• How do I set or remove a Windows SMB password?

  I recently purchased a computer with the intention of using it as network-attached storage. It presently has no Windows password and only one account. Can I create two different shares (share two different folders) in different ways -- make one publicly accessible, and make another only visible to people with a certain username/password combination? Creating multiple users isn't a problem, I just can't figure out where to start within Windows.

• Got Hacked. Want to understand how.

  Someone has, for the second time, appended a chunk of javascript to a site I help run. This javascript hijacks Google adsense, inserting their own account number, and sticking ads all over. The code is always appended, always in one specific directory (one used by a third party ad program), affects a number of files in a number of directories inside this one ad dir (20 or so) and is inserted at roughly the same overnight time. The adsense account belongs to a Chinese website (located in a town not an hour from where I will be in China next month. Maybe I should go bust heads... kidding, sort of), btw... here is the info on the site: http://serversiders.com/fhr.com.cn So, how could they append text to these files? Is it related to the permissions set on the files (ranging from 755 to 644)? To the webserver user (it's on MediaTemple so it should be secure, yes?)? I mean, if you have a file that has permissions set to 777 I still can't just add code to it at will... how might they be doing this?   I want to reduce the overhead caused by HTTP headers to a minimum, so I'd like to avoid the "Expires" header, and use "Cache-Control" only - or maybe the other way around (I'm planning to send very short HTTP responses to browsers, so the answer to this question doesn't fully apply here: My headers account for a significant percentage). AFAIK, the "Cache-Control" header was standardized in HTTP 1.1, but are there still web caches/proxies, that don't understand it? Note: This is a sub-question to my stackoverflow (bounty) question

• Is it possible to open an Active Director or Exchange Management Console user dialog directly from Powershell?

  I'd like to be able to launch either the AD user dialog, or the EMC mailbox dialog directly from a Powershell script to open a specific user. The workflow goes something to the effect of "Does everything look correct on this user? Y/N" to continuing on, or to bringing up the account to edit. There's no reason to completely duplicate the functionality of these dialogs. I don't mind requiring that EMC or ADU&C already be open before the script is run, if necessary.

• Sharing an internet connection via crossover capable without changing IP settings

  I have a home wireless network and two laptops. My primary laptop is normal, and runs Windows 7. My secondary laptop has no wireless capability, and I have no access to the IP settings on my account. How can I access the internet on my secondary computer through my primary computer using a crossover cable or something similar? In other words, how can I make my primary computer produce a connection that my secondary computer will find indistinguishable from normal ethernet?

We haven't found anyone recommending rails playground, and web of trust seems to caution against it - http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/railsplayground.com I like the fact that they give you a sourcerepo account for free to host and track git repos, etc. The Questions: Is there any reason not to go with RailsPlayground? • What's the best way to backup a web server with 30GB of data?

  I currently have a server(Linux) running with around 10'000 users daily on it. The hoster offers a backup which I'm also using. Although I trust my hoster, I would like to have an offsite backup, just in case the hoster goes down for a longer time or goes bankrupt (you never know). My idea was to tar and split the data and copy the archive to my Amazon S3 account but I'm wondering if that's the best idea? Any tip is appreciated. Thanks, Andy

• Directly printing to remote CUPS/IPP server on Snow Leopard

  I need to use Kerberos authentication when printing from my OSX machine, however, the machine itself does not have a service account in active directory, so the KDC will not issue a delegation ticket for the local CUPS installation. I think printing could work if the printing framework would directly print to the network CUPS server (or even to the Windows print server), bypassing the local CUPS. Is it possible to setup printing so that it directly accesses the remote print server? (asking for a service ticket for that server would succeed)

Is this file enough to protect my mails or do I need additional files or whatever? I'm not a regular outlook user. I've read this but I don't think I'm using "Signatures, Templates, Stationery etc."...

  I edited my SSH configuration to accept connections on Port 213, as it was one of the few ports that my work firewall allows through. I then restarted sshd and everything was going well. I tested the ssh server locally, and checked the sshd service was listening on port 213; however, I still cannot get it to work outside of localhost. PuTTY gives a connection refused message, and some of the sites that allow check of ports I tried said the port was closed. To me, this is either firewall or port forwarding. • Trouble creating FTP in Server 2008

  I have been trying to create an FTP server on my new Server 2008. I have been following both (very detailed and highly published here guides) For setting up using IIS Manager http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/321/configure-ftp-with-iis-7-manager-authentication/ and For anonymous FTP http://www.trainsignaltraining.com/windows-server-2008-ftp-iis7 I am able to log as an anonymous user. My need is to use a named user, so I need to use the IIS Manager. I get error 530 when trying to log as a user. Connected to 127.0.0.1. 220 Microsoft FTP Service User (127.0.0.1:(none)): ftpmanager 331 Password required for ftpmanager. Password: 530-User cannot log in. Win32 error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. Error details: Filename: Error: 530 End Login failed. ftp> I can not learn from this message anything. My password is set to: 1234 (so I don't think I make a mistake here - testing purposes only ofc) Thank you. Note - I went over other posts on SE that I read, and couldn't get the result: IIS7 Windows Server 2008 FTP -> Response: 530 User cannot log in. FTP Error 530, User cannot log in, home directory inaccessible. Having trouble setting up FTP server on Windows Server 2008 EDIT I think I found some errors with the physical path. Going to Basic settings, and Test Connection on the physical path, gave me the following error: The server is configured to use pass-through authentication with a built-in account to access the specified physical path. However, IIS Manager cannot verify whether the built-in account has access. Make sure that the application pool identity has Read access to the physical path. If this server is joined to a domain, and the application pool identity is NetworkService or LocalSystem, verify that \$ has Read access to the physical path. Then test these settings again. I am not sure which/whom should get access to the Root folder !? I want to point out, I managed to login with a domain user (change authorization and authentication methods) but this is NOT the requested solution. I checked to make sure that the FTP, folders, access is working properly. I am bit lost here. ==== More tries: I have enabled another Allow rule for ALL Users. I still get the same error. It seems that it doesn't matter if i use a correct or wrong password, I still get Error 530.

I get AD installed correctly, but when I do the promotion to DC, the server restarts and when I try to access it, I am unable to login using any of the local system accounts. I even created my own separate user account, but that did not help. I made sure to disable the amazon settings for renaming the machine, the machine has a static ip and has been renamed.

If one right clicks on an RSS message, Outlook will download the attached conent from the RSS feed but this needs to be done a message at a time.
