• Using jQuery for client side validation in MVC2 RTM

  Scott Gu's tutorial on Model validation gets us all set up with the MS client side validation using the following scripts: <script src="../../Scripts/jquery.validate.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="../../Scripts/MicrosoftMvcValidation.js" type="text/javascript"></script> However I've seen various posts allowing us to utilise jQuery instead with the following code: <script src="https://ajax.microsoft.com/ajax/jquery/jquery-1.4.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="https://ajax.microsoft.com/ajax/jQuery.Validate/1.6/jQuery.Validate.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="<%= Url.Content("~/scripts/MicrosoftMvcJQueryValidation.js") %>" type="text/javascript"></script> However MicrosoftMvcJQueryValidation.js does not ship with the solution and from what I read it should be part of the Futures pack which is no longer available on CodePlex. I managed to find a version alongside jQuery 1.3.2 but it does not work. What is the forward going solution!?

  I've noticed that my GLSL shaders are not compilable when the GLSL version is lower than 130. What are the most critical elements for having a backward compatible shader source? I don't want to have a full backward compatibility, but I'd like to understand the main guidelines for having simple (forward compatible) shaders running on GPU with GLSL lower than 130. Of course the problem could be solved with the preprocessor #if __VERSION__ < 130 #define VERTEX_IN attribute #else #define VERTER_IN in #endif But there probably many issues that I ignore. • How can I get jQuery validation plugin Ketchup to stop an Ajax form submission when validation fails?

  I'm using Ruby on Rails, Formtastic gem, jQuery and ketchup to validate my form. I'm submitting the form created by Formtastic inside a modal box using ajax: <% semantic_form_remote_for @contact_form, :url => '/request/contact' do |f| %> I have a validation plugin verifying the fields on the form: $(document).ready(function() { $("#new_contact_form").ketchup(); }); The problem is that semantic_form_remote_for generates an onSubmit ajax request that the jQuery validation plugins won't prevent, since it's not a normal form submission. One question on stackoverflow suggests using :condition on the remote form declaration to fire a javascript function, but I can't do that since I'm not using a function, but rather relying on a jQuery handler. I also tried putting ketchup within a submit event handler: $(document).ready(function() { $("#new_contact_form").submit(function() { $('#new_contact_form').ketchup(); }); }); No luck. Form still submits. I also tried using the beforeSend option of jQuery.ajax: $(document).ready(function() { jQuery.ajax( { beforeSend: function(){ $('#new_contact_form').ketchup(); } }); }); Validation fires off, but form is still submitted. I switched to jQuery Validation plugin just to see if it was due to some limitation in Ketchup. It turns out that Validation has a submitHandler option: $(document).ready(function() { $('#new_contact_form').validate({ submitHandler: function(form) { jQuery.ajax({ data:jQuery.param(jQuery('#new_contact_form').serializeArray()), dataType:'script', type:'post', url:'/request/contact' }); return false; } }); }); This works when I use a regular semantic_form_for instead of semantic_form_remote_for, but alas, I would rather use Ketchup. Is Ketchup just woefully lacking? Am I forced to use jQuery Validation?

• Dynamic Google Maps API InfoWindow HTML Content

  I am working in Flash Builder 4 with Google Map's ActionScript API. I have created a map, loaded some custom markers onto it and added some MouseEvent listeners to each marker. The trouble comes when I load an InfoWindow panel. I want to dynamically set the htmlContent based off of information stored in a database. The trouble is that this information can change every couple of seconds and each marker has a unique data set so I can not statically set it at the time I actually create the markers. I have a method that will every minute or so load all of the records from my database into an Object variable. Everything I need to display in the htmlContent is contained in this object under a unique identifier. The basic crux of the problem is that there is no way for me to uniquely identify an info window, so I can not determine what information to pull into the panel. marker.addEventListener(MapMouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, function(e:MapMouseEvent):void { showInfoWindow(e.latLng) }, false, 0, false); That is my mouse event listener. The function I call, "showInfowindow" looks like this: private function showInfoWindow(latlng:LatLng):void { var options:InfoWindowOptions = new InfoWindowOptions({title: appData[*I NEED A UNIQUE ID HERE!!!*].type + " Summary", contentHTML: appData[*I NEED A UNIQUE ID HERE!!!*].info}); this.map.openInfoWindow(latlng, options); } I thought I was onto something by being able to pass a variable in my event listener declaration, but it simply hates having a dynamic variable passed through, it only returns the last value use. Example: marker.addEventListener(MapMouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, function(e:MapMouseEvent):void { showInfoWindow(e.latLng, record.unit_id) }, false, 0, false); That solution is painfully close to working. I iterate through a loop to create my markers when I try the above solution and roll over a marker I get information, but every marker's information reflects whatever information the last marker created had. I apologize for the long explaination but I just wanted to make my question as clear as possible. Does anyone have any ideas about how to patch up my almost-there-solution that I posted at the bottom or any from the ground up solutions? Thanks in advance, Peter Hanneman

I keep getting an SQLException stating that it doesn't work on FORWARD only resultSet. So how can i obtain this ResultSet with scroll_insensitive capabilites? Thanks in Advance.

  I'm switching from scala 2.7 and ordered to scala 2.8 and using ordering. It looks quite straight forward but I was wondering could I make it a little less verbose. • How do you remove invalid hexadecimal characters from an XML-based data source prior to constructing

  Is there any easy/general way to clean an XML based data source prior to using it in an XmlReader so that I can gracefully consume XML data that is non-conformant to the hexadecimal character restrictions placed on XML? Note: The solution needs to handle XML data sources that use character encodings other than UTF-8, e.g. by specifying the character encoding at the XML document declaration. Not mangling the character encoding of the source while stripping invalid hexadecimal characters has been a major sticking point. The removal of invalid hexadecimal characters should only remove hexadecimal encoded values, as you can often find href values in data that happens to contains a string that would be a string match for a hexadecimal character. Background: I need to consume an XML-based data source that conforms to a specific format (think Atom or RSS feeds), but want to be able to consume data sources that have been published which contain invalid hexadecimal characters per the XML specification. In .NET if you have a Stream that represents the XML data source, and then attempt to parse it using an XmlReader and/or XPathDocument, an exception is raised due to the inclusion of invalid hexadecimal characters in the XML data. My current attempt to resolve this issue is to parse the Stream as a string and use a regular expression to remove and/or replace the invalid hexadecimal characters, but I am looking for a more performant solution.

• Visual Assist X: curly braces are moving during refactoring

  I use Visual Assist X, build from 05.01.2009, but the same problem occurred in the previous releases as well. (I run it on MSVS 2005) When I do some refactoring (like extracting a method), everything's fine, but all the curly braces move forward. For example, before refactoring the code looked like this: while (expr) { doSmth(); } After refactoring: while (expr) { doSmth(); } So, I need to move manually all the brackets. Sure, the problem is minor, but it becomes annoying when you do a lot of refactoring. Is it a bug or just default settings? So, does anyone know a workaround?

  I am struggling to find a straight forward guide to creating office addins using VSTO and VB.net. Specifically I would like to know how to be able to create a addin/ dll which can either be referenced from VBA in the form:- Addin.method(argument) or Addin.property = X Or which would install its own custom toolbars/ ribbon interface to an aspect of office for example Word. I've checked MSDN and in terms of legibility and usability of the explanations I have drawn a blank so far. I currently have a requirement to create at least one addin for Office 2000 to run and manipluate SQL and then a suite of addins for a customized Office 2007 (Word) set-up.

• Getting Unexpected '<' in simple less than greater than comparison

  I feel very very very silly posting this, but I can't find the answer. I've searched google and here. // originally values in a multi dimensional array, but used simple values // to rule out errors. $somenumber = 1; $anotherone=5; if ($somenumber < $res->shares < $anotherone ) { blah } Get the error: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' Seems pretty simple and straight forward. Is there some weird thing that you can't compare multiple values? Do I have to explicitly type? It works in Perl. Which of course means that it has to work like this in everything else. ;)

• What are the most interesting equivalences arising from the Curry-Howard Isomorphism?

  I came upon the Curry-Howard Isomorphism relatively late in my programming life, and perhaps this contributes to my being utterly fascinated by it. It implies that for every programming concept there exists a precise analogue in formal logic, and vice versa. Here's an "obvious" list of such analogies, off the top of my head: program/definition | proof type/declaration | proposition inhabited type | theorem function | implication function argument | hypothesis/antecedent function result | conclusion/consequent function application | modus ponens recursion | induction identity function | tautology non-terminating function | absurdity tuple | conjunction (and) disjoint union | exclusive disjunction (xor) parametric polymorphism | universal quantification So, to my question: what are some of the more interesting/obscure implications of this isomorphism? • PHP Magento SOAP-ERROR: Parsing WSDL: Couldn't load from urlpath

  I am trying to create a soap client by passing a url that is hosted on my local machine, my dev environment and I keep getting this error. I use to be able to make this call and it worked just fine. Basically all I am doing is this $client = new SoapClient('http://virtual.website.com:81/api/?wsdl'); If I go to the url in a browser it comes up, so I know it is the right location. On the Magento forums there are some similar posts but I don't know that this is a Magento specific problem. Everything they mention as a solution I already have. They say to edit the hosts file for example 127.0.0.1 website.com I already have this since it is setup as a virtual host. • Re-send POST request easily - what tools?

  I am looking for an easy way to re-send POST request to the server within the browser mainly for debug purposes. Say you have a XHR request which contains POST parameters that is to be send to the server. After having changed the script on the server side, you would like to resent the very same request for analyzing the output. What tool could help? I guess it is a browser's extension. I already tried extension Tamper Data for Firefox which does the job as you can "Replay in browser". But for my taste, it is not enough straight forward, as there are 3 - 4 clicks to get the result of the request. Unfortunately, curl would not be suitable for my needs as my application has a session's cookie.

• Obj-C : Passing parameters back from a detailViewController in a navigation controller

  Hi I am using a navigation Controller on an iPhone app. I am able to pass data forward when I push a controller into the navigation stack but how do I pass data back when I pop the controller. What I am basically trying to achieve is the root navigation controller view displays a number of fields that can be edited. A user then clicks on one of the fields to be edited and a EditViewController is pushed onto the stack with the name of the field the user wants to edit. Now the users enters the new value of the field and presses save to pop the view controller. So how do I get the value from the editViewController back to the root navigation controller view?

It built successfully and I am able to view the grid control on the form. Now if i try to view that form in designer, I am getting following error..   I'm trying to create a DataGrid dynamically. Instead, I want to create the grid dynamically. Using FireBug I can see that the DataGrid widget is created but that it has no rows or columns. So my guess is that the datastore or layout are not being passed correctly. However, it does appear that at the point of creation the values of theStore and layout are correct. Suggestions please, or indeed a working example of a programmic grid might solve the problem.

• How do I create email addresses for DotNetNuke users using my domain ([email protected]

  My client wants to create email addresses for all their dotnetnuke users using their domain. The point is to keep the user's email addresses 'private' while still allowing communication through a public email address that they can control. It's not necessary to have a full webmail interface (although that would be nice). I'm thinking it would be enough just to forward any mail on and just act as a gateway. So if an email was sent to [email protected], it would be forwarded on to the email address associated with the dotnetnuke account with username 'rwain'. Is this possible to do in a shared hosting environment? Or do I need to create some custom mail server that does a conversion of the email address and forwards it?

• what is the global.asax Application_Start equivalent when using WAS in IIS7

  Hi I'd like to use the netTcpBinding for my WCF application which is currently hosted in IIS7, which means configuring it to use WAS instead. This is fairly straight forward however, my application previously made use of the Application_Start event in the global.asax file. I do not require access to the httpContext(which I understand access has been removed in IIS7), however I would still like to hook into the start or init methods? Does an equivalent exist when hosting an application in WAS as apposed to IIS7? Using classic mode is not an option(again I'm not interested in the httpcontext and this only appears to work if using an http binding) - and I've seen an example of putting a static class instide the app_code folder which looks like a horrible hack.

• Authkit - deferring action for HTTP '401' response to client application

  Form, Redirect and Forward all send an unauthenticated user to a Form on a login page specified within an Authkit middleware application. I'd like to allow a client application to request a service via XHR and then present a custom 'client side' form if a HTTP status code of 401 is returned, which would then post to Authkit for authentication until valid authentication/authorization occured. Specifically, 1) a jquery $.get request might request a resource. 2) if an Authkit cookie check confirmed previous authorization the content would be returned. 3) if not I would like Authkit to simply return the '401 response' (and not redirect to another page, or return a form template) where a client side exception handler would notify the user and present an authentication form. Can Authkit work like this?

  In the past I have primarily built all my web applications using an N-tier architecture, implementing the BLL and DAL layers. Recently, I have started doing some RoR development as well as looking into ASP.NET MVC. I understand the differences between the different architectures(as referenced by some other SO posts), but I can't really think of any reasons why I wouldn't choose an MVC model going forward. Is there any reasons/times in your experience when an MVC architecture would not be suitable, or any reasons why you would choose a BLL/DAL architecture instead?

  I've been looking at different tutorials and I know I'm close but I'm getting lost in implementation details because some of them are a little bit dated and a few things have changed since Firefox 3. I have already written the javascript for the firefox extension, now I need to make it into an XPCOM component. This is the functionality that I need: My Javascript file is simple, I have two functions startServer() and stopServer. I need to run startServer() when the browser starts and stopServer() when firefox quits. Edit: I've updated my code with a working solution (thanks to Neil). • Jquery AJAX and figuring out how NOT to nest callbacks for multiple reloads.

  I have a site with a few containers that need to load content dynamically via AJAX. Most of the links inside of the containers actually load new data in that same container. I.E: $("#navmenu_item1").click(function() { $("#navmenu").load(blah); }); When I click on a link, lets say "logout," and the menu reloads with the updated login status, none of the links now work because I would need to add a new .click into the callback code. Now with repeated clicks and AJAX requests I am not sure how to move forward from here, as I am sure nested callbacks are not optimal. What would be the best way to do this? Do I include the .click event inside the actual AJAX file being pulled from the server, instead of within index.php? Or can I somehow reload the DOM? Thanks for the help!

  Well, I have implemented a distinct query in hibernate. It returns me result. But, while casting the fields are getting interchanged. So, it generates casting error. What should be the solution? As an example, I do have database, "ProjectAssignment" that has three fields, aid, pid & userName. I want all distinct userName data from this table. I have applied query : select distinct userName, aid, pid from ProjectAssignment Whereas the ProjectAssignment.java file has the fields in sequence aid, pid & userName. Now, here the userName is first field in output. So, Casting is not getting possible. Also, query : select aid, pid, distinct userName from ProjectAssignment is not working. What is the proper query for the same ? Or what else the solution ?
