  • [Java] Nested methods vs "piped" methods, which is better?

    Hi: Since uni, I've programming in Java for 3 years, although I am not fully dedicated to this language, I have spent quite some time in it, nevertheless. I understand both ways, just curious which style do you prefer. public class Test{ public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println(getAgent().getAgentName()); } private static Agent getAgent() { return new Agent(); }} class Agent{ private String getAgentName() { return "John Smith"; }} I am pretty happy with nested method calls such like the following public class Test{ public static void main(String[] args) { getAgentName(getAgent()); } private static void getAgentName(Agent agent) { System.out.println(agent.getName()); } private static Agent getAgent() { return new Agent(); }} class Agent { public String getName(){ return "John Smith"; }} They have identical output I saw "John Smith" twice. I wonder, if one way of doing this has better performance or other advantages over the other. Personally I prefer the latter, since for nested methods I can certainly tell which starts first, and which is after. The above code is but a sample, The code that I am working with now is much more complicated, a bit like a maze... So switching between the two styles often blows my head in no time.

    Somebody asked me Is n++ faster than n=n+1? My answer:-- ++ is a unary operator in C which(n++) takes only one machine instruction to execute while n=n+1 takes more than one machine instructions to execute. Anyone correct me if I am wrong, but in Assembler it take something like this: n++: inc n n = n + 1; mov ax n add ax 1 mov n ax its not exactli this, but it's near it.but in most cases a good compiler will change n = n + 1 to ++n.So A good compiler will generate same code for both and hence the same time to execute.

  • Should I distinguish OpenIDs based on protocol prefix or not? http vs https

    I have implemented a straightforward OpenID support for my ASP.NET app with DotNetOpenAuth. Yet I recently realized that the implementation was treating http://johndoe.example.com/ as a distinct user compared to https://johndoe.example.com. This lead to quite a few confused users. I am unsure what to do at this point. Is this a bug or a feature? Indeed, I can consider this behavior as a feature: if the user specifies the HTTPS, the user might not want the system to accept HTTP auth in the first place. On the other hand: if the user specifies HTTPS out of sheer cluelessness (the casual web visitor is clueless concerning the purpose of the "S" part), then rejecting it's authentication attempt is confusing. What is considered as the best practice?

    I'm doing: select * from mytable y where y.year = (select max(yi.year) from mytable yi where yi.person = y.person) Is that better or worse from a performance aspect than: select y.* from mytable y left outer join mytable y2 on y.year < y2.year and y.person = y2.person where y2.year is null The explain plan/anecdotal evidence is inconclusive so I am wondering if in general one is better than the other.

  • WCF Project vs. A folder in the existing website project?

    What way makes the most sense? I have a ASP.NET app... and maybe a Silverlight app in the future.. I want both to talk to web services.. At first, I like have the WCF project be by it self for the seperation.. But then I thought.. What is the point since I can just as easily have a 'WEBSERVICES' folder that contains all the .svc files and code in the EXISTING website project. ... Atleast that way.. deploying to a remote host will be a little easier since everything is in one project.. any other considerations ?

  • Unicode special characters - Dingbats - Appear differently in Firefox vs. Chrome/IE

    Hi there, I'm trying to find a way to make dingbats appear exactly the same in Firefox, Chrome, Safari and IE. I noticed that the Dingbats appear the same in IE/Chrome/Safari, HOWEVER - in Firefox - they look "thiner". For example - try to visit the following page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dingbat You'll notice that when viewing that page in Firefox - the characters look different in comparison to Chrome/IE. Does anybody know why and how can I cause Firefox to display the characters EXACTLY like they appear in Chrome/IE? Thx, Oren.

  • VS 2008 hangs(slow) when I select "File > Open > Web Site..."

    When I try to select the following "File Open Web Site" or use the shortcut key "Shift + Alt + O" (which does the same), Visual Studio 2008 hangs with the loading mouse icon for about 8-10 seconds then the file. But if I do "File Open Project/Solution.." or "File Open File..." the explorer window comes up in under a second, instantly most times. Computer Specs: Windows 7 x64 Visual Studio 2008 Pro Edition with Service Pack 1 Intel Core2 Due e6420 @ 3.2GHz 4GB DDR2

  • jquery ajax html response change 1.3.2 vs 1.4.2 (aka where is my script tag?)

    I've been using jquery 1.3.2 to pull snippets of html (including script) from a server. A typical response might be: <div id="content"<div id="inner"... <script type=... alert("hello world");</script <pHello World</p </div</div I've been using the query .get function: $.get($(this).attr("href"), function(response) { $("#inner").replaceWith($("#inner", response)); }); And everything is fine and works as expected: the returned html snippets get loaded into the DOM and the scripts run. When I use 1.4.2 however, I notice that the script tags have been removed and no longer run. Stepping into the newer jquery codebase yields the lines of code (line 4498) : ret.splice.apply( ret, [i + 1, 0].concat(jQuery.makeArray(ret[i].getElementsByTagName("script"))) ); which seems to be the culprit 'removing' the script from its happy resting place as part of the selector process. But it doesn't help me in injecting exactly what i want into the DOM. Any idea why jquery is doing this? More importantly, how can I go about fixing this so that my scripts run?

    Lets say we have 3 tables, Users, Products, Purchases. There is a view that needs to display the purchases made by a user. I could lookup the data required by doing: from p in DBSet<Purchases>.Include("User").Include("Product") select p; However, I am concern that this may have a performance impact because it will retrieve the full objects.   • C++ Static array vs. Dynamic array?

    What is the difference between a static array and a dynamic array in C++? I have to do an assignment for my class and it says not to use static arrays, only dynamic arrays. I've looked in the book and online, but I don't seem to understand. I thought static was created at compile time and dynamic at runtime, but I might be mistaken this with memory allocation. Can you explain to me the difference between static array and dynamic array in C++? Thnaks.

  • dark VS2008, Windows 7 theme, configuration

    So there's plenty of vs.settings files for nice dark syntax highlighting in VS2008, but I find them basically unusable since they're surrounded by an otherwise white visual studio application and general windows environment. I'd like an adequate dark windows 7 theme I can use while coding in VS. All of the 3rd party Win7 themes (that utilize the patched system files) I've come across have had fairly major problems and were unusable for one reason or another. Does anyone out there have a dark theme + VS combination they're actually happy with?

  • java vs python. In what way is Java Better?

    What are the advantages of Java over Python? What are the disadvantagesof Python, over Java? Why isn't Java more like Python? Like why don't java have an command line iterpretor? I beleive Java must have some advantages, but...I'm yet to see them. Logically all languages have an advantage afaict: I learnt java before python, - a 6 month unicourse. I spend a couple of weeks using python (writting a script to make a C source file). I hated it at first (as it was so differnt from C). I realised I had fallen in love it it, when I noticed that when I went to do a follow on Java Course at uni, I'ld stopped giving my variables types, and was tryign to multiply strings.

    Hi All, I'm a .NET developer with 10 years experience developing Web & Mobile Apps. I'm looking to branch into iPhone (and possibly Android) development. I'm looking at two products: Appcelerator Titanium (http://www.appcelerator.com/) and MonoTouch (http://monotouch.net/) I like MonoTouch because of it's standing in the Mono development communitity and it's C#. In saying that Appcelerator looks very straight forward using HTML and Javascript and targets Android too (which is overtaking the iPhone). The apps I'm looking to develop are line of business applications with data entry, syncing with back office, etc. Can anyone give their opinion on the pro's / con's of using these tools or any experiences.     Hey, I am trying to calculate a SHA-1 Hash from a string, but when I calculate the string using php's sha1 function I get something different than when I try it in C#.   • How much is the database being read from vs written to?

    I'd like to determine if my web app is read-heavy, write-heavy, or somewhere in between. I could take a guess, but I want proof. Is there a query I could run in Sql Server 2005 that would tell me the overall read/write ratio? Are there any caveats I should be aware of? Perhaps it can be found in a DMV query, or the Performance Dashboard, or examining a Sql Profiler trace. I'm not sure exactly how.

    Something doesn't seem right about the source code for Flash Remoting's Date(AS3) <- DateTime(.NET) stream reader/writer methods, when it comes to handling UTC <- Local times. It seems to write the DateTime data fine, including a 64-bit representation as milliseconds elapsed since Jan 1, 1970, as well as a UTC offset. public void WriteDateTime(DateTime d) { this.BaseStream.WriteByte(11); DateTime time = new DateTime(0x7b2, 1, 1); long totalMilliseconds = (long)d.Subtract(time).TotalMilliseconds; long l = BitConverter.DoubleToInt64Bits((double)totalMilliseconds); this.WriteLong(l); int hours = TimeZone.CurrentTimeZone.GetUtcOffset(DateTime.Today).Hours; this.WriteShort(hours); } But when the data is read... it seems to be ignoring the short UTC offset value that was written, and appears to just discard it! private DateTime ReadDateValue() { long num2 = (long)this.ReadDouble(); DateTime time2 = new DateTime(0x7b2, 1, 1).AddMilliseconds((double)num2); int num3 = this.ReadInt16() / 60; //num3 is not used for anything! return time2; } Can anyone make sense of this?   • devArt's dotConnect for Oracle vs. ODP.net/OCI performanc.

    Does anybody have any experience going from ODP.net to devArt's dotConnect for Oracle? Some initial testing is showing Direct Connect in 64bit dotConnect running 30% slower at times than our original ODP.net/OCI 32 bit solution. Trying to determine if that's normal or if something may be wrong in my testing approach. Thanks!
