  • Can't append space at end of UITextView

    I have a UITextView in which I want the initial value to be "@username " (notice the space after the username). This way the user can start typing right away without having to tap space. So I do: textView.text = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"@%@ ", username]; But it seems like it's impossible to have the UITextView text property ending with a space (it always gets stripped out). Am I correct? Is there any workaround for this? I tried using the \s char and no success.

  • Is it possible to reliably auto-decode user files to Unicode? [C#]

    I have a web application that allows users to upload their content for processing. The processing engine expects UTF8 (and I'm composing XML from multiple users' files), so I need to ensure that I can properly decode the uploaded files. Since I'd be surprised if any of my users knew their files even were encoded, I have very little hope they'd be able to correctly specify the encoding (decoder) to use. And so, my application is left with task of detecting before decoding. This seems like such a universal problem, I'm surprised not to find either a framework capability or general recipe for the solution. Can it be I'm not searching with meaningful search terms? I've implemented BOM-aware detection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte_order_mark) but I'm not sure how often files will be uploaded w/o a BOM to indicate encoding, and this isn't useful for most non-UTF files. My questions boil down to: Is BOM-aware detection sufficient for the vast majority of files? In the case where BOM-detection fails, is it possible to try different decoders and determine if they are "valid"? (My attempts indicate the answer is "no.") Under what circumstances will a "valid" file fail with the C# encoder/decoder framework? Is there a repository anywhere that has a multitude of files with various encodings to use for testing? While I'm specifically asking about C#/.NET, I'd like to know the answer for Java, Python and other languages for the next time I have to do this. So far I've found: A "valid" UTF-16 file with Ctrl-S characters has caused encoding to UTF-8 to throw an exception (Illegal character?) (That was an XML encoding exception.) Decoding a valid UTF-16 file with UTF-8 succeeds but gives text with null characters. Huh? Currently, I only expect UTF-8, UTF-16 and probably ISO-8859-1 files, but I want the solution to be extensible if possible. My existing set of input files isn't nearly broad enough to uncover all the problems that will occur with live files. Although the files I'm trying to decode are "text" I think they are often created w/methods that leave garbage characters in the files. Hence "valid" files may not be "pure". Oh joy. Thanks.

  • How can I append text to a start and end of a file as header and footer ?

    I'm filling an XML document manually using C# and I need to have <data> as header and </data> as footer for the whole XML file. Is there an easy way to do that ? I know It can be done but I couldn't find a way to do it. Keep in mind that I'm updating the entries so I need to make sure that they always come between the header and the footer. I create a table below with an xml column and declare a variable, initialize it and Insert the Value into the xml column, create table CustomerInfo (XmlConfigInfo xml) declare @StrTemp nvarchar(2000) set @StrTemp = '<Test></Test>' insert into [CustomerInfo](XmlConfigInfo) values (@StrTemp) Then comes the part of the question,, if I write this... update [CustomerInfo] set XmlConfigInfo.modify('insert <Info></Info> into (//Test)[1]') -- Works Fine!!! but when I try this, set @StrTemp = 'insert <Info></Info> into (//Test)[1]' update [CustomerInfo] set XmlConfigInfo.modify(@StrTemp) -- Doesn't Work!!! and throws an error The argument 1 of the xml data type method "modify" must be a string literal. is there a way around for this one? I tried this, but it is not working :(

Is there an equivalent of @ as applied to strings in Java: For example I can do @"c:\afolder\afile" in C# and have it ignore the escape characters when processing instead of having to do "c:\afolder\aFile".     When allocating a new BSTR with SysAllocString via a wchar_t* on the heap, should I then free the original wchar_t* on the heap? So is this the right way? wchar_t *hs = new wchar_t[20]; // load some wchar's into hs... BSTR bs = SysAllocString(hs); delete[] hs; Am I supposed to call delete here to free up the memory? Or was that memory just adoped by the BSTR?

  • Convert any currency string to double

    I need to store multiple currencies in SQL server. I understand that SQL won't support all different types of currencies (unless I store it as a string, but I don't want to do that). My idea was to convert all the values from their currency format to a standard double and store that instead. Then just re-format based on the culture info when displaying. However, I have tried doing something like e.g. var cultureInfo = new System.Globalization.CultureInfo("en-US"); double plain = return Double.Parse("$20,000.00", cultureInfo); This doesn't ever seem to work it always throws a FormatException. Even removing the currency symbol and just trying to do this based on the number alone does the same thing. This is just an example I want to support pretty much any type of currency. Is there a standard way of stripping out currency and getting the value as a double?

  • Any clever way to fix 'string or binary data would be truncated' warning with LINQ

    Is there a clever way to determine which field is causing 'string or binary data would be truncated' with LINQ. I've always ended up doing it manually by stepping through a debugger, but with a batch using 'SubmitChanges' I have to change my code to inserting a single row to find the culprit in a batch of rows. Am I missing something or in this day and age do I really have to still use a brute force method to find the problem. Please dont give me advice on avoiding this error in future (unless its something much cleverer than 'validate your data'). The source data is coming from a different system where I dont have full control anyway - plus I want to be lazy. PS. Does SQL Server 2008 actually tell me the field name. Please tell me it does! I'll upgrade!
