  I am looking for something very close to an application server with these features: it should handle a series of threads/daemons, allowing the user to start-stop-reload each one without affecting the others it should keep libraries separated between different threads/daemons it should allow to share some libraries Currently we have some legacy code reinventing the wheel... and not a perflectly round-shaped one at that! I thought to use Tomcat, but I don't need a web server, except maybe for the simple backoffice user interface (/manager/html). Any suggestion? Is there a non-web application server, or is there a better alternative to Tomcat (more lightweight, for example, or easier to configure)? Thanks in advance.

• How can I use linq to build an object from 1 row of data?

  Hi All, I have a quick linq question. I have a stored proc that should return one row of data. I would like to use a lambda to build an object. Here's what I'm currently doing which works, but I know I should be able to use First instead of Select except I can't seem to get the syntax correct. Can anyone straighten me out here?   This question is based on http://stackoverflow.com/questions/359424/detach-subdirectory-into-separate-git-repository Instead of detaching a single subdirectory, I want to detach a couple. For example, my current directory tree looks like this: /apps /AAA /BBB /CCC /libs /XXX /YYY /ZZZ And I would like this instead: /apps /AAA /libs /XXX The --subdirectory-filter argument to git filter-branch won't work because it gets rid of everything except for the given directory the first time it's run. I thought using the --index-filter argument for all unwanted files would work (albeit tedious), but if I try running it more than once, I get the following message: Cannot create a new backup. A previous backup already exists in refs/original/ Force overwriting the backup with -f Any ideas? TIA

• How to preload local javascript everytime a new tab or page is opened?

  I would like to autoload a local javascript file, everytime a new page/tab is opened in a browser. I tried the bookmarklet approach, but it gets tiresome as the button needs to be pressed everytime a new page/tab is opened. Chrome extensions also seem to work along the same lines (where you have to press an icon to run the js). Googling for javascript and preload seems to return everything except what I am looking for. Is there a browser indepent way of autoloading (no user action required) a local js file? If not, any browser specific info to do this would be appreciated (even if they mean reducing security by turning off required options). Thanks!

• Is it possible to capture a "file not found" from another process and then return a file to that pro

  I have a legacy application that looks for files in a directory. It does not handle missing files very well. What I want to do is "capture" the file not found errors, and send another file back to the calling app instead. Similar to how you could handle a 404 error on a webserver and return something based on what the requested URL was, except on the local file system. Is this possible? And more preferably, is it possible in .Net?

• SQL Server Express 2008 Stored Procedure execution time spikes periodically

  I have a big stored procedure on a SQL Server 2008 Express SP2 database that gets run about every 200 ms. Normal execution time is about 50ms. What I am seeing is large inconsistencies in this run time. It will execute for while, say 50-100 times at 40-60ms which is expected, then seemingly at random the same stored procedure will take way longer, say 900ms or 1.5 seconds to run. Sometimes more than one call of the same procedure in a row will take longer too. It appears that something is causing sql server to slow down dramatically every minute or so, but I can't figure out what. There is no timing pattern between the occurences. I have the same setup on two different computers, one of which is a clean XP Pro load with no virus checking and nothing installed except SQL server. Also, The recovery options for all the databases are set to "Simple".

• What is the standard way to parse floats at runtime in C?

  Hello, I have a scientific application for which I want to input initial values at runtime. I have an option to get them from the command line, or to get them from an input file. Either of these options are input to a generic parser that uses strtod to return a linked list of initial values for each simulation run. I either use the command-line argument or getline() to read the values. The question is, should I be rolling my own parser, or should I be using a parser-generator or some library? What is the standard method? This is the only data I will read at runtime, and everything else is set at compile time (except for output files and a few other totally simple things). Thanks, Joel

  I've set up IIS6 with FastCGI to use php-cgi.exe. I have some php websites by external parties, that I'm trying to run in a test environment. One of the websites just plain gives me a FastCGI Error Page. Is there some way to enable logging somewhere so that I can get a bit more information on this problem? I have looked in - Eventlog - IIS Website log (c:\windows\system32\Logfiles) - PHP log But no results, except the IIS Website log mentions a return of a 500 page. Is there any other way to debug/check where things might be going wrong? Here is what the page looks like: FastCGI Error The FastCGI Handler was unable to process the request.   I'm trying to convert bmp files in a folder to jpg, then delete the old files. The code works fine, except it can't delete the bmp's.   Hi, I have a small jquery snippet that displays notification message at the top of the screen in response to user actions on a page. The notification is often displayed after Ajax actions with dynamic content inside it. For example: $("#mini-txt").html("Thank you!"); $("#mini").fadeIn("fast"); setTimeout(function() {$("#mini").animate({height: "hide", opacity: "hide"}, "medium");}, 3000); The notification works well, except when a user does two or more actions in rapid succession, in which case the TimeOut function will confuse itself and the second message appears to come inside the previous 3000 milliseconds. Is there a way to "kill" the previous notification if a new action is performed. I've got no problem with the actions/selectors, just the TimeOut function.... either stopping it or overriding it somehow. Or perhaps there's a better alternative for getting the message to linger on the screen for a few seconds before disappearing? Thank you.

  I want to make WPF window extended on the title area (like Office 2007/2010). I implemented DwmWindow (see DwmTest.zip) where I put required stuff. Commonly, it works fine except one disgusting thing: the window appears as white rectangle (see DwmIssue.png) and after a few second this rectangle disappears and the content of the window is shown (see DwmIssueCorrect.png). This bug is essential only for my window. • Flex Builder 3 executing old source codes

  I'm facing this problem again and again, but can't find any solution (except mine, which is not as a good one I guess). Don't know why, sometimes Flex Builder executes old source codes after making changes. While debugging I see how it steps through a source (e.g. changing local variables) which does not exist (even if I delete all that block or function). My way to solve that is to delete the project (backing up the source codes of course) and create a new one, add the backed up sources to the project and rebuild. It starts to work as it should work, but this way is not as comfortable, especially if sources are on a remote machine and you need to configure .net back-end. Anyone knows how to solve?

How to retrieve a list of Colors that are the gradients between the two? [full stop]) but never a partial sentences. Except if the last part of the string (as last part may not have any full stop. The string may contain HTML tags. But the tag can not be divided as ( to ). That means HTML tag should be intact. But starting tag and ending tag can be stay on different segment/chunk. I think regular expression with preg_split can do it.   This is for a web project so i have several classes that inherit from Web.UI. I only want to serialize very particular properties (basically, only local properties) I'm aware of the XMLIgnore property that can be placed on a property to ignore items, but this won't work in my context since that would require modifying a bunch of stuff that i really don't want to modify (and probably can't). So how do i tell the xml serializer to ignore everything except for X and Y or tell it to seralize just X and Y? i could just create my own xml in a string builder or something and if that's the only way, so be it. however i'm looking for a method that will employ the built in XML stuff.   i am using fancybox.net for my light boxes. it works great with images. but when i use iframe option i am having problems with encoding. i use hebrew and english and russian on my website. when i use UTF-8 on the iframe page i get squares instead of hebrew letters. when i change to iso-8859-8 i have hebrew but inverted, and russian goes: ??????????? any idea? my website is UTF-8 and every thing works great.. except fancybox :(

According to http://www.blackberry.com/developers/docs/4.5.0api/net/rim/device/api/system/PersistentObject.html, I need a PersistentObject, CodeSignKey, and ControlledAccess objects to work. I have everything except one piece: CodeSignKey codeSigningKey = CodeSigningKey.get( "ACME" ); here, I don't know what to replace for "ACME". Is this the PIN code I chose as I filled out the Code Sign Key? Is it my package name, output file name? The Blackberry API documentation doesn't seem to say anything about this particularly important parameter. Help please, thanks.

  A part of the application that I am working on is a legacy Vb6 Windows forms application. All the files in the project are under source control (VSS) except the Vb6 project file. From what I can establish from the other developers working on the project the reason for this is that the com components used in the projects have different references on each developers machine. I want to move the project files into VSS so that when files are added to the project these can be updated in the project files and other developers (and more importantly an automated build script) can get the latest project files from source safe. Does anyone know if/how I can achieve this in such a way as to not corrupt the references to other com components on different development machines?

  I am trying to make Weld, hibernate, jsf combination work on Jetty. The best approach I found on internet was http://www.laliluna.de/articles/2011/01/12/jboss-weld-jpa-hibernate.html . It was a pain to clean up the dependencies, but I managed to go through that. Now it works for me except the initialization part of the EntityManagerStoreImpl. It seems the weld listener for jetty does not produce a ContainerInitialized event, so the init method which observes this event is never called. Could you tell me please what is the best way to bootstrap this class in the jetty environment? thanks!
