• Linux USB/Serial port won't create a tty device in /dev

  I am connecting a USB to serial driver port to my system and I get about halfway to where I need to go. When it is plugged in dmesg indicates: <6>usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using sl811-hcd and address 4 <6>usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice and lsusb Bus 2 Device 4: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port Bus 2 Device 1: ID 0000:0000 Bus 1 Device 1: ID 0000:0000 I get a series of usbdev2.4 (usbdev2.4, usbdev2.4_ep00, etc) devices in dev but no ttyUSB0 or anything that I can open with minicom.   Is there a Linux utility that can create NTFS symbolic links? That is, a link on an NTFS partition that points to another NTFS folder - one that will work within Windows 7, specifically. I wish to relocate a folder that is normally in-use while Windows is running. This machine can already dual-boot into Ubuntu, so I'd like to leverage that. EDIT: To keep this from potentially turning into "which Windows Live CD is best", I will limit this question to "Is it possible with Linux, yes or no?"

• Clone MySQL DB - errors with CREATE VIEW/SHOW VIEW privileges

  Running MySQL 5.0.32 on Debian 4.0 (Etch). I'm trying to clone a WordPress MySQL database completely (structure and data) on the same server. I tried a dump to an .sql file and an import into a new empty database from the command line, but the import fails with errors saying the user does not have the "SHOW VIEW" or "CREATE VIEW" privilege. Trying it with PHPMyAdmin doesn't work either. I also tried doing this with the MySQL root user (not named "root" though) and it shows an "Access Denied" error. I'm terribly confused as to where the problem is. Any pointers on cloning a MySQL DB and granting all privileges to a user account would be great (specifically for MySQL 5.0.32). Thanks!

• Looking for WYSIWYG tool to create and edit HTML5 based presentations (slides)

  There are a lot of different implementations for HTML5 based slide presentations out there, like Google Slides or S5. But all that I have seen so far, seem to need a person being able to (and willing to) read and write HTML-Code. My company still uses Powerpoint, but some people are quite unhappy about its limitedness, e.g. the lack of possibilites to embed animation (other than just appear/disappear) without using flash. I'd love to suggest a state-of-the-art solution based on HTML5, but I don't even need to think about suggesting a solution where the project people need a techie to add or edit the content of a slide. I am not looking for an editor for non-technies to create complex HTML5/javascript based animations, of course, those should be done by a developer... basically non-technies should be capable of doing the stuff they are doing in powerpoint now.   I'm trying to create a direct connection to a hardware device via RS232 serial connection. Am using a USB to Serial adapter and works fine in WinXP but the option seems to have disappeared in Win7. This is the only connection option available for this piece of hardware so I have no choice. Currently have a netbook with WinXP installed purely for interfacing with this hardware. In XP it was just a matter of creating an "Advanced connection" and then "Directly to another computer" etc, I can find no such options in Win7.

  I have a company website written in vb.net. There are 5 master pages. I recently began utilizing a forum application, also asp.net 4.0, but this one is written in C#. My forum directory is domain.com/knowledgebase/. Is there any possible way to take one of my vb.net master pages and somehow integrate into the /knowledgebase/ directory?   I've spent the last two hours trying to create an FTP user so I can transfer some files over to my Wordpress blog folder. /var/www/sergiotapia.me I'm using vsftpd and Ubuntu 12.04 for my FTP server and I've read tons of documentation, none of which seem to work. I still cannot log in with the FTP user, let alone test if I even have the read/write file permissions. Can a Linux guru here, help me out with a small step by step? I'm comfortable with the terminal and nano, so that's not an issue - I'll SSH into my box. Just tell me what to do and what commands to run. Specifically, this user needs to have read and write access to the /var/ folder and anything within it. I want to have 1 user that can do whatever the heck he wants on my Ubuntu 12.04 VPS machine.

  I want to create an encrypted tar but also I want to have a log of what tar has compressed, I'm using the following command: tar -cvvf - --files-from=/root/backup.cfg | openssl des3 -salt -k backuppass | dd of=/root/tmp/back.encrypted But I need to have a log of tar's stdout. I don't know how to get it, because If I use "" in tar command openssl result is not correct. • Unable to create a Windows 7 system image of a failing hard drive

  The hard disk of my one year old T400 Thinkpad has started failing periodic hardware tests. I get a "Targeted Read Test Failed" error. The "SMART short self test" times out. I am now trying to create a Windows 7 System image of the hard disk but it fails without giving any specific error messages. I tried using Comodo Backup but got an error (code 101117) there as well. I have copied the important files in Dropbox but would like to take a full System backup as I have plenty of software installed on the machine. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can take a backup of the system image ?

  I'm currently wanting to deploy a setup to around 300 Macs. I have most of it scripted, but I'm having trouble creating a working alias to a samba share from the command line. I tried copying it from one Mac to another, but it loses its status as an alias, and instead OSX opens it in TextEdit. From a hexdump, it also looks like it has machine-specific information. So, say I wanted to create an alias to 'smb://server/share' on the desktop from the command line, how would I do that? I have also tried a tell in AppleScript, but it complained about the syntax (specifically, too many slashes, seemingly taking about smb://). Thanks.

• Cannot create persistent "open with" association for Photoshop CS4

  I'm trying to fix a computer from a friend, which has for some unknonwn reason installed the 64bit and 32bit version of CS4. The 64bit version does not work, the 32bit does. However it seems that the 64bit version was the first installed one, associations to the .psd files are going to the 64bit version. There seems no way to create an association with only the 32bit version. When I select open with` and I browse to the 32bit version and select open, it does not get added to the list of applications? Update: Unfortunately the problem just went away. It's annoying as the root cause is likely never to be found, I'm accepting Fopedush's answer for this "detailness".

  I have an Excel workbook with an index page containing a series of images, that are each hyperlinked to different worksheets. Can anybody suggest how I can publish this to PDF so that the hyperlinks work in the PDF? When I publish or use PDF Factory, the hyperlinks are not preserved (and bookmarks aren't created for that matter either). I would prefer to do this with inbuilt functionality or free tools, though any suggestions welcome. Also, it doesn't necessarily have to be with Excel. Publishing from powerpoint would be almost as good, and failing that, any easy solution which allows me to create a PDF containing clickable images that takes one to internal bookmarks might also be a workaround.

  For some time now, when buying new computers (laptops in particular) from big name brands-like DELL, HP, TOSHIBA, etc.-most of them come with a "rescue" or "restore" partion instead of installation CD/DVD. Said partitions have everything needed to rebuild the factory installed OS, unfortunately they also include all crapware that the OEM installed on the machine. Is it there a way to custom create such a partition with out all the useless software included?. They seem quite appealing considering they only use about 10GB-20GB of space and offer the pretty much the same functionality as a complete system image/backup.

  Hi, I have 2 machines. Both running CentOS. Box1 is webserver with apache, php. Box2 is mysql, and file storage. The files will only be accessible from Box1 within the webapp. I'd like to somehow create a symlink or somesuch on box1 to a folder on box2 where uploaded files can be stored and retrieved. Security in mind, what would be the best way to go about linking these 2 boxes up in a transparent (to apache) way? NB: the boxes are connected directly to each other via a crossover cable; no lan access to box2. Much thanks!

  Using CentOS 6, logged in to MySQL as root, entering the command: create user 'user123' identified by 'pass123'; works fine. But when I try and give that user super user privileges with: grant all on *.* to 'user123' identified by 'pass123'; I get the error: ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) Then select * from mysql.user; shows that root has Y in all columns, so should have all privileges. I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me find why root is unable to grant privileges as I can't see why it wouldn't be working. Thanks

• Is it possible to re-create the Windows 8.1 install image after the upgrade

  I have downloaded and installed the Windows 8.1 upgrade from the Windows store. The hardware was a 64-bit Toshiba P50 laptop. I need to upgrade a second P50 and wish to do so without another 3.6Gb download (I tried the instructions here but never got the chance to create the installation media, nor was I asked for a product key). I saw mention on superuser of creating USB rescue media after installation and using that to clone the upgrade onto another machine. Is this likely to be a viable option?

• Problem transferring file to FTP server - 503 Could not create file

  I try to transfer a file from SSIS package to a FTP server provided by my client. When I try connecting and transfer using a FTP tool (WinSCP) manually it works fine and file was transferred. But when i use the ftp command in command prompt and try to transfer using "send" command i get an error "553 could not create file". This also happens from SSIS package. I'm not in control of the FTP server but if anyone can provide a solution I can pass it to the admin or anything to be done from my end?
