• Redundant Microsoft server solution for small company

  I'm planning to change one server Microsoft SBS 2003 with SharePoint, Exchange and SQL database into something that will provide me with some redundancy and won't be single point of failure. I was thinking to buy 2x exactly the same physical servers and put 2 virtualized servers on HyperV or VMWare on each. Then i would put SharePoint, Exchange and SQL on that 1 physical server (shared onto 2x VM's). I would like 2nd physical server to be exact duplicate of the first one so that when 1st server goes down (for reboot or hw failure), 2nd takes care of everything so that users don't even see anything changed (in terms all their emails, sharepoint stuff is available). My questions are: Will I have to pay for licenses for both servers even thou only one instance of SharePoint, Exchange, SQL will be used at same time? What are proposed solutions to do that? Any additional hardware I would need, any complicated software configuration to be expected to configure such redundancy so that when one physical server goes down 2nd one is taking care of rest? What problems should I expect? This solution is for 60 people. Later on it may or may expand.

• BIOS corrupted? How to proceed? Acer Travelmate 290

  I have a older ACER Travelmate 290 (manufactured in 2002 or 2003), which I recently tried to upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10. After doing the upgrade process it appeared as if I had a problem with my x server configuration, as on the first reboot post-install I heard the Ubuntu startup sound, but had a black screen. I thought I would then reboot again to drop down into text-mode to trouble shoot the x configuration problem. However, when I tried rebooting, something went wrong and since then when I start up the machine I get absolutely nothing except the first hardware check (i.e. HDD light flashes, CD/DVD drive spins, etc.). Other than that the screen remains totally black and I have no HDD or processor activity at all. I have tried restarting it a number of time holding down all kinds of key combinations to try and coax it into the BIOS (if possible) with no luck. I have also tried putting in both a live Linux disc and a Windows install disk without any luck. With a disk in the drive it will spin for a few seconds and then stop. All this has lead me to suspect that the BIOS is somehow corrupt (not sure about the right terminology). I have tried putting a new BIOS image and installer program downloaded from ACER on a USB key to see if it will run when I start up the machine, but no luck. I'm not sure if this method of interacting/updating/flashing the BIOS will work outside of Windows/DOS as both OSs are mentioned kind of ambiguously in the documentation. I have also taken the laptop case apart and inspected the various cards and cannot find any obviously burned out components. I'm not sure how to proceed at this point in terms of components to try, or how to try and load a new BIOS image onto the board. Any advice here would be great, especially from those with experience with this particular line of laptops. Thanks!

• Setting up vncserver on OpenSolaris zone

  I am running OpenSolaris 5.10 and set up a sparse zone(inherits most of bin directories from global zone). I ended up copying many etc and var files from global zone, eventually most of the stuff(firefox,gvim, etc.) working through ssh via X11. However, I am having problems setting up vncserver on the zone. • Is something infecting my Google searches?

  I starting doing some experimentation toward making a browser userscript for Google searches and when opening the JavaScript console noticed something that strikes me as very fishy: The page at https://www.google.com.au/search?oq=XYZ&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=XYZ displayed insecure content from http://50.116.62.47/js/chromeServerV45.js. The page at about:blank displayed insecure content from http://96.126.107.154/amz/google.php?callback=a&q=XYZ&country=US. (XYZ is a placeholder for whatever the search terms really was.) Is it likely that I've picked something like a drive-by browser infection? I've tried all kinds of searches for these URLs and other keywords but I've had no luck finding anything conclusive about whether they're malicious or what they are: 50.116.62.47 chromeServerV45.js 96.126.107.154 amz/google.php The only extensions I have installed are either widely used or written by myself. But something else is strange and I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence. I updated my Windows Chrome browser today to version 23.0.1271.64 m and now my Extensions tab as well as my settings tab are blank, so I can't try disabling my extesions. • Web SMTP Server(foo.com) will not send mail to exchange server which is also(foo.com)

  I think I understand this problem fully, but I do not know how to approach it or where to go in terms of troubleshooting. I've got my one domain http://foo.com that runs a Zen Cart installation that needs to be able to send emails to users(order confirmation, password reset). This works fine to send to any other domain BUT foo.com. I'm running a locally hosted exchange server that is foo.com, and we can send and receive email just fine. If I run tail -f /usr/local/psa/var/log/maillog I recieve this error: Apr 1 10:08:51 foo qmail-local-handlers[25824]: Handlers Filter before-local for qmail started ... My question is, how can I get the foo.com(web) SMTP service to handle emails meant for my exchange server([email protected]) or how do I handle the mail that needs to be sent to our exchange server? • LASER x Deskjet Printer

  I am about to buy a color printer. I had a b&W laserjet printer in the past but since then I use deskjet for decades. I need a printer that can deliver high quality as these photo deskjet printers but I am tired of paying ink that costs $9,000 per gallon of ink (1 gallon = 3.785 liters = 300 cartridges = $9,000). So, I was pondering about buying a color laser, but I am not sure if these printers can deliver the same quality and worth the investment in terms of toner consumption. I remembered that my old laserjet printer was able to print 1100 pages per toner cartridge. The deskjet printers I have can print 500 pages per cartridge. Price by price, 2 deskjet cartridges have more or less the same cost as one toner cartridge and in theory prints almost the same. I am not sure if this is true for color lasers. What you guys can tell me about quality, toner cost and cost per page using laser or deskjet. Does it worths the change? Remember that a deskjet printer costs $50 and a laser printer costs $200. thanks.

• can't ssh within LAN, but can connect from outside

  A strange issue: I have a desktop running Ubuntu 10.04 behind a Netgear WNR1000 router performing NAT. I would like to be able to ssh into the desktop from my laptop (running Windows 7 and Cygwin). When at home, both the desktop and the laptop are connected by wireless (the desktop is in a different room from the router). sshd seems to be running fine, since ssh localhost from the desktop works without trouble. Also, ssh my.ip.address from my laptop when it is not behind the router works fine (I am forwarding port 22 on the router to my desktop). However, ssh same.ip.address from within the LAN fails with "Connection refused". ssh 192.168.local.ip.address fails with a different message, "Connection timed out". I can connect if I first ssh to a machine outside the LAN. So far I haven't found anything with Google because with the search terms that seem like they would be relevant, the vast majority of people have the opposite problem - i.e., they can't connect from outside the LAN but can connect within it. I can port forward through a remote server when I'm at home, but this seems like a totally absurd way to connect two computers on the same home LAN. I have already tried stopping and starting sshd on the desktop. Any thoughts?

• Thunderbird alerts when expected email does not arrive

  I am on Ubuntu 12.04 using Thunderbird as email client. Both are up to date in terms of updates. I have bunch of nightly jobs that do the work and send a status mail. It gets tedious if you keep getting same/similar mails every day so I ended up writing a mail filter rule which causes emails to end up in their respective folders automatically. If things are going ok, I really don't need to read emails. Failure emails are sent to different alias - if the job runs. We recently discovered that one of the job had not run for few days as someone accidentally disabled it. In order to avoid such problems in future, I would like to setup thunderbird in such a way that if I don't get email from given address within given duration, it should alert me. My dream solution is to set up frequency - some jobs do run every 4 hours. Is this possible? Can I setup Thunderbird (preferred) or other email client for reminding me when expected email does not show up. Based on comments and answer I received, here are the reasons why I would like to use Thunderbird. We are already using Thunderbird. It has calender support via plugin, so I suppose someone is already watching time to remind us about the event. May be this another type of event. Additional job is one more failure point, may complicate life if it has to monitor multiple hosts. Additional tools - same thing, one more failure point. Thunderbird can be run across all the platforms we are using - Windows and Ubuntu. It sort of becomes platform independent solution.

• Can't connect to public WiFi with MacBookPro at coffee shops and libraries

  The Problem: I can't connect to public, unencrypted WiFi at my local public library or Peets Coffee. My Setup: Late 2006 MacBookPro running 10.5.8. I have Parallels installed. It's supposed to work like this: 1) Connect to their unencrypted WiFi network 2) Open a browser which redirects you to their "enter password/agree to terms" page. 3) Browse normally. I can connect to the WiFi network, but when I try to authenticate I always get stuck in a redirect loop. It's been like this for a while. Even before I upgraded to 10.5.8. I never have trouble with encrypted networks or regular open WiFi. What I've tried: Disabling Parallels connections in Network Prefs. Superstition: somehow Parallels installed something in the network stack that's messing me up. Pinging the IP address of the WiFi node I'm connected to. I can ping it, it's there, but I still get stuck in this authentication redirect loop. Tried different browsers, tried different cookie and security settings. Even tried IE under Parallels. No dice. Tried flushing DNS cache. Asked library and coffee employees for help. It didn't go well. My Question: Anybody else have this problem? What should I be looking for?

• Linux Sound Drivers - Recompiling kernel with ehcd-hcd module

  I just installed Linux Mint and I am trying to get my usb soundcard to work. I am completely new to Linux so I have only been learning about all the important parts of the OS this afternoon. No one I know has compiled kernel so I can't ask anyone. I am following instructions on this site: http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Benutzer/BigMc#Final-setup-of-US-122L-US-144 "Recompile your Kernel with ehcd-hcd as a module: Instructions for Ubuntu (german) Change "Device Drivers - USB support - EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support)" to "M" when configuring. Make sure you also install the kernel headers." I know how to do any of these processes. Someone mentioned a package manager. Is recompiling basically in layman's terms reinstallation? Where do I go to the change device drivers? Cheers Edit: I am attempting to be able to use my Tascam US-144 on Linux Mint. Apparently, to use it properly it has to regress to functionality of a former unit (US-122), so according to the instructions a USB port has to be USB 1.0, rather than USB 2.0. I've tried using that ndis** programme for wireless drivers but with no success.

• Sun-JRE on CentOS-4.8 RPM error: post-install scriptlet failed, exit status 5

  I have a server with CentOS 4.8 installed. The provided is rubbish, but there's only a few months left, and they're busy being sued by Chase bank, so I doubt I can get CentOS 5. I wiped the server clean using Virtuozzo, and found that the default image is VERY empty. I even had to install yum myself. I've reached the point where I want to install TomCat. I downloaded the Sun JRE as a .rpm.bin file, did chmod a+x and ran it. • Ways to go about optimizing website performance WordPress, Amazon EC2 Apache and RDS MySQL

  I have 6 WordPress websites running on 1 single EC2 instance. All the the websites are connecting to databases in 1 same RDS instance. Earlier today, traffic to the largest website peaked and the RDS instance went bottle-neck - CPU utilization was 100% for over an hour. It affected all of my websites as it took them all forever to load. In order to prevent such issue from happening again, which of the following will matter most so that I invest time and effort in first of all? (I will work on all later, I just need to prioritise now) To improve caching for all websites To fine-tune the database server To fine-tune my Apache server What will be the effect on user experience for my websites? Some quick searches show that I should limit number of concurrent connections to my web server but wouldn't that prevent users from accessing my websites? More background: My largest website has 140k visits and 660k page views a month. The other 5 websites should add up much less than that. I'm using a large EC2 instance as the web server I'm using a medium RDS instance as the database server What I've already done: Use W3 Total Cache plugin for caching for most the websites, especially the largest one (I can barely anything else in terms of caching I could do for the largest website) Am I using my resources wastefully or is there simply not enough resources for my websites - or rather, how do I answer that question myself?

• sql 2008 disk layout on a budget this is for database mirroring

  Guys I'm rolling out a SQL database server that will be used to back Sharepoint 2007. Right now I need some advice on my disk layout. I have two Dell servers that are configured a little differently in terms of storage. The principle server will be using a combination of local storage and san storage. I have to work with what I have the organization is currently all allocated on san storage it was like pulling teeth to even get what I have to work with now. My disk setup on the principle is as follows: raid 1 for OS raid 10 for logs raid 10 fiber on san for high IO databases raid 10 sata on san for content databases My question in regards to the principle server is where should I place the temp db? I thought about placing it on the fiber raid 10 which will be hosting my high IO Sharepoint SSP databases my only other choice is to move it to the raid 1 os partition which I’m sure you guys will be against. Now let’s talk about the mirror server it is not connected to the san it is all local 6 15k SAS drives. Now my question is the same do I put tempdb on the os partition or do I leave the os partition and use a single raid 10 for everything? Any help you can provide is much appreciated.

• Please advise on VPS config choice (with SQL Server Express)

  Hi all, I might be interested in getting a VPS hosting plan for some small personal sites and .NET projects. Was thinking of Softsys Bronze Plan, as my current shared host plan is with them too. The stuff I want to host has grown beyond the capabilities of a Shared hosting plan, and I also want more control over the IIS/ASP.NET configuration, that's why I'm considering VPS. The main config details would be: Hyper-V 30 GB of diskspace 1 GB of RAM More info here: http://www.softsyshosting.com/Windows-VPS-HyperV.aspx Does anyone have experience with this plan (or something similar from another host), and maybe could answer these couple of questions: Bronze has a total diskspace of 30GB. Is the OS part of this quota or not ? If so, how much does a base configuration with Windows 2008 take up in diskspace ? Would you advise Windows 2008 R2 or Normal. Or would you advise to use Windows 2003 with this config. I'm planning on running a SQL Server Express install too. Would 1 GB of RAM be enough for both the Windows 2008 (R2) and SQL Express. The database load will not be that very high (a couple of 1000 records returned each day). The DB will most likely be far away from the 4GB limit, that's why I'd go for a SQL Express instead of paying extra licensing costs for a SQL Web install. But I'm more concerned about performance. Would you recommend Softsys as a VPS host ? I've been with them for one year for my Shared hosting plan, and have no complaints so far. Also, as I have no VPS experience, what are the pitfalls I need to be aware of, in terms of performance mainly, but maybe in other areas too ? Mathieu

• CMS/Wiki to use for a HTML5 video site

  Greetings. I want to put up a website with instructive screencasts, and allow for people to add comments to them. I would like use the Video for Everybody technique, partly because I dislike Flash and because it helps in a small way to move the web forward [while being backwards compatable]. I recognize that HTML5 is still in draft, and that support for it varies. I do have some hosting space, and can run Perl, PHP, and Ruby on Rails applications, with a MySQL backend. I should mention that part of my working job involves running some web servers, and that I am a programmer by training (with only a limited familiarity with Perl and PHP, and none with Ruby). I should mention why I don't particularly want to go with a video hosting site (like YouTube or Vimeo): Flash Video Resolution and Quality [I'd like to put up 800x600 videos] Videos promote a club that is not stricly non-profit [ie. may fall afoul of Terms of Service] I'm already paying for web hosting, and free video hosting comes with time and bandwidth limits I don't want there to be two locations where you can comment on the video Now, having said all that, I'd be quite comfortable putting up my own HTML pages, except: that's so web 1.0! :) [ie. it does not allow for comments] I also want to do some blogging and possibly put up a wiki; the site will not be entirely screencasts So, can anyone recommend a CMS (or Wiki, or similar application) that I can customise for this purpose?

• An easily customizable linux distribution using minimal disk space?

  I'm looking for a linux distribution that can be easily used to create my own distribution that's the same system with some software installed. So basically I should be able to create an iso which, when installed, will have the linux distribution with my desired installed. More specifically, I plan on installing mysql and a bit of my own software which shouldn't be too big. However, this distribution needs to be extremely small in terms of disk space. The distribution, including mysql should not exceed 100mb. It should, of course still be able to connect to the internet and perform other standard functions. I don't need X/any sort of window manager, and would prefer not to have it since it would increase disk usage. Currently I have tried ttylinux and tiny core linux. I've found that ttylinux, while is extremely small, has almost nothing so that mysql can't even be installed. Tiny core linux, on the other hand is a bit too big. I've found openembedded and linux from scratch, but I would prefer for the install and build process to be much easier. What other distribution would you recommend for my purposes? Minimizing disk usage is the most important, followed by ease of installing and creating the custom distribution.

• postfix (for sending mail only) multiple domain setup

  I have the following problem, I have a Centos 5.4 VPS hosting a few nginx sites (some static, some cakephp), I would like to be able to send email from each sites contact page through postfix to my google apps hosted email (different accounts for each site) so that apps can then send out an auto email to the person filling in the contact form etc I have a bare-bones postfix installation with the following added into the main.cf config file. from using this guide virtual_alias_domains = hash:/etc/postfix/virtual_alias_domains virtual_alias_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/virtual_alias_maps (both of these files have been converted into db files using postmap) I have configured DNS correctly for each site and setup SPF records. (I'm aware R-DNS will still reference my actual hostname not the domain name and cause a possible spam issue but one thing at a time) I can telnet localhost and the helo localhost so that I can send a command line email from an address in the virtual_alias_domains to an email in the virtual_alias_maps file which seems sends without giving an error but it is sending to my local linux account not the email address specified. my question is am i approching this the wrong way in terms of the virtual alias mapping or is this even possible to do in the manner im trying.   I need to rewrite a bunch of urls (about 100 or so) for SEO purposes, and there may be more being added in the future (probably another 50-100 later on). I need a flexible way of doing this and so far, the only way I can think of is to edit the .htaccess file using the rewrite engine. For example, I have a bunch of urls like this (please note that the query string is irrelevant, and dynamic; it could be anything. I was only using them purely as an example. I am only focusing on the pathname--the part between the hostname and query string, as marked in bold below): http://example.com/seo_term1?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=seo_term http://example.com/another_seo_term2?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=seo_term http://example.com/yet_another_seo_term3?utm_source=example_ad_network&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=seo_term http://example.com/foobar_seo_term4 http://example.com/blah_seo_term5?test=1 etc... And they are all being rewritten to (for now): http://example.com/ What's the most efficient/effective way of doing this so that I may be able to add more terms in the future? One solution I came across is to do this (in the .htaccess file): RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ / [NC,QSA] However, the problem with this solution is that even invalid urls (such as http://example.com/blah) will be rewritten to http://example.com instead of giving a 404 code (which is what it is supposed to do anyway). I'm still trying to figure out how all this works, and the only way I can think of is to write 100 more RewriteCond statements (such as: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} =/seo_term1 [NC,OR]) before the RewriteRule directive. For example: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} =/seo_term1 [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} =/another_seo_term2 [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} =/yet_another_seo_term3 [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} =/foobar_seo_term4 [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} =/blah_seo_term5 [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ / [NC,QSA] But that doesn't sound very efficient to me. • Video output vanishes and it isn't the video card... suggestions?

  I have a high-end dual processor Dell workstation that operated for several years without problem. Recently, the video output has gone flaky, in the sense that after 2-3 days, it loses synch with the monitor (sometimes you can still see a hashed-mess of the what you expect to see on the screen). Poking at the keyboard, and accessing the file system on the machine from over the network, indicates that the machine is running fine and its just the video. A reboot fixes the problem... for another day or two. This in effect makes the machine unusable. So, I replaced the video card with an exact duplicate bought from e-bay. (I checked after the dupe arrived to be sure, yep, same model number). I still get the same behavior. So unless I believe that both video cards are broken the same way, I have to beleive this is a problem with the motherboard/power supply, neither of which I am inclined to replace. The only other possibility I can think of is a Windows update to the graphics driver. How would I check for this? Anybody had a similar problem? Otherwise we're junking what used to be a perfectly good machine. (Another couple of hours of more wasted effort and that's it in terms of economics anyway).

• What are best practices on virtual lab/test bed architecture?

  I am currently preparing a new small virtual environment for development and testing with Windows Server + SQL Server + AD + Sharepoint + Exchange + IIS(ASP.NET) + Biztalk + ?, for a small (up to 5) dev team. What are pros and cons on different approaches, eg. splitting up over different machines or packing everything up per machine. I your experience what are the best practices I should follow in terms of architecture and various system/servers placement. What to share and what to split per person. I would like to achieve some flexibility for the dev and testing process (so teammebers would not be steeping on each other's toes) and limit administrative effort needed to propagate settings, integrate work items and revert changes when something breaks up. It's not supposed to be an everyday development working environment, more a tier 2 developer testing environment, and not yet an integration or QA testing environment with formal change process. IMO the two borderline solutions are: creating one all-inclusive machine for each dev team member giving them freedom to manage creating shared environment managed by the one with somehow formalized change request process What golden mean would you recommend, and why?

• Need Info on the Hidden Switch in SET - "/S" How to implement

  I am having some problems doing a proper search of "SET/S" or "SET /S" on google and other search providers. The difficulty arises with the SLASH "/", it is commonly used in search engines to add a "nearness" to the search parameter. I have found no way to escape the SLASH when searching for a SLASH. For those on this community, try searching this domain with the two search terms listed above. It just doesn't work, it ends up looking for SET S instead. But I digress. So Im asking the uber-guru's on this board to help me find out about the documentation of /S and how to implement SET /S in a batch file. SET is an internal DOS/cmd commandand allows many things incuding prompting the user, integer math and writing environment strings. in looking at this link: http://www.robvanderwoude.com/os2set.php it appears that the /S is only for OS2 but im thinking that this might not be the case, due to this: http://www.dostips.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2704, apparently used with substings and macros. any help is much appreciated

My clients/employers provide me with tools and licensing support. They have corporate lawyers, planning/accounting/purchase departments for these issues. The questions that I ask is the matter of scalability and efficiency (saving my and others time) in my developing work. For ex., Just because I need autentication against Windows AD it is time-saving to use ADAM instead of deploying full-fledged AD with DC + servers + whatever else? Nobody is forcing you to use Windows XP I shall not rush into re-installing all my operating systems on all my development machines (at home, at client premises) just because a few guys have a lot of fun downvoting development-related questions in serverfault.com. If I do so, I make a joker from me in the eyes of my clolleagues et al Update: I unmarked this question as answered since it had not even adressed the question, at least mine. Should I understand that Terminal Server PRO, allowing Windows® XP and Windows® Small Business Server 2003 to host multiple remote desktop sessions, is illegal? • Recommendations for hosting large videos

  I recently created and put a 45-minute, 300 MB video file on my website and told a mailing list about it. Checking my site stats, I see that I've used 20% of my "unlimited" bandwidth for the month. As I want to be able to have several videos like this, clearly, I need to consider other options. The appeal to hosting files as my own site (aside from the supposedly unlimited disk space and bandwidth), is to be able to have control over the format, resolution, and quality of the video(s), as well as to ensure that it is clear that I'm the copyright holder (although the videos will be under a creative commons license). I find that for the screencasts I'm making, having a high resolution (say 3/4 of 1024 * 768) really makes seeing what is going on on the screen easier. It is also always a plus to not have the experience marred by advertisements. One more wrench to throw in is that while the videos are non-commercial, they do promote a club, and it seems that that falls afoul of some terms of services (especially for free services; while free is very nice, I will certainly consider putting up some money.) What recommendations do you have for (fairly) long, high-resolution videos? Should I look in depth at sites like YouTube and Vimeo, should I be considering a filesharing site [I have no qualms with someone downloading the entire video first -- I wouldn't want to watch 45 minutes in my browser!], hosting files with Bittorent (ugh -- I think that'd reduce my audience), or should I be looking into other web hosts (and if so, who?)
