• Large Django application layout

  I am in a team developing a web-based university portal, which will be based on Django. We are still in the exploratory stages, and I am trying to find the best way to lay the project/development environment out. My initial idea is to develop the system as a Django "app", which contains sub-applications to separate out the different parts of the system. The reason I intended to make these "sub" applications is that they would not have any use outside the parent application whatsoever, so there would be little point in distributing them separately. We envisage that the portal will be installed in multiple locations (at different universities, for example) so the main app can be dropped into a number of Django projects to install it. We therefore have a different repository for each location's project, which is really just a settings.py file defining the installed portal applications, and a urls.py routing the urls to it. I have started to write some initial code, though, and I've come up against a problem. Some of the code that handles user authentication and profiles seems to be without a home. It doesn't conceptually belong in the portal application as it doesn't relate to the portal's functionality. It also, however, can't go in the project repository - as I would then be duplicating the code over each location's repository. If I then discovered a bug in this code, for example, I would have to manually replicate the fix over all of the location's project files. My idea for a fix is to make all the project repos a fork of a "master" location project, so that I can pull any changes from that master. I think this is messy though, and it means that I have one more repository to look after. I'm looking for a better way to achieve this project. Can anyone recommend a solution or a similar example I can take a look at? The problem seems to be that I am developing a Django project rather than just a Django application.

• How do I achieve a 'select or insert' task using LINQ to EF?

  I have an import process with regions, locations, and shifts, where a Shift object has a Location property, and a Location object has a Region property. If a region name does not exist, I create the region, and like wise a location. I thought I could neatly encapsulate the 'Select if exists, or create' logic into helper classes for Region and Location, but if I use local data contexts in these classes I run into attach and detach overheads that become unpleasent. If I include a data context dependency in these classes, my encapsulation feels broken. What is the ideal method for achieving this, or where is the ideal place to place this functionality? In my example I have leaned heavily on the foreign key crutch provided with .NET 4.0, and simply avoided using entities in favour of direct foreign key values, but this is starting to smell. • How to use drag and drop within a UIScrollView

  I am trying to drag and drop UIViews within a UIScrollView. I'd like the UIScrollView to scroll if I drag a UIView so that it intersects the top or bottom of the ScrollView. If it touches the top, it should scroll up. If it touches the bottom, it should scroll down. Once the UIView is moved such that it is no longer intersecting the top or bottom, the scrolling should stop. The first approach I tried was to start an NSTimer whenever I detected that the UIView intersected with the top or bottom of the scrollview. The timer would scroll the UIScrollView bit by bit until it was invalidated. This resulted in very jerky scrolling, since there is no way to predict when the timers will fire. My current approach is to simply scroll all the way to the top or bottom of the ScrollView, like this: [UIView beginAnimations:nil context:NULL]; [UIView setAnimationCurve:UIViewAnimationCurveEaseInOut]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:1.0]; [self.parentScrollview setContentOffset:newOffset animated:NO]; [UIView commitAnimations]; In order to stop scrolling, I try to determine the position of the touch in the touchesMoved: delegate, and use that to calculate the contentOffset to use for the scrollView. The problem is, when I try to get the location in the view via [[touches anyObject] locationInView:self], I get the final end location, rather than the current location. I'm guessing that's because the contentOffset on the scrollView is set immediately. Is there a way to get the actual location of a touch in a situation like this? Or any other way to set the contentOffset when I interrupt the scrolling animation?

• Django Error - AttributeError: 'Settings' object has no attribute 'LOCALE_PATHS'

  I am trying to learn django by following along with this tutorial. I am using django version 1.1.1 I run django-admin.py startproject mysite and it creates the files it should. Then I try to start the server by running python manage.py runserver but here is where I get the following error. • pyscripter Rpyc error

  pyscripter 2.5.3.0 x64, python 2.7.7 anaconda 2.0.1, windows 7 I was using pyscripter and EPD python happily in 32 bit, no problem. Just changed to 64 bit anaconda version and re-installed everything but now pyscripter cannot import rpyc -- it runs with internal engine (no anaconda), but no such error in pure python. • Crash: iPhone Threading with Blocks

  I have some convenience methods set up for threading with blocks (using PLBlocks). Then in the main portion of my code, I call the method -fetchArrivalsForLocationIDs:callback:errback:, which runs some web API calls in the background. Here's the problem: when I comment out the 2 NSAutoreleasePool-related lines in JTBlockThreading.m, of course I get lots of Object 0x6b31280 of class __NSArrayM autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking errors. However, if I uncomment them, the app frequently crashes on the [pool release]; line, sometimes saying malloc: *** error for object 0x6e3ae10: pointer being freed was not allocated" *** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug.   I am creating a calendar control of sorts... One thing I need to know is how many weeks are there in a Month... So NSCalendar rangeOfUnit:inUnit:forDate Seems to be exactly what I need... Except I am noticing something that seems off and I can't quite figure out why this is happening... The following code... Any clues? Edit on 3/20/2010: Seeing as how I couldnt use rangeOfUnit:inUnit:forDate to calculate the number of weeks in a month. I decided to figure out a different way of calculating the same value. I figured I should do this in a non-Gregorian localized way, so I attempted to start with getting the number of days in a week, but I got the result of 28 days in a week.   I have three Tabs in my WinForm; depending on the selected RaioButton in the TabPages[0] I added few dynamic controls on the relevant TabPage. On Button_Click event the controls are added, but the prob is the I'm not able to remove the Dynamically added controls from the other (irrelevant) TabPage.   My aim is to extend the eclipse QuickFix component and automate the process of solving syntax errors. Basically, the QuickFix component provides a list of solutions and my task is to select the best possible fix and apply it to the buggy code. • Haystack / Whoosh Index Generation Error

  I'm trying to setup haystack with whoosh backend. When i try to gen the index [or any index command for that matter] i receive: TypeError: Item in ``from list'' not a string if i completely remove my search_indexes.py i get the same error [so i'm guessing it can't find that file at all] what might cause this error? it's set to autodiscover and i'm sure my app is installed because i'm currently using it. • nHibernate Domain Model and Mapping Files in Separate Projects

  Is there a way to separate out the domain objects and mapping files into two separate projects? I would like to create one project called MyCompany.MyProduct.Core that contains my domain model, and another project that is called MyCompany.MYProduct.Data.Oracle that contains my Oracle data mappings. However, when I try to unit test this I get the following error message: Named query 'GetClients' not found. • Can't change pivot table's Access data source - bug in Excel 2000 SP3?

  I have a set of Excel 2000 SP3 worksheets that have Pivot Tables that get data from an Access 2000 SP3 database created by a contractor who left our company. Unfortunately, he did all his work on his private area on the company (Novell) network and now that he has left us, the drive spec has been deleted and is invalid. We were able to get the database files restored to our network area by our IT Service Desk people, but we now have to re-link everything to point to our group area instead of the now-nonexistent private area. If I follow the advice given elsewhere on this site (open wizard, click 'Back' to get to 'Step 2 of 3', click 'Get Data...' I get a message that the old filespec is an invalid path and I need to check that the path name is invalid and that I am connected to the server on which the file resides. I then click on OK and get a Login dialog with a 'Database...' button on the right. I click this and get a 'Select Database' dialog which allows me to choose the appropriate database in its correct new location. I then click OK, which takes me back to the 'Login' screen. I can confirm that it has accepted my new location by clicking on 'Database...' as before and the NEW location is still shown. So far so good - but if I then click on OK I get two unhelpful messages - first I get one saying that Excel 'Could not use '|'; file already in use.' - although no other files are in use. Clicking on OK takes me back to the 'Login' dialog. Clicking OK again gives me the same message as before telling me that the OLD filespec is invalid (as if I hadn't changed anything) - but clicking on the 'Database...' button shows that the correct (NEW) database location is still selected. Can anyone tell me a way of using VBA to change the link information without having to spend hours fighting the PivotTable Wizard - preferably similar to this way you update an Access Tabledef:- db.TableDefs(strLinkName).Connect = strNewLink db.TableDefs(strLinkName).RefreshLink Thanks!

• How to register assemblies using Windsor in ASP.NET MVC

  This is how my project looks: TestMvc (my web project) has a reference to the DomainModel.Core assembly where my interfaces and business objects reside. The class that implements the interfaces in DomainModel.Core is in a different assembly called DomainModel.SqlRepository; the reason behind it is that if I just want to create a repository for Oracle I just have to deploy the new dll, change the web.config and be done with it. When I build the solution, if I look at the \bin folder of my TestMvc project, there is no reference to the DomainModel.SqlRepository, which makes sense because it's not being reference anywhere. Problem arises when my windsor controller factory tries to resolve that assembly, since it's not on the \bin directory. So is there a way to point windsor to a specific location, without adding a reference to that assembly? My web.config looks like this: <component id="UserService" service="TestMvc.DomainModel.Core.Interface, TestMvc.DomainModel.Core" type="TestMvc.DomainModel.SqlRepository.Class, TestMvc.DomainModel.SqlRepository" lifestyle="PerWebRequest" /> There's many ways around this, like copying the dll as part of the build, add the reference to the project so it will get copied to the \bin folder or install it on the GAC and add an assembly reference in the web.config. I guess my question is specific to Windsor, to see if I can give the location of my assembly and it will resolve it.

• SQL Agent Logon - What is going on?

  I have a DTSX package that is called from a SQL Agent Job. The DTSX package references a file at a fixed location (e.g. e:\mssql\myfile.txt). On most machines, this location exists, but on some I have to manually map this (which is not a problem - I know a better solution would be to use package conifgurations to dynamically pull the file location, but this is not an option here - and anyway I'd like to understand what is going on) I have set up the agent service to run as a specific user (e.g. myuser) When I log on as this user and map the directory, then run the dtsx package directly, then all goes well. When I run the package through a SQL Agent Job, the file cannot be found. If I add a command line job step to the agent job to map the drive: net use e: \\svr\location Then all works file also. So what is going on in the backgound? How come the SQL Agent user requries the drive mapping even when I am logged in as this user.

Is it possible to get around this class-path size bug?

  When i attempt to add a file with russian symbols in name to the model instance through default instance.file_field.save method, i get an UnicodeDecodeError (ascii decoding error, not in range (128) from the storage backend (stacktrace ended on os.exist). If i write this file through default python file open/write all goes right. All filenames in utf-8.   I have an client app that runs on several machines, and connects to a single SQL database. On the client app, the user has the possiblity to use a local SQL (CE) database or connect to a remote SQL database. There is also a box where a backup location can be set. For the backup of the remote SQL database I use the following code: var bdi = new BackupDeviceItem(backupFile, DeviceType.File); var backup = new Backup { Database = "AppDb", Initialize = true }; backup.Devices.Add(bdi); var server = new Server(connection); backup.SqlBackup(server); When developing my application, I wasn't aware that the given backupFile is written on the machine where the SQL server runs! And not on the client machine. What I want is "dump" all the data from my database to a local file. (Why? Because users may enter a network location in the "backup location" box, and backing up SQL immediately to a network location fails. So need to write local first and then copy to the network in that case.) I there an alternative to the method above?
