• Windows XP screen chopped off

  Ok this one has be confused as all get out! One of the teachers at the school I support has a dell latitude e5500 and the desktop shows about 3/4 just fine, but the right 1/4th shows whatever was on the last (like its not refreshing (yes I tried refreshing the screen)) For example if I open up internet explorer then minimize it the left 3/4ths minimizes, but the right 1/4th stays pulled up. Another interesting piece of information is that if I change it to God awful 800x600 it works perfectly fine. The sceen works together and has no problems.... The only way I have found to get rid of this is to reload the laptop and that is getting old quick! Thanks for your help! Msindle

• USB webcam detected in KVM, but doesn't work

  I have installed XP in a virtual machine running on Linux with QEMU/KVM (qemu-kvm-0.11.0-4.5.2). I export my Linux webcam to KVM using the switches "-usb -usbdevice host:046d:0929". The XP guest sees the webcam and the drivers install, but the camera only shows a black image. When I open the camera in Windows Explorer, it says "0 images" and a black image, while on a real XP, it says "1 image" and shows the video from the camera. I tried the same with a different webcam, but the result is the same. Any ideas what might be wrong or how I could debug this ?

• Grandma's Computer - Can a user that belongs only to the "Users" group in Windows XP install malware, virus or IE addons?

  I am trying to figure out if having a user in the "Users" group will be enough to prevent her from install unwanted software. The things that I don't want the user to be able to install are: virus malware bandoo stuff Internet Explorer Addons To put you in context, I am thinking of my grandma's computer, I want her to be able to read all her email stuff and attachments, but without the hassle of needing to reinstall the whole computer every few months. The computer will run Windows XP, with some free antivirus. It will not be part of any domain. It is just a home computer. Linux, I have tried making her use it, but she was already accustomed to Windows and was not really an option to have her re-learn where was the shutdown button. So, are these considerations enough to prevent her installing unwanted software? What other options come to you mind? Thanks

  Not quite sure if this question is better asked here or on superuser.com Hi All, My Win7 Ultimate no longer 'UAC prompts' me when I open the services applet (administrative tools). I can manipulate services without ever confirming the elevation. Yes, UAC is still enabled. Yes, I've rebooted to make sure this is not due to a former UAC elevation of explorer.exe or so. It looks like a big security hole. Does anyone have an idea about the reason for this behaviour? Or how to investigate it? TIA,

• How do I find the source of soft page faults?

  I have Windows 7 x64 computer that according to Performance Monitor has 70,000 page faults / second when idling. That's seems like a lot to me (every other computer I check has basically 0 page faults / second when idling). If I use Resource Monitor or Process Explorer to check hard faults, I see that they are basically 0. So all the page faults are soft. Normally, soft page faults are not a problem, but I suspect they might be causing issues for this computer given there are so many. I would like to identify what programs are causing the soft faults. Are there any tools that exist the display the number of soft page faults for each process?

• Remove Sync Center icon

  I accidentally marked a shared folder as "Available Offline" in Windows Explorer on Windows 8.1 computer. This seems to have "woken up" the Sync Center and caused the Sync Center icon to be displayed in the system notification area. Even though I've undid that by marking the folder as not available offline, and furthermore have reset CSC and disabled Offline Files, the Sync Center icon still appears in the overflow section of the system notification area. How do I remove the Sync Center icon and preferably disable the process that is displaying it? Debugging info: The registry shows that stuff is enabled, even though the Sync Center and Offline Files dialog don't indicate that anything is active. • cygwin rsync over ssh very slow

  I have 2 machines running Windows Xp SP3. I have cygwin installed on both, version 1.7. I have rsync and ssh installed on both, and configured using default settings as per ssh-host-config and ssh-user-config programs provided. I moved the public keys into their respective locations, and basically ssh is working fine. i began an rsync operation, using: rsync -av --delete --hard-links local_dir username@other_machine:/some_dir well... on both machines, the processor is running near idle, no heavy usage. I checked IO using process explorer on both machines, and that too is at normal levels (1~2 MB/s), so I can't see where the bottlenecks are, because network performance is aweful. I'm not going over 1MB/s... when a normal file copy using windows sharing achieves some ~10 MB/s.. What could be wrong?

• How do you open a folder in OSX using the keyboard?

  On Windows, pressing enter when you highlight on a folder in Windows Explorer will open that folder. On OSX, pressing enter when you highlight a folder edits the folder's name (like F2 in Windows). Is there a keyboard shortcut to do the same thing on Windows, so that you'll open the folder? It doesn't have to be enter, but I'd like to know if there's another hotkey that does it. The reason why I ask is because I like to navigate through deep folder structures by using the arrow keys for navigation and enter to drill down into them.

• USB AutoRun Dialog: Open a webpage option not shown in dialog

  I am attempting to make our webpage open when someone plugs in our USB device. My Problem: When we plug in the USB device the autorun dialog appears but there is never an option to open/run the webpage we have specified. See below pic of the dialog we see. Isn't there meant to be an option that says something like "Open in Internet Explorer" or etc.? What we are hoping to achieve is to have another option below 'Use this drive for backup' that says something like 'Open in Web Browser' or something that will ultimately open our webpage when the users decides to. • Error "iertutil.dll not found" after installing IE8

  I rolled out IE8 to a group of test users in our organisation overnight, and after logging in in the morning, several of the users reported the error Userinit.exe error and explorer.exe error - iertutil.dll not found After clicking OK, the PC just hangs with the background visible. A few people are reporting this error in various forums, but "do a system restore" is not a good solution. We can easily roll back to IE6 by replacing the DLL, or by uninstalling IE8. We just need a flawless rollout! We're on Windows XP Service Pack 3. Edit: We deploy via SMS. Initially we had 2 machines with the error, but somebody made a mistake with the test package and it rolled out five nights in a row. By the end of the five nights, 4 more machines had developed the same issue.

• Why does the CPU usage reach 100% when laptop is plugged in?

  I have an HP Elitebook 8440p with Windows 7 Ultimate, i7 Processor and 8 GB RAM. For the last couple of days, when I plug-in my laptop for charging, the CPU usage shoots up to 100% and remains there for around 15 minutes. No offending process shows up in Task Manager/Process Explorer but the laptop is practically unusable for that time. The CPU usage becomes normal when I remove the power cord but shoots up again when plugged back. This is happening with different power adapters/wall sockets so it might not be a faulty adapter issue. Why is this happening and any pointer to resolve this issue?

  We have a Ubuntu 11 server running VMware virtual machines. We manage it using VMware Infrastructure Web Access 2.0.0. My colleague is able to use it successfully with Internet Explorer 9. However, I am stuck with an empty login page that says "Loading" in the title when trying to connect. It happens in all browsers (IE9, Firefox, Chrome, Opera). My colleague also gets stuck at "Loading" if he tries another browser. How can I resolve this problem?

• Is there a way to disable specific Spybot Immunization rules?

  I've been having problems using a desktop sharing application, which I've traced to the Immunization protections applied via Spybot S&D. Specifically, the problem has been narrowed down to the rules in the \SOFTWARE (Plugins) categories under the Internet Explorer groups. Once I disable these Immunization categories, everything in the application works fine. Each of these categories appears to include ~900 protections on the system. I suspect that the root cause of my problems could be narrowed down to just one, or perhaps a handful, of the settings that get applied in these categories. However, I can't find any options in Spybot S&D which would allow me to drill down to the individual protection rules and choose which to enable or disable. Is there something I'm missing, or is this not a feature available via the GUI? If it's not strictly supported in the application, is there a way to work around it by manually editing some of its files or registry settings? • Trojan infection help please

  Hey, I was browsing some websites and somehow obtained a trojan through some sort of silent download. Google Chrome started acting funny and wouldn't load web pages and neither would internet explorer. Only Firefox worked. I rebooted my computer and as usual logged into my email account as well as my bank account online completely forgetting about the infection. Could my information have been sent to the person or people or wrote the trojan? I downloaded Zone Alarm and took care of the issue, I'm just worried about when I absentmindedly logged into my email account and bank account online while I was infected.

  I use msysgit on Windows to use git, but I often want to navigate through a Windows-style *.lnk shortcut. I typically manage my file structure through Windows' explorer, so using a different type of shortcut (such as creating hard or soft link in git) isn't feasible. How would I navigate through this type of shortcut? • hardware: delay and distinct 'click' before hard drive access

  I have a windows 7 box stashed away in my closet, containing (among other things) 2 big HDDs linked together as a mirrored volume - basically a super lazy NAS / media server. I've noticed that when that drive is accessed (whether locally, on the machine itself, or remotely, from another computer, or my xbox, for example) there's a noticeable pause, and then from the computer itself, a 'click!' noise, after which the drive is accessed; e.g. open \\computername\shared\, wait 2 seconds, hear 'click!' and then see files appear in windows explorer. Any ideas? Otherwise the drive preforms normally - is it a windows thing? a HDD-about-to-die thing? Or a "yeah that always happens, you've just never noticed it before" thing?

• Windows 2003-R2-Server: Process "System" takes large chunks of CPU time

  I have a domain controller running 2003 R2. The server behaves very well when restarted daily, however, each day it is not restarted, there's a process called "System" that takes enourmous chunks of CPU time (up to 95%). The server supports AD, WINS, DNS, has Kaspersky Endpoint Security running, and manages backups via Arcserve 15. When I tried so far: Process Explorer (ex-Sysinternals) shows that the "System" process has no sub-processes. In the "Threads" tab of the detailled view I can see that 90% of the CPU time is used up by "ntkrnlpa.exe+0x803c0". The "Interrupts" process is running at 3-5% of CPU time, I'm not sure if this accounts for the amount of CPU time that System takes.

• Good free software to track and graph memory and CPU usage on Windows?

  There are many questions on Linux memory tracking, but I haven't seen any for Windows. In my case however its a Windows XP Pro box I need to track the memory and CPU usage of. The reason I need it is due to a server program I'm trying that is eating all my processor and some of my memory which is freezing my RDP session and System Explorer and even makes it difficult to login physically. As this is a very constrained server I'm working off of (768 MB RAM with Pentium 4 which disappears with this program), I need a program that doesn't run/require a webserver. I can give it a MySQL database if necessary however. Is there any suggestions for such a program?

• Will the other directories on my C drive still be visible?

  My Windows 7 ate itself, corrupted a few files, now refuses to boot. On the same drive were other directories of various assorted non-Microsoft applications I like to use. After the crash, I have been mounting those from outside (as F:[whatever]). If I go ahead and reinstall Windows 7 on that drive and use the drive again as my primary, will those other directories be visible to it from inside? Meaning if I boot up my new installation of Windows from within that drive, will I be able to see those other old directories via Windows Explorer on the C drive (where any haven't been run over by the reinstalled OS)? • Missing menu items for Azure SQL tables within SQL Server Management Studio?

  I have a table (say Table1) that is replicated via SQL Data Sync Agent across a local SQL Server 2012 as well as an Azure SQL Server (part of Microsoft Azure). Everything about Table1 (schema, table values etc ) is identical to the best of my understanding. However, when I list and right click Table1 from Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2012 (SSMS), I get some very different menu options, even for seemingly basic stuff. Lets focus only on the 'Design' menu item: It is visible for Table1 on the local SQL server in SSMS It is missing for Table1 on Azure SQL via SSMS It is visible for Table1 (as Open Table Definition) on Azure SQL when reaching it via Visual Studio 2012 (Server Explorer - Data connections) This is seen in the screenshots below: Now I use scripts from some real stuff (esp when I need to check in the SQL scripts etc) but this difference concerns me to some extent. Am I witnessing just a tools artifact in SQL Server Management Studio when connecting to Azure SQL? or is it something more serious about limitations of Azure SQL itself (although, just seeing the Design surface is so basic!)?

I loaded SQL Server Management Studio on the machine running the instance of TFS (and also the SQL backend for TFS) and ensured that I had roles "serveradmin" and "sysadmin". How do I run this report? Specifically, what permissions are required?

• Windows 7 "Could not reconnect all network drives" on boot

  Windows 7 won't reconnect to my network drives on startup. Once it is done booting opening Windows Explorer and clicking each share will mount them. Windows 7 Enterprise N Service Pack 1 I have attempted formatting the windows machine - first thing done to machine was to map the network drives, upon reboot they were disconnected. It is running on an Crucial M4 64gb SSD. The host of the network shares is a Ubuntu-Server machine connected through a gigabit switch. A modem provides dhcp, although both these machines have static IP's defined. It won't reconnect the drives regardless of whether they're SAMBA shares or NFS shares - therefore I believe it's an issue with the windows machine. Ubuntu 11.10 (GNU/Linux 3.0.0-12-server x86_64) I've tried using ip address instead of netbios name for mapping shares on the windows machine, Also tried setting EnableLinkedConnections=1 gpedit.msc Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - System-Logon - always wait for the network at computer startup and logon = yes

• What causes random clicking/navigation sound while PC is idle?

  On my Dell D630 laptop running Windows XP Pro SP3, I randomly hear the "Windows Navigation Start.wav" played. This happens even if the only application active on the PC at the time is Microsoft Outlook and no one is touching the keyboard or touchpad. The start navigation sound IS enabled for Internet Explorer (I have IE 7 installed), but it is not running (no window open, anyway). The clicks are rapid, as if being executed automatically by a script or process, and they always come in threes: "click-click, click". I don't see any changes on the display and I don't know how to figure out what's running that could cause this. I have tried to leave Windows Task Manager open in the hope that I'll see a process name jump to the top of the list briefly, but it doesn't happen that often and I guess I'm not quick enough. The PC is slower than I think it should be, but System Idle Process is at 96 - 99 during the event, and for most of the time when I'm not actually using the machine. Any ideas?
