  I'd like to collect all WYSIWYG text editors for Java here. Some rules for entries: There must be a link to the project/product You must state whether it's open source or commercial Is it possible to extend the editor (add new features like a "violet centered sudoku")? Is that simple or complex? Does it come with lots of features (fancy character and paragraph styles with online spell checking for several languages in the same document) or just the basics (bold, italics, no underline)? List important dependencies (does it run on bare Java with Swing? SWT? MacOS?) Your personal opinion This list should help developers determine which editor to choose. I'm not looking for "the best" but more "what's there".

• Validating Internationalized URLs - Is this going to be a problem?

  After reading about the new Arabic URLs, and with more languages to come, how should URL validation be done for internationalized applications? Does the validation change at all and will existing solutions break? Is regex still a good approach? If so, what would that regex look like? If not, what's a good strategy? What are some good resources to read more on the topic? I ask this because it has the potential to cause a good many localized applications to have to be rewritten if they have to validate URLs at any point.

• Whats the best solution for a database used in conjunction with Maps in Android?

  Could someone please point me in the right direction. My project involves a database where users enter their address and other info from my website. This database is then referenced in my android application to show the locations of these addresses in my database. I have yet to start and just came up with this idea. My question is, what would be the best method to create a database easily modified through my website (mySQL, php, etc), and also easily referenced easily through Android and the Google Maps API? I need some ideas on the languages I will need to use to create this database and website so I can go buy the necessary books to start reading up. Thanks so much

• Relvance of 'public' contructor in abstract class.

  Is there any relevance of a 'public' constructor in an abstract class? I can not think of any possible way to use it, in that case shouldn't it be treated as error by compiler (C#, not sure if other languages allow that). Sample Code: internal abstract class Vehicle { public Vehicle() { } } The C# compiler allows this code to compile, while there is no way i can call this contructor from the outside world. It can be called from derived classes only. So shouldn't it allow 'protected' and 'private' modifiers only. Please comment.

• Singletons and other design issues

  I have worked using different languages like C++/Java and currently AS3. Most applications were computer vision, and small 2D computer games. Most companies that I have worked for, they use Singletons in a language like AS3, to retrieve elements or classes in an easy way. Their problem is basically they needs some variables or to call other functions from other classes. In a language like AS3, there is no private constructor, and they write a hacky code to prevent new instances. In Java and C++ I also faced the situation that I need to use other classe's members or to call their functions in different classes. The question is, is there a better or another design, to let other classes interact with each others without using singletons? I feel that composition is the answer, but I need more detailed solutions or design suggestions.

• Django 1.2 crash course needed

  I know Python but I've never used Django. What do I need to know about Django 1.2 to port my typical PHP CRUD web application in one weekend? (Yes I've read Joel Spolsky's Netscape article :-)) I'm reading this tutorial right now and it's excellent. I'm already playing around with inspectdb to generate my models from the existing schema. I'm planning to use the following features of Django this weekend: Fragment caching Static asset versioning (for far future expires) Schema migrations (or whatever they're called in Django) Auto-admin (and customize it later) The test framework ...other stuff I probably don't know about yet I'm familiar with all these concepts in other languages/frameworks, except for the ORM which I've never used. I know SQL pretty well though. Any links, sage bits of advice, gotchas, stuff not mentioned in the (excellent) tutorial/docs, or stuff that is mentioned but warrants repeating == very welcome. • What are good resources to learn Coldfusion for a job application...

  The job title is "ColdFusion Developer." I have bit's HTML and Javascripting experience, but mostly have worked in the "harder" languages such as C and C++ with occational flurries of assembly. I'm currently employeed, but in the current job climate I figure it can't hurt to be looking around and applying for other positions. Plus according to the friend who sent me the job posting, it is suppose to pay "very well." They left my office to work for this company themself so I figure it's a reasonable evaluation of the company. I don't know if there are any free tools that I could use to get my feet wet and bone up for an interview, or what sort of literature is decent for the ColdFusion. Plus any ideas on how to tune a resume for it would also be helpful.

• MustOverride Shared Methods in .Net

  Hi I have a few class's that inherit from a base class. I want to enforce that all of these Class's implement a shared method foo(). I am not able to create the following on the base class Public MustOvveride Shared Sub foo() as this is not allowed. I also cant create an Interface that defines a Shared Sub Foo() and implement that in my derrived class's, as this also is not allowed. Does anyone know how i should implement this? p.s i realise my example is in VB and i have also tagged C#, the same problem applies to both languages and presumably the same fix would apply.

• Multlingual redirect

  I want to ignore the post form in the django's internatonalization. I am using the django-multilingual app, so I have different fields for different languages in the db. I come up with this idea: For each language, from the index.html page, redirect to a different url (e.g. /en/ or /de/ or /zh/). And each view of this urls, set the session according to the language like this: def set_lang_en(request): request.session['django_language'] = 'en' render_to_response("home.html") def set_lang_zh(request): request.session['django_language'] = 'zh-cn' render_to_response("home.html") Interestingly, this does the job, but if i refresh the page again after redirection (home.html). Why it is like this? And how can solve this problem either in my direction or other one?

• Php/ODBC encoding problem

  I use ODBC to connect to SQL Server from PHP. In PHP I read some string (nvarchar column) data from SQL Server and then want to insert it to mysql database. When I try to insert such value to mysql database table I get this mysql error: Incorrect string value: '\xB3\xB9ow...' for column 'name' at row 1 For string with all ASCII characters everything is fine, the problem occurs when non-ASCII characters (from some European languages) exist. So, in more general terms: there is a Unicode string in MS SQL Server database, which is retrieved by PHP trough ODBC. Then it is put in sql insert query (as value for utf-8 varchar column) which is executed for mysql database. Can someone explain to me what is happening in this situation in terms of encoding? At which step what character encoding convertions may take place? I use: PHP 5.2.5, MySQL5.0.45-community-nt, MS Sql Server 2005.

  I am interested in getting a few Microsoft Certs and I am currently facing the option for .NET Framework app development language. My choices are C++, C#, and Visual Basic. I have some experience with Java and Visual Basic .NET but I honestly would like to know what the best would be for developing stand-alone applications in a workstation (local) environment.   I have a localized string which needs to take a few variables. However, in localization it is important that the order of the variables can change from language to language. So this is not a good idea: NSString *text = NSLocalizedString(@"My birthday is at %@ %@ in %@", nil); In some languages some words come before others, while in others it's reverse. I lack of an good example at the moment. How would I provide NAMED variables in a formatted string? Is there any way to do it without some heavy self-made string replacements? Even some numbered variables like {%@1}, {%@2}, and so on would be sufficient... is there a solution?

• how to change locale in URL using Routing Filter gem Rails I18n application?

  I installed and set up routing-filter as described on the gem documentation page. https://github.com/svenfuchs/routing-filter It works for the default locale. For example, if I set up my default locale as :en,the site is in English, and if I set my default locale as :zh, the site is in Chinese. www.site.com/zh/home (the default locale path /en is automatically added to the URL) But how can I make my site support BOTH languages? when the default locale is :zh, I tried to change the URL by substituting the "zh" with "en" but the page is still in Chinese, not English. Is this something not supported by the routing-filter gem? If not, is there some other gem I can use? Or have I not set up the routing-filter gem properly? Thanks!

• erlang io:format, and a hanging web application

  While I'm learning a new language, I'll typically put lots of silly println's to see what values are where at specific times. It usually suffices because the languages typically have available a tostring equivalent. In trying that same approach with erlang, my webapp just "hangs" when there's a value attempted to be printed that's not a list. This happens when variable being printed is a tuple instead of a list. There's no error, exception, nothing... just doesn't respond. Now, I'm muddling through by being careful about what I'm writing out and as I learn more, things are getting better. But I wonder, is there a way to more reliably to [blindly] print a value to stdout? Thanks, --tim

Making the conversion via PostGIS queries is another alternative. ...but did anyone implement this maths in ruby? OSGridToLatLong is the direction I'm looking for just at this moment, but I would have thought a library for converting in both directions must surely be available in a gem somewhere. I'm just not searching for the right thing.

  Hi, I'm very interested in learning about the new feature in html5 called web sockets. I've looked into it and have come out with a few questions. It seems that before I can start implementing this new technology into a web application of mine I need to have a web server which supports it. Does this involve downloading something and installing it on the said server? Is there more than one available? If so where do I find these? I already have experience with JavaScript and html/css of course, Are there any other languages I will need to learn to start using web sockets? • C# String Resource Values as Enum String Part values?

  Using VS2010 and .net V4.0 I would like to achieve the following: I already have 2 resource files in my project for 2 languages - English and Czech. I must say Resource Management in .net is excellent, I am suprised even to get code completion when implementing a String for example: string desc = Strings.ResourceManagerDesc This gets the string associated with the current culture of the thread. Now I am trying to create an Enum that can have the String portion of the Enum interpreted from the Strings resources. In the following way (This code DOES NOT WORK): public enum DownloadStatus { 1 = Strings.DownloadState_Complete, 2 = Strings.DownloadState_Failed, 3 = Strings.DownloadState_InProgress } This is a made up example, but you can see the point here. Since the above code won't work, is there a best practice way to achieve what I want?

Is there an API for accessing individual disk blocks from Java? or is there an API that can do similar block-oriented access that fits my purpose? • Possibility of language data type not mapped to shipped .NET Framework?

  Does anybody know of a managed programming language implemented on .NET that contains a specialized data type that is not mapped through to the Common Type System/FCL/BCL or one that does not have a shipped .NET equivalent (e.g. shipped standard types like System.String, System.Int32)? This question would likely come from the perspective of someone porting a compiler (although I'm not doing that). Is it as simple as the language creating a new data type outside the BCL/FCL for its specialized type? If so does this hinder interoperability between programming languages that are otherwise accustomed to mapping all their built-in data types to what's in the BCL/FCL, like Visual Basic and C#? I can imagine this situation might come about if an obscure language compiler of some kind is ported to .NET for which there is no direct mapping of one of its implicit data types to the shipped Framework. How is this situation supported or allowed in general? What would be the expectation of the compiler and the Common Language Runtime?
