• MacBook Pro (2007 - ATI-Card) Screen goes half black then shuts down the entire computer

  Hey, when I'm starting my MBP I get about 10-60 seconds of the booting process before the screen goes half black (Its like applying a black to transparent gradient from the left side of the screen to the middle of the screen). After a 5 seconds the entire screen blacks out and the MBP shuts down. There have been issues with heat and some minor artifacts on the screen in the past but nothing serious as far as I know. Everything could be resolved by rebooting or letting the MBP cool down a bit. I would like to identify the problem now. There are 3 possibilities I can think of right now: My graphics card is defect and shuts down after a few seconds. (But if thats true, I find it kind of hard to explain the HALF black screen) My LCD-Panel is defect and sends back wrong signals so the system shuts down??? (I not sure about that) My fan or/and thermal sensors are defect and forcing the graphics card to shut down. Can anyone point if I'm right or if there yet another reason for this. • Error on LDAP Login - xsessions error - Session lasted less than 10 seconds

  I have two machines both running CentOS 5.6 64bit. On the LDAP Machine it has a DHCP, BIND and OpenLDAP Server. LDAP is correctly configured and users can authenticate against it. Using root I configure machine 2 to use LDAP for authentication and when trying to log in it successfully authenticates against a saved user on the LDAP Server but produces the following errors and then throws me back to the login screen. I can still sign in as root and use the machine as normal. The syslog doesn't show any errors and I disabled SELinux to see if it was interfering. The error; Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not lgoged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem. There is then a tickbox to view the contents of ~/.xsessions-errors which contains; /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with utmp /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/bin/sessreg -a -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/gdm:0:Xservers" -h "" -l ":0" "admin" localuser:admin being added to access control list No profile for user 'admin' found /bin/sh: /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /etc/X11/Xinit/Xclients: No such file or directory /bin/sh: line 0: exec: /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients: cannot execute: No such file or directory Apologies if someone notices something isn't spelt quite right or doesn't sound right, the system never actually creates or saves this file so I have had to type it across from the screen. Through the authentication panel in CentOS on the client I have set it to create the users home directory on login. The user is being correctly authenticated and the /home/admin folder has been created but this error would suggest it has not? The client is a new install on an 80gb hard drive so there is well over 80% of the drive still available. Thanks for any suggestions or pointers.

• Looking for an application that scrolls or pans netbook screens running Windows

  I'm looking for a Windows 7 and XP compatible Windows desktop panning/scrolling tool. This is to solve a problem where some applications for example MSN have settings/preference Windows that are not resizeable. I have a Netbook with a small maximum screen resolution e.g. 1024x600. The fixed non-resizeable windows are too large for this display screen size so I cannot see all of the items on these windows, particularly the OK button to save settings. What I would like is a desktop scrolling/panning tool where if I move my mouse pointer to any edge of the display, it pans to show the region of the too-large-fixed window that I could not see. I use a Samsung N110 and Toshiba NB100 netbooks. I'm looking for: A general program that provides desktop panning/scrolling/expanded resolution to allow all regions of a non-resizeable fixed window Preferably a non-graphics hardware specific program but will accept a solution that works with both the above machines I'm NOT looking for (i.e. unsatisfactory answers others have asked that I've already searched and found): Advice on what programs to use that DON'T have the problem of fixed windows Alternative operating system solutions Plugging in an external monitor with larger resolution - I use this option but I need a solution when one is not available, e.g. while travelling etc Advice about not using small screen netbooks - I enjoy the compact convenience of them Advice about change the dpi settings in the Control Panel Display settings Advice about guesswork with the tab key to move the focus the off-screen item I cannot see Thank you in advance.

• Recommend a UK based VPS host equivalent to Dreamhost [closed]

  I appreciate this question could be considered subjective and argumentative so can people make recommendations rather than arguing about the best. I believe the "correct" answer is the one closest to what I am looking for. Basically I live in the UK but have been using the US based Dreamhost for about 6 years now, and my web projects are getting to the scale where the websites need to the UK based to cope with the demand and load. I originally had shared hosting with Dreamhost but upgraded to a VPS a while ago, getting 512mb of RAM, unlimited disk space, bandwidth and domains for $30. Their control panel is a custom easy to use build that they have created in house and offers features very similar to other web panels (as far as I am aware). So basically my question boils down to, is there anywhere that offers an equivalent package? In all honesty as long as I have over 50gb HDD space and unlimited domains it doesn't really matter? Are there any VPS providers you would recommend as reliable? I promise to check every link posted, many thanks for your time!

• Soundtest works, but no other sounds and windows starts very slowly

  So suddenly all sounds on my computer stopped working expect the sound test works, but when I go to control panel and audio it says there's no audio device. And audio players and audio on website doesn't work either. and Also windows starts very slowly. I'm not sure if this helps but I'll tell what happened before this. I downloaded this program from a little shady website, I hesitated and for a good reason I guess cos the moment I finished downloading it, my antivir detected it as unwanted program and put it on quarantine. I thought everything was fine, but had some problems with program (won't go to details about it cos it's not really related to audio) so rebooted the computer and I was suprised that windows started really really slowly. It took like 5 mins to load the desktop such. After that I noticed the sounds were missing, I immediately deleted the program since I thought it was causing the problem. But it didn't change much. I tried to find the solution with no success and now I'm just scanning again my computer. I'd be thankful if anyone would be able to help me. I might have left a thing or ten things out, so feel free to ask. oh and I'm using windows xp

• Using keyboard disables touchpad left button for a second on Acer laptop in Windows 8.1

  The problem is present in the whole system not only in games: desktop, chrome, games, everywhere. When I press any "input key" on a keyboard for example in desktop I can't select the file by left mouse button OR by tapping the touchpad for about one second(right button works immediately). Later on the LMB works well. There is NO delay, button is just deactivated for a second. In games that means that when I run I cannot shoot for example. When I switched LMB and RMB functions in windows control panel still the LMB is getting disabled and RMB works fine. By "input key" I mean letter or a number, keys like Alt, CapsLock, Ctrl does not affect touchpad. I do not remember that problem when I used Windows 7. USB mouse works like it should. The problem existed when I was using Elantech touchpad driver and after I uninstalled it and used Windows 8.1 generic driver. EDIT I installed the Elantech drivers and set values to 0 at every disable... key. But the problem is still present. EDIT 2 THE LAPTOP IS Acer V3-571G I have turned off disabling function in touchpad but it did not fix it. I know that touchpad is NOT broken down. Turned on the animated touchpad icon of elantech drivers and put it on the task bar(on a picture) When I type the letter and press the LMB the dynamic icon displays the click but it is ignored.

• Desktop appliciations are unable to launch my browser in Windows 8

  I have a fresh copy of Windows 8 Pro installed from MSDN. I have Google Chrome installed (stable channel) and it is set as my default browser. I even went into Control Panel Default Programs to ensure that Chrome had all its defaults. When other desktop applications try to launch my browser they always fail. For example, while trying to install the Android SDK for Windows the installer accurately detected that I did not have the JDK installed. It provides a friendly button to visit java.oracle.com. When pressing this button, nothing happens at all. You can see that here: http://youtu.be/XXL8GhuWWg0 If it were only that application that was having issues I wouldn't think anything of it but I have been encountering similar issues all over the place. Probably the most irritating one is when visual studio has updates; clicking the update button does nothing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwd1mn3TId0 You can see in that screencast that Visual Studio is not able to launch the browser no matter what I click. The update button doesn't do anything and neither do the two links in the update's description. Any suggestions? I'm assuming it's a Windows issue since it is happening in multiple applications. UPDATE: Setting IE as the default browser fixes the issue. So it has something to do with it not being able to launch Chrome programmatically. Is it even possible to workaround this bug or do I have to suffer with IE as default for now?

• Plesk FTP not working but SFTP and Shell is working

  I am facing a strange problem. The FTP on my Plesk VPS is not working. Whenever I try to connect, FileZilla FTP client says: Status: Resolving address of xxxxxxxxxxxxx.com Status: Connecting to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:21... Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message... Error: Could not connect to server So, it's not even going to the step of asking username/password. So, it's something else. The SFTP on port 22 is working fine. Also, I can successfully do shell access and run commands. But, I NEED FTP access too on port 21. I have searched everywhere but can not find any setting to enable it. This is the Plesk version info: Parallels Plesk Panel version 9.5.2 Operating system Linux 2.6.26.8-57.fc8 CPU GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz Any help is appreciated. [EDIT]: The firewall is not blocking it. I have checked it on server and there are absolutely no blocking rule. Firewall states: All incoming/outgoing connections are accepted on FTP And on client-side (my PC), I can connect to other FTP servers so this is not an issue in my PC's firewall. Moreover, I can not even connect to the FTP from online FTP clients like net2ftp.

• Windows 7 - Can't get my TV working as primary display with nVidia 7900GS

  I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 RTM (from MSDN) on my HTPC, which is connected to a 42" Magnavox LCD TV via component cables to my nVidia 7900GS. Everything was fine through the installation until I went to install the official driver from nVidia. Towards the end of the installation, the TV blinked off and wouldn't come back on. I went and got an LCD monitor and plugged it into a DVI port and the monitor came right up, but was automatically selected as the primary display. Now, if I set the TV to be the primary display, the TV just blanks until I hit escape to cancel the "settings have changed, do you want to keep them" dialog. Any suggestions? Update: I'm able to set the TV as the primary display using the Windows 7 "screen resolution" configuration panel. However, if I try to remove the LCD monitor either by unplugging it or using the configuration, the TV blanks out again. Update 2: This setup was working correctly in Vista Home Premium 32-bit. Update 3: I've uninstalled the nVidia driver and am using the driver that Windows Update installed. As much as this offends my geek sensibilities (must use the "right" driver!!), well, It Works™.

  Is there a way to make SSH port not get sent through VPN so when my computer is connected to a VPN, it can still be remoted in via SSH from its non-VPN IP? I am using Mint Linux 13.   So to say, if i have a VPS which i own now, and i wanted to make the most secure and stable system that i can make. How would i do that? Just to try: I installed debian 7 with LVM Encryption via installation: You get the 2 partitions a /boot and a encrypted partition. When booting you will be prompted to fill in the password to unlock the encryption of the encrypted partition, Which then will have more partitions like /home /usr and swapspace which will automatically mount. Now, i do need to fill in the password over a VNC-SSL connection via the control panel website of the VPS hoster, so they can see my disk encryption password if they wanted to, they have the option if they wanted to look at what i have as data right? Data encryption on VPS , Is it possible to have a 100% secure virtual private server? So lets say i have my server and it is sitting well locked next to me, with the following examples covered bios (you have to replace bios) raid (you have to unlock raid-config) disk (you have to unlock disk encryption) filelike-zip-tar (files are stored in encrypted archives) which are in some other crypted file mounted as partition (archives mounted as partitions) all on the same system So it will be slow but it would be extremely difficult to crack the encryption. So to say if you stole the server. Then i only need to make the connection like ssh safer with single use passwords, block all incoming and outgoing connections but give one "exception" for myself. And maybe one for if i somehow lose my identity for the "exeption" What other overkill but realistic security options are available, i have heard about SElinux?

• Is it bad to redirect http to https?

  I just installed an SSL Certificate on my server. I use a web hosting panel called ZPanel that is an open source project. It then set up a redirect for all traffic on my domain on Port 80 to redirect it to Port 443. In other words, all my http://example.com traffic is now redirected to the appropriate https://example.com version of the page. The redirect is done in my Apache Virtual Hosts file with something like this... RewriteEngine on ReWriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^443$ RewriteRule ^/(.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [NC,R,L] My question is, are there any drawbacks to using SSL? Since this is not a 301 Redirect, will I lose link juice/ranking in search engines by switching to https? I appreciate the help. I have always wanted to set up SSL on a server, just for the practice of doing it, and I finally decided to do it tonight. It seems to be working well so far, but I am not sure if it's a good idea to use this on every page. My site is not eCommerce and doesn't handle sensitive data; it's mainly for looks and the thrill of installing it for learning. UPDATED ISSUE Strangely Bing creates this screenshot from my site now that it is using HTTPS everywhere...

• Gaming blew fuse: how to overcome?

  I've been gaming for a while now. When playing certain games this PC goes into overdrive. The fan/fans start/s to sound like a jet engine it/they get/s so busy. Also I have smelt burning when this has happened. The fuse blew on the 4 socket adapter I was using recently. On the following thread someone said this could be due to the PSU not being strong enough to handle the load, in what it seems could be a related issue someone had, although the person who posted this question did say that blowing a fan on their PC stopped it crashing in that case: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2047543/gtx-650-overheating-issue.html. This is exactly what they said: Your GPU isn't overheating. 70+ before it would shutdown and cause a restart. Make sure your PSU is strong enough to handle your new system at load and possibly run Memtest to check your RAM (although not BSOD'ing and just shutting down points to the PSU). This (the PSU part) makes more sense to me than it being to do with dust etc, since it seems a more plausible explanation of why the fuse blew. The PC has no problems except when playing certain games: i.e. TERA Rising and WoW with add-ons (I think WoW is ok as long as I don't have more than 1 add-on (Healers Have To Die)). I'm just wondering if anyone knows or can suggest what I might be able to do to be able to play these games without this problem occurring. The PC's spec is this: Display: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 8GB RAM (6 available) Processor: AMD FX (tm) - 8120 Eight-Core Processor - 3.1 GHz, 4 Cores, 8 Logical Processors I have read on another post that forcing vsync in the Nvidia Control Panel helped with what seems could be a similar problem, so I plan to see if that solves it, God permitting.

• Transferring domain from one registrar to another

  I have a domain from my old web host, which was free with my hosting account. After a few years, I am moving to a VPS. Most of my other domains were registered with Namecheap, so it was just a matter of changing a few DNS records. However, given that my old host does not provide me with a DNS control panel, and I don't want to be paying a full hosting bill for just domains, I'm now looking into transferring it. My old host says there will be a charge of $15 to them. NameCheap's page seems to imply you don't need the current registrar to do anything, but it also seems to be based on sending an email to the one listed in whois. Of course, my old host have whoisguard on the domain so the only email on it is [email protected] (and not a unique [email protected], just [email protected]) which doesn't go to me. Again, there doesn't seem to be an option to disable this. So, is it a case of paying my old host's fee, and paying again for the domain from NameCheap, or is there some other way to transfer my domain? (I'm not really sure which of the trilogy sites this is best for.)

  Hi, I was given by my company a laptop with Windows XP Professional in Spanish. I would like to translate it to English, since I really DISLIKE to use localized versions of programs. I have read about Windows MUI packs, however you MUST have Windows XP Pro in English in order to translate it to other language, you can't translate it TO English from other language. Since reinstalling the OS using a Win XP CD in english is not an option (don't have the license nor the CD, and don't have domain privileges to rejoin my computer to the domain), I was wondering what are the essential files that contain localized strings of text. I was doing some research, and apparently explorer.exe has many of the Windows Error Messages and other strings. Will replacing my original explorer.exe with one from Windows XP in English be enough (and work) for having a "basic" english version of windows? Im mainly interested in having error messages, start menu, and the control panel in english. Also, does it HAVE to be the same version as the Service Pack im running? Besides explorer.exe are there any other essential files that i should try to get and replace? Do you see any "dangers" in replacing this files with english version ones? • How to secure a group of Amazon EC2 instances

  I have several Amazon EC2 instances running Ubuntu 10.04 and I've recently started using Amazon's Route 53 as my DNS. The purpose of doing that was to allow the instances to refer to each other by name rather than private IP (which can change). I've pointed my domain name (via GoDaddy) to Amazon's name servers, allowing me to access my EC2 webservers. However, I noticed I can now access the EC2 instances which I don't want to be public, such as the dedicated MySQL Server. I was thinking Amazon's Security Groups would still be in effect when using Route 53, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Before I started using Route 53, I was thinking of having one instance run a reverse proxy, which would help protect the web servers behind it. Then IP-restrict all the other instances. I know IP restricting can be done using the firewall within each instance, but should I ever need to access them from another IP address, I'd need a way in. Amazon's control panel made it a breeze to open a port when necessary. Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping EC2 instances secure, but also accessible to their administrator? Also, what's the best topology for a group of EC2 instances, consisting of web servers and a dedicated database server, from a security perspective? Does having a reverse proxy server even make sense?

• Troubles with apache and virtual hosts

  I have a BIG problem. I have VPS with Debian OS, and LAMP installed. Fresh install. For control panel i using Webmin. Now i trying to setup multiple sub-domains on my server using webmin for example: downloads.my-domain.com cpanel.my-domains.com forum.my-domains.com But problem what is happening is next, while i using no virtual hosts, everything works perfectly when i accessing it using my-domain.com, but when i add Virtual host, i cann access it but my-domain.com becomes unavilable because it redirects to virtual hosts i added. When i add more than 2 virtual hosts, problem is still here. Also, when i try to access to virtual server for example downloads.my-domain.com, it redirects again to cpanel.my-domains.com When i delete virtual hosts, access to my-domain.com is succesfull... What i known: - That is not problem with my domain provider. I correctly added subdomains and added host record to my VPS IP. - I added unique name to every single virtual host. - There are no two same virtual hosts - Every virtaul hosts have own directory: for example: downloads.my-domain.com have own WWW dir: /var/downloads Can somebody help me? • Problem creating ODBC connection to SQL Server 2008 with Vista

  Well, I'm trying to get a database schema thing working, first I tried just doing it in Linux where I'm more comfortable, but ODBC seems to be a hack there and I couldn't get it to work. So I figured it shouldn't be too hard in Windows.. Ok, so I created a SQL Server Client Alias so that I can simply same windowsserver to refer to my SQL server. Then, I went to the ODBC configuration in Control Panel. I clicked Add in the User DSN section. I chose Native SQL Server (10), and then clicked next. Then I typed a short name and a description and gave the servername as windowsserver/SQLEXPRESS Then, I click next, give it my user name and password and click next. Then, after like 2 minutes it says "Login Timeout Expired" What can be wrong here? I know the server is configured cause I have SQL Server Management Studio opened up with that server in it. I'm also just trying to connect over regular TCP/IP and my firewall is disabled.

• Local user vs. domain user? What is the right way here?

  I'm a software developer in a company with 6 employees. Everyone has a machine for him-/herself, so none of the machines is shared. I'm currently setting up my machine with Windows 8 and was experimenting a bit with domain and local user accounts. Correct me please if I'm wrong, but I think the idea behind is, that domain users generally should not be able to modify the configuration of a machine (like installing software), since they are able to login on every single machine in the domain. The local user (usually just one local administrator per machine) is the one who cares about the configuration of the machine. But in my case the login into the domain is just for being able to access directories/servers in the domain (I do not really know the details, all I know is, that loggin into the domain user account is necessary). So overall I've got a local admin account and a domain account used on my machine. While working I'm logged in to my domain user account. But it annoys me, that I always need to enter the credentials of my local user account when I'm about to update/install something, which happens quite often as a software developer. I fixed this with adding the domain account into the user accounts in my control panel and putting it into the Administrators group. The only thing I wanted to know about this: is there something REALLY bad about doing this? Or is there maybe a more common way to be able to act like a local admin, while logged in as a domain user? PS: I'm sorry about the tags, but I don't know the proper ones. I'd be glad if some of the superuser experts could fix this :-)

• Explorer constantly hanging

  So I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) an AMD 8150 on an Asus Crosshair V motherboard with all the latest and greatest patches, and I am experiencing frequent Explorer freezes. I've included the information I've grepped from the Event Viewer below: The program Explorer.EXE version 6.1.7601.17567 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel. • apache segmentation error

  I can't start Apache with the following errors: [root@web]# /etc/init.d/httpd start Starting httpd: /bin/bash: line 1: 19232 Segmentation fault /usr/sbin/httpd [root@web]# /usr/sbin/apachectl -k start /usr/sbin/apachectl: line 102: 19919 Segmentation fault $HTTPD $OPTIONS $ARGV I use webmin control panel and I've already tried re-installing Apache from scratch. Can someone advise what else I should try to do? Many thanks. UPDATE: The only line is always written in the error logs which seems not to be very important: [Mon Nov 14 19:00:09 2011] [notice] suEXEC mechanism enabled (wrapper: /usr/sbin/suexec) UPDATE 2: I've recently had the error below in the logs. Looks like some modules are incompatible, so I've just disabled these extensions: fileinfo and mcrypt in my php.ini. I should be able to start the web server without them. • My nameserver isn't registered?

  My problem is that I am trying to set my domain's nameservers to the nameservers of my dedicated server. My domain is hosted by Namecheap, and everytime I try to input the two nameservers for my private server, one of them is rejected for being unregistered. My dedicated server's control panel is managed through Parallels Plesk 11.5, and the nameservers provided to me are one from the actual provider, OVH (sdns1.ovh.ca), and the other is an actual unique nameserver that points directly to my specific dedicated server. Previously, for another domain I own, I was successfully able to get Namecheap to take the nameserver without an error, so I know this is possible. I know that it works for one of my other domains. After being redirected by Namecheap to contact the server provider, I called OVH and they said it was something I would have to do myself. One interesting detail the OVH representative mentioned was that he saw that my port 53 was closed, which is the port that handles DNS. The only problem is that I have no idea or knowledge as how to open this port back up. So, my final question is how can I get this nameserver working in Namecheap to point to my dedicated server? • Unexpected media key behavior on new Acer Aspire

  I'm having weird issues with the media keys (play/pause, previous, next, etc.) on a new Acer Aspire laptop. This is the first Acer I've owned and also my first Windows 7 computer, so I'm not sure whether the behavior is a result of some hidden Acer process that I haven't rooted out yet, or some Windows 7 option that I'm not aware of, or something else. I'm experiencing two issues that I suspect are related. Both problems are intermittent but happen more often than not. The media player I'm using is Winamp. I'm pretty sure I've had the same problem when using other media players, but when I tried to verify that before posting this, I only had the problems with Winamp. Because the problems are intermittent, I'm not sure if that's significant. 1) When I press the Play/Pause media key, in addition to playing or pausing the media player, it brings up a little menu in the center of the screen that lists my removable drives (CD/DVD, USB drives, etc.). To make the menu go away I have to either click away from it or hit Escape. Selecting a drive on the menu doesn't seem to do anything. 2) When I press the Previous or Next media keys, it skips 2+ tracks instead of just one (the exact number seems to vary). I've poked around all the control panel options that I can find, and looked through all the utilities that came with the computer with no luck. There's nothing that I can find in the (very slim) documentation, either. I have a hunch that the problem is caused by whatever utility manages global hotkeys, but I haven't found any way to configure that. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. UPDATE: It looks like Winamp was the culprit. I did have the problem when using other media players, but when I uninstalled Winamp, the problem went away. I'd like to use Winamp, but I can survive with other players.

• Windows 7 mouse multi selection on windows explorer with CTRL and point to select / single click to open

  This is something that have annoyed me since i changed to Windows 7. I don't do double click for a long time now since windows introduced 1 click selection (Folder Options Click items as follows Single click to open an item). The problem is, when i click Control and hover over the items, they select/deselect automatically every small amount of mouse movement i make. What i want is to select/deselect the items only when i enter/exit them. So to deselect an item im hovering, i have to move the mouse out of it, and then back in. I'm using Intellimouse Explorer official drivers. (edit) Here's another related annoyance: When you are hovering something and move the mouse inside other item (Holding Ctrl) The new item may or may not be selected. If you continue moving the mouse it gets selected/deselected as you move. (more edit) I have found that the parameter HKCU\Control Panel\Mouse\MouseHoverHeight / MouseHoverWidth have some influence here. If it's set to 2, the item select/deselect really quickly as you move the mouse. When set to larger numbers, its slower. But setting to 20 or 200 don't seem to be much different.
