• Transition to new site

  I'm almost finished rewriting the website for a non-profit organization. The existing site receives ~5,000 a month. The new site is being written in ASP.Net and the existing site is PHP. The current hosting provider does not support .Net hosting, so I'll be switching providers. My question revolves around the transition from the old site to the new. I would really like to get the new site up at the new hosting provider and do thorough testing before changing the DNS records for the domain. Question: How can I put the new site up, test it, make any changes/additions necessary before updating the domain DNS to point to the new IP without Google indexing the content? Also, what SEO repercussions should I be aware of when making such a drastic change to the content that exists under the domain name?

• Documenting user interfaces in a mouse-less touch UI

  “Old” apps rely on mouse pointing and tooltips to explain what a given button is for. Maybe there is text associated with the button, but you can only put so much text without wasting useful screen state. More so in a phone or tablet app. I’ve seen a trend in Google apps where they put an overlay on top of the app the first time it runs, to explain how the various pieces of UI work. I have seen this also on my Nexus phone, but don’t have a screenshot. I don’t recall a way to actually bring that help overlay back again, so that’s maybe some built-in gesture that’s missing. • transferring files from PC to Ubuntu PC on same network

  i recently installed a fresh version of ubuntu 12.04 i wanted to transfer my old files from my pc that is running windows, to my other pc which now has ubuntu installed on it. They are both on the same network, i feel like this should be something easy to do, but i cant figure it out at all. Any help would be appreciated thank you. I downloaded and installed samba on my linux computer, and set up a share, but i can not find the directory on my windows machine. where do i find it?

• Reading cpu temperature Intel Celeron (R) with lm-sensors

  I know there are already a lot of questions like this, but non of the answers provided there could fix my problem. I try to read out my cpu temperature with lm-sensors on my ubuntu 10.04 LTS installation but I can't get to work. I did try the command sensors-detect several times but still nothing. My computer is an old PC with an Intel Celeron (R) @ 2.60 GHz. The odd thing is that the hdd temp is shown in the applet but when I type in the terminal sensors I get the error: "No sensors found! Make sure you loaded all the kernel drivers you need." I'm not really interested in the hdd temperature but I think it is strange that these sensors do work in the applet and not in the terminal. • Crappy school, what to do? [closed]

  I started programming fairly late. I am 24 years old and about to graduate from a local public university with a really poorly designed curriculum and teachers. Most of the work felt like busy work, and no matter how much I try, it all feels like a waste. I know what a good curriculum looks like. I know what books I should read, but alas it's not so in my university. There is no way at this point that I can catch up to those graduating from places like MIT. My question and this is a serious one: what do I do? Do I just postpone learning the theory I would have learned until later and focus on software engineering skills? How important is the theory in terms of landing a job in New York? Any particular things I should focus on to land a software engineer job? I am very motivated and I just wish someone would give me the time and a chance.

• What do you use to organize your team knowledge?

  Last year, me and three good old friends of mine founded a small web/mobile development team. Things are going pretty well. We're learning a lot, and new people are joining the group. Keeping knowledge always updated and in-sync is vital for us. Long emails threads are simply not the way to go for us: too dispersing and confusing, and hard to retrieve after a while. How your team manages and organizes common knowledge? How do you collect and share useful resources (articles, links, libraries, etc) inside your team? Update: Thanks for the feedback. More than using a wiki to share team common procedures or informations, I'd like to share external links, articles, code libraries, and be able to comment them easily within my team. I was particularly interested in knowing if you're aware of any way/webservice to share a reading list with a team. I mean, something like Readitlater/Instapaper, but for teams, maybe with some stats available, like "# of coworkers who read it".

• Ubuntu software center crashes when i try to download anything

  I was trying to set up an old printer by installing several drivers, and I got a problem in software center. I am unable to download anything from it. It opens, but when I try to download something it drops an error message and the installation stops. I can do all the installations from command line, so it is not a major problem, but still will be nice having it again. I reinstall it several times from terminal trying all the solutions I found in the forum, but still the problem is here. Any help is appreciated. • Using glReadBuffer/glReadPixels returns black image instead of the actual image only on Intel cards

  I have this piece of code glReadBuffer( GL_FRONT ); glReadPixels( 0, 0, width, height, GL_RGB, GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, buffer ); Which works just perfectly in all the Nvidia and AMD GPUs I have tried, but it fails in almost every single Intel built-in video that I have tried. It actually works in a very old 945GME, but fails in all the others. Instead of getting a screenshot I am actually getting a black screen. If it helps, I am working with the Doom3 Engine, and that code is derived from the built-in screen capture code. By the way, even with the original game I cannot do screen capture on those intel devices anyway. My guess is that they are not implementing the standard correctly or something. Is there a workaround for this?

• how to uninstall sphinx server

  I installed (from sources) yesterday sphinx server and didn't think of configuring it properly, so I left the default installation directory (/usr/local). Today I realized that it created all of it's directories inside that directory, instead of creating its own (as I wrongly thought). So today I started again the installation and specified explicitly the location where to install. After that I removed the previous directories from /usr/local that were created when the first installation was done (bin, etc, var). So I thought of giving it a test. I created the .conf file and wanted to run the indexer. But now, the indexer always tries to search the .conf file in the old location (obviously does not find anything) and when I specify where to find the .conf file it gives me errors for each of the configuration settings present. I know I did something wrong when I deleted manually those files and that's why I'm asking you if have any ideas how to correctly uninstall sphinx. Thank you.

Everything code wise is staying exactly the same but I just want it to go to the new domain. • Ubuntu 12.10 - VirtualBox not sharing internet with guest system

  I went from ArchLinux to Ubuntu on my dev box. I use VirtualBox to test web sites on Windows and IE. I have my Windows 7 VirtualBox image running on Ubuntu's VirtualBox. Back with ArchLinux, internet worked "out of the box" on the Windows boxes. I left the default options on the box's Network Options (NAT). The Windows machine shows as "connected to ethernet" but reports: The dns server isn't responding So I can't access Internet from there. I tried searching for Ubuntu's official docs but they seem pretty outdated. I tried using my old boxes from Arch (which boot normally but have no internet) and creating a new box from Ubuntu itself, but still get the same results. Update: I'm using VirtualBox 4.1.18 from Ubuntu's repository (apt-get install virtualbox).

• How do we install Unity-2D and dependencies offline?

  We have installed 11.04 32-bit on an old machine that has no internet connection and with a graphics card that is not suitable for running Compiz or Unity. Still, we would like to run Unity-2D on this machine. We are aware of answers to this Question. Sadly Keryx will not run on 11.04 32-bit because of unmet dependencies. Building an offline repository is not an option because of limited storage capacity. Is there any convenient other way to find, download, install, and eventually update unity-2 and all dependencies (preferably from an OS independent download path)?

• Better control on code updates

  I will briefly explain my situation. I have a website in PHP, this website is powered by a custom framework + some "plug-in" made ad hoc for it. I am the only developer of this. Until now I just test locally any changes than I upload the php files via FTP. I don't feel confortable anymore with this. The code base has grown quite a lot and I need some sort of system that helps to keep track of changes (line by line) and can restore to an old version easly if something goes wrong. Are there any good solution for this? I am not sure if the new position's title conveys a sideways move or an advancement. So, all other things being roughly equal (salary, domain of expertise, etc.), what is the external difference between these software engineer titles (in general and regardless of any particular company, if possible): senior engineer senior research engineer senior staff engineer member of technical staff principal engineer Edit: Let me elaborate on "member of technical staff" since it's kind of uncommon. • How can I create a dynamic site that is still search-bot friendly?

  If I want to have a slide effect between pages. You click a link, it is loaded off to the side and then slides in (pushing the old page off the other side). I can imagine using jQuery to do the PHP and the effects... but how do I do something like this that gracefully degrades for users without Javascript, including bots? Possibly more problematic: what if I wanted to have a sort of mural background across the site, perhaps with a parallax scrolling effect, and sliding to other pages reveals more of the, possibly giant image? Again, I can imagine how to do this with lots of fancy jQuery and PHP but it would heavily rely on those. How can I gracefully degrade in a situation like that? Any pointers, articles or books would be greatly appreciated. I keep trying to search for answers but I just get a lot of "theory"-based, unhelpful blogs.

• Can I hook my xbox up to my Ubuntu PC

  My old xbox 360 won't eject disks, it makes a sound,but won't open. I want to play games, so I think I could hook it up to my PC running Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit and maybe I could use my PC's DVD drive. Can this work at all, or am I just crazy? There is an HDMI port on the back of my graphics card. If I can't do that, is there any software for Ubuntu that can rip the game off of a CD and put it on a flash drive? I have heard xbmcbuntu works great for gaming, but it doesn't work with my PC.

• How to ramp up my data structures skills after a long hibernation

  I was pretty good with algorithms and data structures once, a long long time ago. Since then, I programmed professionally, and then went to manage a small team, which totally shot my tech skills in this field back. I've decided I want to be a developer again, and work for Google. The thing is, I'm so out of practice, that if I were to be interviewed right now I would surely flunk out in 10 minutes. What training program would you recommend for me to get back into shape? I already started this weekend by going back to the absolute basics and implementing a few sort algorithms, linked list, and hash table. Next, I think I'll read through the entire course material on the other basic data structures and graph algorithms. I want to find a focused set of practical exercises I can do in a relatively short amount of time, to juggle the old brain cells. I know this stuff - I just need to remind myself that I know it.

  I have recently starting upgrading my ios game to the latest Cocos2D (2.0 rc), and I am having some difficulties upgrading my texture generation code to OpenGL 2.0. • Distribution upgrade made Ubuntu unusable

  I installed today a distribution update from 11.10 to 12.04. This however basically ruined the whole OS. After update I lost all the window borders, icons and even access to the internet. I'm also unable to use the default window manager and I had to use the old gnome. The computer is Acer Aspire 5738G laptop, Intel Pentium T4500, Ati Mobility Radeon HD 560v, 4Gb DDR 3. I am using the open source drivers, not proprietary. Does anyone have any idea what could've happened, and how could I fix this. Help is highly appreciated

• How can I remove a Unity window entry?

  I installed Eclipse long time ago from the Software Center, but recently I needed a newer version than the repo one. Then I removed it via Software Center and installed Eclipse Kepler in /opt. However, the window opened is not called Eclipse, it is the name of an old program I made (Eclipse- GMM). However, that's not the main issue, but that even if I created a .desktop file it launches the same, having "two" eclipses in the dock, the actual program and the launcher. How can I remove Unity .desktop cache or wathever it is this?

• Black screen after login, after Kubuntu upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10

  After upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 I have troubles with Xorg - all boot process goes fine, but I have a black screen when Xorg starts (KDE starts, and I can hear AC adapter (dis)connect sounds). Trouble is in Xorg only, framebuffer console (ctrl-alt-f2) works fine, backlight turns on when I switch to console and turns off again after I switch back to X. All worked fine before release upgrade. I'm running AMD64 version of Kubuntu 13.10 on Samsung RV508 (Intel i915 graphic, no EFI) notebook. Xorg 1.14.3, kernel 3.11.0-12 UPDATE: I have tried to boot using old kernel (3.8.0-13) and now it's working fine with that kernel.
