• How do I cancel windows server 2003 repair install?

  System: Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Scenario: NTDS db is corrupt and all attempts to fix with esentutl fail. Ran chkdsk which seemed to repair disk error and give access to the ntds.dit file but still esentutl fails. (Attached the drive to a different server to run the esentutl) Error: Access to source database '[path to copy of]/ntds.dit' failed with Jet error -1022. Operation terminated with error -1022 (JET_errDiskIO, Disk IO error) after 0.170 seconds. This error occurs on any disk I cpoy the files to including original location in C:\WINDOWS\NTDS\ Now enter the "Stupid!" and "what was I thinking!?" part (must be the late hour...) Stupid: No updated backup - after using a backup I get a network password error in the lsass error. what was I thinking!?: Started the install repair from the original CD but the install fails since the AD fails to start. Now I cant boot into any mode (safe mode, AD restore etc) nor complete the repair install. I would really like to avoid a fresh install since I have the Exchange server on this DC and would rather migrate to a new server than have to start from scratch. Thanks!

  Many times, we come across one-off lectures from famous Computer Scientists. Last year, I came across one by Ms. Barbara Liskov, but I could not go because the University Hall was bit far. Tomorrow, there is one by Dr. Knuth! Now the problem I am facing is, "I don't know much about the material he is going to talk", so I am not sure if I should plan and I fear it will be like going for a "temple". :) What is your advise and general strategy that you have followed whenever you wanted to attend a talk or lecture wherein, it may have been worthwhile if it were an introductory tutorial, but instead you were sitting in an advanced 1 hour lecture by a famous scientist.

• How can i get almost pixel perfect collision detection in a multiplayer game?

  I'm currently working on a multiplayer game for iPhone. The problem i have, as with all multiplayer games, is that the other user will always see everything at a non-constant delay. The game I'm making need to have a almost pixel perfect collision detection, but 1 or 2 pixels off is not that big of a deal. How can I possibly get this working? I guess I could just set local player to also be at X ms delay. However this will probably just be worse and feel sloppy when the user input. I know this problem is probably something network programmers deal with everyday and I would be glad if someone could give me a possible solution for this.

• Copying VBoxAdditions to usr/share/virtualbox folder

  Since for some reason VBox does not find the Additions on the internet, I was trying to install them in the Ubuntu directory Vbox is looking for them - which is: usr/share/virtualbox but I am denied permission to do so. Any way around it? I am relatively new to ubuntu (know how to use the GUI, but still learning how to talk to the machine proper, so many things will be new to me; used to be power user/analyst for MS Windows, 98-Vista, so not a PC newbie, but still I'd say Linux newbie). • How to reduce fan noise with some latest Dell laptops, Desktop PC's?

  I have a few new Dell laptops and desktop PC's. Some of them have extremely noisy fans. The technicians who are sent by Dell refuse to attempt to fix things when they see that the OS is Ubuntu. They seem to be comfortable dealing with machines running MS Windows. For Linux, is there any way to slow or lower the fan speed? Please can anyone advise how it should be done. I have tried lm_sensors but failed.

  I was trying to install a new WSS v3 Sharepoint on a 64 bit Windows 2003 server today but the installation was giving some error saying i would need to allow ASP.NET 2.0 in the web server extension in IIS.  Looking at the IIS there was a ASP.NET 2.0 32 bit allowed but not for a 64 bit. I tried registering the aspnet_regiis but no luck by doing so: For the 32 bit verison %SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i For the 64bit version %SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i I get the error "The error indicates that IIS is in 32 bit mode, while this application is a 64 b it application and thus not compatible." The difference is the \Framework64 folders So my next guess was to find a way to disable the 32 bit and then allow the 64 bit version. And luckily enough i found this link    MS to the rescue So just ran : cscript %SYSTEMDRIVE%\inetpub\adminscripts\adsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 0 and the registered the %SYSTEMROOT%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe -i and that was it

• System locks up at login after latest update on 12.04

  For starters, I am a noob when it comes to Ubuntu and Linux...but I am hopeful that I have the "light" and the error of my past MS ways :) ..... After a recent update last week from 12.04 to 12.04.1 my system now locks up at the login screen. Before the update the system would run but must admit it ran EXTREMELY slow. I have installed 12.04 on a Dell P4 2.4 Ghz, 2 GB DDR Ram, 80 GB IDE HD and an integrated Intel 3D Extreme Graphics. Any ideas on why now the system locking up at login screen? • Fresh install CentOS 6.4 64b with directadmin slowly consumes all memory and crashes

  Dear server fault community, This is my first question on server fault, i'm new to server (mis)configuration so please forgive me for asking something stupid :) I'm running Directadmin on a CentOS 6.4 64b with 4GB memory and over 10000Gh virtual machine. I migrated my websites because my former vps couldn't keep up anymore. Only half of the websites from this 1GB machine were migrated jet. So the migration is still in progress and already my server crashes every day. The server performance up until that moment is perfect. The directadmin log files show nothing out of the ordinary. Yesterday only the mysql server crashed but it also crashed the entire machine before. The memory usage in DA seems to be normal: directadmin directadmin (pid 3923 22158 22159 22160 22161 22162 )8.75 MB dovecot dovecot (pid 3851 ) 47.8 MB exim exim (pid 1350 ) 1.29 MB httpd (pid 21525 21528 21529 21530 21531 21532 21546 21571 21742 21743 21744 )490.4 MB mysqld mysqld (pid 1299 ) 287.8 MB named named (pid 3807 ) 16.3 MB proftpd proftpd (pid 1481 ) 1.91 MB sshd sshd (pid 1173 21494 ) 5.16 MB Restarting services immediately frees up memory, but slowly over time the memory usage increases(about 24 hours to crash). The commands: # sync # echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches Will free al memory correct. I could just create a cronjob but it seems the wrong way around to me. I can't seem to pinpoint the cause. Any advices, references or tips are highly appreciated! • Work with 64-bit VM in Windows 7

  I attended a Microsoft Office and SharePoint 2010 HOL 1 day workshop last week and wanted to setup a VM to try the new features in my own laptop. The presenter in the workshop implicitly mentioned a tool called VirtualBox (because it's not a MS product?) but I have no clue what it is at that moment. Until today, I saw a very useful blog and thanks to Guy and Rolly. • Gaming blew fuse: how to overcome?

  I've been gaming for a while now. When playing certain games this PC goes into overdrive. The fan/fans start/s to sound like a jet engine it/they get/s so busy. Also I have smelt burning when this has happened. The fuse blew on the 4 socket adapter I was using recently. On the following thread someone said this could be due to the PSU not being strong enough to handle the load, in what it seems could be a related issue someone had, although the person who posted this question did say that blowing a fan on their PC stopped it crashing in that case: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2047543/gtx-650-overheating-issue.html. This is exactly what they said: Your GPU isn't overheating. 70+ before it would shutdown and cause a restart. Make sure your PSU is strong enough to handle your new system at load and possibly run Memtest to check your RAM (although not BSOD'ing and just shutting down points to the PSU). This (the PSU part) makes more sense to me than it being to do with dust etc, since it seems a more plausible explanation of why the fuse blew. The PC has no problems except when playing certain games: i.e. TERA Rising and WoW with add-ons (I think WoW is ok as long as I don't have more than 1 add-on (Healers Have To Die)). I'm just wondering if anyone knows or can suggest what I might be able to do to be able to play these games without this problem occurring. The PC's spec is this: Display: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 8GB RAM (6 available) Processor: AMD FX (tm) - 8120 Eight-Core Processor - 3.1 GHz, 4 Cores, 8 Logical Processors I have read on another post that forcing vsync in the Nvidia Control Panel helped with what seems could be a similar problem, so I plan to see if that solves it, God permitting.

  Actually in my system having 2007 office then i am reading the 2003 .xls file with using the 2007 connection string string ConnectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source=" + Filename + ";Extended Properties=\"Excel 8.0;HDR=YES;\""; data is not reading. But if the first row first column data length is lessthen 255 then the following first columns data is cutting up to 255 character. If the First row first column is morethan the 255 character then the following first columns data is reading fine. Is there any back word computability is there?

• vlc 1.1.9 not working properly

  I have installed vlc 1.1.9 on wubi installed Ubuntu 11.04 using Ubuntu Software Center. Now when i tried playing videos in vlc (any format) full screen mode doesnt show controls and usually doesnt gets me out to window mode. it sometimes crashes to login screen. I tried the video output to 'X11 output mode' and 'XVideo output (XCB)' but the above problem persists and also bring another problem. full screen mode doesnt responds always when it does, it shows the video over the desktop instead of inside the player. the only way to get ubuntu to function normally is to restart the system. I tried with not using the 'Embed video in interface' but still the same problem. vlc runs perfectly well in windows. How can i make vlc function properly on my system or i need to install another player? • How do I run Microsoft Explorer 8 plus on Ubuntu?

  First off, you should know I'm a Ubuntu newbie who has become passionate since my strangely low-priced Dell computer showed up with Ubuntu loaded on it and it could do almost everything I need from a computer. But now I've got a problem. I know, it's like asking how to use a cassette player on your computer, but in South Korea EVERY website is made to work with exclusively on MS Explorer PLUS Active X, which Microsoft finally killed with 9. Hence, I have to use 8, as there are some Korean sites I need to access for searching, banking, etc. So I see that the way to go is to load PlayOnLinux, but then I it tells me to delete these. Do I really have to do that? Should I just hit "Install Anyway"? Or would that be just asking for trouble?

• Check if the vector is behind another or maybe opposite directions?

  I'm doing a network game and on the client side, i interpolate the client position with the server sent extrapolated position. The client has its own physics simulation wich is corrected by the server in steps. The problem is when it laggs and i 'kick' the ball, the server gets a delayed message and sends me the position backwards of the client position wich makes the ball goes back and forth. I want to ignore those and maybe compensate that on the server, not sure though. The problem is the clock difference on those case are 0.07ms or 0.10 ms wich isn't that high to ignore the message i guess. When i get the server position, i extrapolate with the clock interval * serverBallVelocity Can i check if my new ball server position is behind my actual ball vector position? I tried to use the dot product after normalized the two vectors to check if they are opposite but it ain't working properly. Any suggestions on checking that?

• Where to go from here, how to improve / learn more

  I finished University around 4 years ago double degree in Software Eng/Comp Sci. Got my first job at a startup in my final year, was with them for 2.5 years then started my own business. So far everything is going great, lots of clients and stead work etc, but coming right out of uni and into a start up I never had any form or senior software engineer guiding my work or suggesting improvements etc... Whats the best way for me to improve & learn more? Books? MS Exams? Other? I develop in C#, ASP.NET/MVC. Update The problem isn't really with releasing products, I've released quite a few which are up and running with customers happy. It's more with quality of code, best practices, how do I know something I am code is correct, it may work but there may be ways of coding it much more efficiently or by adhering to some kind of standard Cheers for any responses!
