

    - by karlthorwald
    I find myself converting between array and object all the time in PHP application that uses couchDB and Ajax. Of course I am also converting objects to JSON and back (for sometimes couchdb but mostly Ajax), but this is not so much disturbing my workflow. At the present I have php objects that are returned by the CouchDB modules I use and on the other hand I have the old habbit to return arrays like array("error"="not found","data"=$dataObj) from my functions. This leads to a mixed occurence of real php objects and nested arrays and I cast with (object) or (array) if necessary. The worst thing is that I know more or less by heart what a function returns, but not what type (array or object), so I often run into type errors. My plan is now to always cast arrays to objects before returning from a function. Of course this implies a lot of refactoring. Is this the right way to go? What about the conversion overhead? Other ideas or tips? Edit: Kenaniah's answer suggests I should go the other way, this would mean I'd cast everything to arrays. And for all the Ajax / JSON stuff and also for CouchDB I would use $myarray = json_decode($json_data,$assoc = false) Even more work to change all the CouchDB and Ajax functions but in the end I have better code.

  • RegularExpression-esque search matching Objects in List

    - by Pindatjuh
    I'm currently working on an implementation of the following idea, and I was wondering if there is any literature on this subject. Working with Java, but the principle applies on any language with a decent type-system, I like to implement: matching Objects from a List using a RegularExpression-esque search: So let's say I have a List containing List<Object> x = new ArrayList<Object>(); x.add(new Object()); x.add("Hello World"); x.add("Second String"); x.add(5); // Integer (auto-boxing) x.add(6); // Integer Then I create a "Regular Expression" (not working with a stream of characters, but working with a stream of Objects), and instead of character-classes, I use type-system properties: [String][Integer] And this would match one sublist: {Match["Second String", 5]}. The expression: [String:length()<15] Will match two sublist (each of length 1) containing a String which instance is passing the expression instance.length() < 5: {Match["Hello World"],Match["Second String"]}. [Object][Object] Matches any pair in the List: {Match[Object,"Hello World"],Match["Second String", 5]}, in a streamed manner (no overlapping matches). Ofcourse, my implementation will have grouping, lookahead/lookbehinds and is hierarchical (i.e. matching n elements from Lists in Lists), etc. The above merely illustrates the concept. Is there a name for this principle, and is there literature available on it?

  • Flash Media Server Streaming: Content Protection

    - by dbemerlin
    Hi, i have to implement flash streaming for the relaunch of our video-on-demand system but either because i haven't worked with flash-related systems before or because i'm too stupid i cannot get the system to work as it has to. We need: Per file & user access control with checks on a WebService every minute if the lease time ran out mid-stream: cancelling the stream rtmp streaming dynamic bandwidth checking Video Playback with Flowplayer (existing license) I've got the streaming and bandwidth check working, i just can't seem to get the access control working. I have no idea how i know which file is played back or how i can play back a file depending on a key the user has entered. Server-Side Code (main.asc): application.onAppStart = function() { trace("Starting application"); this.payload = new Array(); for (var i=0; i < 1200; i++) { this.payload[i] = Math.random(); //16K approx } } application.onConnect = function( p_client, p_autoSenseBW ) { p_client.writeAccess = ""; trace("client at : " + p_client.uri); trace("client from : " + p_client.referrer); trace("client page: " + p_client.pageUrl); // try to get something from the query string: works var i = 0; for (i = 0; i < p_client.uri.length; ++i) { if (p_client.uri[i] == '?') { ++i; break; } } var loadVars = new LoadVars(); loadVars.decode(p_client.uri.substr(i)); trace(loadVars.toString()); trace(loadVars['foo']); // And accept the connection this.acceptConnection(p_client); trace("accepted!"); //this.rejectConnection(p_client); // A connection from Flash 8 & 9 FLV Playback component based client // requires the following code. if (p_autoSenseBW) { p_client.checkBandwidth(); } else { p_client.call("onBWDone"); } trace("Done connecting"); } application.onDisconnect = function(client) { trace("client disconnecting!"); } Client.prototype.getStreamLength = function(p_streamName) { trace("getStreamLength:" + p_streamName); return Stream.length(p_streamName); } Client.prototype.checkBandwidth = function() { application.calculateClientBw(this); } application.calculateClientBw = function(p_client) { /* lots of lines copied from an adobe sample, appear to work */ } Client-Side Code: <head> <script type="text/javascript" src="flowplayer-3.1.4.min.js"></script> </head> <body> <a class="rtmp" href="rtmp://xx.xx.xx.xx/vod_project/test_flv.flv" style="display: block; width: 520px; height: 330px" id="player"> </a> <script> $f( "player", "flowplayer-3.1.5.swf", { clip: { provider: 'rtmp', autoPlay: false, url: 'test_flv' }, plugins: { rtmp: { url: 'flowplayer.rtmp-3.1.3.swf', netConnectionUrl: 'rtmp://xx.xx.xx.xx/vod_project?foo=bar' } } } ); </script> </body> My first Idea was to get a key from the Query String, ask the web service about which file and user that key is for and play the file but i can't seem to find out how to play a file from server side. My second idea was to let flowplayer play a file, pass the key as query string and if the filename and key don't match then reject the connection but i can't seem to find out which file it's currently playing. The only remaining idea i have is: create a list of all files the user is allowed to open and set allowReadAccess or however it was called to allow those files, but that would be clumsy due to the current infrastructure. Any hints? Thanks.

  • ASP.NET MVC 3 embrace dynamic type - CSDN.NET - CSDN Software Development Channel

    - by user559071
    About a decade ago, Microsoft will all bet on the WebForms and static types. With the complete package from scattered to the continuous development, and now almost every page can be viewed as its own procedure. Subsequent years, the industry continued to move in another direction, love is better than separation package, better than the late binding early binding to the idea. This leads to two very interesting questions. The first is the problem of terminology. Consider the original Smalltalk MVC model, view and controller is not only tightly coupled together, and usually in pairs. Most of the framework is that Microsoft, including the classic VB, WinForms, WebForms, WPF and Silverlight, they both use the code behind file to store the controller logic. But said "MVC" usually refers to the view and controller are loosely coupled framework. This is especially true for the Web framework, HTML form submission mechanism allows any views submitted to any of the controller. Since this article was mainly talking about Web technologies, so we need to use the modern definition. The second question is "If you're Microsoft, how to change orbit without causing too much pressure to the developer?" So far, the answer is: new releases each year, until the developers meet up. ASP.NET MVC's first product was released last March. Released in March this year, ASP.NET MVC 2.0. 3.0 RC 2 is currently in phase, expected to be released next March. December 10, Microsoft released ASP.NET MVC 3.0 Release Candidate 2. RC 2 is built on top of Microsoft's commitment to the jQuery: The default project template into jQuery 1.4.4, jQuery Validation 1.7 and jQuery UI. Although people think that Microsoft will focus shifted away from server-side controls to be a joke, but the introduction of Microsoft's jQuery UI is that this is the real thing. For those worried about the scalability of the developers, there are many excellent control can replace the session state. With SessionState property, you can tell the controller session state is read-only, read-write, or can be completely ignored in the. This site is no single server, but if a server needs to access another server session state, then this approach can provide a great help. MVC 3 contains Razor view engine. By default, the engine will be encoded HTML output, so that we can easily output on the screen the text of the original. HTML injection attacks even without the risk of encoded text can not easily prevent the page rendering. For many C # developers in the end do what is most shocking that MVC 3 for the controller and view and embrace the dynamic type. ViewBag property will open a dynamic object, developers can run on top of the object to add attributes. In general, it is used to send the view from the controller non-mode data. Scott Guthrie provides state of the sample contains text (such as the current time) and used to assemble the list box entries. admit me describe my questions in situation-oriented way: assume IE is still the dominate web browser(the firefox have document for binary processing): the XMLHttpRequest.responseText or XMLHttpRequest.responseXML in ie desire txt or xml/xhtml/html,but what about the server response the xmlHttprequest whith MIME TYPE application/octet ? would the response string all little than 256 ?(every char of that string < 256), thanks very much for a straight answer, i have no webserver env,so i don't know how to test it out. because use txt or xml have a issue of character set encode, and i don't know how to process #[[[CDDATA node of one encoded xml(ex : utf-8,ascii,gb18030) with javascript, when i getNodeText, does the docObj return me byte or decoded char ? if it was decoded char which according to the header indicated charSet in the httpresponse , it would be all wrong. to avoid mess up with charSet ,i would like the server to response octet data and force strings data to be encoded as utf-8 but another charSet in the binary format. if the response is octal, so i guess the browser would not try to decode the response"txt" does this weird? or miss understanding the fundamental things? EDIT: I believe the question is asking this: Can Javascript safely process strings that aren't encoded in Unicode? What are the problems with trying to do so? EDIT: no no no , i means if http-header: content-type is "application/octet" , would the ie try to decoded it as (16bits Unicode | ie local setting charset ) when i get XMLHttpRequestobj.responseText use javascript ? or it(ie) just wrap every single byte of the response body as a javascript string, then every char in that string little than or equal 256 (char<=256), am i talking Mars language? sadly, if i were Marsizen,i would come as tourist without fuzzy questions. however i am in a country which share at least one property with Mars : RED

  • Comparing 2 tables column values and copying the next column content to the second table

    - by Sullan
    Hi All.. I am comparing between two tables first column each. If there is find a match i am copying the text from the adjacent cell of the first table to the second table. I am able to compare strings and get the value, but finding it difficult to print it in the second table. I am getting the value in the var "replaceText", but how to print it in the second table ?? Please help... Sample code is as follows.. <script type="text/javascript"> jQuery.noConflict(); jQuery(document).ready(function(){ jQuery('.itemname').each(function(){ var itemName = jQuery(this).text(); jQuery('.comparerow').each(function() { var compareRow = jQuery(this).text(); if (itemName == compareRow) { var replaceText = jQuery(this).next('td').text(); alert(replaceText); } }); }); }); </script> HTML is as follows <table width="100%"><thead> <tr> <th align="left" >Name</th><th>Description</th></tr></thead> <tbody> <tr> <td class="comparerow">IX0001</td> <td class="desc">Desc 1 </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="comparerow">IX0002</td> <td class="desc" >Desc 2 </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="comparerow">IX0003</td> <td class="desc">Desc 3 </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="comparerow">IX0004</td> <td class="desc">Desc 4 </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <br /> <table width="100%"> <tr> <th>Name</th><th>Description</th> </tr> <tr > <td class="itemname">IX0001</td><td></td> </tr> <tr> <td class="itemname">IX0002</td><td></td> </tr> <tr> <td class="itemname">IX0003</td><td></td> </tr> </table>

  • "Invalid use of Null" when using Str() with a Null Recordset field, but Str(Null) works fine

    - by Mike Spross
    I'm banging my head against the wall on this one. I was looking at some old database reporting code written in VB6 and case across this line (the code is moving data from a "source" database into a reporting database): rsTarget!VehYear = Trim(Str(rsSource!VehYear)) When rsSource!VehYear is Null, the above line generates an "Invalid use of Null" run-time error. If I break on the above line and type the following in the Immediate pane: ?rsSource!VehYear It outputs Null. Fine, that makes sense. Next, I try to reproduce the error: ?Str(rsSource!VehYear) I get an "Invalid use of Null" error. However, if I type the following into the Immediate window: ?Str(Null) I don't get an error. It simply outputs Null. If I repeat the same experiment with Trim() instead of Str(), everything works fine. ?Trim(rsSource!VehYear) returns Null, as does ?Trim(Null). No run-time errors. So, my question is, how can Str(rsSource!VehYear) possibly throw an "Invalid use of Null" error when Str(Null) does not, when I know that rsSource!VehYear is equal to Null?

  • Templated function with two type parameters fails compile when used with an error-checking macro

    - by SirPentor
    Because someone in our group hates exceptions (let's not discuss that here), we tend to use error-checking macros in our C++ projects. I have encountered an odd compilation failure when using a templated function with two type parameters. There are a few errors (below), but I think the root cause is a warning: warning C4002: too many actual parameters for macro 'BOOL_CHECK_BOOL_RETURN' Probably best explained in code: #include "stdafx.h" template<class A, class B> bool DoubleTemplated(B & value) { return true; } template<class A> bool SingleTemplated(A & value) { return true; } bool NotTemplated(bool & value) { return true; } #define BOOL_CHECK_BOOL_RETURN(expr) \ do \ { \ bool __b = (expr); \ if (!__b) \ { \ return false; \ } \ } while (false) \ bool call() { bool thing = true; // BOOL_CHECK_BOOL_RETURN(DoubleTemplated<int, bool>(thing)); // Above line doesn't compile. BOOL_CHECK_BOOL_RETURN((DoubleTemplated<int, bool>(thing))); // Above line compiles just fine. bool temp = DoubleTemplated<int, bool>(thing); // Above line compiles just fine. BOOL_CHECK_BOOL_RETURN(SingleTemplated<bool>(thing)); BOOL_CHECK_BOOL_RETURN(NotTemplated(thing)); return true; } int _tmain(int argc, _TCHAR* argv[]) { call(); return 0; } Here are the errors, when the offending line is not commented out: 1>------ Build started: Project: test, Configuration: Debug Win32 ------ 1>Compiling... 1>test.cpp 1>c:\junk\temp\test\test\test.cpp(38) : warning C4002: too many actual parameters for macro 'BOOL_CHECK_BOOL_RETURN' 1>c:\junk\temp\test\test\test.cpp(38) : error C2143: syntax error : missing ',' before ')' 1>c:\junk\temp\test\test\test.cpp(38) : error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before '{' 1>c:\junk\temp\test\test\test.cpp(41) : error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before '{' 1>c:\junk\temp\test\test\test.cpp(48) : error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before '{' 1>c:\junk\temp\test\test\test.cpp(49) : error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before '{' 1>c:\junk\temp\test\test\test.cpp(52) : error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before '}' 1>c:\junk\temp\test\test\test.cpp(54) : error C2065: 'argv' : undeclared identifier 1>c:\junk\temp\test\test\test.cpp(54) : error C2059: syntax error : ']' 1>c:\junk\temp\test\test\test.cpp(55) : error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before '{' 1>c:\junk\temp\test\test\test.cpp(58) : error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before '}' 1>c:\junk\temp\test\test\test.cpp(60) : error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before '}' 1>c:\junk\temp\test\test\test.cpp(60) : fatal error C1004: unexpected end-of-file found 1>Build log was saved at "file://c:\junk\temp\test\test\Debug\BuildLog.htm" 1>test - 12 error(s), 1 warning(s) ========== Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped ========== Any ideas?   • How do I get a Dane-Elec mp3/mp4 player working?

    - by user40432
    My MP3/MP4 does not plug-in and play and therefore I can not transfer any file to the MP3/MP4 dane-elec music my touch or only dane-elec with 8 gb in memory and perhapses model zt1 with radio,..and microsdhc card slot following the above link the mp3/mp4 is there and it is MP3 Player: TOUCH MY MUSIC and the complete information is on this site http://www.danedigital.com/8-Music-Media-Players/2-music-touch.html as the Technical Specifications MP3 Player: TOUCH MY MUSIC The Mp4 player has a very classy. It allows its users to play music and view photos and video. His fluent interface, its touch-pad, his radio and RDS Micro SDHC reader makes him a very complete device will become the ideal musical companion. ubuntu i am with is ubuntu 11.10 kernel 3.0.0-14-generic the latest I tried to install many applications but nothing worked. With disk utility I can see that Ubuntu can recognize something, that as a peripheral device named rockchip usbdisk user and rockchip usbdisk sd, and i can plug and play other devices, and only this mp3/mp4 do not connect to the computer with ubuntu and the device as no problem working disconnected to computer I try to see if work on Windows and it does! I can see the device and transfer files to the MP3/MP4 dane-elec folder device and use FAT32. So why can not do on Ubuntu!? What can I do and why does not work on Ubuntu? What is wrong with it? • Trying to randomise a jQuery content slider

    - by alecrust
    Hi everyone, I'm using a very nice jQuery content slider called Easy Slider on my site that I downloaded from Css Globe. The script is excellent and does just what I want - except I can't make it randomise the list, it always scrolls from left to right or right to left! I'm far from good with JavaScript, so my attempts at solving this have been feeble. Although I'm sure it must be an easy fix! If anyone wouldn't mind taking a glance over the script to see if they can spot what I need to change to make it random it would be greatly appreciated! I've tried contacting the original plugin developer but have had no response yet. The comments on the Easy Slider page didn't bear much fruit either unfortunately. I've pasted the script I'm using on my site below: /* * Easy Slider 1.7 - jQuery plugin * written by Alen Grakalic * http://cssglobe.com/post/4004/easy-slider-15-the-easiest-jquery-plugin-for-sliding * * Copyright (c) 2009 Alen Grakalic (http://cssglobe.com) * Dual licensed under the MIT (MIT-LICENSE.txt) * and GPL (GPL-LICENSE.txt) licenses. * * Built for jQuery library * http://jquery.com * */ (function($) { $.fn.easySlider = function(options){ // default configuration properties var defaults = { prevId: 'prevBtn', prevText: 'Previous', nextId: 'nextBtn', nextText: 'Next', controlsShow: true, controlsBefore: '', controlsAfter: '', controlsFade: true, firstId: 'firstBtn', firstText: 'First', firstShow: false, lastId: 'lastBtn', lastText: 'Last', lastShow: false, vertical: false, speed: 800, auto: false, pause: 7000, continuous: false, numeric: false, numericId: 'controls' }; var options = $.extend(defaults, options); this.each(function() { var obj = $(this); var s = $("li", obj).length; var w = $("li", obj).width(); var h = $("li", obj).height(); var clickable = true; obj.width(w); obj.height(h); obj.css("overflow","hidden"); var ts = s-1; var t = 0; $("ul", obj).css('width',s*w); if(options.continuous){ $("ul", obj).prepend($("ul li:last-child", obj).clone().css("margin-left","-"+ w +"px")); $("ul", obj).append($("ul li:nth-child(2)", obj).clone()); $("ul", obj).css('width',(s+1)*w); }; if(!options.vertical) $("li", obj).css('float','left'); if(options.controlsShow){ var html = options.controlsBefore; if(options.numeric){ html += '<ol id="'+ options.numericId +'"></ol>'; } else { if(options.firstShow) html += '<span id="'+ options.firstId +'"><a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">'+ options.firstText +'</a></span>'; html += ' <span id="'+ options.prevId +'"><a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">'+ options.prevText +'</a></span>'; html += ' <span id="'+ options.nextId +'"><a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">'+ options.nextText +'</a></span>'; if(options.lastShow) html += ' <span id="'+ options.lastId +'"><a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">'+ options.lastText +'</a></span>'; }; html += options.controlsAfter; $(obj).after(html); }; if(options.numeric){ for(var i=0;i<s;i++){ $(document.createElement("li")) .attr('id',options.numericId + (i+1)) .html('<a rel='+ i +' href=\"javascript:void(0);\">'+ (i+1) +'</a>') .appendTo($("#"+ options.numericId)) .click(function(){ animate($("a",$(this)).attr('rel'),true); }); }; } else { $("a","#"+options.nextId).click(function(){ animate("next",true); }); $("a","#"+options.prevId).click(function(){ animate("prev",true); }); $("a","#"+options.firstId).click(function(){ animate("first",true); }); $("a","#"+options.lastId).click(function(){ animate("last",true); }); }; function setCurrent(i){ i = parseInt(i)+1; $("li", "#" + options.numericId).removeClass("current"); $("li#" + options.numericId + i).addClass("current"); }; function adjust(){ if(t>ts) t=0; if(t<0) t=ts; if(!options.vertical) { $("ul",obj).css("margin-left",(t*w*-1)); } else { $("ul",obj).css("margin-left",(t*h*-1)); } clickable = true; if(options.numeric) setCurrent(t); }; function animate(dir,clicked){ if (clickable){ clickable = false; var ot = t; switch(dir){ case "next": t = (ot>=ts) ?   • Including inline javascript using content_for in rails

    - by TenJack
    I am using content_for and yeild to inject javascript files into the bottom of my layout but am wondering what the best practice is for including inline javascript. Specifically I'm wondering where the put the script type declaration: <% content_for :javascript do %> <script type="text/javascript"> ... </script> <% end %> or <% content_for :javascript do %> ... <% end %> <script type="text/javascript"> <%= yield :javascript %> </script> <% end %> I am using the first option now and wondering if it is bad to include multiple ... declarations within one view. Sometimes I have partials that lead to this.

  • jQuery Cycle Plugin - Content not cycling

    - by fmz
    I am setting up a page with jQuery's Cycle plugin and have four divs set to fade. I have the code in place, the images set, but it doesn't cycle properly. Firefox says there is a problem with the following code: <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { $('.slideshow').cycle({ fx: 'fade' }); }); </script> Here is the html: <div class="slideshow"> <div id="mainImg-1" class="slide"> <div class="quote"> <h2>Building Big Relationships with Small Business.</h2> <p>&ldquo;This is quote Number One.<br /> They are there when I need them the most.&rdquo;</p> <p><span class="author">Jane Doe &ndash; Charlotte Flower Shop</span></p> <div class="help"><a href="cb_services.html">Let Us Help You</a></div> </div> </div> <div id="mainImg-2" class="slide"> <div class="quote"> <h2>Building Big Relationships with Small Business.</h2> <p>&ldquo;This is quote Number Two.<br /> They are there when I need them the most.&rdquo;</p> <p><span class="author">Jane Doe &ndash; Charlotte Flower Shop</span></p> <div class="help"><a href="cb_services.html">Let Us Help You</a></div> </div> </div> <div id="mainImg-3" class="slide"> <div class="quote"> <h2>Building Big Relationships with Small Business.</h2> <p>&ldquo;This is quote Number three.<br /> They are there when I need them the most.&rdquo;</p> <p><span class="author">Jane Doe &ndash; Charlotte Flower Shop</span></p> <div class="help"><a href="cb_services.html">Let Us Help You</a></div> </div> </div> <div id="mainImg-4" class="slide"> <div class="quote"> <h2>Building Big Relationships with Small Business.</h2> <p>&ldquo;This is quote Number Fout.<br /> They are there when I need them the most.&rdquo;</p> <p><span class="author">Jane Doe &ndash; Charlotte Flower Shop</span></p> <div class="help"><a href="cb_services.html">Let Us Help You</a></div> </div> </div> Here is the CSS: .slideshow { width: 946px; height: 283px; border: 1px solid #c29c5d; margin: 8px; overflow: hidden; z-index: 1; } #mainImg-1 { width: 946px; height: 283px; background: url(../_images/main.jpg) no-repeat 9px 9px; } #mainImg-2 { width: 946px; height: 283px; background: url(../_images/main.jpg) no-repeat 9px 9px; } #mainImg-3 { width: 946px; height: 283px; background: url(../_images/main.jpg) no-repeat 9px 9px; } #mainImg-4 { width: 946px; height: 283px; background: url(../_images/main.jpg) no-repeat 9px 9px; } #mainImg-1 .quote, #mainImg-2 .quote, #mainImg-3 .quote, #mainImg-4 .quote { width: 608px; height: 168px; float: right; margin: 80px 11px 0 0; background: url(../_images/bg_quoteBox.png) repeat-x; } Before you go off and say, "hey, those images are all the same". You are right, the images are all the same right now, but the text should be rotating as well and there is a slight difference there. In addition, the fade should still show up. Anyway, you can see the dev page here: http://173.201.163.213/projectpath/first_trust/index.html I would appreciate some help to get this cycling through as it should. Thanks!

  • Avoid duplicate custom post type posts in multiple loops in Wordpress

    - by christinaaa
    I am running two loops with a custom post type of Portfolio (ID of 3). The first loop is for Featured and the second is for the rest. I plan on having more than 3 Featured posts in random order. I would like to have the Featured ones that aren't displaying in the first loop to show up in my second loop. How can I set this up so there are no duplicate posts? <?php /* Template Name: Portfolio */ get_header(); ?> <div class="section-bg"> <div class="portfolio"> <div class="featured-title"> <h1>featured</h1> </div> <!-- end #featured-title --> <div class="featured-gallery"> <?php $args = array( 'post_type' => 'portfolio', 'posts_per_page' => 3, 'cat' => 3, 'orderby' => 'rand' ); $loop = new WP_Query( $args ); while ( $loop->have_posts() ) : $loop->the_post(); ?> <div class="featured peek"> <a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>"> <h1> <?php $thetitle = $post->post_title; $getlength = strlen($thetitle); $thelength = 40; echo substr($thetitle, 0, $thelength); if ($getlength > $thelength) echo '...'; ?> </h1> <div class="contact-divider"></div> <p><?php the_tags('',' / '); ?></p> <?php the_post_thumbnail('thumbnail', array('class' => 'cover')); ?> </a> </div> <!-- end .featured --> <?php endwhile; ?> </div> <!-- end .featured-gallery --> <div class="clearfix"></div> </div> <!-- end .portfolio --> </div> <!-- end #section-bg --> <div class="clearfix"></div> <div class="section-bg"> <div class="portfolio-gallery"> <?php $args = array( 'post_type' => 'portfolio', 'orderby' => 'rand'); $loop = new WP_Query( $args ); while ( $loop->have_posts() ) : $loop->the_post(); ?> <div class="featured peek"> <a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>"> <h1> <?php $thetitle = $post->post_title; $getlength = strlen($thetitle); $thelength = 40; echo substr($thetitle, 0, $thelength); if ($getlength > $thelength) echo '...'; ?> </h1> <div class="contact-divider"></div> <p><?php the_tags('',' / '); ?></p> <a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>"><?php the_post_thumbnail('thumbnail', array('class' => 'cover')); ?></a> </a> </div> <!-- end .featured --> <?php endwhile; ?> <div class="clearfix"></div> </div> <!-- end .portfolio-gallery --> <div class="clearfix"></div> </div> <!-- end #section-bg --> <?php get_footer(); ?> If possible, could the answer outline how to implement it into my existing code? Thank you. :)

  • How to format dates in Jahia 6 CMS?

    - by dpb
    I am helping a friend of mine put up a site for his business. I’ve read different posts and sites trying to find the ideal CMS tool, but people have different views of what is the best, so I finally just picked one of them at random. So I went for an evaluation of Jahia 6.0-CE. As you’ve probably guessed by now, I don’t have so much experience with CMS tools. I just want to setup the CMS, write the templates for the site and let my friend manage the content from there on. So I extracted the sources from SVN and went for a test drive. I managed to create some simple templates to get a hang of things but now I have an issue with a date format. In my definitions.cnd I declared the field like so: date myDateField (datetimepicker[format='dd.MM.yyyy']) This is formatted in the page and the selector also presents this in the dd.MM.yyyy format when inserting the content. But how about sites in other countries, countries that represent the date as MM.dd.yyyy for example? If I specify the format in the CND, hard coded, how can I change this later on so that it adapts based on the browser’s language? Do I extract the content from the repository and format it by hand in the JSP template based on a Locale, or is there a better way? Thank you.

  • jquery tabs - load url in current tab?

    - by BigDogsBarking
    I'm trying to figure out how to load the url each tab links to inside the tab area onclick, and have been trying to following the docs at http://docs.jquery.com/UI/Tabs#...open_links_in_the_current_tab_instead_of_leaving_the_page, but am clearly not getting it.... This is the HTML markup: <div class="tabs"> <ul class="tabNav"> <li><a href="/1.html#tabone">Tab One</a></li> <li><a href="/2.html#tabtwo">Tab Two</a></li> <li><a href="/3.html#tabthree">Tab Three</a></li> </ul> </div> <div id="tabone"> <!-- Trying to load content from 1.html in this div on click --> </div> <div id="tabtwo"> <!-- Trying to load content from 2.html in this div on click --> </div> <div id="tabthree"> <!-- Trying to load content from 3.html in this div on click --> </div> And this is the jquery I'm trying to use: $(".tabs").tabs({ load: function(event, ui) { $('a', ui.panel).click(function() { $(ui.panel).load(this.href); return false; }); } }); I know I've got some part of this wrong.... I've gone through several iterations (too many to post), and all I get is a blank div... I don't know... Feeling a bit confused here... Help?

  • Capturing and Transforming ASP.NET Output with Response.Filter

    - by Rick Strahl
    During one of my Handlers and Modules session at DevConnections this week one of the attendees asked a question that I didn’t have an immediate answer for. Basically he wanted to capture response output completely and then apply some filtering to the output – effectively injecting some additional content into the page AFTER the page had completely rendered. Specifically the output should be captured from anywhere – not just a page and have this code injected into the page. Some time ago I posted some code that allows you to capture ASP.NET Page output by overriding the Render() method, capturing the HtmlTextWriter() and reading its content, modifying the rendered data as text then writing it back out. I’ve actually used this approach on a few occasions and it works fine for ASP.NET pages. But this obviously won’t work outside of the Page class environment and it’s not really generic – you have to create a custom page class in order to handle the output capture. [updated 11/16/2009 – updated ResponseFilterStream implementation and a few additional notes based on comments] Enter Response.Filter However, ASP.NET includes a Response.Filter which can be used – well to filter output. Basically Response.Filter is a stream through which the OutputStream is piped back to the Web Server (indirectly). As content is written into the Response object, the filter stream receives the appropriate Stream commands like Write, Flush and Close as well as read operations although for a Response.Filter that’s uncommon to be hit. The Response.Filter can be programmatically replaced at runtime which allows you to effectively intercept all output generation that runs through ASP.NET. A common Example: Dynamic GZip Encoding A rather common use of Response.Filter hooking up code based, dynamic  GZip compression for requests which is dead simple by applying a GZipStream (or DeflateStream) to Response.Filter. The following generic routines can be used very easily to detect GZip capability of the client and compress response output with a single line of code and a couple of library helper routines: WebUtils.GZipEncodePage(); which is handled with a few lines of reusable code and a couple of static helper methods: /// <summary> ///Sets up the current page or handler to use GZip through a Response.Filter ///IMPORTANT:  ///You have to call this method before any output is generated! /// </summary> public static void GZipEncodePage() {     HttpResponse Response = HttpContext.Current.Response;     if(IsGZipSupported())     {         stringAcceptEncoding = HttpContext.Current.Request.Headers["Accept-Encoding"];         if(AcceptEncoding.Contains("deflate"))         {             Response.Filter = newSystem.IO.Compression.DeflateStream(Response.Filter,                                        System.IO.Compression.CompressionMode.Compress);             Response.AppendHeader("Content-Encoding", "deflate");         }         else        {             Response.Filter = newSystem.IO.Compression.GZipStream(Response.Filter,                                       System.IO.Compression.CompressionMode.Compress);             Response.AppendHeader("Content-Encoding", "gzip");                            }     }     // Allow proxy servers to cache encoded and unencoded versions separately    Response.AppendHeader("Vary", "Content-Encoding"); } /// <summary> /// Determines if GZip is supported /// </summary> /// <returns></returns> public static bool IsGZipSupported() { string AcceptEncoding = HttpContext.Current.Request.Headers["Accept-Encoding"]; if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(AcceptEncoding) && (AcceptEncoding.Contains("gzip") || AcceptEncoding.Contains("deflate"))) return true; return false; } GZipStream and DeflateStream are streams that are assigned to Response.Filter and by doing so apply the appropriate compression on the active Response. Response.Filter content is chunked So to implement a Response.Filter effectively requires only that you implement a custom stream and handle the Write() method to capture Response output as it’s written. At first blush this seems very simple – you capture the output in Write, transform it and write out the transformed content in one pass. And that indeed works for small amounts of content. But you see, the problem is that output is written in small buffer chunks (a little less than 16k it appears) rather than just a single Write() statement into the stream, which makes perfect sense for ASP.NET to stream data back to IIS in smaller chunks to minimize memory usage en route. Unfortunately this also makes it a more difficult to implement any filtering routines since you don’t directly get access to all of the response content which is problematic especially if those filtering routines require you to look at the ENTIRE response in order to transform or capture the output as is needed for the solution the gentleman in my session asked for. So in order to address this a slightly different approach is required that basically captures all the Write() buffers passed into a cached stream and then making the stream available only when it’s complete and ready to be flushed. As I was thinking about the implementation I also started thinking about the few instances when I’ve used Response.Filter implementations. Each time I had to create a new Stream subclass and create my custom functionality but in the end each implementation did the same thing – capturing output and transforming it. I thought there should be an easier way to do this by creating a re-usable Stream class that can handle stream transformations that are common to Response.Filter implementations. Creating a semi-generic Response Filter Stream Class What I ended up with is a ResponseFilterStream class that provides a handful of Events that allow you to capture and/or transform Response content. The class implements a subclass of Stream and then overrides Write() and Flush() to handle capturing and transformation operations. By exposing events it’s easy to hook up capture or transformation operations via single focused methods. ResponseFilterStream exposes the following events: CaptureStream, CaptureString Captures the output only and provides either a MemoryStream or String with the final page output. Capture is hooked to the Flush() operation of the stream. TransformStream, TransformString Allows you to transform the complete response output with events that receive a MemoryStream or String respectively and can you modify the output then return it back as a return value. The transformed output is then written back out in a single chunk to the response output stream. These events capture all output internally first then write the entire buffer into the response. TransformWrite, TransformWriteString Allows you to transform the Response data as it is written in its original chunk size in the Stream’s Write() method. Unlike TransformStream/TransformString which operate on the complete output, these events only see the current chunk of data written. This is more efficient as there’s no caching involved, but can cause problems due to searched content splitting over multiple chunks. Using this implementation, creating a custom Response.Filter transformation becomes as simple as the following code. To hook up the Response.Filter using the MemoryStream version event: ResponseFilterStream filter = new ResponseFilterStream(Response.Filter); filter.TransformStream += filter_TransformStream; Response.Filter = filter; and the event handler to do the transformation: MemoryStream filter_TransformStream(MemoryStream ms) { Encoding encoding = HttpContext.Current.Response.ContentEncoding; string output = encoding.GetString(ms.ToArray()); output = FixPaths(output); ms = new MemoryStream(output.Length); byte[] buffer = encoding.GetBytes(output); ms.Write(buffer,0,buffer.Length); return ms; } private string FixPaths(string output) { string path = HttpContext.Current.Request.ApplicationPath; // override root path wonkiness if (path == "/") path = ""; output = output.Replace("\"~/", "\"" + path + "/").Replace("'~/", "'" + path + "/"); return output; } The idea of the event handler is that you can do whatever you want to the stream and return back a stream – either the same one that’s been modified or a brand new one – which is then sent back to as the final response. The above code can be simplified even more by using the string version events which handle the stream to string conversions for you: ResponseFilterStream filter = new ResponseFilterStream(Response.Filter); filter.TransformString += filter_TransformString; Response.Filter = filter; and the event handler to do the transformation calling the same FixPaths method shown above: string filter_TransformString(string output) { return FixPaths(output); } The events for capturing output and capturing and transforming chunks work in a very similar way. By using events to handle the transformations ResponseFilterStream becomes a reusable component and we don’t have to create a new stream class or subclass an existing Stream based classed. By the way, the example used here is kind of a cool trick which transforms “~/” expressions inside of the final generated HTML output – even in plain HTML controls not HTML controls – and transforms them into the appropriate application relative path in the same way that ResolveUrl would do. So you can write plain old HTML like this: <a href=”~/default.aspx”>Home</a>  and have it turned into: <a href=”/myVirtual/default.aspx”>Home</a>  without having to use an ASP.NET control like Hyperlink or Image or having to constantly use: <img src=”<%= ResolveUrl(“~/images/home.gif”) %>” /> in MVC applications (which frankly is one of the most annoying things about MVC especially given the path hell that extension-less and endpoint-less URLs impose). I can’t take credit for this idea. While discussing the Response.Filter issues on Twitter a hint from Dylan Beattie who pointed me at one of his examples which does something similar. I thought the idea was cool enough to use an example for future demos of Response.Filter functionality in ASP.NET next I time I do the Modules and Handlers talk (which was great fun BTW). How practical this is is debatable however since there’s definitely some overhead to using a Response.Filter in general and especially on one that caches the output and the re-writes it later. Make sure to test for performance anytime you use Response.Filter hookup and make sure it' doesn’t end up killing perf on you. You’ve been warned :-}. How does ResponseFilterStream work? The big win of this implementation IMHO is that it’s a reusable  component – so for implementation there’s no new class, no subclassing – you simply attach to an event to implement an event handler method with a straight forward signature to retrieve the stream or string you’re interested in. The implementation is based on a subclass of Stream as is required in order to handle the Response.Filter requirements. What’s different than other implementations I’ve seen in various places is that it supports capturing output as a whole to allow retrieving the full response output for capture or modification. The exception are the TransformWrite and TransformWrite events which operate only active chunk of data written by the Response. For captured output, the Write() method captures output into an internal MemoryStream that is cached until writing is complete. So Write() is called when ASP.NET writes to the Response stream, but the filter doesn’t pass on the Write immediately to the filter’s internal stream. The data is cached and only when the Flush() method is called to finalize the Stream’s output do we actually send the cached stream off for transformation (if the events are hooked up) and THEN finally write out the returned content in one big chunk. Here’s the implementation of ResponseFilterStream: /// <summary> /// A semi-generic Stream implementation for Response.Filter with /// an event interface for handling Content transformations via /// Stream or String. /// <remarks> /// Use with care for large output as this implementation copies /// the output into a memory stream and so increases memory usage. /// </remarks> /// </summary> public class ResponseFilterStream : Stream { /// <summary> /// The original stream /// </summary> Stream _stream; /// <summary> /// Current position in the original stream /// </summary> long _position; /// <summary> /// Stream that original content is read into /// and then passed to TransformStream function /// </summary> MemoryStream _cacheStream = new MemoryStream(5000); /// <summary> /// Internal pointer that that keeps track of the size /// of the cacheStream /// </summary> int _cachePointer = 0; /// <summary> /// /// </summary> /// <param name="responseStream"></param> public ResponseFilterStream(Stream responseStream) { _stream = responseStream; } /// <summary> /// Determines whether the stream is captured /// </summary> private bool IsCaptured { get { if (CaptureStream != null || CaptureString != null || TransformStream != null || TransformString != null) return true; return false; } } /// <summary> /// Determines whether the Write method is outputting data immediately /// or delaying output until Flush() is fired. /// </summary> private bool IsOutputDelayed { get { if (TransformStream != null || TransformString != null) return true; return false; } } /// <summary> /// Event that captures Response output and makes it available /// as a MemoryStream instance. if (!IsOutputDelayed) _stream.Write(buffer, offset, buffer.Length); } } The key features are the events and corresponding OnXXX methods that handle the event hookups, and the Write() and Flush() methods of the stream implementation. All the rest of the members tend to be plain jane passthrough stream implementation code without much consequence. I do love the way Action<t> and Func<T> make it so easy to create the event signatures for the various events – sweet. A few Things to consider Performance Response.Filter is not great for performance in general as it adds another layer of indirection to the ASP.NET output pipeline, and this implementation in particular adds a memory hit as it basically duplicates the response output into the cached memory stream which is necessary since you may have to look at the entire response. If you have large pages in particular this can cause potentially serious memory pressure in your server application. So be careful of wholesale adoption of this (or other) Response.Filters. Make sure to do some performance testing to ensure it’s not killing your app’s performance. Response.Filter works everywhere A few questions came up in comments and discussion as to capturing ALL output hitting the site and – yes you can definitely do that by assigning a Response.Filter inside of a module. If you do this however you’ll want to be very careful and decide which content you actually want to capture especially in IIS 7 which passes ALL content – including static images/CSS etc. through the ASP.NET pipeline. So it is important to filter only on what you’re looking for – like the page extension or maybe more effectively the Response.ContentType. Response.Filter Chaining Originally I thought that filter chaining doesn’t work at all due to a bug in the stream implementation code. But it’s quite possible to assign multiple filters to the Response.Filter property. So the following actually works to both compress the output and apply the transformed content: WebUtils.GZipEncodePage(); ResponseFilterStream filter = new ResponseFilterStream(Response.Filter); filter.TransformString += filter_TransformString; Response.Filter = filter; However the following does not work resulting in invalid content encoding errors: ResponseFilterStream filter = new ResponseFilterStream(Response.Filter); filter.TransformString += filter_TransformString; Response.Filter = filter; WebUtils.GZipEncodePage(); In other words multiple Response filters can work together but it depends entirely on the implementation whether they can be chained or in which order they can be chained. In this case running the GZip/Deflate stream filters apparently relies on the original content length of the output and chokes when the content is modified. But if attaching the compression first it works fine as unintuitive as that may seem. • Hard drive mounted at / , duplicate mounted hard drive after using MountManager

    - by HellHarvest
    possible duplicate post I'm running 12.04 64bit. My system is a dual boot for both Ubuntu and Windows7. Both operating systems are sharing the drive named "Elements". My volume named "Elements" is a 1TB SATA NTFS hard drive that shows up twice in the side bar in nautilus. One of the icons is functional and even has the convenient "eject" icon next to it. Below is a picture of the left menu in Nautilus, with System Monitor-File Systems tab open on top of it. Can someone advise me about how to get rid of this extra icon? I think the problem is much more deep-rooted than just a GUI glitch on Nautilus' part. The other icon does nothing but spit out the following error when I click on it (image below). This only happened AFTER I tried using Mount Manager to automate mounting the drive at start up. I've already uninstalled Mount Manager, and restarted, but the problem didn't go away. The hard drive does mount automatically now, so I guess that's cool. But now, every time I boot up now and open Nautilus, BOTH of these icons appear, one of which is fictitious and useless. According to the image above and the outputs of several other commands, it appears to be mounted at / In which case, no matter where I am in Nautilus when I try to click on that icon, of course it will tell me that that drive is in use by another program... Nautilus. I'm afraid of trying to unmount this hard drive (sdb6) because of where it appears to be mounted. I'm kind of a noob, and I have this gut feeling that tells me trying to unmount a drive at / will destroy my entire file system. This fear was further strengthened by the output of "$ fsck" at the very bottom of this post. Error immediately below when that 2nd "Elements" hard drive is clicked in Nautilus: Unable to mount Elements Mount is denied because the NTFS volume is already exclusively opened. The volume may be already mounted, or another software may use it which could be identified for example by the help of the 'fuser' command. It's odd to me that that error message above claims that it's an NTFS volume when everything else tell me that it's an ext4 volume. The actual hard drive "Elements" is in fact an NTFS volume. • What GPT partition type to use for protecting DRBD metadata?

    - by Carsten Scholtes
    I'm planning to install a DRBD device on a (replicated) disk with two GPT partitions. DRBD requires some space for (preferentially "internal") metadata at the end of the underlying device. I'm hesitant to leave this space unpartitionend (or unformatted in a normal partition). I'd like to reserve an extra partition at the end of the underlying disk device for the metadata. (If I understand correctly, DRBD would not care about the partition or its type and could then use that space exclusively.) My question is: Which would be a suitable GPT partition type for such a metadata partition? It should not be a type interpreted while booting (such as EF00 EFI System). It should not be a type prone to be modified accidentialy by the booted OS (such as 8200 Linux swap, 8e00 Linux LVM, fd00 Linux raid). (The booted OS will be Ubuntu Linux 12.04.3.) It should not be a type indicating a normal filesystem (such as 0c01 or 8301), prone to be formatted correspondingly. It should not be a type requiring any special content in the partition (since the content is to be handled exclusively by DRBD). It should express the purpose of being reserved for something special (namely DRBD). (The types I listed are as provided by gdisk. I'm thinking about using some type unlikely to be used by the OS (maybe bf0a Solaris Reserved 4) or an invented(?) type such as fd01 (close to fd00 Linux raid…). Would something like this be suitable, too dangerous or even possible?)
