  • strange run time error message from CIImage initWithContentsOfURL

    - by Adam
    When executing the following code I receive a run time error when the code executes the second line of code. The error (which shows up in the debugger) says: [NSButton initWithContentsOfURL:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x100418e10. I don't understand this message, because it looks to me (based on my source code) like the initWithContentsOfURL message is being sent to the myImage instance (of the CIImage class) ... not NSButton. Any idea what is going on? If it matters ... this code is in the Application Controller class module of an Xcode project (a Cocoa application) -- within a method that is called when I click on a button on the application window. There is only the one button on the window ... // Step1: Load the JPG file into CIImage NSURL *myURL = [NSURL fileURLWithPath:@"/Users/Adam/Documents/Images/image7.jpg"]; CIImage *myImage = [myImage initWithContentsOfURL: myURL]; if (myImage = Nil) { NSLog(@"Creating myImage failed"); return; } else { NSLog(@"Created myImage successfully"); }

  • Should I return an NSMutableString in a method that returns NSString

    - by Casey Marshall
    Ok, so I have a method that takes an NSString as input, does an operation on the contents of this string, and returns the processed string. So the declaration is: - (NSString *) processString: (NSString *) str; The question: should I just return the NSMutableString instance that I used as my "work" buffer, or should I create a new NSString around the mutable one, and return that? So should I do this: - (NSString *) processString: (NSString *) str { NSMutableString *work = [NSMutableString stringWithString: str]; // process 'work' return work; } Or this: - (NSString *) processString: (NSString *) str { NSMutableString *work = [NSMutableString stringWithString: str]; // process 'work' return [NSString stringWithString: work]; // or [work stringValue]? } The second one makes another copy of the string I'm returning, unless NSString does smart things like copy-on-modify. But the first one is returning something the caller could, in theory, go and modify later. I don't care if they do that, since the string is theirs. But are there valid reasons for preferring the latter form over the former? And, is either stringWithString or stringValue preferred over the other?

  • iPhone NSCFString leaks in fetchRequest

    - by camilo
    In the following code: - (NSMutableArray *) fetchNotesForGroup: (NSString *)groupName { // Variables declaration NSMutableArray *result; NSFetchRequest *fetchRequest; NSEntityDescription *entity; NSSortDescriptor *sortDescriptor; NSPredicate *searchPredicate; NSError *error = nil; // Creates the fetchRequest and executes it fetchRequest = [[[NSFetchRequest alloc] init] autorelease]; entity = [NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"Note" inManagedObjectContext:managedObjectContext]; [fetchRequest setEntity:entity]; sortDescriptor = [[[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"noteName" ascending:YES] autorelease]; [fetchRequest setSortDescriptors:[NSArray arrayWithObject:sortDescriptor]]; [fetchRequest setReturnsDistinctResults:YES]; searchPredicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"categoryName like %@", groupName]; [fetchRequest setPredicate:searchPredicate]; [fetchRequest setPropertiesToFetch:[NSArray arrayWithObject:@"noteName"]]; result = [[managedObjectContext executeFetchRequest:fetchRequest error:&error] mutableCopy]; // Variables release return result; } ... I Fetch notes for a given categoryName. When I'm running Instruments, it says that a NSCFString is leaking. I know leaks are mean for iPhone developers... but I don't have any idea on how to plug this one. Any clues? All help is welcome. Thanks a lot!

  • WebKitErrorDomain error 101

    - by Nam Young-jun
    The following code produces and error of: WebKitErrorDomain error 101 code: -(Void) searchBarSearchButtonClicked: (UISearchBar *) activeSearchBar { NSString * query = [searchBar.text stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString: @ "" withString: @ "+"]; NSURL * url = [NSURL URLWithString: [NSString stringWithFormat: @ "http://http://www.google.com/search?q =%, query]]; NSURLRequest * requestObj = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL: url]; [Home loadRequest: requestObj]; } -(Void) loadView { [Super loadView]; CGRect bounds = [[UIScreen mainScreen] applicationFrame]; searchBar = [[UISearchBar alloc] initWithFrame: CGRectMake (0.0, 0.0, bounds.size.width, 48.0)]; searchBar.delegate = self; [Self.view addSubview: searchBar]; } I don't speak english and rely on a translator. Because of the language issue could this be a keyboard problem, or an encoding problem?

  • NSMutableArray: count is a method or a property?

    - by Rafael Oliveira
    I want to verify if I'm in the last cell of the UITable. Should I use a NSInteger property in my controller and store the value of the count of the data (it's an NSMutableArray) that populates the table? I'm asking because I don't know if count iterates over all objects of the array to count or if it only gets me a value of a count property. What would be better ? store the value: myCount = [myArray count] use directly: [myArray count] store numberOfRows: myCount = numberOfRowsInSection:[indexPath 0] use numberOfRows directly: numberOfRowsInSection:[indexPath 0]

  • Where to #include?

    - by fuzzygoat
    In my past applications I have been #importing into my *.h files where needed. I have not really thought much about this before as I have not had any problems, but today I spotted something that got me to thinking that maybe I should be #import-ing into my .m files and using @class where needed in the headers (.h) Can anyone shine any light on the way its supposed to be done or best practice? gary

  • UIButton and UIControlEventState issue

    - by Typeoneerror
    I'm having a very specific "bug" in my iPhone application. I'm setting two images for the highlighted and normal states of a button. It works as expected when you "press" and then "touch up" at a slow pace, but if you click/tap it quickly, there's a noticeable flicker between states. Is this a known bug or am I setting the states incorrectly? Here's the code that creates the buttons: UIImage *normalImage = [[UIImage imageNamed:@"btn-small.png"] stretchableImageWithLeftCapWidth:10.0f topCapHeight:0.0f]; UIImage *highlightedImage = [[UIImage imageNamed:@"btn-small-down.png"] stretchableImageWithLeftCapWidth:10.0f topCapHeight:0.0f]; [self setBackgroundColor:[UIColor clearColor]]; [self setBackgroundImage:normalImage forState:UIControlStateNormal]; [self setBackgroundImage:highlightedImage forState:UIControlStateDisabled]; [self setBackgroundImage:highlightedImage forState:UIControlStateHighlighted]; [self setAdjustsImageWhenDisabled:FALSE]; [self setAdjustsImageWhenHighlighted:FALSE]; When a button is tapped it simply disables itself and enables the other button: - (IBAction)aboutButtonTouched:(id)sender { aboutButton.enabled = FALSE; rulesButton.enabled = TRUE; } - (IBAction)rulesButtonTouched:(id)sender { rulesButton.enabled = FALSE; aboutButton.enabled = TRUE; } Any thoughts on this quick-click flicker?

  • How to check if something is stored in CoreData

    - by Terrel Gibson
    Hi I want to be able to tore some information in core data and but i am unsure of how to check if the file was saved properly. I tried using NSLog but it returns null when its called. I have a dictionary which has a uniqueID and a title which I want to save. I pass this in along with the context of the database. I then sort the database to check if it has any duplicates or not, if not then I add the file. +(VacationPhoto*) photoWithFlickrInfo: (NSDictionary*) flickrInfo inManagedObjectContext: (NSManagedObjectContext*) context{ //returns the dictionary NSLog(@"Photo To Store =%@", flickrInfo); VacationPhoto * photo = nil; NSFetchRequest *request = [NSFetchRequest fetchRequestWithEntityName:@"VacationPhoto"]; request.predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"uniqueID = %@", [flickrInfo objectForKey:FLICKR_PHOTO_ID]]; NSSortDescriptor * descriptor = [NSSortDescriptor sortDescriptorWithKey:@"title" ascending:YES]; request.sortDescriptors = [NSArray arrayWithObject:descriptor]; NSError *error = nil; NSArray *matches = [context executeFetchRequest:request error:&error]; if (!matches || [matches count] > 1) { // handle error } else if ( [matches count] == 0){ photo.title = [flickrInfo objectForKey:FLICKR_PHOTO_TITLE]; //Returns NULL when called NSLog(@"title = %@", photo.title); photo.uniqueID = [flickrInfo objectForKey:FLICKR_PHOTO_ID]; //Returns NULL when called NSLog(@"ID = %@", photo.uniqueID); } else { //If photo already exists this is called photo = [matches lastObject]; } return photo; }

  • UITableView setting standalone delegate object?

    - by fuzzygoat
    Hi have setup a sample application using a UITableView. Initially I did this by conforming my controller to and , added a tableView in IB and connected "datasource" & "delegate" to Files Owner. It all works so thats good. What I have been trying out is creating my own class for the delegate. I created a new class and added and , but quickly found I could not connect the tableViewdataSource / delegate. To solve this I added an "Object" (NSObject) in IB and set it to my new class. I then connected the dataSource and delegate outlets to this object. It sort of works, the app runs and displays the tableView, but when I try and scroll the table the app crashes. Can I ask if I am going about this the right way? gary

  • presentModalViewController NOT animating when showing a TTMessageController

    - by wgpubs
    I have a subclass of TTMessageController that shows ... BUT it is not animated even though it should be. The code that displays the modal view looks like this (where PostToWebMessageController is the subclass of TTMessageController: if (self.toWebMsgController == nil) { self.toWebMsgController = [[PostToWebMessageController alloc] init]; } UINavigationController *navController = [[UINavigationController alloc] init]; [navController pushViewController:self.toWebMsgController animated:NO]; [self presentModalViewController:navController animated:YES]; What happens though is this: The screen goes black ... the keyboard scrolls up into view ... and THEN the TTMessageController view shows up (not animated). When I dismiss the view via a Cancel button the screen goes black and then just disappears (no animation again). Any ideas why this is happening? I've this with a number of other TT* controllers and I can't get one to animate right with showing modally. Thanks

  • Why does addSubview load the view asynchronously

    - by moshe
    I have a UIView that I want to load when the user clicks a button. There happens to be some data processing that happens as well after I call addSubview that involves parsing an XML file retrieved from the web. The problem is the view doesn't show up until after the data processing even if addSuview is called first. I think I'm missing something here, can anyone help? Code: I have a "Loading..." view I'm adding as a custom modal (meaning I'm not using the modalViewController). This action is linked to a button in the navigationController. - (IBAction)parseXml:(id)sender { LoadingModalViewController *loadingModal = [[LoadingModalViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"LoadingModalViewController" bundle:nil]; [navigationController.view addSubview:loadingModal.view]; [xmlParser parse]; }

    I set up a notification observer in my view controll init method like so: [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:@selector(saveState) name:UIApplicationWillResignActiveNotification object:nil]; Where is the best place to call removeObserver:name:object: for this notification. I'm currently calling it in my dealloc method, but wanted to know if that might cause problems.

  • iPhone memory management

    - by Prazi
    I am newbie to iPhone programming. I am not using Interface Builder in my programming. I have some doubt about memory management, @property topics in iPhone. Consider the following code @interface LoadFlag : UIViewController { UIImage *flag; UIImageView *preview; } @property (nonatomic, retain) UIImageView *preview; @property (nonatomic, retain) UIImage *flag; @implementation @synthesize preview; @synthesize flag; - (void)viewDidLoad { flag = [UIImage imageNamed:@"myImage.png"]]; NSLog(@"Preview: %d\n",[preview retainCount]); //Count: 0 but shouldn't it be 1 as I am retaining it in @property in interface file preview=[[UIImageView alloc]init]; NSLog(@"Count: %d\n",[preview retainCount]); //Count: 1 preview.frame=CGRectMake(0.0f, 0.0f, 100.0f, 100.0f); preview.image = flag; [self.view addSubview:preview]; NSLog(@"Count: %d\n",[preview retainCount]); //Count: 2 [preview release]; NSLog(@"Count: %d\n",[preview retainCount]); //Count: 1 } When & Why(what is the need) do I have to set @property with retain (in above case for UIImage & UIImageView) ? I saw this statement in many sample programs but didn't understood the need of it. When I declare @property (nonatomic, retain) UIImageView *preview; statement the retain Count is 0. Why doesn't it increase by 1 inspite of retaining it in @property. Also when I declare [self.view addSubview:preview]; then retain Count increments by 1 again. In this case does the "Autorelease pool" releases for us later or we have to take care of releasing it. I am not sure but I think that the Autorelease should handle it as we didn't explicitly retained it so why should we worry of releasing it. Now, after the [preview release]; statement my count is 1. Now I don't need UIImageView anymore in my program so when and where should I release it so that the count becomes 0 and the memory gets deallocated. Again, I am not sure but I think that the Autorelease should handle it as we didn't explicitly retained it so why should we worry of releasing it. What will happen if I release it in -(void) dealloc method In the statement - flag = [UIImage imageNamed:@"myImage.png"]]; I haven't allocated any memory to flag but how can I still use it in my program. In this case if I do not allocate memory then who allocates & deallocates memory to it or is the "flag" just a reference pointing to - [UIImage imageNamed:@"myImage.png"]];. If it is a reference only then do i need to release it. Thanks in advance.

  • UITabBarController "More" tab issues

    - by codemonkey
    I've got a UITabBarController with 7 tabs. Each of the 7 tabs has its own UINavigationController and customizes its toolbar. When a view is loaded via the UITabBarController's "More" menu its custom toolbar isn't appearing. If i switch the order of the views around so that the same view is now accessible from the UITabBar without going through the "More" menu then the custom toolbar shows up like it's supposed to. Is there a way to customize a NavigationController's toolbar when that NavigationController is loaded via the "More" menu of a TabBarController? I'm actually also interested in replacing the "More" menu navigation controller with my own custom one on views loaded via the "More" menu... not sure whether that's even possible. Any feedback will be appreciated.

  • UIActivityIndicatorView in a class without a view

    - by Structurer
    Hi I have defined a class that does a lengthy task and I call it from several other classes. Now I want to show an Activity Indicator while this task is doing it's thing, and then remove it once it's done. Since this is just a boring background task, this class doesn't have a view, and I guess that is where I run into my problem. I can't get this thing to show. This is what I have done in my class: UIActivityIndicatorView *activityIndicator = [[UIActivityIndicatorView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0.0f, 0.0f, 32.0f, 32.0f)]; [activityIndicator setCenter:CGPointMake(160.0f, 208.0f)]; activityIndicator.activityIndicatorViewStyle = UIActivityIndicatorViewStyleWhite; UIView *contentView = [[UIView alloc]initWithFrame:[[UIScreen mainScreen] applicationFrame]]; [contentView addSubview:activityIndicator]; [activityIndicator startAnimating]; // Do the class lengthy task that takes several seconds..... [contentView release]; [activityIndicator release]; I guess I do something wrong when I get the contentView, but how should I get it properly? Thanks for any advices...

  • Mac OS X Status Bar Application - Hiding it from Cmd/Alt menu?

    - by Moddy
    I'm trying to whip up a simple little Status Bar Application in Obj-C/Cocoa. So I have done it pragmatically - declaring an NSStatusItem, adding it to the NSStatusBar and then giving it a NSMenu object. A bit like this... NSStatusBar *bar = [NSStatusBar systemStatusBar]; theItem = [bar statusItemWithLength:NSVariableStatusItemLength]; [theItem retain]; [theItem setTitle: NSLocalizedString(@"Tablet",@"")]; [theItem setHighlightMode:YES]; [theItem setMenu:theMenu]; (Example taken from "Status Bar Programming Topics", Apple Documentation) Now ideally, I'd like this application to run and not be accessible from the CMD/ALT window changing "menu" (for lack of a better word), I've seen applications do it before and would like that really. The idea is I just want it to be accessible from every window, whilst not having its own NSMenu on the status bar, and whilst not being able to have it as the active application ( - so its not able to take over the whole Status Bar, and its not able to be seen through CMD/ALT) Additionally, I was wondering if the StatusBarItem supports the ability to drag-n-drop an item onto it? I'm not sure if thats a limitation of the NSStatusBar though. I've read up on deamons and agents, but that seems far too low level/over kill for such a simplistic app! Cheers in advance!

  • Process for linking static ObjC libraries in XCode

    - by madmik3
    I'm trying to link to a static library and I keep getting linker errors. I've found a few sites that post examples but I have not been able to see what I am doing wrong. First I create a project that will link to my lib add existing files find my .xcodeproj file select "Copy items into destination groups folder"... Select my host project as Add To Targets. Then I add a direct dependency to my host app expand targets double click MyHost.app click + under direct dependencies select my lib Then I set build flags double click MyHost application icon in Groups and Files. click the build tab then I set the OtherLinerFlag to -ObjC then I set Header Search Paths to my header file location for my static library. I pass the compile stage but any classes in my static lib cause linker error: literal-pointer@_OBJC@_cls_refs@SomeClass in MyHost.o thanks!

  • Why is autorelease especially dangerous/expensive for iPhone applications?

    - by e.James
    I'm looking for a primary source (or a really good explanation) to back up the claim that the use of autorelease is dangerous or overly expensive when writing software for the iPhone. Several developers make this claim, and I have even heard that Apple does not recommend it, but I have not been able to turn up any concrete sources to back it up. SO references: autorelease-iphone Why does this create a memory leak (iPhone)? Note: I can see, from a conceptual point of view, that autorelease is slightly more expensive than a simple call to release, but I don't think that small penalty is enough to make Apple recommend against it. What's the real story?

  • iphone scanning a dat file for data

    - by Brodie4598
    I am trying to remake a program I have made in C# in OBJ-C.In C# I used streamreader to search the data file for the line I am looking for then convert that line into a string that I can work with. I have looked at NSScanner but I'm not sure if thats quite waht I'm looking for but I'm by no means a cocoa expert. All I would like to be able to do is have it search a data file for an occurance of a string, then when/if it finds an occurance of that string, it returns the line that string was found on as a string. Any ideas?
