  • Macro vs. Static functions in Header

    for a lot of quick tasks where one could employ a function f(x,y), in plain C, macros are used. I would like to ask specifically about these cases, that are solvable by a function call (i.e. macros used for inlining functions, not for code expansion of arbitrary code). Typically C functions are not inlined since they might be linked to from other C files. However, static C functions are only visible from within the C file they are defined in. Therefore they can be inlined by compilers. I have heard that a lot of macros should be replaced by turning them into static functions, because this produces safer code. Are there cases where this is a not good idea? Again: Not asking about Code-Production macros with ## alike constructs that cannot at all be expressed as a function.

  • UI font has rendering glitches in GNOME Shell

    I don't really know how to describe this problem in English. A picture can say more words - look at the tabs at the top of the linked image. The current font settings are shown as well. I don't know what basic info I should provide so if something missing, please tell me. Ubuntu 12.04 GNOME Shell 3.4.1 I know, a reboot can make everything normal but I'm looking for a more permanent solution that can fix this problem (or bug).   • Implementing a list with unique_ptr<>? [migrated]

    As I understand it, a unique_ptr signifies exclusive ownership. A singly linked list seems to fit this, with each node owning the next, like (pseduocode alert) class node{ public: unique_ptr<node> next; int value; }; but I don't understand how to perform operations like traversing the list, where I'm used to doing here=here->next; How do you implement data structures using unique_ptr's? Are they the right tool for the job?

    I use Ubuntu One to synch my home/Documents folder among more computers. On a portable tablet I have set the Documents folder in a separate Fat32 partition named sda6, and I made it default documents folder with Ubuntu Tweaks. How do I synchronize it with my /Documents cloud ? I tried to link /sda/Documents in my home folder but it didn't succeed: UbuntuOne still tries to set an own Documents folder and doesn't let me sync the linked folder with the cloud.     I run several different web pages on different servers (with different IP addresses). These pages are linking to each other in order to boost number of back links pointing to my pages. I would like to move all those projects to a single virtual host (with a single IP address). My question is, how google handles links within different domain names but same ip address. Is there some penalization for it? Could this lead to lower page rank?

    I have a static pages with dynamically expanding content that google is indexing. I also have deep links into virtually duplicate pages which will pre-expand the relevant section of content into the relevant section. It seems like Google is ignoring all my specialized pages and not putting them in the index. Even after going through web-masters tools, crawling and submitting them to the index manually. I also use the google API for integrating search on the site, and the deep linked pages won't show up. Is there a good solution for this?
