    How do I disable automatic hyphen correction in OS X 10.7? When using the spell checker in Apple Mail it is always prompting to correct my hyphens to another one which is essentially similar but microns longer on the screen for some reason. It's annoying as I often use hyphens and really need spell check too. Thoughts? I looked in all the usual System Preferences places but can't find anything.

  • Which framework would you recommend to use to add "social networking" components to a website?

    Given which already enables users to create and publish content, is there a service or tool which can add the standard social networking suite of components? Specifically, I'm looking quickly add functionality which allows users to friend each other, vote on/like/rank content on the site, send each other links to parts they find interesting, chat and send offline message each other. There's no specific limitation on the technology used for these components - as long as its been proven to work, and scales without issue. I'd slightly prefer a solution which is offered as a service rather than one that I have to install. Edit Some additional commenter requested clarifications - there are no restrictions that the site imposes on user identification or authentication. Feel free to assume that portion of the work is not relevant to the answers.

    I want to AJAX enable all of my Add To Cart buttons because search engine bots are indexing these and not paying attention to my robots file or site map. I just don't want to loose potential customers. I have seen a number of top sites using heavily JavaScript support content, including Amazon, is it OK to follow the trend? The rest of my site progressively degrades, but I would really like to implement this because of the benefits to the customer (instant satisfaction), my infrastructure (constant page rebuilds), and allowing me to use SEO tools to optimize without the tool picking up thousands of "Add to Cart" widgets in my catalog.   • Is there any way to disable write-access to source code from within Xcode?

    Is there any easy solution to prevent Xcode from writing to source files in a project? I want to edit source files externally and only use Xcode for debugging and so I want to prevent any accidental modifications getting saved via xcode. (Obviously I want Xcode to pickup external changes to files when I build/debug) One possible solution that I thought of was to enable app sandbox entitlements on xcode and manually maintain a list of directories that it should not write to. Is this feasible? Any other ideas? On the sandboxing thing, I'm not sure if Xcode is disqualified as per Apple's Sandboxing Requirements.

    I'm trying to configure a VPN tunnel between an Android device running 4.1 and a Fedora 17 Linux box running strongSwan 5.0. The device reports that it is connected and strongSwan statusall returns that there is an IKE SA, but doesn't display a tunnel. I used the instructions for iOS in the wiki to generate certificates and configure strongSwan. Since Android uses a modified version of racoon this should work and since the connection is partly established I think I am on the right track. I don't see any errors about not being able to create the tunnel.     What is the most concise (yet descriptive) way of naming a subclass that only add a specific minor thing to the parent? I encountered this case a lot in WPF, where sometime I have to add a small functionality to an out-of-the-box control for specific cases. Example: TreeView doesn't change the SelectedItem on right-click, but I have to make one that does in my application. Some possible names are TreeViewThatChangesSelectedItemOnRightClick (way too wordy and maybe difficult to read because there is so many words concantenated together) TreeView_SelectedItemChangesOnRightClick (slightly more readable, but still too wordy and the underscore also breaks the normal convention for class names) TreeViewThatChangesSIOnRC (non-obvious acronym), ExtendedTreeView (more concise, but doesn't describe what it is doing. Besides, I already found a class called this in the library, that I don't want to use/modify in my application). LouisTreeView, MyTreeView, etc. (doesn't describe what it is doing). It seems that I can't find a name which sounds right. What do you do in situation like this?

I don't want to download packages from Ubuntu customization kit (UCK) or similar software. I don't prefer using APTonCD or similar software. What I want is to add these software into this Kubuntu 12.10, so that they appear along with the default application which will be installed as default when the OS is installed. Is this possible?

  • How to disable the alt-hotkey behavior on gnome terminal?

    This is not just gnome terminal, but pretty much all gnome windows: When you hold the "alt" key, you can press the first letter of one of the menu items. This will let you scroll that menu without clicking on it directly. This is okay on any other window, like say Firefox, but on gnome terminal, it steals the keys I use for emacs!! There is very little chance of me learning a new set key combinations if I can avoid. If I can't isolate this just to gnome terminal, I'm fine with that.

  • How can I add a bash script to the Unity launcher?

    I open my favourite IDE (PhpStorm) using a custom bash script. I would like to add the script to the Unity launcher. I thought I could add it by clicking the "keep in launcher" option, and sure enough, the icon stays on the launcher after I close the app. But clicking the icon doesn't reopen the IDE - the launcher just sits there, flashing. When I relogin in, the launcher icon is gone. Anyone got any ideas how I can make this work?

After research I find that there is a great market for '2nd hand stuff' and I'd like to serve that market. Would it be best to add '2nd hand stuff' as an additional category of gifts in my existing site....or, since the 2nd hand stuff is a market in itself, would I be better off investing time and energy bringing up a whole new site (www.used-stuff.com)? If I had employees and financial resources, it probably would be a no-brainer...start a new site. But, what if you are a small guy, with limited resources? So...new site....or add to existing site?

    I would like to remove gnome panel completely. I spend most of my time in a (tmux) terminal or a browser. Synapse and a small hidden AWN panel fit the rest of my needs. I have tried all recommended solutions including this (found it a few places): How to delete Gnome Panel? However it always comes back at log in. I have tried changing the required components panel to avant-whatever as well as to empty. I have tried setting them both as default (right click set as default). Right now I just have the last panel set to transparent and auto hide, but it still tends to be annoying. What do I need to do to get rid of this damn thing? Clarification: Using gconf-editor, gconftool2, and/or Ubuntu tweak to set /desktop/gnome/session/required_component/panel to avant-window-navigator is not working. The setting stays when I reboot, but the empty gnome panel sticks around.

  • Which is the most practical way to add functionality to this piece of code?

    I'm writing an open source library which handles hexagonal grids. It mainly revolves around the HexagonalGrid and the Hexagon class. There is a HexagonalGridBuilder class which builds the grid which contains Hexagon objects. What I'm trying to achieve is to enable the user to add arbitrary data to each Hexagon. The interface looks like this: public interface Hexagon extends Serializable { // ... other methods not important in this context <T> void setSatelliteData(T data); <T> T getSatelliteData(); } So far so good. I'm writing another class however named HexagonalGridCalculator which adds some fancy pieces of computation to the library like calculating the shortest path between two Hexagons or calculating the line of sight around a Hexagon. My problem is that for those I need the user to supply some data for the Hexagon objects like the cost of passing through a Hexagon, or a boolean flag indicating whether the object is transparent/passable or not. My question is how should I implement this? My first idea was to write an interface like this: public interface HexagonData { void setTransparent(boolean isTransparent); void setPassable(boolean isPassable); void setPassageCost(int cost); } and make the user implement it but then it came to my mind that if I add any other functionality later all code will break for those who are using the old interface. So my next idea is to add annotations like @PassageCost, @IsTransparent and @IsPassable which can be added to fields and when I'm doing the computation I can look for the annotations in the satelliteData supplied by the user. This looks flexible enough if I take into account the possibility of later changes but it uses reflection. I have no benchmark of the costs of using annotations so I'm a bit in the dark here. I think that in 90-95% of the cases the efficiency is not important since most users wont't use a grid where this is significant but I can imagine someone trying to create a grid with a size of 5.000.000.000 X 5.000.000.000. So which path should I start walking on? Or are there some better alternatives? Note: These ideas are not implemented yet so I did not pay too much attention to good names.

  • How can I delay dropbox from starting, but not disable it?

    When I log into my user account on Ubuntu 10.10, there is a unsatisfying delay before my system becomes usable. Even launching a terminal, I have to wait a few seconds before the bash prompt appears. During this start-up period, the top process seems to be dropbox. I'm not sure what it's doing exactly (functionality is still fine as far as I can see), but I do know it really doesn't need to be doing it while I'm waiting for desktop to appear. (This is the standard Ubuntu with Gnome desktop, by the way.) What I would like to do is to be able to have a static or even dependency-based delay for dropbox to start. It would be nice if it waited for, e.g., 10 minutes, or for my browser tabs to load and a typing pause. Then it could churn away on file status or cache-chewing, and I would be happy. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

    Is it possible to add a custom link group to update-alternatives that is not already there by default? For example, I want to add Scala and all its supporting binaries as a link group 'scala'. I'm trying using this script, but keep getting the error: update-alternatives: error: unknown argument `' I'm not sure what that means, but after troubleshooting the script a bit with no luck, I'm wondering if update-alternatives has a hard-coded list of link groups, that can't be added to, and that doesn't include scala.     I wonder why java.util.ArrayList allows to add null. Is there any case where I would want to add null to an ArrayList? I am asking this question because in a project we had a bug where some code was adding nulls to the List and it was hard to spot where the bug was. Obviously a NullPointerException was thrown but not until another code tried to access the element. The problem was how to locate the code that added the null object. It would have been easier if the ArrayList throwed an exception in the code where the elements was being added.

    There are lots of posts on this about Unity, this is about gnome-shell As with other posters, I use apps (Inkscape in particular) that uses Alt-Click and Alt-drag. Gnome-shell is grabbing this off me and thus disabling features in the application. I have tried using ccsm's Move plugin - you can turn this off and you still get Alt-drag window moving. using gconf editor to change /apps/metacity/general/mouse_button_modifier - this has no effect AFAICS. It's really hindering me. Otherwise I find gnome-shell a really productive environment.

  • Alt-Tab in 12.04 requires pressing Enter to select app, can I disable that?

    Alt+Tab quickly opens the switcher for me, but tabbing over to the next app and releasing the keys will just leave it selected, not switch to it. I have to press Enter to actually switch to the app. How do I make it automatically switch when I release like every other switcher out there? Same behavior occurs when using Super+Tab with either the Compiz Ring Switcher or Shift Switcher. This seems different from the 11.10 behavior.

  • How to disable an "always there" program if it isn't in the processes list?

    I have Crashplan and it is constantly running in the background and making backups every 15 minutes. It caused some problems with the backup target folders, so I want it to be inactive while I am making changes to these folders. I started the application itself, but could not find some kind of "Pause" button. So I decided to just stop its process. I first tried the lazy way - the system monitor in the Gnome panel has a "Processes" tab - but didn't find it listed there. Then I did a sudo ps -A and read through the whole list. I don't recognize everything on the list (many process names are self-explaining, like evolution-alarm, but I don't recognize others like phy0) but there was nothing which sounded even remotely like crashplan. But I know that there must have been a process belonging to Crashplan running at this time, because the main Crashplan window was open when I ran the command. Do you have any advice how to stop this thing from running? The best solution would involve temporary preventing it from loading on boot too, since I may need to reboot while doing the maintenance there.
