    Dell PowerEdge 1600SC Server won't boot from Fedora 12 DVD in the drive because it only supports CDs as I found out after the fact. I'm a complete novice @ servers, so if you need more detail, let me know, and I'll try to provide it. This server is around 4-6 years old. it has "PXE" boot, not sure what that means? This particular server has 3 RAID hard drives. As far as I know, they have all been wiped. I looked up the service tag on Dell, and it has: Compact Disk Drive, 650M, I Internal, Half Height, 48X, BlackHitachi LG Data Storage as its CD drive. Thus, the CD drive does not support DVDs, so installation will have to be via a live CD. However, I'm trying to put Amahi Home Server (http://www.amahi.org/), and Live CD/USB stick installs are not recommended unless one is an expert Linux user. any suggestions as to how to get around this?   • Any way to move Office Starter To-Go to a non-flash drive?

    Microsoft's Office Starter edition has an interesting option to create a portable version on a USB flash drive using the "Microsoft Office Starter To-Go Device Manager". This creates a portable version of the Word and Excel starter editions (limited versions of the normal applications that include ads). This would be great for use in Virtual Machines since it requires no registration and has a perpetual license. But I want to copy the files off of the flash drive and just store them in the VHD. The problem is that it appears when you try to run the office.exe executable from anywhere but the USB drive you get the error "Microsoft Office Starter To-Go cannot be launched because it is installed on an unsupported device." Any ideas what it is objecting to and is there a legal workaround for this? A limited but legal and portable version of Word and Excel is a great idea. But tying it specifically to a USB flash drive seems a bit odd. They don't seem to care how many of those flash drives you create so it's not clear what the restrictions are about.

  • NTBackup (on WS2k3) fails to backup remote server (WS2k8R2) with " Error: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access."

    We run an NTBackup job on a Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 with all updates (as of Q4-2011). It works well backing up two WS2k3 servers as well as the backup server itself. However, we have been unable to successfully back up our Windows Server 2008 R2 machine ("G5-01"). It often runs for about 2GB worth of backup and then dies out with one of the below error messages. It should be more like 20GB for the full server. We have tried using the admin share (C$), an explicitly shared drive share, UNC and mapped drives. The result is the same each time, the only thing that varies is the amount of stuff backed up before it chokes. We've also run NTBbackup from the UI interface, from the command line and as a scheduled task. We are backing up to 400/800GB tapes and they have plenty of space available on them (blank media). Error: \\G5-01\c is not a valid drive, or you do not have access. Error: \\G5-01\c$ is not a valid drive, or you do not have access. Error: Y: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access. Error: Could not access or create backup catalog files. Verify that you have full access to the working folder and there is disk space available. The job is run as Administrator and we have no problems logging onto the server and transferring files. The Event Log on the WS2k8 is not much help, as it has success audits for each login. All of the hardware involved (HP DL360 G3, HP LTO Ultrium 3, Adaptec 39320A) has the latest supported drivers. We've seemingly tried a bunch of different options but are wondering where to look next to resolve the backup issue. We've been super happy with our reliable schedule task for years but this one is stumping us!

After the upgrade, if I try to use the Cisco VPN client to connect to a network, I get this message: Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client. Reason 440: Driver Failure. Prior to the upgrade, I was able to connect with no problems. The version of the client I am using is 5.0.05.0290.

  • Software Raid 10 corrupted superblock after dual disk failure, how do I recover it?

    I have a software raid 10 with 6 x 2tb hard drives (raid 1 for /boot), ubuntu 10.04 is the os. I had a raid controller failure that put 2 drives out of sync, crashed the system and initially the os didnt boot up and went into initramfs instead, saying that drives were busy but I eventually managed to bring the raid up by stopping and assembling the drives. The os booted up and said that there were filesystem errors, I chose to ignore because it would remount the fs in read-only mode if there was a problem. Everything seemed to be working fine and the 2 drives started to rebuild, I was sure that it was a sata controller failure because I had dma errors in my log files. The os crashed soon after that with ext errors. Now its not bringing up the raid, it says that there is no superblock on /dev/sda2, even if I assemble manually with all the device names. I also did a memtest and changed the motherboard in addition to everything else.     I've tried to install Ubuntu on a VMWare Virtual Machine, but it never get's past the bootloader : ISOLINUX 4.01 debian-20100714 ETCD Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! boot: _ I've also tried to burn this .iso image to a CD and go from there - but I got the same problems also ... Some more details : VMWare Server 2.0.2 Build 203138 on Windows 2008 R2 ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso image used (downloaded yesterday evening) I have no clue, why this is not booting !!! Peter Anvin et al No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! boot: _ I've also tried to burn this .iso image to a CD and go from there - but I got the same problems also ... Some more details : VMWare Server 2.0.2 Build 203138 on Windows 2008 R2 ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso image used (downloaded yesterday evening) I have no clue, why this is not booting !!!     Hi all! I have an Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive, 1TB, and lately I can't access the data on the drive. The shares (both built-in and created by me) are there, the security works, but when trying to access the data I get a "The network path was not found" message which is worrying, to say the least. I'd like to know if there is a way to get the data off the disks somehow, as some of the data in the drive (ie, pictures and videos of my 1.5 yrs old son) is hard if not impossible to find otherwise.   • How do you recommend installing Linux on a computer that has no external drive or ability to boot fr

    I have an old Toshiba Portege 3505 "ultralight" laptop, meaning it doesn't have any kind of disk drive on it at all, that I'd like to completely reformat and install Linux on. However, it won't boot from any drive (and I don't have any on hand), so I'll have to install it from a USB drive (which I doubt it boots from either). (I'm not sure how to change the settings in my BIOS to get my computer to boot from a USB stick. Any ideas for this?) How do you recommend I do this? I want to note that I don't want to run Linux off a LiveUSB, I want to actually install it on the machine. I was thinking about Damn Small Linux, it's tiny and all I need. Any advice or suggestions for something else though? Finally, I'm a total newbie to this, I've never installed Linux on anything before so I might be a little slow on some stuff! Thanks!

    Each time I try to save a file, I get a message from my computer (with Windows 7) that asks me to free up some space in my Drive C before being able to save my intended file. But the more I search for extraneous files to delete, the more I get frustrated. I simply can't find out what "extra" file(s) I have that are occupying about 20 gigs of my C drive. As far as I know I save all the downloadable stuff to my other drives, and the most part of what I do with my computer is just Internet browsing. Would you please help me find the file or files that have occupied so much space in my Drive C so that I can remove them?

    All partitions are NTFS. The system is Windows 7 Pro. It does not belong to a domain. I do use shared folders occasionally (both via the Homegroup and old school sharing). Should I set the owner to be Administrators or SYSTEM for a A) fixed drive? B) removable drive? C) Is it ok to make every object on the drive inherit the new ownership? I just realized that I had some messy settings because I turned UAC on for the first time in years and I am now getting some undesirable prompts. I already have permissions set properly and I am only concerned with ownership.

    Last year I got a new Western Digital WD Blue 500GB HDD to replace my old drive. The first thing I did was to install latest Windows 8. While installing Windows 8 I created 3 partitions, C drive for the OS and others for storage. The OS partition is 120GB (which at the time I thought would be plenty big) but I'm now realizing its too small! I wonder if it's possible to re-size HDD partition without reformatting and re-install my Windows 8. So that is my question, Can i enlarge os c drive of my windows 8 without having to re-format? I've used the Norton Partition Magic and Disk Management to make this happen but there doesn't seem to be any options to make it happen. Thanks for any help you guys can give regarding my question.   • Is it common to have portable hard drive not recognize?

    I have a bad hard drive which could not be recognized by windows. If windows can recognize it, it could just be pure luck. There are better chance of it being recognize by plugging it at the usb back of the machine, rather than the front one. More interestingly, I have a usb cable which fork itself at one side ( i.e it has 2 heads at one side ). I can plug both heads to the machine and connect the portable hard drive on the other end of the usb cable? Can I get more voltage by doing this? I am guessing the front usb port doesn't have enough power. I am wondering if I buy a new portable usb hard drive, would it have easy read by plugging at the front usb port? I am not sure if I screw up the jumper connecting the front usb ports, but it is okay for other device such as usb stick and mouse.

  • Gparted can't create partition table

    Here's what the problem is. About a day or so ago I used Gparted live cd to create 3 NTFS primary partitions on my external 500 gig Goflex and one extended with 2 logical partitiones. I had planned to install windows 8 on the first partition, then ubuntu and kubuntu on the other 2. After I finished partitioning my drive with gparted, I booted into windows vista to make my bootable windows 8 usb to install it with, I also decided to check to make sure all my partitions were working properly. Then I found they were, and they weren't. My 50 gig first partition I had planned to install windows on showed up normal and the 300 gigs of space left in the extended partition did as well, the rest showed up as raw. So I figured alright, something went awal while making the partitions, so I booted up gparted once again. Then to my surprise gparted showed the entire drive as unallocated, and when I refreshed the list, it showed as all the partitions I had made earlier, buy with a exclamation mark by them all. So I figured ok, might be a problem with the partition table as I'd seen a similar problem in past on a drive that was not partitioned at all, so I decided to create a new partition table and take the time out again to sit and wait. Then I got a message saying gparted could not create the partition table, followed by it showing the entire drive as formatted into ntfs. After that I figured ok I'll take a break, come back in a hour, maybe it's something I did. So a hour later I came back after having booted up windows, plugged the drive in to see if by some miracle windows could access the drive. In disk management when I plugged the drive in, it would freeze attempting to read the drive, as I'd seen in the past with raw disks, yet when I unplugged it I got a glimpse of disk management showing it as a perfectly fine ntfs file system on the drive followed by a "you must format disk K in order to use it". So I then was assured the disk was raw as that is what had happened in the past, followed by a new partition table through gparted to fix the problem and a 10 hour format in windows. So I once again booted up gparted, to get the message "error fsyncing/closing/dev/sdg:input/output error" followed by "error opening dev/sdg No such file in directory" after I refreshed and somehow saw the disk show up as perfectly fine ntfs and then tried to create a new partition table to try to wipe out all my problems and start over again. And not gparted only shows the drive there about 1/10 refreshes the rest I get the directory error. If anybody can assist me in any way shape or form I will be thankful.

  • Connecting a network drive only when the VPN is connected?

    I have a thumb drive that I want to be able to connect to the same place over the network at one location as it is locally. Sometimes I leave it at the other location, but usually if I'm going to back it up, I back it up locally for network traffic. Is there a way to automatically connect the thumb drive when I connect to the VPN? (Always to the same drive letter...and obviously skip connecting it if it's already plugged in locally and the VPN is connected...) I'm using a Cisco VPN Client 5.x

  • How to work around a possible XNA Game Studio or Windows Phone SDK install failure on Windows 8

    I am not sure if you guys know Aaron Stebner. Aaron works at Microsoft, and has pulled thorns from my side many many times already. His blog is at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner and it is a gold mine of tips and tricks to debug and solve many cryptic issues happening during installation and removal of programs. For example, Aaron taught me how to remove programs that do not appear in the Programs and Features list, amongst many other things. The last nugget I used from Aaron’s blog saved my butt just before a presentation where I had to run both Visual Studio 10 with the Windows Phone SDK, and Visual Studio 11 for WinRT development. Of course this had to be on Windows 8. Unfortunately when you install the Windows Phone SDK on Windows 8, you may (or may not, I saw both scenarios) encounter an issue with XNA, and the installation fails. Unfortunately, even if you don’t use XNA in your apps, this will prevent even normal Windows Phone app development. Fortunately, Aaron has a fix for that.   • Can i enlarge os c drive of my windows 8? [migrated]

    Last year I got a new Western Digital WD Blue 500GB HDD to replace my old drive. The first thing I did was to install latest Windows 8. While installing Windows 8 I created 3 partitions, C drive for the OS and others for storage. The OS partition is 120GB (which at the time I thought would be plenty big) but I'm now realizing its too small! I wonder if it's possible to re-size HDD partition without reformatting and re-install my Windows 8. So that is my question, Can i enlarge os c drive of my windows 8 without having to re-format? I've used the Norton Partition Magic and Disk Management to make this happen but there doesn't seem to be any options to make it happen. Thanks for any help you guys can give regarding my question. I've worked hard to optimize my current install of Windows 8 and would hate to start all over again.

  • How can I tell a fresh ubuntu 9.0.4 install to boot from an external Mac OS X usb drive?

    I have a reformatted Mac mini containing only a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.0.4. The Apple boot loader as been removed, so I can't hold down option, or the c key to get it to reboot form the install DVD. I do have an external drive (with both a usb and firewire interface available) with a bootable cloned OS X system on it. What steps do I need to go through to in order get grub to see the external drive, and to boot from it so that I can reformat the internal disk as an OS X drive?

  • Are there any actual case studies on rewrites of software success/failure rates?

    I've seen multiple posts about rewrites of applications being bad, peoples experiences about it here on Programmers, and an article I've ready by Joel Splosky on the subject, but no hard evidence of case studies. Other than the two examples Joel gave and some other posts here, what do you do with a bad codebase and how do you decide what to do with it based on real studies? For the case in point, there are two clients I know of that both have old legacy code. They keep limping along with it because as one of them found out, a rewrite was a disaster, it was expensive and didn't really work to improve the code much. That customer has some very complicated business logic as the rewriters quickly found out. In both cases, these are mission critical applications that brings in a lot of revenue for the company. The one that attempted the rewrite felt that they would hit a brick wall at some point if the legacy software didn't get upgraded at some point in the future. To me, that kind of risk warrants research and analysis to ensure a successful path. My question is have there been actual case studies that have investigated this? I wouldn't want to attempt a major rewrite without knowing some best practices, pitfalls, and successes based on actual studies. Aftermath: okay, I was wrong, I did find one article: Rewrite or Reuse. They did a study on a Cobol app that was converted to Java.

    I recently installed Ubuntu through Wubi and I love it enough I am ready to ditch windows! My set up is like this. Drive 1: 80 gig ssd Win7 Drive 2: 320 gig hdd Ubuntu (installed through wubi) Drive 3: 1000 TB NTFS media drive What I want to do is move the Ubuntu install from the 320 gig hard drive to my ssd and totally get rid of Windows. Would be great if I could preserve my current Ubuntu install during the process since its finally working :-) Thanks! Nathan

  • Forgot to unmount/eject external hard drive, lost moved files. Mac OS X

    So I was using my Mac with my external hard drive connected via USB. I moved about 10 GB of data to it (via drag and drop while holding down the Command key to move the files rather than to copy them). They moved to the drive all right, but as I was having some issues and the Finder crashed after the transfer, I was unable to eject the volume and later everything froze so I had to do a hard restart (hold the power button). When I remounted the volume (plugged the external hard drive back in) it no longer had any of the files which I moved onto it. As it was a lot of data, how can I recover these files?

  • Install Chromium OS to SECOND internal drive on EEE 901?

    I am trying to install the Chromium OS on an EEE PC 901, and I have succeeded in using Image Writer for Windows 0.2r23 to copy the IMG file to an SDHC card. Since the OS speed is limited by slow card access, I'd like to install the Chromium OS on the second, unused, internal SSD Drive, D:. However, Image Writer doesn't allow me to restore an internal drive from an IMG file. To be clear: I boot in XP on C: then run Image Writer to install the Chromium OS. Does anyone know how I can either convince Image Writer that D: is a removable drive or know of alternative program that will let me restore D: from an IMG file (non-windows file system)?

  • Recovering files that do not appear in the Recycle Bin, but are in the $Recycle.bin folder on external drive

    Problem: I have an NTFS external drive with a $Recycle.bin folder on the root (E:/$Recycle.bin/) that has about 70gb worth of data. For whatever reason, the folder is no longer a hidden system file and no Windows machine I have used the drive on will show the files in the actual Recycle Bin. What I Want To Do: I want to atleast view the recycle bin files from this external, and all of the help articles I have read just talk about deleting the folder all together. I plan on reformating the drive, but first I need to see if there are any important deleted files. What Didn't Work: Recuva - didn't see any of my files Resetting the external's Recycle Bin via command prompt and moving the old $Recycle.bin files into the new external $Recycle.bin folder (I didn't read this anywhere, just made it up on my own)

    I got some new hard discs and would like to set my PC up in the following way: Ubuntu is currently installed on one drive I want to put Windows on a second drive I would like a third drive for shared content (music and stuff) that both OSes can access What I need to know is what format should the content drive be? How should I configure the drive order in my bios for GRUB to be boot manager and how to configure GRUB for multi-HDD booting?
