wpf toolkit (Feb 2010) datagrid with MVVM - style reveals name of view model on 'spare column'

Hi, I've just updated my app with the latest WPF toolkit and I've now got an issue with my styling. When I bind some data with, for example, two columns to the grid, the spare area at the right shows the name of the ViewModel in the header. I can understand why, because the data grids data context is the ViewModel and I'm defining my header style as follows ... <WpfToolkit:DataGridHeaderBorder <Border BorderBrush="Blue" BorderThickness="0,1,0,0"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding}" Margin="4,0,4,0" /> </Border> </WpfToolkit:DataGridHeaderBorder> Do I now need a separate style for the 'spare column' or something? Dynamic Data Associate Related Table Value?

I have create a LINQ-to-SQL project in Visual Studio 2010 using Dynamic Data. In this project I have two tables. One is called phones_extension and the other phones_ten. The list of columns in phones_extension looks like this: id, extension, prefix, did_flag, len, ten_id, restriction_class_id, sfc_id, name_display, building_id, floor, room, phone_id, department_id In phones_ten it looks like this: id, name, pbxid Now, I'd like to be able to somehow make it so that there is an association (or inheritance?) that essentially results in me being able to make a query like phones_extension.ten and it gives me the result of phones_ten.name. Right now I have to get phones_extension.ten_id and then match that against phones_ten.id - I'm trying to get the DBML to handle this translation automatically. Is this possible?

Consider an Explorer-like list view with a number of columns. The data is fetched from a database, and the rows can be sorted by clicking the column headers. When you click column A, you expect the fetched data to be sorted by A - at the database level ("ORDER BY" at the selected column). However, sometimes it is desirable to sort the data presented in the GUI - the visible data (WYSIWYG). How do you combine these two? E.g. How do you allow the user to sort both the fetched data and the data visible in the GUI? Have you seen a GUI that solves this elegantly?

I'm not clear about this.... When having a gridview on the View, is the controller who has to set up the Data source, columns, etc? or I just have to expose the DataBinding stuff, fire it from the controller and let the html/codebehind on the view handle all the rendering and wiring up? To be more precise: on the view should I have private GridView _gv public _IList<Poco> Source { get {_gv.DataSource;} set {_gv.DataSource = value; _gv.DataBind();} } Or should it be (from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/153222/mvp-pattern-passive-view-and-exposing-complex-types-through-iview-asp-net-web) private GridView _datasource; public DataSource { get { return _datasource; } set { _datasource = value; _datasource.DataBind(); } } Maybe I'm having it all wrong .... Everything works fine so far but I'm curious why PagingToolbar does not have an option to use parent Grid store? Silverlight RIA Services. Query fails on large table but works with Where clause

I have a somewhat large table, maybe 2000 rows by 50 columns. When using the most basic imaginable RIA implementation. Create one-table Model Create DomainService Drop datagrid onto MainPage.xaml Drop datasource onto datagrid Ctrl-F5 I get this error: System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Client.DomainOperationException: Load operation faild for query. Value cannot be null. Error is much larger, but thats the beginning of it. The weird thing is that if I narrow the results down with a where clause on the GetQuery, it works fine. In fact six different querys which together result in all of the rows being called works fine also. So basically, I'm sure its not some sort of rogue row. Why do I get this "Value cannot be null" error if I query the whole table? Thanks

Freeze the indent of a row group in DevExpress GridControl

I am required to display a DevExpress WinForms GridControl where the rows must be grouped by a date column. When horizontally scrolling the grid, I am required to keep the group row and group indents fixed to the left of the control (so they do not scroll with the columns). I have so far been unable to find any built-in capability for this. There is the ability to fix a column to the left or right side of the control, but the indent is not a true column. FYI, the group row portion is staying "fixed" by handling the drawing of it to always position it at the left. I do not see a way of controlling the drawing of the indent however. Attempts to custom draw an indent have been unsuccessful so far. We are using version 9.3.2.0 of the DevExpress XtraGrid controls for WinForms. Does anyone have any solutions or workarounds that might allow us to at least give the appearance that the group indents are fixed? Thank you!

Can you guys let me know if there is a good way of handling this in LINQ to SQL? We use stored procedures for Insert, Update and Delete but use LINQ to SQL for all our selects (ease of use). Hello, I'm looking for a way to perform clustering separately on matrix rows and than on its columns, reorder the data in the matrix to reflect the clustering and putting it all together. The clustering problem is easily solvable, so is the dendrogram creation (for example in this blog or in "Programming collective intelligence"). However, how to reorder the data remains unclear for me. Eventually, I'm looking for a way of creating graphs similar to the one below using naive Python (with any "standard" library such as numpy, matplotlib etc, but without using R or other external tools).

Why is my WCF RIA Services custom object deserializing with an extra list member?

I have been developing a Silverlight WCF RIA Services application dealing with mock financial transactions. To more efficiently send summary data to the client without going overboard with serialized entities I have created a summary class that isn’t in my EDM, and figured out how to serialize and send it over the wire to the SL client using DataContract() and DataMember(). Everything seemed to be working out great, until I tried to bind controls to a list inside my custom object. Do I need to decorate the EconomicsSummary class members a little more/differently? -Second, where are the peculiar values coming from on that extra entity? PRE-POSTING UPDATE 1: I did a little checking, it looks like that last entry is the first one in the TotalAccountHistory list. Do I need to do something with CollectionDataContract()? PRE-POSTING UPDATE 2: I fixed one bug in TotalAccountHistory, since the objects weren’t coming from the database their keys weren’t unique. So I set the keys on the Transaction entities inside TotalAccountHistory to be unique and guess what? Now, after deserialization RecentTransactions contains all its original items, plus every item in TotalAccountHistory. I’m pretty sure this has to do with the deserializer getting confused by two collections of the same type. But I don’t yet know how to resolve it…

Ok, so I'm aware of this issue: When SET ANSI_NULLS is ON, all comparisons against a null value evaluate to UNKNOWN SQL And NULL Values in where clause SQL Server return Rows that are not equal < to a value and NULL However, I am trying to query a DataTable. I could add to my query: OR col_1 IS NULL OR col_2 IS NULL for every column, but my table has 47 columns, and I'm building dynamic SQL (string concatenation), and it just seems like a pain to do that. Is there another solution? I was to bring back all the rows that have NULL values in the WHERE comparison. UPDATE Example of query that gave me problems: string query = col_1 not in ('Dorothy', 'Blanche') and col_2 not in ('Zborna', 'Devereaux') grid.DataContext = dataTable.Select(query).CopyToDataTable(); (didn't retrieve rows if/when col_1 = null and/or col_2 = null)

So, I have a table like below. Imagine there are multiple columns, I thought by formatting the <col/> tag I would be able to change the formatting of every <td> in that column. I want to give data in the first column a text-align:center, but it doesn't seem to work. I can get single values and rows returned, but how would I get it to search all columns in my database for the inputted values and return it? I'm talking about showing different hosts sending packets (so hosts on the X axis, time on the Y and arrows to the destination host). It seems like too much elements for tables (especially the arrows spanning multiple columns either way), but on the other hand, divs would be hard to position in the right place horizontally (they'd have to be basically aligned to a specified "column"). Is there any good way out? Any helper frameworks? (I don't want to do canvas stuff unless really needed)

MPI_SCATTER Fortran Matrices by Rows

What is the best way to scatter a Fortran 90 matrix by its rows rather than columns? That is, let's say I have a matrix a(4,50) and I want to MPI_SCATTER it onto two processes where each part is alocal(2,50), where rank 0 has rows 1 and 2, and rank 1 has 3 and 4. Now, in C, this is simple since arrays are row-major, but in Fortran 90 they are column-major. I'm trying to avoid using TRANSPOSE to flip a before scattering (i.e, doubling the memory use), and I figure there must be a way in MPI to do this. Would it be MPI_TYPE_VECTOR? MPI_TYPE_CREATE_SUBARRAY? Likewise, what if I have a 3d array b(4,50,3) and I want two scattered matrices of blocal(2,50,3) distributed as above?

Querying for names

I have a table (say "Demographics") on SQL Server. In this table are the following columns "LastName", "FirstName", "MiddleName", "Prefix" , "Suffix". I have one textbox to search for them on a webpage. My question: Whats a good design strategy for queries where the user could be searching for various combinations of names including last names that have spaces e.g. "Smith James Jr." . Our customers store Jr. sometimes in suffix and sometimes just tack it to lastname. Sometimes Smith James Jr could be the entire last name.

Excel and Tab Delimited Files Question

I am encountering what I believe to be a strange issue with Excel (in this case, Excel 2007, but maybe also Excel 2003, but don't have access to it as I write this). I can reliably convert some server data over into a tab-delimited format (been doing this for years) and then open it using Excel - no issue. However, what seems to be happening is if I have an html <table inside one of the fields, it looks like Excel 2007 thinks it should be converting the table into rows and columns inside Excel (not what I want). As you might imagine, this throws off the entire spreadsheet. So question is, is there any way to set up excel to NOT do this (perhaps some setting in Excel that pertains to reading tab delimited files), or am I missing something? Thanks.

SQLite3's dynamic typing

SQLite3 uses dynamic typing rather than static typing, in contrast to other flavors of SQL. The SQLite website reads: Most SQL database engines (every SQL database engine other than SQLite, as far as we know) uses static, rigid typing. With static typing, the datatype of a value is determined by its container - the particular column in which the value is stored. SQLite uses a more general dynamic type system. In SQLite, the datatype of a value is associated with the value itself, not with its container. It seems to me that this is exactly what you don't want, as it lets you store, for example, strings in integer columns. The page continues: ...the dynamic typing in SQLite allows it to do things which are not possible in traditional rigidly typed databases. I have two questions: The use case question: What are some examples where sqlite3's dynamic typing is, in fact, beneficial? The historical/design question: What was the motivation for implementing sqlite with dynamic typing?
