• How to change a physical partition system to LVM?

  I have a server with Debian that have 3 physical partitions covering all the disk: boot, root y swap. Now I want to replace that partitions with LVM partitions. I know how install Debian with LVM at beginning, but in this case I can't install the system at beginning because the provider gets me a server with remote access and the system installed in this way. How can I change that partitions using only an ssh connection and possibly other remote server where to put some temporal data?

  I am looking for a free virtual-desktop program that will allow me to put a different virtual desktop on each of my two monitors (one on laptop and the other external) How I would like to use it: I do a lot of work connecting to other servers using remote desktop. I would like to use the external monitor to open remote desktop in full screen and use the laptop monitor for the local machine to view my mails, chat, browser, etc. I am using XP SP3.

• ssh sessions in xterms freeze for many minutes whenever they disconnect

  If I ssh to a remote machine and then lose internet connectivity, the session freezes. I can't control-c or otherwise abort and go back to my local xterm or terminal prompt but if I wait several minutes it will do so. There must be some way to force it to abort the remote ssh session when connectivity is lost. I'm on a Mac but I believe this happens on cygwin or linux as well.

• Problem getting video from DVD

  I have a DVD that a customer needs me to pull ~5 minutes of video from, and convert it to FLV to play on their website. I downloaded AVS Video Converter and tried to use it to convert the VOB file to FLV, with the thought of editing after, and also tried MPEG. Both times it froze up. I then tried to just copy the file from the DVD to my hard drive, thinking that maybe the disc access was slowing things down too much. I got a "Cyclic redundancy" error from Windows while doing that, and it stopped copying. Is the file corrupted? Is there any better way to get it from the DVD player? I only need 5 minutes of 1.5 hours, so if I can avoid converting the entire thing then editing, that would be awesome Thanks for your help

  I connect to a remote machine from the local machine and use virsh console to enter the virtual machine. I don't know how to exactly depict how it works. Normally it works well, but when I run VIM: Then it can't be recovered unless I cut the connection up: It's very hard to work with a broken terminal. Any advice? My terminal works well on my local machine and the remote machine in which the virtual machine runs.

  I've setup TomatoVPN using these settings on the server: TAP UDP 1194 Client address pool 10.10.9.1 -10.10.9.254 LAN clients are configured with 10.10.10.x I can connect from a remote client, but pinging anything in the 10.10.10.x results in a "Destination Host Unreachable" error. It gets all emails from the remote in-box folder but, if one happen to have fallen into the remote spam folder, I never receive it, in outlook! Is there an easy way out for this one ? Thanks!

• Connection to VPN using command line

  I've wrote a simple batch file to connect to a specific VPN connection using RASDIAL rasdial MyVPNConnection but it always returned the error 691 Access denied because username and/or password is invalid on the domain. Remote Access Service (RAS) Error Code List then i tried pointing to my Remote Access Phonebook (Rasphone.pbk) and see what happens rasdial MyVPNConnection /phonebook:%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk\rasphone.pbk and still there was an error 691. I've then unchecked the following but still the same problem was reported when executing my batch file.

• VIM: How do you get the last ex command you used?

  I find that sometimes I write a really long ex mode command that do lots of stuff. They are sort of "mini-scripts" that I write in the text editor then I start ex mode and copy them into the ex line and execute. But then I always end up editing in the ex mode and then I find it difficult to get the changes i did in ex mode back to my text editing session. Using the keyboard, how do you copy the last ex command you used and paste it into your text editor? (Note: This is sort of the opposite of this question "how do I copy/paste in vim ex mode" where the user asks "how do you copy from the text editor and paste INTO the ex mode?". My question is the opposite because I wish to copy from the ex mode and paste into my text editor.)

• When an Excel file is locked on a network share, how does it know who locked the file?

  We are using Excel 2010 and sometimes users are working from a network share. When a user on the network opens the file in Excel, the file is locked for editing - this is the expected behavior. When another user tries to open the file, Excel gives the message [filename] is locked for editing by 'John Doe' The problem is, the user is always this one particular user's name, no matter who actually has the file open. Where does Excel get this info, and how do I fix it? Update: I should have mentioned that in Excel, under Options (General), the correct user names have been set up. That is not where this user name is coming from.

• Program to dump ID3 tag structure

  Is there a program that would dump the complete structure of ID3v2 tags? Not just the frame names and values, but full information such as frame order, text encoding, description encoding (for TXXX frames), presence of unsynchronization, presence of multiple tags... Background: I'm rather curious why some files are incompatible with some programs. For example, some ID3v2.4 tags written by foobar2000 are not read by Winamp; editing with Mutagen fixes them but editing with foobar2000 breaks again. It's not the version or data encoding – most other v2.4 UTF-16 tags work fine... However, if I use foobar2000 to convert the tags to v2.3, then back to v2.4, they start working fine in Winamp – this last bit just does not make any sense. Edit: Linux or/and Windows.

  Recently i installed GRUB2, everything is working fine. When my system is started my monitor is showing something like the following "Minimal BASH-Like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename." Press "Esc" key to enter the menu. Boot windows... and when i press the Esc key it then shows the GRUB2 menu showing list of operating systems installed on my system How the remove "Minimal BASH-Like line editing ...." text. I only need this line Press "Esc" key to enter the menu. Boot windows... Note: Both my WindowsXP and Fedora12 are working fine and loading with no problem.

  There used to be a check-box in preferences in Excel 2003 to disable moving down on Enter key after you edited a cell. Where could I find that setting in Excel 2007? <whining on>It drives me insane how microsoft trashes users skills and "fingers" memory to make what their new users may be will find easier. What about us, using these products for ten years?<whining off> I want to control moving around with arrow keys, and Enter to only return me from the cell editing mode to navigation, not moving down. After editing in Movie Maker, I save the movie. And no matter what option I chose, I always end up with .wmv file, that is either 4:3 image with black stripes above and below the video, or 16:9 with black frame all around the image. What settings should I use, to be able to export or save the video in 1280 x 720 without any black border?

  I am running a dicom receiver on a Centos 6 box on top of a Xen server. If I attempt to send data to it from a remote server I get the following error: storescp: relocation error: /lib/libresolv.so.2: symbol memcpy, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference If I send data to the server locally it works, but sending to it from remote gives the above error. I do not think this is a problem that is specific to the storescp server.

  This is in RHEL 5.5. A reverse lookup on the IP address in my ntp.conf file validates that the ntpq output is correctly naming the remote server. However, as you can see, it appears to just roll over to my .LOCL. time server. Also, ntptrace just returns the local time server, and ntptrace XXX.YYY.4.21 times out. $ ntptrace localhost.localdomain: stratum 6, offset 0.000000, synch distance 0.948181 $ ntptrace XXX.YYY.4.21 XXX.YYY.4.21: timed out, nothing received ***Request timed out This looks like my ntp daemon is just querying itself. I am thinking about the possibility that the router-I-don't-control between my test network timeserver and the corporate network timeserver is blocking on source port. (I think ntpdate sends on port 123, which gets it around that filter and is why I can't use it while ntpd is running.) I have email in to the network folks to check that. Finally, telnet XXX.YYY.4.21 123 never times out or completes a connection. The questions: What am I missing, here? What else can I check to try to figure out where this connection is failing? Would strace ntptrace XXX.YYY.4.21 show me the source port ntptrace is sending from? I can deconstruct most strace calls, but I can't figure out the location of that datum. If I can't directly examine the gateway router between my test network and the timeserver, how might I build evidence that it's responsible for these disconnections? Alternately, how might I rule it out?

• How to stop Word 2011 opening hyperlinks on click?

  In previous versions of MS Word, there was a preference for the action to be taken when the user clicked a hyperlink: open it, or edit it. Word 2011 appears to have defaulted to opening the hyperlink, and I can't find the preference to change this behaviour. How can I change Word's default behaviour when a hyperlink is clicked to be editing the text of the hyperlink? Holding down a modifier key when clicking is not an acceptable solution, as the aim here is to prevent misclicks from causing web pages to open. Edit: the links need to stay as links in the saved document. But when clicked on my machine, they should not open; Word needs to default to just editing the link, so an inaccurate click does not take me out of the document into Safari. Older versions of Word had a preference controlling this, and Microsoft seem to have removed it and fixed the behaviour at the unsafe option in order to satisfy the point-and-drool crowd.

I cd to the directory that I want to pull the files to, then I enter: rsync -vrtW [email protected]:~/public_html I enter the password then it starts running. • How to choose between Mac Laptop and Desktop

  I am looking at getting a Mac soon for both iPhone development, and video editing. Should I be looking at a desktop or MacBook? I do not plan for the machine to move from my desk at home, so portability is not an issue, however it will be next to both a windows 7 desktop as well as a Linux laptop with dock. Main things that I'm concerned about is whether or not a MacBook has the power needed to do the video editing that I'm planning on doing and whether or not I can afford a desktop.
