• Resolution is Being Stupid. Help me?

  I'm having trouble with a new computer I bought a few days ago. I have come to the conclusion that the resolution of the screen is too small, at the moment it is 1024x768 and I think it should be 1280x960, due to a message given at the resolution tab of the control panel. It states: (!) If your resolution is below 1280x960, some items on the screen may not fit on the screen. The computer is an Asus A54H and runs 64-bit operating system with Windows 7 Home Premium. This link has a screenshot of the screen at the moment, the icons and font are too big and are a little stretched. Thank you in advance!

• 1024x768 gone (1024x600 availble) on HDMI, yesterday it worked?

  When I try to play a game called F-22 Total Air War 2.0 I get an error which says that the resolution 1024.768 is unsupported by the harware.. so I look into my desktop options and it looks like there is an option for 800x600, 1024x600, 1152x648 and higher wide screen resolutions but the 1024x768 is gone? I did play the game yezterday, I disconnected the HDMI, got upstairs, played a few more games, came back downstairs, plugged in the HDMI, launched the game and bam I got the error! I have a ATI Radeon Mobility HD5470 and the newest ATI Catalyst Center downloaded 3 days ago. How can I 'enable' the 1024x768 resolution again? Without it I can't play the game on my Big TV and I will be stuck with my little laptop screen.

  Or how to create an AD(or similar) environment at home? So... I work in this big IT company(they have and AD environment ofc) and I've seen first hand how nice integration and log-in-from-anywhere(roaming?) profiles can be. So I wanna create the same setup at home, where I have 3 machines. Mostly logging in with the same profile and preserving the settings(things like UAC being off, a few group policies I've customized, things like that). How can I achieve something like this?

• How can I sync Access databases and keep them up-to-date?

  I have an Access database on my server. We split it up and use the front-end database for search data and adding new records or reports in local computer. If we update or add a new record, that writes to the back-end of database. I want to use this database in the other building with other servers. Also, those servers have no direct connection. How can I sync both back-end databases to keep the database data up to date? These details may be useful: It's a big amount of data - about 25,750 client records. I guess there are more than 25 tables at 80 MB.

• windows 8 stops working after gparted

  My laptop (windows 8.1) has a big partition so i would like to spit it into two smaller partitions. I tried hirens boot and jumped into gparted (something i have never used before) I resized windows partition (c:) and created a new partition, reboot, and my laptop cant boot I am seeing in gparted - sda1 ntfs recovery 300MB - sda2 fat32 100MB - sda3 unknown 128MB msftres - sda4 is my original C partition - sda5 is the new partition I tried with Windows 8 DVD there are options to automatically fix but it did not work. I also tried with make PC fresh or something like that and windows told me it cant fix because the drive is locked. Any help would be greatly appreciate. I stop playing with the tool now. • Removing BIOS Post Messages

  I am working on a project where a standard x86 desktop system will boot and run a single program until it is shut down. I would like to remove all the bios post messages so that it looks a little more "finished" and cleaner when it starts up. I was hoping that there might by a standard implementation/terms to know about so I can avoid having to dig through every manual to see if there are options, or get some advice on a standard set of tools I should be using. I was thinking about getting a board that has an image that covers up the post messages until you press a key and trying to customize it to all black, but it's not clear if this is a good direction. I started looking for OEM motherboards but my searches were filled with standard commercial stuff, or seemed to be way to big for my toy project. What is the best way to go about removing all the bios post messages and just having a blank screen or "loading" message until OS loads?

• Symlink to /Documents /Pictures etc. in OS X Home Directory?

  I have just purchased a 120GB SSD with the intent of making it my boot drive. I'd like to keep it as lean as possible since, y'know, it's so small (Heaven help me). I've read Can I move my home folder in Mac OS X? and Moving Mac OS X user folders? which discourage moving the entire home dir to a data drive. Is it possible and less-dangerous to leave the home directory on the boot drive but move the big data directories to a slower drive and symlink to them? I have the same thoughts with the /Applications directory, but maybe I should make that a separate question?

• Make my web-server traffic go through proxy?

  I have a question that may or may not be possible. Basically Comcast isn't going to let me host a website on their ISP unless I have a business account. So, I spoke with my uncle who is big into networking and he told me to host my website through a proxy so Comcast cannot associate the website IP with my IP. I have purchases a proxy from proxy-hub.com, but I cannot seem to figure out what to do next. I may be approaching this totally wrong and I may need to create my own proxy server. Anybody have a clue? Thanks.

• Send chrome tab from w7 laptop to w7 HTPC? (Like with iPad to AppleTV)

  For the last couple days I've been trying to figure out how to get open tabs syncing between chrome installs on different computers to no avail. (if it's supposed to work the way I think it should, that is.) I have a laptop that I do all my web browsing on. Once in a while I'll come across some video that's worthy of the big-screen and the surround sound and want to open that tab (or media) on the HTPC. It'd be nice if I could just 'Right click Send to HTPC' and it opens up there with no further hassle. But even opening chrome on the HTPC and finding all my current tabs waiting would be fine. Alas, open tabs syncing doesn't seem to actually open tabs on other devices for me. Has anyone come up with a way to accomplish anything similar? Thanks all!

• Display issues on new OpenSUSE install

  I installed OpenSUSE 13.1 on my newly built PC, but the display is just horrible : the edges of the screen are missing. For example, I can't see all the top part, I can barely read the date and I see "ctivities" instead of "Activities". However, when I take a screenshot everything seems to be fine (the cursor doesn't appear though) the characters are sometimes too big and sometimes too small the cursor is huge and many other strange things. I took a few pictures I'm using an Intel integrated GPU (HD4400) and made all the possible updates with YaST. Any idea how I can fix this? Thanks

• Recommendation for hardware upgrade: thin clients? Or...?

  I work for an animal shelter in Upstate New York. We have about 50 machines running XP Pro. They're connected to a Windows network with a domain. About half of these computers are used for nothing more than using two web-based apps -- one to keep track of our animals, the other to process credit cards. Having a full-blown desktop PC seems like overkill for this purpose. The PCs are three-to-five years old, and I'd like to come up with a plan to upgrade the hardware. Our donations are down (not surprising, given the economy), so cost is a big factor. Can people recommend some options? Some sort of thin client, maybe?

• Windows Command queue?

  i'm thinking if does exist some kind of software that can put in a queue a bunch of windows commands... for example i can say to first copy some file somewhere, then rename those, then delete the old files, then edit one of them etc.... without waiting the effective execution of any of those passages.... this could be useful when copying big files that take a lot and i don't want to sit in front of the computer keeping the eyes on the progress bar... does exist anything like this?

• Can anyone recommend how to fix sore "sides" from overuse of computers? (some kind of RSI)

  I have to use computers for 9+ hours per day (no suggestions about 'use your computer less!' please). I get various kinds of RSI: a little soreness in the hands and wrists, but that's not a big deal compared my main problem: Pain in the sides of my body, under my arms and down the sides of my torso. Driving worsens it. Exercise doesn't seem to help (maybe I need a special exercise). It could be posture related, but I haven't found a way to fix that. Has anyone else experienced this? I find lots of people complaining about more typical kinds of RSI, but not like mine. I am hoping someone with experience can recommend an exercise, treatment, or adjustment in how I use my computer.

  We are running a website that allow users to create their own content, then share it through an iframe. We would like to get more servers to host the user content, and the main one for our website. Each user has a link like xxxx.com/content989856, xxxx.com/content45454545 We were thinking of two options : using a htaccess on the main server that will redirect to the good server but the problem is that if the main server is out, then all the content is out as well using subdomain depending on where the content is hosted, but then if we change the user content from one domain to another one, we will have to change his links as well Do you know a better option or is that really the only two available ? • /var/run/utmp is getting large and slowing my server down

  I removed it and touched an empty verison a few weeks ago and noticed a big upswing in performance for my server. The file was 400+ MB. I've been keeping an eye on it since and I'm noticing it is growing fairly quickly. I tailed the file and I'm seeing a lot of "TTYXXLOGIN" entries. Should I be concerned? Is there a way to minimize it's logging? Should I logrotate it and forget about it? Thanks in advance.

• Trying to build a history of popular laptop models

  A requirement on a software project is it should run on typical business laptops up to X years old. However while given a specific model number I can normally find out when it was sold, I can't find data to do the reverse... for a given year I want to see what model numbers were released/discontinued. We're talking big-name, popular models like Dell Latitude/Precision/Vostro, Thinkpads, HP, etc. The data for any model is out there but getting a timeline is proving hard. Sites like Dell are (unsurprisingly) geared around current products, and even Wikipedia isn't proving very reliable. You'd think this data must have been collated by manufacturers or enthusiasts, surely?

• Missing Desktop Icon Labels in Windows 7

  Hey guys. Big problem that has been bothering me to no end. My desktop icons have been stripped of their icon labels, and nothing seems to be recovering them. To be clear, when I attempt to rename, the text shows up, and when I view my desktop in an explorer window, all text is preserved. System restore to a stock state will not recover. No changes have been done to the computer-- no installs or downloads for two weeks prior to this error. Rebuilt the icon cache, still no response. Anybody know what can be causing this problem? • Identify malicious subnet

  I have been experiencing performance issues on a website for a while, and it always seems to hit around the same time. Having analysed the logs I've found a big spike in requests which corresponds with this slowdown, with all requests coming from the same subnet. It feels to me like an attempt to scrape the site (it is a car hire site and the requests are sequential for each IP and with incremental search criteria) and I would like to identify the source. The Subnet in question is 209.67.89.x which I can see is owned by Savvis however I can't reverse DNS any of the IPs - is there any other way I can gain more info on this (other than contacting them direct - I am also doing this)?

• Whats wrong with my keyboard?

  I have a new kind of weird problem with my laptops keyboard. To be precise with the shift key. Lately the both Shift-Keys doesn't just make the letters big, they also took role of the 2 and the 7 on the numpad. So when i push the left shift key (with num lock) it also writes a 7. When I use the left shift key (without num lock), the cursor goes to the begin of the line. When i push the right shift key (with num lock) it writes a 2. When I use the right shift key (without num lock), the cursor goes to the end of the line. I really don't know what I changed on the computer... it's really weird and really annoying

• LVM incorrectly reported missing after power failure

  We have had a major power failure in the data-center. We are using a set of servers for our storage needs. The main server has several pairs of disks mirrored with mdadm. The resulting /dev/mdX are LVM physical volumes and belong to a big volume-group with all our data. After the powerloss, we had the problem that one of the mdadm devices was not auto-detected due to a missing entry in mdadm.conf. As a consequence, the volumegroup had inactive logical volumes due to the missing PV. We were able to fix the mdadm config and reboot. pvscan shows all expected PVs but one LV still does not come up. vgdisplay shows: [...] Cur PV: 3 Act PV: 2 [...] Neither vgscan nor pvscan show any missing devices. What went wrong? How can we force LVM to activate all PVs?

• Can't connect to ssh after nfs problem

  Hello, I had a problem yesterday with a server that lost connection (S1). From that server, there was a dir shared with NFS to another one (S2), no homedir and not in $PATH, but a dir to store old files for archiving. S1 was back online after a few hours, but now I cannot access S2 because of this (and I'm sure it's because of that because all other services are running without any problem). The ssh connection hangs here: debug1: Entering interactive session. I know a reboot will do the job, but considering this is the NAS of a big app, my bosses will kill me if I do it. Is there any other way to get over this? I tried with different users, but all of them hang in the same place. I connected with HP iLO and not even there I cannot use my username. Thanks in advance.

• Path erased in Debian

  I'm trying to deploy a rails app in Debian, using Apache/Passenger. I was trying to fox a problem with some GEMs and in the process I put executed this in console: export PATH=/var/lib/gems/1.8/bin/:${vendor/cache} Now my path environmental variable is gone, or at least its content. My server is running under Debian 6. Is there a way to recover my path info? Or at least can someone point me where to find the file where that variable i s stored? Some help please. • How I can be alerted if an application is not running in Windows 2008 R2?

  i have a little question. I have a big html file and want to replace lots of things inside a lot of times. The only problem i cant solve is a replace with a variable. Example: <image src="start_files\0002.jpg" style="width:216pt; height:162"> should be transformed in <a href="start_files\0002.jpg" target="_blank"><image src="start_files\0002.jpg" style="width:216pt; height:162"></a> do you have an idea how to do it? I have a windows system with Notepad2 and Notepad++ and i could install a new tool if needed. (like Windows SED). The best solution would be a batch solution where i can add other transformations.
