  • Can I remove "Free space" text from the Nautilus status bar?

    I want to remove the part in Nautilus that shows free disk space. In theory it may useful but it's so badly designed, every time I select some files my eye gets drawn to "15 GB" instead of the actual size of the files. And with no files selected, it says something like "24 items, Free space 15GB" which at a quick glance looks like the total size of the files. I've looked through the preferences and don't see anything. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 with Nautilus 2.32.0.

    On my work network any apt-get (or aptitude) commands take a very long time, it's look's like admins blocked some port for it (for unknown reason).   • How do I choose which way to enable/disable, start/stop, or check the status of a service?

    If I want to start a system installed service, I can do: # /etc/init.d/some-svc start # initctl start some-svc # service some-svc start # start some-svc If I want to disable a service from running at boot, I can do: # rm /etc/rc2.d/S99some-svc # update-rc.d some-svc disable # mv /etc/init/some-svc.conf /etc/init/some-svc.conf.disabled Then there are similarly various things I can do to enable services for starting at boot, and so on. I'm aware of the fact that upstart is a (relatively) new thing, and I know about how SysV init used to work, and I'm vaguely aware of a bunch of D-Bus nonsense, but what I don't know is how one is actually intended to interface with this stuff. For example, I don't know how to easily determine whether a service is an Upstart job or a legacy SysV thing, without actually reading through the source of its shell scripts extensively. So: if I want to start or stop a service, either at the moment or persistently, which of these tools should I use, and why? If the answer depends on some attribute (like "this service supports upstart") then how do I quickly and easily learn about that attribute of an installed package? Relatedly, are there any user interface tools which can safely and correctly interact with the modern service infrastructure (upstart, and/or whatever its sysv compatibility is)? For example, could I reliably use sysv-rc-conf to determine which services should start?

  • What is (are) the most useful technique/visualization for overall project status?

    For reasons "above my pay grade", we're developing an issue/project tracking system where I work (similar to Trac, FogBugz, etc). The managers want a useful tool to be able to track the overall health of the project (e.g. How much time left, how are we performing vs estimates) and one of the features that has been requested is some type of critical path support and visualization. The logic explained to me is that they want to be sure that at least the most important pieces of the project are currently being worked on. The initial idea was that we would create task-based dependencies. My understanding of project management tells me that this kind of granular approach is unnecessary - having milestones with specific deadlines/dependencies is much more useful. I would like to know what are the most useful techniques and "pretty pictures" you've seen/used for project development. Having objective data would be best, but somewhat subjective data is helpful too.

I notice that a lot of books, even some of the better ones, covert it toward and end of the book and some books just add it as an appendix. I would teach it together with variables. This is so foundational and I think unfortunately many do not make it that far in a book.   • What is the current legal status of magnet links?

    Prelude: I develop a cloud service which could be described as dropbox meets torrents and as side effect it enables distribution of arbitrary content via magnet links. Certain amount of magnet links will be displayed on the main website (I will be able to remove them one-by-one or ban users but no more). I will not be able to avoid magnets without complete rework of overall project architecture and either way it will hurt overall performance badly, probably making service meaningless. So my question is, what should I do, to avoid legal problems if my site in a nutshell is just a collection of magnet links? Privacy achieved via end-user encryption, so there is almost no access restrictions on the website. And anyway will help me any? Will hosting in particular country help me?

    This following question by Jeff was in 2010 and I wanted to check how things have changed in the past 2 years. My problem: I run a site with most of the content distributed to subdomains that’s are user based. E.g: Joe.example.com John.example.com Jil.example.com So all of these subdomains have the content and the main site example.com becomes a mere dummy listing all the subdomains. Now the question is, as of 2012, how is google treating domain authority and page rank in this case? I understand the notion of page rank as page per se but when it comes to domain authority will the parent domain have the cumulative effect of the domain authority or will it be spread out?

    I'm not sure of any of the terminology, so I'll have to explain things simply, to make sure you understand what I'm saying. I'm using Gnome 3, and when I bring the mouse to the bottom right of the screen, a bar pops up, with icons of some things that are running in the background (at the moment, mine has "Update Manager", "Removable Devices", "caffeine-cup"). Is there any way to move these items to the bar at the top of the screen, alongside the icons for volume, network connectivity and universal access (how do I get rid of that btw)? Thanks

  • How to track inbound HTTP traffic using Plesk 10.4.4?

    I am running Plesk 10.4.4 on a Debian 6.0 server. The outbound traffic is being tracked but the inbound http traffic seems to be 0 at all times, i.e. looking at the DomainsTraffic and ClientsTraffic the http_in column is always 0. Is this a setting that I have missed? I've had a look and cannot find anything. How do I get Plesk to track the inbound HTTP traffic? I have already made sure that Home Tools & Settings Server settings had 'Include in the traffic calculation' set to 'inbound and outbound traffic', yet this does not solve the problem. Apache allows inbound traffic to be logged using %I in the log format, is there a way to get Plesk to add the %I to the log and then use that in bandwidth calculations?

  • download and process a file by ftp at set intervals, with error handling, rescheduling and status messages

    I want to download a data file from a remote ftp server to my machine at regular intervals. Once the file is downloaded I want to call another script which will process the file. My development machine is mac os x, the eventual deployment environment is linux. What's would be the stock standard way to automate this? I know I can use cron to schedule curl to download and to run a script that will process the downloaded file at regular intervals, and I know could write a slightly more complex script or an application that would do this and add error handling, rescheduling and sending status emails. But one of my requirements for this project is to write as little custom code as possible, instead I should try to use standard, tried and true existing tools, and if I do have to write code, to try and write the most straightforward code possible. The reason for this is the code will potentially be installed on a large number of machines, all of which will need to be tweaked, customised and maintained by different people, long after I am gone from the project, so the intention is to use well documented, well supported tools as much as possible. This seems such a common task, there must be tools and scripts all over the internet, written by people who have carefully considered everything that could possibly go wrong when you need to download and process a file from a remote server at regular intervals, with error handling, rescheduling and sending status messages. Is that what Expect is for? What would you recommend? (the system will be downloading weather prediction data every six hours, so that the system can prepare in the event of bad weather warnings)

  • Acer aspire 5735z wireless not working after upgrade to 11.10

    I cant get my wifi card to work at all after upgrading to 11.10 Oneiric. I'm not sure where to start to fix this. Ive tried using the additional drivers tool but this shows that no additional drivers are needed. Before my upgrade I had a drivers working for the Rt2860 chipset. I have a feeling I'm simply missing something vital in my WSDL as I've seen countless examples of 'Consuming PHP SOAP WebServices with .Net' which appear to suggest that it 'just works'.     I spend a few hours trying to get Twitter integration to work with Spring Social using the XML configuration approach. All the examples I could find on the web (and on stackoverflow) always use the @Config approach as shown in the samples For whatever reason the bean definition to get an instance to the twitter API throws an AOP exception: Caused by: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Cannot create scoped proxy for bean 'scopedTarget.twitter': Target type could not be determined at the time of proxy creation.     Hi, I am writing a Jython script to sort a list of URLs. I have a list that looks like this: http://www.domain.com/folder1/folder2/|,1 http://www.domain.com/folder1/|,1 http://www.domain.com/folder1/folder2/folder3/|,1 http://www.domain.com/folder1/|,1 http://www.domain.com/folder1/folder2/|,1 http://www.domain.com/folder1/folder2/|,1 http://www.domain.com/folder1/folder2/folder3/|,1 The pipe and the comma separates the path from the amount of files that are under that path.
