• iPhone SDK: am I still allowed to develop with SDK 3.1.3 on Leopard?

  Mac OS X Snow Leopard's been in stores for a while now. Sadly, the Mac that I'll be developing on is still running Leopard, and I don't have admin access to the Mac either so I can't do anything about the OS version. Therefore I can only use iPhone SDK 3.1.3, which we've obtained thanks to this answer, to start building apps on that Mac. Am I still allowed to develop apps with this setup and deploy for iPhone OS 3.x to the App Store? Keyword is allowed because all I've seen so far are technical questions/answers, but I'm not certain if Apple's going to be a jerk and shun me because I can't use a Snow Leopard Mac despite having only started this year (and I don't even want to get started about iPhone SDK 4's revised agreement, not with its NDA still in place...).

• Circular dependecy in winforms app using Castle Windsor

  Hello, I was experimenting a little bit with Castle winforms in a winforms project. I wanted to register all my form dependencies with Castle windsor. This way I would have a single instance for all my forms. Now I have some problem though. I'm in a situation that form x has a dependency on form y and form y has a dependency on form x. Practical example maybe: form x is used to create an order, form y is the screen that has a list of customers. From form x there is a button to select a customer for the order. This will open form y where ou can search the customer. There is a button that lets you add the found customer to the order. It will call a method on form x and passes the selected customer object. I could do this with events. Raise an event in form y and listen for that in form x. But isn't there a way around the circular dependency in Castle Windsor, lazy registration or something? Can anyone help me out? Thanks in advance

  I'm using a twitter gem which basically accesses twitter and lets me grab tweets, timeline etc. Its really good but I have a lot of my code that uses the stuff it returns and I need to test it. The things the gem returns aren't exactly simple strings, there pretty complex objects (scary as well) so im left scratching my head. So basically I'm looking for an answer, book, blog, open-source project that can show me the rights and wrongs of testing around external services. answers that are either not language centric or ruby/rails centric would most greatly be appreciated.

• Eclipse Search Only Specific Folders

  Hello, I already saw the answers for a question almost identical to this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/443169/eclipse-exclude-folders-from-search. However I am looking for a resolution that would allow me to say look at 10 of my 200 folders and those 10 change all the time. Is there a way I can search through just 1 folder and avoid any other folders that are not inside it? I don't want to create a different project as I am using SVN and I have had cases with mxml files and other files that adding a file that we moved from one project to another caused problems for other developers.

• Will the following code be Garbage Collected before the class "dies"?

  Let's say we have the following code in a class: //class code TextBox t = new TextBox(); ListBox l = new ListBox(); We have then two possible situations: In the first, we declare qem1 as a class variable(or attribute, as they call it in the Java World): //class variable QuickEntryMediator qem1 = new QuickEntryMediator(t,l); In the second, we declare it inside a method: //method variable QuickEntryMediator qem2 = new QuickEntryMediator(t,l); So, I'd say qem1 would never be Garbage Collected before the class goes out of scope while in the qem2 might be Garbage Collected at any time after the method in which it resides dies. Is this true? I am looking for answers for both C#(.net) and Java, as am I am not sure both GC's work in the same fashion! Thanks

  I have created a Money class to save money values in different currencies. The class uses 3 letter ISO symbols to store currency types: public class Money { public decimal Amount { get; set; } public string Currency { get; set; } } Is there a way in C# to use this information, say 100.00 USD, and format it as "$100.00"? Only way I know of requires CultureInfo like this: Amount.ToString("C", CultureInfo.CreateSpecificCulture("en-US")); However this does not work with my Money class. Is there another solution? I am open to changing my Money class. I have searched this site for similar questions (such as this), but couldn't find one that answers the above question.

• Get user-inputed file name from JFileChooser Save dialog box

  This answer to this question may seem obvious, but I'm actually struggling with it quite a bit. I've searched through JFileChooser methods in the API, and I've looked at some of the questions already asked and answered here on stackoverflow. My question is this. In my program, I am to allow the user to type in a file name which I will then use to create a brand new file that I will write on. How do you get the text the user has entered in the textfield next to the label "Save As:" on the Save dialog box provided by JFileChooser? Is there a JFileChooser method that would allow me to get that user-inputed text? Or would I have to go through another class, or do something else to get that text? Thank you so much, to anyone who answers. It's very late for me now, and this program is due in a few hours (meaning I'll be having another sleepless night). Desperate may be too strong a word, but I'm something close enough.

  So my whole problem is that I have two files one with following format(for Python 2.6): #comments config = { #comments 'name': 'hello', 'see?': 'world':'ABC',CLASS=3 } This file has number of sections like this. Second file has format: [23] [config] 'name'='abc' 'see?'= [23] Now the requirement is that I need to compare both files and generate file as: #comments config = { #comments 'name': 'abc', 'see?': 'world':'ABC',CLASS=3 } So the result file will contain the values from the first file, unless the value for same attribute is there in second file, which will overwrite the value.   Dear all, One notion that has been prevalent mostly as rumours for many aspiring programmers is that the testing phase of the SDLC(Software Development Life Cycle) is not that challenging and interesting as one's job as a tester after a period of time becomes monotonous because a person does the same thing repeatedly over and over again. Thats why many have this complexion of looking for a developers job rather than that of testers. Don't testers have a space for themselves in software companies to grow..? Please feel free to express your views for or against this. How true is that, could you please give e.g.'s of instances( need not be practical, even theoretical would suffice) which actually contradict this statement wrt a tester's career specifically wrt the SAP domain. E.g.'s from other domains are also welcome. This question is not meant to hurt someone's feelings who is in the testing domain. Its just that for e.g. in my case I want to know what actually would be the challenge's a tester could also face in real life situations.Something that would make their job also interesting and fun-filled. I myself am pro-testing and also interested in pursuing testing as a profession in a sw co, just curious to know more about it so...:) Thanks..:)

• Map large integer to a phrase

  I have a large and "unique" integer (actually a SHA1 hash). I want (for no other reason than to have fun) to find an algorithm to convert that SHA1 hash to a (pseudo-)English phrase. The conversion should be reversible (i.e., knowing the algorithm, one must be able to convert the phrase back to SHA1 hash.) The possible usage of the generated phrase: the human readable version of Git commit ID, like a motto for a given program version (which is built from that commit). (As I said, this is "for fun". I don't claim that this is very practical — or be much more readable than the SHA1 itself.) A better algorithm would produce shorter, more natural-looking, more unique phrases. The phrase need not make sense. I would even settle for a whole paragraph of nonsense. (Though quality — englishness — of a paragraph should probably be better than for a mere phrase.) A variation: it is OK if I will be able to work only with a part of hash. Say, first six digits is OK. Possible approach: In the past I've attempted to build a probability table (of words), and generate phrases as Markov chains, seeding the generator (picking branches from probability tree), according to the bits I read from the SHA. This was not very successful, the resulting phrases were too long and ugly. I'm not sure if this was a bug, or the general flaw in the algorithm, since I had to abandon it early enough. Now I'm thinking about attempting to solve the problem once again. Any advice on how to approach this? Do you think Markov chain approach can work here? Something else?

• Empty list in appengine datastore: java vs python

  I have the following java model class in AppEngine: public class Xyz ... { @Persistent private Set<Long> uvw; } When saving an object Xyz with an empty set uvw in Java, I get a "null" field (as listed in the appengine datastore viewer). When I try to load the same object in python (through remote_api), as defined by the following python model class: class Xys(db.Model): uvw = db.ListProperty(int) I get a "BadValueError: Property uvw is required". When saving another object of the same class in python with an empty uvw list, the datastore viewer print a "missing" field. Apparently empty lists storage handling differs between Java and python and lead to "incompatible" objects. Thus my question: Is there a way to, either: force Java to store an empty list as a "missing" field, force Python to gracefully accept a "null" list as an empty list when loading the object? Or any other suggestion on how to handle empty list field in both languages. Thanks for your answers!

  I've tried checking other answers, but I'm still confused--especially after seeing W3schools HTML 5 reference. I thought HTML 4.01 was supposed to "allow" single-tags to just be <img> and <br>. Then XHTML came along with <img /> and <br /> (where someone said that the space is there for older browsers). Now I'm wondering how I'm supposed to format my code when practicing HTML 5. <!DOCTYPE HTML> Is it <br>, <br/> or <br />?

• Customized sorting on DataTable in C#?

  This is a C# Winform question. I have a DataGridView which is bounded to a DataTable. I construct the DataTable myself, which several DataColumn instances. When the DataTable is bound to the DataGridView, by default, every column is sortable by clicking the headers of the DataGridView. But the sorting behavior is something "by default". It seems that it is sorted by string. This is true even if I put this as my code: DataColumn dc = new DataColumn("MyObjectColumn", typeof(MyObject)); And MyObject has overriden ToString() and has implemented the IComparable interface. That means even if I have told the DataTable how to sort the special column with the implementation of IComparable interface, DataGridView still doesn't do it the way I expect. So how can I let DataTable sort data in the way I want? Thanks for the answers.

  What are accepted methods to reduce iPhone application piracy, which do not violate Apple's evaluation process? If my application "phones home" to provide the unique device ID on which it runs, what other information would I need to collect (e.g., the Apple ID used to purchase the application) to create a valid registration token that authorizes use of the application? Likewise, what code would I use to access that extra data? What seem to be the best available technical approaches to this problem, at the present time? Of course I could do: <img src='<?php echo $full_path; ?>/images/theImg.jpg' alt='alternative text' /> But somewhere I saw people doing it like this, or something: <img src='{full_path}/images/theImg.jpg' /> Now do you know how the second example is possible, or is it just part of some framework and can't be used in normal document? • ASP/NET MVC: Test Controllers w/Sessions? Mocking?

  I read some of the answers on here re: testing views and controllers, and mocking, but I still can't figure out how to test an ASP.NET MVC controller that reads and sets Session values (or any other context based variables.) How do I provide a (Session) context for my test methods? Is mocking the answer? Anybody have examples? Basically, I'd like to fake a session before I call the controller method and have the controller use that session. Any ideas?

• NFOP performance problem

  We're using NFOP in a project (C#, ASP.NET 2.0) to ultimately return PDF files to the user. The process currently goes like this: Stored Procedure - XML XML - XSLT - XSL-FO XSL-FO - NFOP - PDF This works fine, the PDF is generated BEAUTIFULLY. The problem is that it takes 300+ seconds to do it. The ANTS profiler indicates that the problem is sitting in the driver.run() method inside of NFOP. It's not like this is a gargantuan amount of data, the size of the xsl-fo source going into the nfop driver object is ~980k. What's the most likely source and resolution of this problem? ANY hints or tips or answers are most appreciated, we were supposed to head to VA scan at 11 am. :|

I know that there are some applications (task managers), but I would like to write my own, simple application. I would like to write simple task manager, just list of all process and button which will kill some of them. • Applet in different directory than .html page

  Hello all, I'm trying to use a different directory to contain the applets and other directory with .html pages. Both are in the same level, that is, none is a sub-directory of the other. For that I was trying to use the parameter codebase, however, no matter what I put in codebase value (relative, absolute path) I always get a class not found error. I googled and found some people with the same problem, but no answers:( Does anybody knows how to accomplish this? I'm using JRE 1.6_20. Cheers, Jorge
