• MapView EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) and KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS

  I'm having some 'issues' with my application... well, it crashes in an UIViewController that is presented modally, there the user enters information through UITextFields and his location is tracked by a MapView. Lets call this view controller "MapViewController" When the user submits the form, I call a different ViewController - modally again - that processes this info and a third one answers accordingly, then go back to a MenuVC using unwinding segues, which then calls MapViewController and so on. This sequence is repeated many times, but it always crashes in MapViewController. Looking at the crash log, I think that the MapView can be the problem of this or some element in the UI (because of the UIKit framework). I tried to use NSZombie in order to track a memory issue but it doesn't give me a clue about whats happening. • Automatically restarting Erlang applications

  I recently ran into a bug where an entire Erlang application died, yielding a log message that looked like this: =INFO REPORT==== 11-Jun-2010::11:07:25 === application: myapp exited: shutdown type: temporary I have no idea what triggered this shutdown, but the real problem I have is that it didn't restart itself. Instead, the now-empty Erlang VM just sat there doing nothing. Now, from the research I've done, it looks like there are other "start types" you can give an application: 'transient' and 'permanent'. If I start a Supervisor within an application, I can tell it to make a particular process transient or permanent, and it will automatically restart it for me. However, according to the documentation, if I make an application transient or permanent, it doesn't restart it when it dies, but rather it kills all the other applications as well. What I really want to do is somehow tell the Erlang VM that a particular application should always be running, and if it goes down, restart it. Is this possible to do? (I'm not talking about implementing a supervisor on top of my application, because then it's a catch 22: what if my supervisor process crashes? I'm looking for some sort of API or setting that I can use to have Erlang monitor and restart my application for me.) Thanks!

• Fitting Text into an Image

  Hello all, I have a function which takes in a font (ttf or otf file) and generates an image of text in different fonts. The problem I have is trying to work out how I can make the text fit in the image regardless of the font-size, type of font, and amount of text. I have tried to make the image rectangle variable so that it contains the text of different fonts without cutting a bit of the text since the image is not long or wide enough. • Saving a single entity instead of the entire context - revisited

  I’m looking for a way to have fine grained control over what is saved using Entity Framework, rather than the whole ObjectContext.SaveChanges(). My scenario is pretty straight forward, and I’m quite amazed not catered for in EF – pretty basic in NHibernate and all other data access paradigms I’ve seen. I’m generating a bunch of data (in a WPF UI) and allowing the user to fine tune what is proposed and choose what is actually committed to the database. For the proposed entities I’m: getting a bunch of reference entities (eg languages) via my objectcontext, creating the proposed entities and assigning these reference entities to them (as navigation properties), so by virtue of their relationship to the reference entities they’re implicitly added to the objectconext Trying to create & save individual entites based on the proposed entities. I figure this should be really simple & trivial but everything I’ve tried I’ve hit a brick wall, either I set up another objectcontext & add just the entity I need (it then tries to add the whole graph and fails as it’s on another objectcontext). I’ve tried MergeOptions = NoTracking on my reference entities to try to get the Attach/AddObject not to navigate through these to create a graph, no avail. I've removed the navigation properties from the reference entities. I've tried AcceptAllChanges, that works but pretty useless in practice as I do still want to track & save other entities. In a simple test, I can create 2 of my proposed entities, AddObject the one I want to save and then Detach the one I dont then call SaveChanges, this works but again not great in practice. Following are a few links to some of the nifty ideas which in the end don’t help in the end but illustrate the complexity of EF for something so simple.   I am having trouble solving a particular problem in Java (which I did not find by search). I do not know how to create a nested lists of objects - with a different type of object/primitive type at the end. For example: *Note: only an example. I am actually doing this below with something other than Employee, but it serves as simple example. I have an array of an object Employee. It contains information on the Employee. public class Employee { int age int salary int yearsWorking public Employee () { // constructor... } // Accessors } What I need to do is organize the Employees by quantiles/percentiles. No such luck.

• Random problem connecting to MySQL

  Environment: RHEL 5 servers, MySQL 5.1.43, PHP 5.1.6 (using MySQLi). Currently only available within our internal VPN network. Servers ServerA: Webserver ServerB/C/D: Database server (1 master 2 slaves) The error (on ServerA) [Tue May 25 11:12:17 2010] [error] [client CLIENTIP] PHP Warning: mysqli::real_connect() [function.mysqli-real-connect]: (HY000/2003): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'ServerB' (4) in /home/**/Database.php on line 67, referer: [website] Problem description It appears that at completely random times, our website is unable to connect to one of the MySQL servers - usually the Master. Except for the forementioned error message, there is nothing to be found in any of the logs as far as I can see, and most of the times the connection is succesful and everything works as it should. It's just at completely random times, this error pops up. There's no firewall blocking any internal traffic, timeout value is 3 but it doesn't take 3 seconds before it fails to connect. With the default mysql client I can connect from ServerA to ServerB,C and D and haven't encountered a problem yet. Does anyone have a clue what I might be overlooking / could be the problem? Because I've run out of ideas myself.

• Threadpool design question

  I have a design question. I want some feedback to know if a ThreadPool is appropriate for the client program I am writing. I am having a client running as a service processing database records. Each of these records contains connection information to external FTP sites [basically it is a queue of files to transfer]. A lot of them are to the same host, just moving different files. Therefore, I am grouping them together by host. I want to be able to create a new thread per host. I really don't care when the transfers finish, they just need to do all the work (or try to do) they were assigned, and then terminate once they are finished, cleaning up all resources they used in the process. I anticipate no more than 10-25 connections to be established. Once the transfer queue is empty, the program will simply wait until there are records in the queue again. Is the ThreadPool a good candidate for this or should I use a different approach? Edit: For the most part, this is the only significant custom application running on the server.

• What is wrong with this Fortran '77 snippet?

  I've been tasked with maintaing some legacy fortran code, and I'm having trouble getting it to compile with gfortran. I've written a fair amount of Fortran 95, but this is my first experience with Fortran 77. This snippet of code is the problematic one: CHARACTER*22 IFILE, OFILE IFILE='TEST.IN' OFILE='TEST.OUT' OPEN(5,FILE=IFILE,STATUS='NEW') OPEN(6,FILE=OFILE,STATUS='NEW') common/pabcde/nfghi When I compile with gfortran file.FOR, all lines starting with the common statement are errors (e.g. Error: Unexpected COMMON statement at (1) for each following line until it hits the 25 error limit). I compiled with -Wall -pedantic, but fixing the warnings did not fix this problem. The crazy thing is that if I comment out all 4 lines starting with IF='TEST.IN', the program compiles and works as expected, but I must comment out all of them. Leaving any of them uncommented gives me the same errors starting with the common statement. If I comment out the common statement, I get the same errors, just starting on the following line. I am on OS X Leopard (not Snow Leopard) using gfortran. I've used this very system with gfortran extensively to write Fortran 95 programs, so in theory the compiler itself is sane. What the hell is going on with this code?

• How to delete duplicate/aggregate rows faster in a file using Java (no DB)

  I have a 2GB big text file, it has 5 columns delimited by tab. A row will be called duplicate only if 4 out of 5 columns matches. Right now, I am doing dduping by first loading each coloumn in separate List , then iterating through lists, deleting the duplicate rows as it encountered and aggregating. The problem: it is taking more than 20 hours to process one file. I have 25 such files to process. Can anyone please share their experience, how they would go about doing such dduping? This dduping will be a throw away code. So, I was looking for some quick/dirty solution, to get job done as soon as possible. Here is my pseudo code (roughly) Iterate over the rows i=current_row_no. Iterate over the row no. i+1 to last_row if(col1 matches //find duplicate && col2 matches && col3 matches && col4 matches) { col5List.set(i,get col5); //aggregate } Duplicate example A and B will be duplicate A=(1,1,1,1,1), B=(1,1,1,1,2), C=(2,1,1,1,1) and output would be A=(1,1,1,1,1+2) C=(2,1,1,1,1) [notice that B has been kicked out]

But it doesn't work with other properties (those are not starting with the CCnet prefix) as LastChangeNumber or LastModificationDate. • "Too many indexes on table" error when creating relationships in Microsoft Access 2010.

  I have tblUsers which has a primary key of UserID. UserID is used as a foreign key in many tables. Within a table, it is used as a foreign key for multiple fields (e.g. ObserverID, RecorderID, CheckerID). I have successfully added relationships (with in the the MS Access 'Relationship' view), where I have table aliases to do the multiple relationships per table: *tblUser.UserID - 1 to many - tblResight.ObserverID *tblUser_1.UserID - 1 to many - tblResight.CheckerID After creating about 25 relationships with enforcement of referential integrity, when I try to add an additional one, I get the following error: "The operation failed. There are too many indexes on table 'tblUsers.' Delete some of the indexes on the table and try the operation again." I ran the code I found here and it returned that I have 6 indexes on tblUsers. I know there is a limit of 32 indexes per table. Am I using the relationship GUI wrong? Does access create an index for the enforcement of referential integrity any time I create a relationship (especially indexes that wouldn't turn up when I ran the script)? I'm kind of baffled, any help would be appreciated.

• Why does my Google maps api v3 and side panel not fill my page upon resizing?

  I'm developing a web page and I have a side panel on the left with a search bar and a Google maps api v3 filling the rest of the page to the right. When I make the browser very small vertically, there is a white space between the side panel and the map, and the bottom of the browser. However, the text continues to the bottom of the browser. So far the function is in use in 3 location. Each of them generates HTML using the same template under django. The function works perfectly in 2 of the 3 locations, and I"m plain stumped as to why the 3rd won't work. Below is the complete set of relevant javascript, the page load HTML for the relevant section. And 2 examples of HTML that is loaded through the script, 1 of them works, 1 of them doesn't and both are loaded into the same page load HTML Any ideas what I'm missing here?
