• Used HDD/ran DiskSmartView/40,000 Power-on-hours?? should i trust it w/ my data, or take it back and bitch?

  I just bought a used hard drive from a University Surplus Store. Decided to run DiskSmartView to make sure it wasn't ready to fail. 40,000 power-on-hours I don't know if I feel like trusting my data to something that used. I really dont know if thats unreasonably old, but when i compare it to the POH reading i get when testing my other hdds its more than 3x older (my others have 2110 hours, 6150 hours, etc.. It's a Western Digital, so that gives me a little bit of hope(WDC WD4000KD-00NAB0). I could sure use someone else's opinion here. Thanks, DAVE

• Full Screen Flash is choppy (nVidia GeForce 8200M)

  I have a new compaq presario laptop (I asked SU for advice before I bought it :-) ). It has a nVidia GeForce 8200M video card. When I try to play a flash video full screen, it plays really choppy. This is a brand new computer and is well more powerful than my previous computer so I know it's not a matter of the full screen being too processor intensive to play, or a bandwidth problem. Even playing HD hulu videos full screen was fine on my previous laptop. Any advice on how to get better performance here? edit: World Of Warcraft is able to play at a great framerate, so this machine should definitely be able to handle a simple little flash video ;-)

• Question about Remote WAN IP on NetGear FVS336G VPN setup

  I wanted to be able to have a VPN connection to my home network so I purchased the FVS336G because the reviews said it was easy set up. I am sure it is for someone that knows what needs to be entered it is easy, but I am a little confused. Using the VPN wizard I choose VPN Client as the tunnel connection, enter key, etc... but then I get to the "What is the remote WAN's IP or Internet Name" and "What is the local WAN's IP address or Internet Name" I am lost. I am probably being really dumb, but I am not sure what I need to put in here. Is the remote WAN ip the ip from the outside world to my cable modem? Is the local ip the ip to my FVS336G? Any help would be appreciated.

• ffmpeg, vlc - Unable to find input stream

  Good day to all... I have some "little" problems with ffserver and ffmpeg... What I need to do is to broadcast a live video. So I got the cam... used vlc and used send stream option. I sent it to 192.168.1.9:64555, which is a virtual machine on the same computer, running centos. On the virtual machine I run the command ffmpeg -i 192.168.1.9:64555 output.mpg.   Assuming the data is the same either way, does the maximum length of the VARCHAR affect the space usage of a secondary index? Does InnoDB use fixed length records for indexes? Assume that we're talking about MySQL 5.1, with the InnoDB COMPRESSED table format and that the field in question is defined as a VARCHAR with some length less than or equal to 255 (so that it uses only one byte for the offset). Here is the use case: I have a server with a very large table (several gigabytes). One of the fields is currently VARCHAR(7). We need it a little longer and we are thinking of making it VARCHAR(255), but we are worried that it bloat the index.

• How do you recommend installing Linux on a computer that has no external drive or ability to boot fr

  I have an old Toshiba Portege 3505 "ultralight" laptop, meaning it doesn't have any kind of disk drive on it at all, that I'd like to completely reformat and install Linux on. However, it won't boot from any drive (and I don't have any on hand), so I'll have to install it from a USB drive (which I doubt it boots from either). (I'm not sure how to change the settings in my BIOS to get my computer to boot from a USB stick. Any ideas for this?) How do you recommend I do this? I want to note that I don't want to run Linux off a LiveUSB, I want to actually install it on the machine. I was thinking about Damn Small Linux, it's tiny and all I need. Any advice or suggestions for something else though? Finally, I'm a total newbie to this, I've never installed Linux on anything before so I might be a little slow on some stuff! Thanks!

• SQL CLR not properly enabling

  We have a SQL server running SQL 2005 Workgroup 64 bit (9.0.4273), on Windows 2003 server 64 bit. We have run sp_configure and reconfigured the server which indicates that the clr is now enabled. exec sp_configure 'clr enabled', '1' go reconfigure go However, when trying to call CREATE ASSEMBLY the server completely dies on us and we have to do a full reboot of the machine. A little more diagnostic information, even though clr enabled is set to 1 and we have rebooted the full server, running the following statement select * from sys.dm_clr_properties returns directory version state locked CLR version with mscoree which is what it says when the CLR is not enabled on another machine. On a correctly enabled machine (after reboot) this function reads directory C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\ version v2.0.50727 state CLR is initialized

• gVIM "put" driving me mad, how do I "put" at the beginning of a line

  I'm learning gVIM on Windows, and as I slowly learn more of the keystrokes I find myself using the mouse less and less, which is great. I have a couple of questions I've yet to figure out: I do a lot of copy and paste. So I use 'v' to enter VISUAL mode, use k/j to move up/down and select the lines, then hit 'y' to yank. I then go to the line where I want to insert, and hit 'p' to put, BUT the darn thing pastes after the 1st character. I can't move any further left, so I am definitely at the start of the line, so I find the 'p'ut behaviour of pasting 1 char after my cursor position to be supremely annoying. I switch between edit and command mode an awful lot, and my poor little finger on my left hand is getting sore from being stretched out to hit the 'Esc' key (to enter command mode) every few seconds. Is there a more finger-friendly way to enter command mode?

• Setting up Samba shares on a Linux VPS

  Hi, I'm trying to set up a folder that can be accessed via Windows clients over the net on my Linux VPS on which our companies website resides. I know a little bit about Linux, and have used Samba before to browse Windows shares from a Linux laptop. I'm guessing it's possible to do the reverse - to share a folder from Linux TO a Windows client. I have root SSH access to the VPS, would anyknow know what steps I need to take to set up the share, and how I can secure it, ideally with a simple username/password so the Windows clients can connect easily? • HP ML115 with P400 Smart Array Controller

  Hi, I have a HP ML115 server I have installed a HP P400 Smart Array Controller card, I also have 4 x 1TB Samsung Hard drives. I'm unable to get the the controller to detect the hard drives, I have changed the drives to SATA 1.5G without luck, I have also tried connecting a single 80GB Maxtor drive without luck The controller shows up just after boot and tries to initialize, The controller does not show up in the POST prompt, although I can see the controller when booting off a ACU CD THe controller firmware is a little old v4.12 but I have no way to update it. Any ideas on how I can get this going?

• Resize underlying partitions in mdadm RAID1

  I have a home built NAS, and I need to slightly reconfigure some of my drive usage. I have an mdadm RAID1 composed of two 3TB drives. Each drive has one ext3 partition that uses the entire drive. I need to shrink the ext3 partition on both drives, and add a second 8GB or so ext3 partition to one, and swap partition of equal size to the other. I think I have the steps figured out, but wanted some confirmation. Resize the mdadm RAID resize2fs /dev/md0 [size] where size is a little larger than the currently used space on the drive Remove one of the drives from the RAID mdadm /dev/md0 --fail /dev/sda1 Resize the removed drive with parted Add the new partition to the drive with parted Restore the drive to the RAID mdadm -a /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 Repeat 2-5 for the other device Resize the RAID to use the full partition mdadm --grow /dev/md0 -z max Is there anything I've missed, or haven't considered?

  When you take clips and turn them into computer playable files, whether .TS or .MOV or .MPG, .MP4, .VOB, etc., do you as the producer actually manually write into some field in a "Details" section of your video editor what the video length is, so that it can be read by the eventual user's video player? Or is this activity performed automatically by the video editor? I'm asking because: when a mouse is passed over a file line item in Windows 7 Shell (Windows Explorer) a little box is displayed where the mouse meets the file line item and provides simple name and size properties, one of which (if it's a media file) is run length. How does that figure get there into the file (later to be read be Windows or OS X)? Thanks for any info.

  Okay, I've been thinking about this a lot recently but I think I may be more confused now than I was originally when I started. I can't find anything about Openflow that helps me understand what it is. None of the websites I have found have given a solid definition of what Openflow really is and what it does, at least if they do I can't comprehend it. Is there an easy way to explain this standard so my small brain can understand it? I understand that Openflow is a way to abstract networking away from switches and can be managed from software, etc etc. I feel like it might be a little easier to grasp if I had exmaples of application. But so far searching has failed me. What is Openflow? How can it help me? What does it offer?

  I'm in the midst of building a computer (this is my first time). When I first put the heatsink on the CPU, I was a little off center. Some of the thermal compound came off, so when I re-centered it, it isn't completely evenly distributed. So here's my question: how picky are CPUs in terms of how evenly the thermal compound is? Should I take it apart, clean it, and apply a new layer of compound? Or can I just keep an eye on the CPU temperature? (I'm not overclocking or anything, if that matters)

• How to enable extended logging for classic asp on IIS7 on Windows 2008 R2

  I had to deploy an application that was not written by me onto the above configuration. It is a rather bizarre hybrid of asp.net and classic asp and it's the classic asp that is proving troublesome. The client is having problems with 500 Internal Server Errors appearing and I can see some of these in the logs but I only get the error code and the page name but little else. What I would like to see is the actual error message to at least give me an idea what is going on (or not going on, depending on your point of view) I don't want to display errors in the browser as I don't know the code well enough and this could (for all I know) display some crazy code where the db password is hard-coded into the site.

• Wi-Fi performance in Windows 8 RP on a MacBook Air (mid 2011)

  I was able to install the Boot Camp Windows software using the executable that it provided, and there are no unrecognized or unknown devices in Device Manager. Wi-Fi works but it seems to be limited to an extremely slow 1.5Mbits. Network Center reports an 802.11n connection (at 65Mbps usually) but transfers never reach above about 200kB/s. Being limited to 1/20th of the connection speed of my internet service is quite frustrating. Does anybody experience the same issue? I have been trying to identify the Broadcom Wi-Fi chipset and a driver that I could try to upgrade to but I have made very little progress on Google on this front.

• Terse, documented, correct way to create Kerberos-backed user shares in Greyhole

  As a migration strategy away from Windows Home Server (which is currently out of support and intractable for our needs, for a variety of reasons), our little cloister of nerds has targeted Greyhole for our shared use at home. Despite the documentation's terseness, getting the system set up for simple, single-user operation isn't especially difficult, but this scenario fails to service our needs. Among other highlights of the system, we're attempting to emulate Integrated Windows Authentication (with Kerberos) and single-user shares to keep the Windows users in the house happy and well-supported. I'm aware of the underlying systems that go into Greyhole and understand how to set up per-user shares in Samba, but the documentation doesn't seem to support cases for Greyhole to sop up these directories as separate landing zones for replication. Enter my question: are both of these cases (IWA user authentication and user-partitioned personal shares) supported by Greyhole? If so, please cite or link the supporting documentation if it exists.

• vector quality of svg and pdf

  I'm converting pdf files to svg as it is easier to use svg files on webpages. I first thought the quality of svg must be similar to pdf, as they are both vector graphics. However, now I look a little better on it, it seems that pdf is a bit superior: (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/58922976/Photos/1.png) I wonder if I could change this in some way. Is this because pdf vectors are just better quality ? Or is this because chrome renders svg in lower quality than adobe reader renders pdf ? Is this a setting in the svg file that I could change ? I have little script that run when user login to the computer and writes the file with computer name. I have 39 computers and only on 23 computers the script was run. • Restore Default OSX Home Folder Icons

  I want to keep folders such as Pictures and Documents in my home folder in sync between computers; at the moment, I'm using Dropbox to do this. On Computer A I added a symlink to the folders in my home directory to the Dropbox folder. On Computer B I deleted the existing Pictures and Documents folders and replaced them with symlinks to the folders in the Dropbox folder. This works very well, except that in Finder I don't see the nice little icons that Lion has by default for folders of a particular kind. Is there any way to restore these?

• What's an easy way to install a bunch of OSS apps in my home dir on my company's aging Redhat VNC servers?

  My company's IT group doesn't want to install lots of common stuff on our VNC servers, which run RHEL 4. The list of stuff i want/need includes graphviz, midnight commander, various python libs, sqlite, netbeans, antlr, jdk1.6, etc. They've hobbled rpm somehow, so i can't do rpm --relocate. And i don't want the RHEL4 compatible revs of this stuff anyway. I've probably got the room to build all this stuff in my home dir, but i don't want to take forever tracking down dependencies. Looking for an easy way to get the apps/tools i need, and nothing (or very little) else. Any suggestions?

  Maybe a little more of the same questions that others have asked but wanted to clarify my doubt, for some years run my hosting company (reseller of esds) and I've done well so far, but I am determined to bring quality and server technology to offer another level. So far I have understood that there is a difference between cloud and cluster servers because the cluster function as load balancers that distribute in different servers roles and use the servers less overloaded in the cloud is the union of multiple servers and then the same is vitualized unlike the cluster that is allowed to use the resources of the CPU and RAM servers in the virtualized environment. My approach is to use 3 dedicated servers to create a cloud server, My doubts: Does this type of cloud servers are only reserved for big companies? (Either because the union of the servers is done by hardware or software with high price) What characteristics should these servers meet? Possibly through software which should be used? Available?   I'm in the process of creating a script to run the command line version of Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (mbsacli.exe) against all of our servers. Since the MBSA reports are provided as XML documents, I should be able to write a script or small program to parse the XML looking for errors / issues. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether or not the XML schema for the MBSA reports is documented anywhere -- I have goggled this, and cant seem to find any trace of it. I've run across a few articles that address bits and pieces, but nothing that addresses the complete schema. Yes, I could just reverse engineer the XML, but I would like to understand a little more about the meaning of some of the tags. Thanks...

  I want to see a listing of all the stored procs for each database on a server along with when the last time that store proc was run. I'm pretty good with SQL but I don't know about looking at stats like this that sql keeps so I'd appreciate a little help finding this info. • Debian Simple Gui for adding/removing users for protective directories

  We have a hosted site with a directory that is password protected. I need to have a user who knows very little about computers, maintain the users that have access to this directory. The list is going to get big, according to our customer database. My question is 2 fold: Is there a simple gui program that I can have this user utilize to be able to maintain the users without having to teach them how to use ssh and UNIX? Am I going about this the right way? Is there a better way to do this? Thanks for your help!
