• External Hard-Drive Randomly Ejects; Stays On

  My 250GB I/O Magic USB external hard-drive randomly disconnects / ejects from the computer after between 2-30 minutes of use. When this happens, the blinking activity light on the front of the hdd turns off; however, the disks can still be heard spinning. Unplugging & replugging in the USB does not reconnect the device and the activity light remains unlit. The only way to continue using it is to flip off then on the power switch of the hdd. The hard-drive was formatted with MBR partition table and 2 NTFS volumes. I recently tried switching to GUID with two Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but the problem remains. This error occurs with my new Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard as well as with my DELL E520 with Windows 7 Ultimate.

• Changed Password Won't seem to work for account

  Bit of an odd problem. I've got a server I can SSH into as one of two logins: root or erik. Once I've logged in as erik I've tried to switch to the root user: # sudo su - root Password: And entered the password. After several failures I thought I might have forgotten. So I SSH'd in as root, and changed the root password: # passwd Now back to the other shell (erik) and attempt to run sudo su - root and again, it won't accept the just changed password. Any ideas?

• Toshiba Satellite laptop connected to HDTV

  I have a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6014 laptop running Windows 7 64-bit connected to a Toshiba Regza 42" HDTV with an HDMI cable. The laptop has a 16" display and the screen resolution is set to the maximum/recommended of 1366x768. The display output is set to "LCD+HDMI". The display looks fine on the laptop screen but on the TV it is not a "full screen" display, it leaves a good 3" black border all around all 4 edges. When I switch the display to "HDMI only", it is now too big for the TV screen and some of my desktop icons are no longer visible off to the side. What is the best way to set this up? I guess that since a 16" and 42" displays have different native resolutions, a LCD+HDMI mode is defaulting to the optimal size for the 16". But when I set it to HDMI Only, what is the appropriate resolution for a 42" full screen display? Thanks

• VMWare player grabbing mouse focus

  I am using the newest VMWare player on a Windows 7 machine. When I have the player open on one of my two monitors I get some weird behavior. For instance, if the player is open on monitor 2, and I minimize firefox on monitor 1, my mouse will instantly switch to the monitor 2 and be centered within the VMWare player window. This happens when I minimize any window after having been working in my VM. I hope there is a setting or tweak that I am not aware of that can remedy this. EDIT: Through more testing I have found that this only occurs when the VMWare player is full screen on either of my two monitors. • CORAID using only 1 of the 2 available NICs for AoE traffic

  We got 6 CORAID shelves in my workplace. On 2 of them I see AoE traffic on only 1 of the 2 NICs that are attached to the SAN switch. We got jumbo frames enabled on all devices. Both NICs show up when I issue the aoe-interfaces command. This wouldn't bother me too much if the throughput performance observed on the "bad" shelves using bonnie++ wasn't half of the result of the "good" shelves. The "good" shelves are older SR1521 model and they have ReiserFS on their LUNS - not that I think it makes a difference - and the "bad" shelves are newer SR2421 model and have JFS. Any help as to what is going on and how to rectify this would be greatly appreciated. BTW: even the lower performing shelves outperform another iSCSI device we got, but that is another story... • My powerpoint seems working in right-to-left

  I don't seem to find a way to switch it off. See picture. There seems to be no way to say the paragraph is not RTL. There are addable RTL buttons in the customize ribbon dialog, but they are grayed in ribbon cfg view, even though buttons that are actually there are also grayed in the same way. Looks like there's no way to get some other buttons shown on the office ribbon. I already found how to do it with VBA, but I find no way of doing it from UI and I spent much time searching and trying. Am I senile?

• Computer shutsdowns when trying to boot

  I have an IBM ThinkCentre, and I was talking to someone on Skype when it suddenly just shutoff. When I rebooted it asked me to start windows normally or in safe mode, but as soon I choose an option (Any of them) it shuts back down. So I thought it was a problem with windows and tired booting from a Hirens disk, but same thing. I've been using this computer without problems for over a year know. Any idea's for me to try? Unfortunatly I don't have any powersupplies or extra RAM to switch out to try anything like that. EDIT I left it off for a while and it's booting to windows now. I would still like to know what might have been causing it to do that if you have any ideas.

• Bind DHCP Server to Network Bridge

  My wireless router died, so I decided to route everything through my server. So I installed a second NIC and a wireless card to be my new network: 1 NIC to the Modem, 1 NIC to the switch, and the Wireless to... Well, wireless. Anyways, I got far enough to get DHCP to work on just ONE adapter when I used Internet Connection Sharing (I couldn't get RRAS set up for the life of me), then I decided to try bridging the wireless and second NIC. Now, the DHCP server won't bind to the bridge, but I can enter manual IP's in my clients and it'll connect to the Internet. I also tried changing my wireless adapter's IP to 192.168.0.2, and to 192.168.1.1 to try to set up a separate scope, but to no avail. Running Windows Server 2003

• Windows XP IIS5 performance across Network

  Hi, Just wondering whether Windows XP with IIS5 running needs any extra configuration to be suitable as a web server...I'm not considering using this for anything other than a web server on a small network for testing development etc One of the reasons I'm concerned though is that we've deployed an asp.net application to a workstation with Windows XP, and running the application using a browser on the machine (so accessing it through localhost/myApp/page.aspx and not accessing it through the network) runs the application really quickly. If another machine on the LAN accesses the same page (using http://ComputerName/myApp/page.apx) then the whole application runs noticeably slower...yet the computers are connected on a gigabit switch...so I wouldn't have thought network latency or bandwidth could be an issue... Does Windows XP need anything etc enabled or changed or network settings for it to work correctly?

• Thunderbird message panes

  I have just switched from Outlook to Thunderbird and one feature that I am missing is when I would click a folder it would open a message in the message pane automatically. Now it is always blank. I have it set to remember the last one opened so if I switch back and forth it is there, but if I just click a folder the first time that I invoke it the message pane is blank. The reason I upgraded to 3.0 is because I saw this behavior in 2.0 and thought it would be fixed. I remember setting something in 2.0 that allowed this feature. Is there a way I can downgrade back to 2.0?

  I'm running a few php sites off apache and want to start rails dev. I've installed rvm/nginx and can get my ruby site by going to websiteroot.com:8000... How do I pass ruby.websiteroot.com to websiteroot.com:8000? What's the best way for me to route a subdomain for ruby dev?? I'd switch to nginx completely if it weren't for all my php sites--seems like it's easier to just proxy for ruby. Advice?   I'm new to Linux. I am working with a Redhat 5.5 server and am using a Java-based SFTP script that will allow multiple users to upload text files to a server. I am undecided if each user will have a separate directory or if I will use a naming convention that includes their customer ID. The files include some personal information about their LAN settings, so I prefer to use SFTP as apposed to FTP. It is my understanding that SFTP is encrypted (Also, I have a Java class configured to upload via SFTP, so I prefer not to switch protocols unless their is a very-good reason). The prototype is for a system that will support large numbers of customers and the thought of continually adding and removing clients through the command line seems highly impractical. (Again, I am new_to/learning Linux and Redhat). What are normal conventions for giving multiple users permission to SFTP upload files with a unique username and password for each.

• How do you sync tabs between computers with Mozilla Firefox Sync?

  Mozilla says that with Firefox Sync if you are working on one computer with 5 tabs open you can then switch to another computer or device and Sync can or will update the second computer with those tabs. How do I do this? BACKGROUND I have setup Firefox Sync on both devices and they have been synced. How do you sync them again? Is it automatically syncing them in the background? How often? How do you sync the tabs? Are the passwords synced? Documentation The documentation below describes how to add another device or computer to Sync. It says that when you add the device it syncs it. • How can I setup a subnetwork using DDWRT and a 2Wire?

  Ok, I'm having a bit of trouble getting this setup. I'm not really sure what direction I need to be looking in. I am on ATT UVerse and I have to use their horrible 2Wire Modem/Router. But with this router, I have very limited control over my network and my wifi range is too small for my house. But, I have a hardwire ran to my TV which I have hooked into a switch and split the line to my PS3. The problem I'm having, is I don't know how to get the Buffalo DD-WRT setup as a subnetwork so that the PS3 can find my Media Server. • Brightness keeps changing in Windows 8.1 (on Macbook Pro Retina)

  Before anyone gets too excited, it's not the "Adaptive Brightness" feature of the OS. I've already turned that off. Also it seems to have nothing to do with ambient light. It actually seems to do with the average "color" of the display. If I'm working in dark-themed Visual Studio, the brightness "pops" brighter. When I switch to the browser, it "pops" darker. So it's kind of adaptive brightness based on average pixel color (or something like that). What makes it rather annoying is that the brightness pops, rather than transitioning gradually. What is this feature, and how do I disable it (or at least make it smoother)?

  Hey all! I run a disposable e-mail service that accepts all incoming mail and forwards it to a PHP script that stores it in a database for people to view. Before now, I have been on shared hosting with cPanel, which makes it easy to pipe e-mails to a script. Now, however, I got my own VPS, and it doesn't have cPanel. How do I pipe e-mails to script? Further, how do I pipe emails to any address on certain specified domains to my script? You see, aside from the main domain, there are several alternate domains that people can use if the main domain is blocked, and on each domain I want any address to be usable (xyz@domain, abc@domain, anythingelse@domain). The VPS has Ubuntu 9.04 installed, and I have been experimenting with Postfix, though I can switch to Exim or Sendmail if it is easier.

• Virtual memory on Linux doesn't add up?

  I was looking at System Monitor on Linux and noticed that Firefox is using 441 MB of memory, and several other applications are using 274, 257, 232, etc (adding up to over 3 GB of virtual memory). So I switch over to the Resources tab, and it says I'm using 462 MB of memory and not touching swap. I'm confused. What does the virtual memory amount mean then if the programs aren't actually using it. I was thinking maybe memory they've requested but aren't using, but how would the OS know that? I can't think of any "I might need this much memory in the future" function..

• TrueCrypt: Open volume without mounting

  I have a corrupt TrueCrypt volume. When I try to mount it, the password is fine but I get an error: hdiutil attach failed no mountable file systems. I just need to open it without TrueCrypt trying to mount it too, so I can use that partition in a data recovery program. Also it's just an image file volume. I have read the documentation here: http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=command-line-usage But I can't figure out which switch I need to use to only open an image and not mount it. I am using the Mac version, and I have set up an alias for the TrueCrypt shell command, so I can just type: truecrypt -t -v - ?? [][]..

• Ubuntu: How to login without entering username and password

  I'm a newbie running Ubuntu 9.10. I have two users (wife and me), and each user's screensaver is set to lock so that on wakeup, we get to choose which user's desktop to go to. However, Ubuntu requires a password, so this is pretty tedious. I'd like to switch users without entering any password. I know about this trick that works for the boot login, but it doesn't deal with multiple users. Is it possible to set empty passwords for users in Ubuntu, or skip the password in other ways? (I'm expecting real Linux users to suggest that passwordless users must not get any rights and there be an admin user with a strong password. Yes, you're right. But that's not what this question is about. Thanks.)

• What Excel formats are (most) compatible with LibreOffice and Google Docs?

  I use Excel (and occasionally Numbers), but I want to be able to share with users of Google Docs and LibreOffice (and I may want to switch in the future). What's the most compatible format to save my Excel spreadsheets in? I'm asking as a question here rather than merely Googling for a list of formats that LibreOffice and GoogleDocs support (although I'm doing that too, and will post the answer if no one else does) because there are likely to be hidden "gotchas" that only someone who has experience using all of the above applications is going to know about. Answers that include personal experience will be preferred over those that only post a link to the relevant facts on google.com and libreoffice.com.

• jetty crash trouble shooting

  Recently I switch to amazon ec2 + jetty9 + oracle jdk7_u45 for cost saving. I found the jetty server is very unstable. It crash randomly without any jvm dump file. Tried to enable stdout with the dumpBeforeStop=TRUE. It won't append the dump messages to stderrout.log before crash. Seems it isn't related to OutOfMemoryError as I have enabled the gc verbose options and found it still has many available memory before crash. : 162604K-3340K(176960K), 0.2240040 secs] 248332K-89101K(373568K), 0.2736860 secs] [Times: user=0.01 sys=0.01, real=0.28 secs] Tried to downgrade to jetty8 with different jdk combination (jdk6 / jdk7). Still got the same problem. Tried to remove all jvm options and using "sudo java -jar start.jar" to run jetty. Still crash. Any other way to shoot the problem?

I want know, how I can create an isolated test environment for software testing purpose only, so anything will happen in that test vLan will not make trouble in the production environment. "Host-only networking" is the solution or there is a better way to achieve this result? My requirements A. Hosts should be able to access Internet and a Network Share drive but not Production network B. Hosts should connect each other inside the Virtual LAN C. I should be able to take automatic or periodic backup or snapshoot and deploy snapshot when necessary. Whatever your answer is, please give me steps, how to do, if possible. • HD Video Capture Card w/ Good API?

  Does anyone here know of a good HD video capture card that has a good (comprehensive) API? I administer a few servers that do some video encoding right now, but when we make the switch to HD cameras, they won't be sufficient. In addition to this, the servers we have now are black boxes, closed to me except to start/stop the video capture device. I'd like to be able to roll my own, so we can better integrate it with our existing systems, but I know almost nothing about what kind of HD capture cards are out there, and if I can avoid spending money just to test their APIs that would rock. So does anyone have any experience with this? All our other software is in C#, and I'd like to set up the new servers with web interfaces to start/stop the capture (also in C#, using .NET 3.5 probably). I'm not sure how language specific these APIs would be, but that's what I'm working with just as a reference point. I appreciate any help the community can give!

• Adding Blogger template to predefined list

  I am working on updating a Blogger layout for a friend's website, and haven't had much luck in searching for this. Essentially, I want to create the template and show them before pushing it live. At present, there are lists of sample templates (Simple, Dynamic, etc), and I'd like to add mine as a clickable button for them to preview. When I attempt to import it, it is automatically published as the live template...but I don't want it to be seen before they review it. I want them to be able to switch between the current version and my version to see what is preferred. Is this even possible? It would be extraordinarily straightforward in WordPress, but I've never used blogger before...

• gparted won't boot from liveCD

  Hello, Fedora 12 2.6.32.9-70.fc12.i686 I downloaded the gparted iso and burnt it to a CD. gparted-live-0.5.2-1 This GParted Live was created by: create-gparted-live -l en -b u -e e -d sid -m http://free.nchc.org.tw/debian -s http://free.nchc.org.tw/debian-security -g http://free.nchc.org.tw/drbl-core -n 2.6.32-3 -i 0.5.2-1 The files and folders: isolinux live syslinux COPYING GParted-Live-Version I put the disk in and reboot. Nothing happens. I just get a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner. I then have to switch of the power button to get it to reboot. I have done this a number of time and the results are the same. Can anyone tell me how to boot from the gparted liveCD? Many thanks for any suggestions,
