  • How do I get certain code to execute before every single controller action in ASP.NET MVC 2?

    I want to check some things about the state of the session, the user agent, etc, and possibly take action and return a special view BEFORE a controller method gets a chance to execute. For example: Most common: User requests Home/Index System checks to make sure x != 0. x does not equal zero, so the Home/Index controller executes like normal. But, sometimes: User requests Home/Index System checks to make sure x != 0. x DOES equal zero. The user must be notified and the requested controller action cannot be allowed to execute. I think this involves the use of ActionFilters. But I have read about them and I don't understand if I can preempt the controller method and return a view before it executes. I am sure I could execute code before the controller method runs, but how do I keep it from running in some instances and return a custom view, or direct to a different controller method?

    I'm trying to use Html.ActionLink to generate a link with in this form: /Action/Model/Id/Parameter1/Parameter2 I've used: <%= Html.ActionLink("Link Text", "Action", "Model", new { id = var, parament1=var1 }, null) % but it always ends up looking like /Action/Model/Id?parameter1=variable I've seen similar questions on Stackoverflow and elsewhere, but I can't find a solution that works/makes sense. Any help would be appreciated.

    I have a PurchaseOrder model: public class PurchaseOrder { public string OrderNumber { get; set; } public string Customer { get; set; } public IList<LineItem> Lines { get; set; } } and a LineItem class: public class LineItem { public string PartNumber { get; set; } public int Quantity { get; set; } } What I want to do is on my view for the PurhcaseOrder Create action, I need a section for line items. The user should be able to add a new line, remove a line, then submit. One caveat is the PartNumber needs to be a dropdown list of valid parts. What can I do to accomplish what I'm looking for?

  • ASP.NET MVC / Linq-to-SQL classes: Can I get it to infer readable display names?

    If I have a table Orders with fields CustomerID, OrderID and OrderDate, then the "Linq-to-SQL classes" generated class will be called Orders, with members called CustomerID, OrderID and OrderDate. So far so good. However, if I then do Html.LabelFor(m => m.OrderDate) then the generated text will be "OrderDate" instead of "Order Date". I tried using Order_Date as the field name, but that didn't work. Is there any way to get it to infer a better display name? [I know that I can use data annotations to specify the display name explicitly, but I really don't want to do that for all my classes/members - I just want it to work by convention.]

The ascx view already inherits data from another Project. I cannot set my List object in the ascx page. Can this be done?     Hi, This is working, but how??? I have a controller action for a post: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post )] public ActionResult Edit(Person person) { bool isvalid = ModelState.IsValid; etc. The Person object has a property BirthDate, type DateTime. When i enter some invalid data in the form, say 'blabla' which is obvious not a valid Datetime, it fills all the (other) Person properties with the correct data and the BirthDate property with a new blank DateTime. The bool isvalid has the value 'false'. So far so good. Then i do this: return View(p); and in the view i have this: <%= Html.TextBox("BirthDate", String.Format("{0:g}", Model.BirthDate)) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessage("BirthDate", "*") %> Ant there it comes: i EXPECTED the model to contain the new, blank DateTime because i didn't put any new data in. Second, when the View displays something, it must be a DateTime, because Model.BirthDate can't hold anything but a DateTime. But to my surprise, it shows a textbox with the 'blabla' value! (and the red * behind it) Which ofcourse is nice because the user can seee what he typed wrong, but how can that (blabla)string be transferred to the View in a DateTime field?

  • Where should my "filtering" logic reside with Linq-2-SQL and ASP.NET-MVC in View or Controller?

    I have a main Table, with several "child" tables. TableA and TableAChild1 and TableAChild2. I have a view which shows the information in TableA, and then has two columns of all items in TableAChild1 and TableAChild2 respectivly, they are rendered with Partial views. Both child tables have a bit field for VisibleToAll, and depending on user role, I'd like to either display all related rows, or related rows where VisibleToAll = true. This code, feels like it should be in the controller, but I'm not sure how it would look, because as it stands, the controller (limmited version) looks like this: return View("TableADetailView", repos.GetTableA(id)); Would something like this be even work, and would it be bad what if my DataContext gets submitted, would that delete all the rows that have VisibleToAll == false? var tblA = repos.GetTableA(id); tblA.TableAChild1 = tblA.TableAChild1.Where(tmp => tmp.VisibleToAll == true); tblA.TableAChild2 = tblA.TableAChild2.Where(tmp => tmp.VisibleToAll == true); return View("TableADetailView", tblA); It would also be simple to add that logic to the RendarPartial call from the main view: <% Html.RenderPartial("TableAChild1", Model.TableAChild1.Where(tmp => tmp.VisibleToAll == true); %>

    Im using a couple of JSON calls to render data, etc etc. In order to keep the proper key value, I am storing it in a tag. I have this in several places in my code, none of which cause an issue like this one is. I have looked at the other code in the same view and it is the same and it works. I must be missing something, or have some sort of mistype that I havent caught. Just an overview of the controller events: The first call (/GroupSetup/PlanSetupAddNewList) will return an html string building a "form" for users to enter information into. The second call (/GroupSetup/PlanSetupChangePlanList) just changes a second dropdown based on the first dropdown selection (overwriting the html in the div). If you need more info, let me know!   • Why input elements don't render the value passed in ASP.Net MVC?

    This post asks this question but doesn't really give an answer, so I thought I would ask the question differently. I have a page that renders a hidden value from the model: <%=Html.Hidden("myName", model.myValue) %> Since I am passing a value in the value parameter, you would think it would output that value, but it doesn't. The code for rendering input fields has the following: string attemptedValue = (string)htmlHelper.GetModelStateValue(name, typeof(string)); tagBuilder.MergeAttribute("value", attemptedValue ?? ((useViewData) ? htmlHelper.EvalString(name) : valueParameter), isExplicitValue); Basically, if the ModelState (which contains posted values) contains a value for the "name" passed, it will use that value instead of your passed value to the helper method. In my case, I updated the model and my updated value wasn't outputted. If I pass a value to a method, I expect that value to be rendered. Am I missing something in this design or is it just wrong?

  • Asp.Net (C#) MVC Routing - Trying avoid using the same controller in different places and think rout

    Hi Guys, I'm currently building a site which has a bunch of main categories and in each category you can perform a search. Basically, I want my addresses to work like this... When the website loads (as in when someone goes to www.mySite.com) it will redirect them to the default category. www.mySite.com/Category Then when you search within a category, the results would come up in a page like the following. www.mySite.com/Category/Search I want to put everything in one controller and have one main view for the Category and one for the Search, I would then render these based on which category is currently being viewed. Can this be done, maybe with routing? I don't want to have to create a different controller for each category as it's just duplicating a lot of the code. Thanks in advance for your help.

I am basically creating an object in javascript and trying to call a method on the controller that will return a string of html. Not JSON. I've been playing around with dataType and contentType but still no joy. So apologies if the code snippets are a bit messy. Html.Encode is not appropriate for my task because it encodes ' symbol, bypass : (that ruines object attributes declaration) and so on. I wrote static helper class that is used from View like this: alert('<%=ViewHelper.MakeJavaScriptSafe(Model.Message)%>'); I hope there is asp.net in-built function I don't know about for this task.   • zend-framework doctrine, and mvc pattern: what should connect data between models and forms?

    I am learning Zend Framework and Doctrine. I am wondering what is the best practice to connect forms to models and vice versa. I don't know where I should put my code. I have seen in Zendcast video tutorials where author creates methods like mapFormToRecord and mapRecordToForm in form class. Well I guess it is very handy when form is sophisticated and uses many records. Is it a good practice? I somehow believe that form-class should not need to know about data-records. And sometimes we might have model which is used in many forms. So It would be handy to have few functions in that model which would help to prepare data for forms. For example to give an array of id=name pairs so that it might be used in Zend_Form_Element_Select. However I would like to have a consistency. So I don't want to put this code nor in model nor in form because on different situations I act different. So only controller is what is left to deal it. However this will result in code duplication if one form will be used more than in one controller. Moreover controller gets bloated if form is not from the simple ones. Or maybe there is a consistent pattern in those data conversions between forms and models? I think that there is. At least in my simple cases. So maybe a separate class could be a solution? Where should I put such class and how should I name it? Another question: Zend_Form has validators and filter. Doctrine has validators and filters too. Which do we use and when? What is your way of dealing the connections between forms and models? (Sorry if it was hard for you to read my text. I don't have enough knowledge of English language to express myself freely)

An explicit conversion exists (are you missing a cast?) Am i missing some thing... Any suggestion....

  • What is your prefered way to return XML from an ActionMethod in Asp.net MVC?

    I am displaying charts that load the data asynchronously because the searches are the work to fetch the data is quite heavy. The data has to be return as XML to make the chart library happy. My ActionMethods return a ContentResult with the type set as text/xml. I build my Xml using Linq to XML and call ToString. This works fine but it's not ideal to test. I have another idea to achieve this which would be to return a view that builds my XML using the XSLT View engine. I am curious and I always try to do the things "the right way". So how are you guys handling such scenarios? Do you implement a different ViewEngine (like xslt) to build your XML or do you Build your XML inside your controller (Or the service that serves your controller)?

  • T4MVC Optional Parameter Inferred From Current Context

    I have read the other post about this at T4MVC OptionalParameter values implied from current context and I am using the latest T4MVC (2.11.1) which is suppose to have the fix in. I even checked checked to make sure that it's there -- and it is. I am still getting the optional parameters filled in based on the current context. For example: Let's say I have a list that is by default ordered by a person's last name. I have the option to order by first name instead with the URL http://localhost/list/stuff?orderby=firstname When I am in that page, I want to go back to order by first name with the code: @Html.ActionLink("order by last name", MVC.List.Stuff(null)) the link I wanted was simply http://localhost/list/stuff without any parameters to keep the URL simple and short - invoking default behaviors within the action. But instead the orderby is kept and the url is still http://localhost/list/stuff?orderby=firstname Any help would be great. I know that in the most general cases, this does remove the query parameter - maybe I do have a specific case where it was not removed. I find that it only happens when I have the URL inside a page that I included with RenderPartial. My actual code is <li>@Html.ActionLink("Recently Updated", MVC.Network.Ticket.List(Model.UI.AccountId, "LastModifiedDate", null, null, null, null, null))</li> <li>@Html.ActionLink("Recently Created", MVC.Network.Ticket.List(Model.UI.AccountId, "CreatedDate", null, null, null, null, null))</li> <li>@Html.ActionLink("Most Severe", MVC.Network.Ticket.List(Model.UI.AccountId, "MostSevere", null, null, null, null, null))</li> <li>@Html.ActionLink("Previously Closed", MVC.Network.Ticket.List(Model.UI.AccountId, "LastModifiedDate", null, "Closed", null, null, null))</li> the problem happens when someone clicks Previously Closed and and go to ?status=closed. When they click Recently Updated, which I want to the ?status so that it shows the active ones, the ?status=closed stays. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
