• Spinup time failure

  I am not sure this is a real question or a bug I should report Ubuntu. Using: Ubuntu 11.10, on a Intel Q6600, Samsung Spinpoint F4 2TB. I have set my PC on Suspend and after I came back, pressed Enter and after logging in everything was back to normal. However, I had a message from Disk Utility that one disk reports errors. I entered Disk Utility, and my Samsung 2TB disk, the one on which my Ubuntu is installed, had the SMART Status turned red, with error message on it. The error was: Spinup time failed Value 21, Threshold value was 25 (so the error was reported because 21 < 25) I restarted and booted up in Windows to see what HD Tune is reporting. Unfortunately it was exactly the same 21/25. After reading up on Wiki about SMART and the errors, I discovered that Spinup time is the time required for the disk to reach full spinning speed in milliseconds. Then it hit me that, in Ubuntu I had Suspended the system, making essentially all my hardware stop. And when I rebooted to Windows, the hardware doesn't really stop, so SMART's reading of the Spinup time was still from Ubuntu's suspension. So I did a full PC stop and then booted up again, both in Ubuntu and Windows to see if there are different readings. Both reported successful Spinup time, 68 (a little better then 21 :) ), although in Disk Utility I have a nice message: Failed in the Past So now I am pretty sure that Ubuntu didn't handle the Suspend correctly, but then again should I worry about Imminent hardware failure ? Am I missing some drivers? Should I report this as a bug to Ubuntu? Sorry if this was a bad place to ask this question.

• Learning to be a good developer: what parts can you skip over?

  I have set myself the goal of becoming a decent developer by this time next year. By this I mean full experience of the development 'lifecycle,' a few good apps/sites/webapps under my belt, and most importantly being able to work at a steady pace without getting sidelined for hours by some should-know-this-already technique. I'm not starting from scratch. I've written a lot of html/css, SQL, javascript, python and VB.net, and studied other languages like C and Java. I know about things like OOP, design patterns, TDD, complexity, computational linguistics, pointers/references, functional programming, and other academic/theoretical matters. It's just I can't say I've really done these things yet. So I want to get up to speed, and I want to know what things I can leave till a later date. For instance, studying algorithms and the maths behind them is interesting and all, but so far I've hardly needed to write anything but the most basic nested loops. Investigating Assembly to have a clearer picture of low-level operations would be cool... but I imagine rarely infringes on daily work. On the other hand, looking at a functional programming language might help me write programs that are more comprehensible and less prone to hidden failures (at the moment I'm finding the biggest difficulty is when the complexity of the app exceeds my capacity to understand it - for instance passing data around was fine... until I had to start doing it with AJAX, which was a painful step up). I could spend time working through case studies of design patterns, but I'm not sure how many of them get used in 'real life.' I'm a programmer with basic abilities - what skills should I focus on developing? (also my Unix skills are very weak, and also knowledge of Windows configuration... not sure how much time I should spend on that)

• How add cpu frequency that should be available?

  I have a system with an Intel Core i7 970 that should be able to run at 3.2 GHz. I'm running ubuntu 12.04 and installed the cpufreq indicator to be able to change the governor and noticed that I only had frequencies up to 2.0 GHz available to me. • The biggest ADF conference "down under"

  While Oracle Open World is the place to be for ADF presentations, for Aussies living in Perth, San Francisco is a tad far away (believe me from experience, the 23hrs flight from PER-SYD-SFO is tedious).  That's why I'm very excited to see that the Australian Oracle User Group at this year's Perth conference is running its largest set of ADF presentation to date: 5! Okay, it doesn't compare to the 60 ADF sessions at OOW, but it's a small conference of around 300 people that runs for 2 days with 54 sessions total, not 40000 people that runs for 5 days with 1900+ sessions, so I think that's a good effort for a conference that's at the end of the earth! • Policy Administration is the Top 2011 IT Priority for Insurers

  The current issue of Insurance Networking News includes an interesting column by Novarica's Matt Josefowicz.  Recent research by the firm revealed that policy administration replacement or extension is the most common strategic IT project for insurers this year.  The article goes on to note that insurers are keenly focused on the business capabilities that can be delivered once the system is in production as well as the ability to leverage agile development methodologies and true business/IT collaboration during implementation. • Network really slow with TL-WN951N wireless card

  I literally just installed ubuntu and it seems to be working great except the network is deadly slow. I'm running a TL-WN951N wireless card which can download at about 600-700 KB/s in windows but in Ubuntu the max speed it seems to get is around 5KB/s. I guess I should note that my WAP is only wireless-G but like I said, I can get much better speeds in Windows. I'm testing the speeds by downloading files from here: http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/test/ Anyone have any idea? I saw some people recommend downloading drivers and compiling them myself but I'm really really new to all of this so would appreciate someone babying me through it so I don't brick my computer! • Slick2D + LWJGL collision system

  So I've been learning java for a while and have explored slick and lwjgl before but went away from using Slick for a while. But I've recently gone back to using it (as I'm making a platformer and Tiled will be really helpful). But here's where my problems begin: collision. I have a player polygon and I check to see if it's colliding with my tiled map with this method: public static boolean playerCollisionWith() { for(int i = 0; i < Blockmap.entities.size(); i++) { Block entity1 = (Block) Blockmap.entities.get(i); if(playerPoly.intersects(entity1.poly)) { return true; } } return false; } This would work normally but I'm using a different method for movement. Instead of just adding a speed variable to the player's x axis. I move like this: if(Keyboard.isKeyDown(Keyboard.KEY_RIGHT)) { speedX = Math.min(5, speedX + 1); moving = true; playerPoly.setX(x); if(playerCollisionWith()) { speedX = -5; playerPoly.setX(x); } } That Math.min call is what is messing me up =. I can't just call speedX = -5, because when I do the player "bounces" when the right mouse button is down and it's colliding. Bounces as in flashes back and forth REALLY quickly. But I don't really know how I would make it so that collisions on the y axis would work either, whether the player is jumping or not. So if I could get some help with how to fix this problem that would be great. Thank you for the help!

• Adding a CMS to an existing Magento shop

  I am working on a project for 3 niche stores built on magento (using magento's multi-store function) that each get roughly 50k unique visitors a day. The sites don't currently have a blog or forum or any social networking aspects. Would like to add a cms to each site that can be centrally run and would like it to take over the front end content from Magento. Also would like it to maintain an online blog/publication of sorts with videos, articles, and the like with privileges to edit the content given to a dozen or so people with different privileges. Want to add a forum to each site that is fairly robust and to possibly add some social networking aspects down the road, so extandability and available plugins/mods in each cms is important. Other than shared login between the forums,blog/publication and store, would like to be able to integrate some content from the forums and blog/publication into the store as well. After researching this a bit, I am inclined towards Drupal, but I haven't found any modules to integrate it with Magento. Also, since the blog content will be done by about a dozen nontechnical people, I want something that is very easy to work with. Lastly, since the site gets a good amount of traffic, speed and security are very important. What CMS would you recommend integrating in this context? Deciding between Drupal, Wordpress and ModX. Also Plone as well. Thanks.

• Why does my terrain turn white when I get close to it?

  When I zoom in on my terrain it goes white: The further in I zoom, the greater the whiteness becomes. Is this normal? Is this to speed up rendering or something? Can I turn it off? I'm also getting these error messages in the console over and over again: rc.right != m_GfxWindow-GetWidth() || rc.bottom != m_GfxWindow-GetHeight() and GUI Window tries to begin rendering while something else has not finished rendering! Either you have a recursive OnGUI rendering, or previous OnGUI did not clean up properly. Does this bear any correlation on the issue? Update I create virtual desktops to flit between using the program Deskpot. Turning this program off and restarting has stopped the above errors appearing in the console. However, I still get white terrain when I zoom in. Not a single error message. I've restarted my computer to no avail. I have an Asus NVidia GeForce GTX 760 2GB DDR5 Direct CU II OC Edition Graphics Card. Any known issues? Update I don't think it's fog...

• Bot strategy in an arena

  I am writing the player's behavior for an arena game, and I'm wondering if you could offer some strategies. I'm writing it in Python, but I'm just interested in the high level game play. Here are the game aspects: Arena is a circle of a given size. The arena's size shrinks every round to help break any ties. Players are much smaller circles, and can be on teams of 1 or 2 players. Players attack by colliding with other players, and based on the physics of the collision (speed of both players, angle), one could force another player out of the arena. Once a player is out of the arena, they are out of the game (for that round). The goal is to be on the only team with players left in the arena. All other players have been pushed (through collisions or mistakes) out of the arena. It is possible for there to be no winner if the last two players exit the arena at the same time. Once the player has been programmed, the game just runs. There is no human intervention in the game. I'm thinking it's easiest to implement a few simple programmatic rules for my player to follow. For example, stay close to center of the arena, attack opponents from the inner side of the arena, etc. Are there any good simple game strategies? Would adding a random aspect to the game help? For example, to avoid predictability by the other team or something. Thanks in advance.

  I read and understand the basic of flocking algorithm. Basically, we need to have 3 behaviors: 1. Cohesion 2. Separation 3. Alignment From my understanding, it's like a state machine. Every time we do an update (then draw), we check all the constraints on both three behaviors. And each behavior returns a Vector3 which is the "correct" orientation that an object should transform to. • Need help deciding if Joomla! experience as a good metric for hiring a particular prospective employee.

  My company has been looking to hire a PHP developer. Some of the requirements for the job include: an understanding of design patterns, particularly MVC. some knowledge of PHP 5.3's new features. experience working with a PHP framework (it doesn't matter which one). I interviewed a man today who's primary work experience involved working with Joomla!. As an employee, he will be required to work on existing and new web applications that use Zend Framework, CakePHP and/or CodeIgniter. It is my opinion that we shouldn't dismiss hiring a developer just because he has not used the same technologies that he'll be using on the job. So, I'd like to know about the kind of coding experience working with Joomla! can provide. I've never bothered to take more than a brief look (if that) at the Joomla! package, so I'm hoping to lean on the knowledge of my peers. Would you consider Joomla! to contain a professional code-base? Is the package well organized, and/or OO in general, or is it more like WordPress where logic and presentation are commingled? When working with Joomla!, is the developer encouraged to use best practices? In your opinion, would experience working with Joomla! garner the skills needed to get up to speed with Zend or CakePHP quickly, or will there be a steep learning curve ahead of the developer? I'm not saying that Joomla! is a bad technology, or even that it is lower on the totem pole when compared to the frameworks I've mentioned. Maybe it's awesome, I dunno. I simply have no idea!
