• SSH into Fedora 17 will not work with new users

  I just deployed a new Fedora 17 server on the Amazon EC2. I was able to log in as ec2-user with my generated keypair, but I cannot log in under normal circumstances as a user I created. • Windows 7: Menu 'New->Text document' is missing, when not admin user

  Hi, when I'm logged in as a user that is not member of the administrator group the entry to create a new textfile is missing from the right click "New" menu. If I give the user admin rights or start the explorer with admin rights the "New - text document" menu entry magically appears. As far as I can see the registry entries are correct. Anybody got a solution for that side effect of beeing a normal user in windows?? Regards

Right now, my battery is completely dead (it lasts for about 0.1 seconds), so I plan on buying a new one soon. Is there anything you can do to prevent Li-Ion batteries from going dead so quickly?

• Server suffering serious speed drop

  As you can see from the picture http://i.imgur.com/UpDZh.png), my server is suffering a serious drop in speed. This is intermittent and has been happening for the past 3 or 4 hours. The server has 1gbps uplink so I can't figure out why it's happening. Checking bandwidth monitoring tools like bwm-ng and dstat show normal speeds of like 150kb/s outbound traffic. Just now I was completely disconnected from SSH.

• How to convert or burn a .DMG image file on Windows?

  Does anyone have software they use frequently and can recommend to burn a mac created .DMG file on a windows operating system? Ideally free, or at least reasonably priced. Or an alternative application convert it to .ISO or something equivalent. I'm looking for reassurance I won't be wasting several (more expensive than normal DVDs) dual layer DVDs to get this done right. As the .DMG file is 7gig.

This works fine for normal music files, but now I am in a situation where I require visulizations for a live audio in feed. Is there currently any software out there that can be used to show visulizations for live audio, or even if nothing good exists, is there anyway to still use WinAmp for live audio ?

• Url rewriting stops working after changing default port on iis7

  I have migrated the IIS6 webserver 2003 websites to IIS7 webserver 2008 using msdeploy tool. Application pool setting are changed with "Enable 32-bit Applications=true", "Managed_Pipeline_Mode=Classic","Identity=NetworkService" Framework=v1.1/2.0. All the websites are working fine on default port along with url rewriting migrated from iis6. When I start the webserver on port other than default port by changing bindings, url rewriting stops workings and get 404 error in logs. I think I don't have to change the handler mapping cause I am running it in classic mode. How can I troubleshoot this?

• Overriding Debian default groups from LDAP

  This is a thing that has always bothered me: how am I best to handle Debian standard groups for LDAP users? Debian has a number of groups defined by default, e.g. plugdev, audio, cdrom and so on. These control access in standard Debian installs. When I want a user from LDAP to be a member of the `audio' group on all machines they log in to, I've tried a few different things: Adding them to the local group on the machine (this works but is hard to maintain) Creating a group in LDAP with the same name and a different GID then adding the user to that group (breaks reverse / forward GID mapping, doesn't seem to work) Creating a group in LDAP with the same name and same GID and adding the user to that group (doesn't seem to work at all, things don't see the LDAP group members) Creating a group in LDAP with the same name and same GID then removing the local group (this works but upsets Debian's maintenance scripts during upgrades that check for local system sanity) What's the best practice for this scenario?

• ByPass credential prompting on drive map - windows server 2k3

  I have 2 windows server 2k3 machines - server A and server B, Server A is on the company domain, and Server B is not. I have a need to bypass the credential prompting that happens every time I map a drive from Server B to Server A. The reason i need to do this is that I'm running a program called SourceAnywhere on Server A that points to a VSS database on Server B. (SourceAnywhere solves the slowness issues that VSS http access has). While I can configure SourceAnywhere to point to this VSS database (after mapping drive and getting access), I cannot connect to the VSS database from my development machine - i get an error saying I can access database alias.. I'm thinking this might have to do with Server B prompting me for credentials from Server A since it isn't on the domain. Is there anyway to store these credentials? or do i need to get Server B added to the domain?

I often watch live.twit.tv in my browser and I would like to run it maximized while I do other stuff on second screen, but when I click on a desktop the full screen mode rolls back to normal view. The same case is for different Flash players and I believe Silverlight players suffer from the same problem. Is there any way to bypass this behavior?

  Using the firefox extension tamper data (for modifing http requests that firefox makes) how do I insert a null character into a post field? I can enter normal characters, but binary characters in it are not urlencoded and are shown as is, so how do I enter the null character into a field? • More advanced 'Apple Automator' software?

  Is there any software similar to automator but more advanced? In our situation we have two files with the same name, one is a MOV the other XML. We want to use some of the metadata within the XML to rename both files. Then we want to re-arrange the contents of the XML file so that it is compatible with another piece of software we use (I think this is called mapping) Essentially some software that takes a bunch of variable from existing file and peforms file actions to them. I imagine this would be an easy task using applescript, but im wondering if there is a OSX application similar to Automator that can do the above? Questions are: Is there software that can do the above? Could Automator achieve this? What is the name of this process? If no such software exists, what would be the best kind of script to use? eg. Make an Apple Script, python script etc.

• how do I match movement of an object from 2d video into a 3d package ?

  I'm trying to add objects in a 3d package(Blender) using recorded footage. I've played with Icarus and it's great to capture the camera movement. Also the Blender 2.41 importer script works in Blender 2.49 as well. The problem is I can't seem to get 3d coordinates for objects. I have tried Autodesk(RealVIZ) MatchMover 2011 and gone through the tutorials. Tutorial 3 shows how to link a vertex from a 3d mesh to a 2d trackpoint, but the setup is for camera movement. Tutorial 4 goes into Motion capture, but it uses 2 videos of the same motion taken with 2 cameras from different viewpoints. I've tried to bypass that using the same footage twice, but that failed, as the 3d coordinate system ends up messed up. What software do you recommend for this (mapping 3d coordinates to 2d tracked points and importing them into a 3d package) ? What is the recommended technique ? Any good examples out there ?   Whenever I SSH somewhere I get something like this in the logs: sshd[16734]: reverse mapping checking getaddrinfo for 1.2.3.4.crummyisp.net [1.2.3.4] failed - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT! And it is right: if I do host 1.2.3.4 it returns 1.2.3.4.crummyisp.net, but if I do host 1.2.3.4.crummyisp.net it is not found. I have two questions: What security threat is there? How could anyone fake a one-way DNS in some threatening way? Do I have any recourse for fixing this? I'll send my ISP a bug report, but who knows where that'll go.

• Can't move or access WSS Central Administration site

  We have several WSS Servers: WSS1 WSS2 WSS3 WSS4 SharePoint thinks that Central Administration is on WSS3 and that it can be access via SSL on port 22641. The problem is that central administration is not there. It was removed using the config wizard. We removed central admin from all servers to clean everything out, and we tried installing Central Admin on WSS1. The alternate access mappings still point to central admin on WSS3. We tried deleting the alternate access mappings, but SharePoint won't let you delete central admin's mapping. Later, we removed central admin from all of our servers and tried creating the Central Admin website on WSS3, where SharePoint already thinks it is. But for some reason SharePoint is creating the alternate access mappings using SSL, and we don't have a certificate for the server. Why is SharePoint creating alternate access mappings routing an https internal URL by default? How can we move central administration to a new server? We are using WSS 3.0.

  I type echo $PATH on the command line and get /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/Users/andrew/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/mysql/bin:/usr/local/pear/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin:/opt/local/bin:/usr/local/git/bin I'm wondering where this is getting set since my .bash_login file is empty. I'm particularly concerned that, after installing MacPorts, it installed a bunch of junk in /opt. I don't think that directory even exists in a normal Mac OS X install. • How do I remove initial indents on numbered lists?

  In Word 2007 I want all numbers in a numbered list to be down the LH margin in line with the paragraphs. When a numbered list is selected, the numbers 1,2,3 are indented by a default 0.63cm. Ctrl-Shift-M will shift this indent back to the left margin. How do I permanently remove that initial indent and save that change to the normal template so that all new documents have zero indent on a newly inserted numbered list? (Same issue in Word 2010)

• How do I send traffic to specific IP addresses through VPN and others directly to the internet?

  I am running Windows 7 and using the Cisco VPN adapter to connect to a private network where I access resources starting with the IP address 172.. My problem is that when connected to the VPN all external traffic is routed through the VPN. I want to set things up so only certain IP addresses go through the VPN and everything else goes out over the local adapter and out to the internet as normal. How?

• Unable to map to web folder using WebDAV client on Windows Server 2008 R2

  I have a client running Windows Server 2008 R2 on several servers. One of the servers is also running SharePoint 3.0 and my client has created a web folder to map to. I can map to the web folder from all Server 2008 R2 boxes that have the WebDAV client (part of Desktop Experience feature) installed, except for the server the folder resides on. When I attempt to map to the web folder on the server which the folder resides, I am repeatedly prompted to enter my credentials. I am using the same account that I used to map the web folder on the other servers. I have also tried mapping from the command line and receive 'Access Denied' What may be causing the problem? I would think that if I can map to the drive from one server, I should be able to map the drive from the rest as long as the WebDAV client is installed, especially on the server where the folder is located.   Sorry that I can't be very specific, only symtoms are provided: Monday morning a CentOS box, 1GB ram, Pentium 4 web server (thin, rails) does not response (too slow) to a browser of another PC ping it, ok ssh into it, ok a few minutes later, the web server is back to normal speed, serving web requests well ping it, ok ssh into it, ok however, top does not run what should I look at, about this 'top does not run' symptom? thx
